Sharing 1 library with 2 iPods  on 4 PCs and a NAS drive - possible?

Anyone managed to do anything similar to my setup as per subject line?
I've only just got an iPod so please tell me if I'm looking at this the wrong way but...
The idea is that all my music (CD ripped mp3s) is stored on a NAS drive on my home network. I create a library for my iPod on the NAS drive so any new CDs I rip on my PC also go straight onto the NAS drive. My GF connects her iPod to her PC which picks up the same library off the NAS, similarly when she rips CDs it'll update the same library. When I use my laptop or media centre PC they'll also pick up the same library off the same NAS drive.
Is this all too simple? Am I missing something? i.e. only one iPod per library allowed, or only one PC per library allowed? What would happen if both me and my GF connected to the library at the same time?
A lot of questions, I know, many many many thanks for anyone that that can answer some of them.
cheers

Sounds mighty tricky, but possible. Exactly the kind of thing I would waste days working on!
Is the music all stored on the NAS drive?
I would try and have a single library. You could create two playlists to handle the iPods and stream music to the other PCs. This way any music additions etc. would only have to be done once. In this case I would keep the library with the music on the NAS drive.
Alternatively, you would have a separate library on each PC accessing the music on the NAS drive right? In this case any music additions / deletions on the NAS drive would have to be reflected in all libraries. I've written a perl script that looks for music in the iTunes music directory that's not currently in iTunes -- could be adapted into an applescript that automatically adds the songs to a new playlist. Problem is, you're on windows...

replacing iTunes library with iPod library?
Can anyone tell me how I can replace my entire iTunes music library with my iPod music?

The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7, look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    iPod.iTunes Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    iPodAccess Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    PodUtil Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
If your library is currently empty and your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. For the duration of the transfer change your update setting to manual so you can use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it: iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX
Whichever of these transfer methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

Yes, this info got burried.  Basically, it's a tool for building LabVIEW-based software products.  It is highly flexible/extensible and tries to fill the holes left by LabVIEW's built-in Application Builder.  Here are some good links to more info:

  • I want to create a second library with the same account on a separate hard drive....

    Hi,
I am running out of room on my iMac to store all of my iTunes music and video. I want to create a second library with the same account on a separate hard drive. Will iTunes Match match both libraries ? Will I be able to acess both libraries from all my devices? Can iTunes Match merge them together so I can have easy access to everything?
    Thanks for any advice.

Unfortunately, you can't.  The primary address for your iCloud account must be a non-Apple email account.  The only exception to this is for former MobileMe subscribers who migrated to iCloud when MobileMe closed, which was 18 months ago.

  • TRYING TO SYNC A SHARED LIBRARY WITH LOCAL ITUNES LIBRARY - PLEASE HELP

Hi. I am so desperate. I have not been able to update my iPod for 6 months and am about to go OS and would love to download all my recent music.
The prob is that all our music is in a Shared iTunes library (called iTunes server, on my husband's computer. We are networked). There is not much in my local iTunes library. I am trying to drag all the music from the Shared iTunes library into my local iTunes library but am having no luck.
Does anyone know how I can make my local iTunes library reflect what's in our shared library? Once I work that out then we can do the same and update my husband's local iTunes library, which is where I update my iPod from (since mine is a work computer and has no USB access). Thanks alot if you can help... DESPERATE

When iTunes Match is is on, you don't sync music or playlists with your computer.

  • Shared Library--One iPod--two XP users.... massive duplications!

Our iTunes is filling up with duplicate entries! My wife and I recently bought a new XP computer and uploaded our music collection to iTunes so that we could use the iPod w/dock as our main music source. I tried to set it up so that everything went to the "Shared Music" folder. I now find that our new iPod has formed a primary bond with my wife's library and not the shared library. Is there a way to change this? I'm hitting a lot of trouble with duplications--and I suspect it may have something to do with this.... Help!

Actually, I just figured out the answer to my own question. Apparently this is not possible with the shuffle. I don't know how to cross-post on these boards, but if anyone else is interested the relevant thread can be found by searching for:
iPod shuffle is linked to another itunes library

  • ITunes Shared library with all users on one computer

I am trying to share my iTunes (version 8.2) library with all the users on my computer. So far, this is what I have done:
    1) I have moved the music folder into the shared folder.
    2) I have selected "Add to Library" in all three accounts.
    3) I have tried checking and unchecking the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library."
Since then, I have added some CDs that had some songs that I already had. When I loaded these CDs, I deleted the duplicates that had the worse sound. Since then, everything is unwinding. The additions on one user account are not being added to the others. When I delete a track, iTunes (obviously) says that it can't find the song anymore. What's odd is that I then delete the one that is missing, and both are missing now: the one that I deleted on the original account and the one that I did not delete on the original account.
I am starting to think that I need to start from scratch. So, to make a long story short (too late), how can I share my iTunes library with all users on one computer, where I can make a change in one account that will update automatically on the other accounts. If it can't be updated automatically, how can I add/delete files without causing the headaches I am currently having?
    Brian

I actually followed this, but I still had problems that I listed above. Is there any way that when you make changes to one account (even if there is only one main account where changes are made), the changes are automatically (or at least easily) applied to the other user accounts?

  • Sharing internet with iPod touch

Now, what I have is a MacBook with OS 10.5.4 installed and my Internet connection is through cable modem and it's a Ethernet Connection and I want to share my Internet through Airport with my iPod Touch.
I have followed the instruction about "Sharing your Internet connection", but it is still not work.
In my iPod touch, I can see the IP Address 168.254.13.167 and the Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0 only. The Router and DNS is blank. Also when I open the safari with iPod touch, the error message " Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server" is shown. Why is that? Please help me and sorry for my english.

Try unplugging the cable modem, wait, and then plugging it in again.
-----> I tried, but it's still not work
Is this your system: cable modem -> Airport (expess? extreme?) ---- Macbook / iPod Touch?
------> For my system, cable modem -> Macbook (Airport extreme)
Is there another router in the picture? The 168.254.13.167 IP address doesn't look like an Apple IP. It should look like 10.XX.XX.XX.
-------> what do you mean of "in the picture"
Also the System Preferences>Network>AirPort, in the Status field, is said "the AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet. "

  • Shared Library with Home Sharing off??

I am using itunes with 2 different macs (most recent mac pro and most recent MBP). My MBP has the library I am sharing, which I use to play it on my Mac Pro.
So when I have home sharing on, I see the little house icon, with my library from my laptop in the shared area of the sidebar. But then there is the library again with a different icon that is there even if home sharing is off.
Here is what it looks like: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1885149/Screen%20shot%202010-09-07%20at%205.08.44%20PM.p ng
What is the icon and why can I access the library with homesharing off?
    Thanks!

you should be able to see the contents of the other library but you shouldn't be able to transfer content.

The short of it all is that iTunes and/or Mac OS X Mavericks has broken some functionality in IPv6 or how iTunes home sharing is using it (I am leaning towards the latter as the iTunes team has a very bad habit of releasing bugs in the past).
Disabling IPv6 will also fix this issue with iTunes 11.1.2+ on Windows.

  • How to have a shared library with 2 networked macs?

Like many people I have a laptop (leopard) and a desktop (tiger) in my home, and I'd like to have a shared iPhoto library so I can download/access/edit the pictures to be available on both macs. For the laptop this would have to be set up wirelessly, and I'm thinking a large external drive is the best solution (I'd like to do the same with my iTunes library too, but I guess that's a different discussion). I'm about to install iPhoto 09 on both machines, so can anyone give me instructions on how to do this? Thank you.

    Mike
The key factor here is the version of iLife - they need to be the same on both machines. However iPhoto 09 requires 10.5.6 minimum, so you’ll need to upgrade the OS on the 10.4 machine.
What do you mean by ‘Share’?
If you want the other machine to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and enable 'Look For Shared Libraries' on the other Machine. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
You can drag pics from the Shared Library to the machine’s own Library in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both machines for this to work.
If you want both machiens to have the same access to the library: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto on both machines
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
Note This disk should be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Storing libraries on disks formatted any other way can lead to issues with importing, sharing and editing.
On each machine in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both machines will have full access to the library, in fact, both machines will 'own' it.
*Note 2* there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
*Note 3* A wireless connection is perfectly adequate for viewing photos in a Library. However, it is not suited for editing or organising photos in an iPhoto Library. Drop outs are part and parcel of wireless networking. Should one occur while the app is writing to the DB then the database will be corrupted.

  • Unable to home share with iPod Touch (4th Gen) and iPad 2

Since I have upgraded to iTunes 11 I am unable to home share my HD movies to both my iPod Touch (4th Gen) and my iPad 2
I was able to home share all my HD movies before iTunes 11.
I know that the iPad 2 and 4th Gen iPod Touch can only support 720p, but by streaming/home sharing that was the work around.
But again, once I upgraded to iTunes 11... when I go on my iPad or iPod Touch I can no longer see them in my shared library.
Here is the crazy part though... if I go downstairs and get on my 2nd gen AppleTV... I can see all my movies in my shared library.
DO YOU THINK IT IS iOS 6.0.1 ????

There are no setting on the iPod. Unlike the iPad wich morrors the iPad display, TV out on an iPod only displays TV out on apps that support TV out. The Video app is one such app.
    Is that you problem?
    Otherwise:
    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

  • Missing header files when importing a shared library with labview 8.6?

    Hi all,
I want to import a .dll into my .vi program but I am not able to do it...
I have created the dll  following the ni website tutorial
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3303#toc2
Once the dll has been created, I have tried to import it with
    Tools-Import-Shared Library(dll)
After parsing the header file appears an error like this one:
void __cdecl Zdmt(LVBoolean *stop, double P, char channelName[],
TD1 *errorIn, TD14 *FFTOptions, TD12 *Calibration, char FileName[],
int32_t minRecordLength, TD26 *InstrumentHandler, LVRefNum sessionRefArray[],
LVRefNum *queueIN, TD1 *errorOut, LVBoolean *averagingDone,
HWAVES LastRecordFetched, TD24 *Impedance, TD17 *ColeColeCluster,
TD18 *FFTcluster, TD5 *InstrumentHandleOutputCluster, LVRefNum *queueOut,
int32_t *Acquired, TD6 *FreqTimeInfoCluster, double *averagesCompleted,
        int32_t len);
The following symbols are not defined:
    LVBoolean; int32_t; LVRefNum;
Undefined symbols can prevent the wizard from recognizing functions and parameters. To correct this problem, check the header file to determine if you must add predefined symbols. Click the Back button to return to the previous page of the wizard to add a preprocessor definitionsl (for example, "NIAPI_stdcall = __stdcall" or "NIAPIDefined = 1").
The following header file was not found in the specified header file or one of the referenced header files:
    -  extcode.h
To fix, click the Back button to go to the previous page and add the header file path to the Include Paths list.
I have replaced the first line #include "extcode.h" of the dll header file for #include "C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.6\cintools\extcode.h" that is the full path where the header file is located. However, new libraries seems to be missed:
    -  stdint.h
    -  MacTypes.h
Does anybody know what I have to do??
Any help will be really appreciated,
    Regards,
    Benjamin

If you use any of the LabVIEW cintools headers, they reference other headers too. The import wizard is written in a way that it simply skips parsing datatypes that can not be resolved due to missing header files.  If your functions you want to import references such datatypes then you get an according error about any include files the wizard could not load, otherwise not. The wizard can not know which of the missing header files is the problem since it obviously doesn't know what would be in those header files.
The LabVIEW cintools headers are multiplatform, meaning they evaluate various compiler predefined defines to determine which platform they are included in. The import library wizard does not define any specific defines, since it is not really a compiler. So you have to define them. And they get adapted with each new LabVIEW version to support new compilers and compiler versions, so the defines described in the link in the first post do not have to be correct for cintools headers in newer LabVIEW versions.
All in all writing DLLs that interface to LabVIEW cintools headers should not be done by writing them and then importing them using the wizard but instead you should write the VI and create the Call Library Node, then let LabVIEW create a template C file from the context menu of the Call Library Node and copy that into your C sources and fill in the functions from there.

  • ITunes Library not seen - Sharing Library with another account on same Mac

I have a done a search and tried some of the suggestions, but it doesn't appear to be working.
    Background:
Had iTunes on a Windows machine.
    Purchased about 60 tunes
Ripped all my CDs into the library
    Bought an iBook
Purchased about 30 tunes on the iBook
Used the Network to copy the Music files to the iBook
    iBook appears to have everything
Bought at 17" iMac - did a Target Disk transfer from iBook
Reformatted 17" and traded it in for 20" iMac
Did a Target Disk transfer from iBook to new 20"
Under my account on the iMac, I can see/use my entire library. Per suggestions here, I moved the iTunes Music folder to my Public diretory so that my wife could see the library too. When I loaded iTunes on my wife's account and did an Add to Library the only thing that shows up in her library is the 30 tunes I purchased using the iBook.
I have both accounts setup to point to the Public directory.
How do I make this work??
Also, I really only want one library to be shared between both of our accounts on both machines, but I do want the ability to take the library with me when I go mobile with the iBook. Is this possible?

I read the referenced thread and although the person got the desired results, I see two problems with the method they used. It sounds like they simply mad another copy of the library on the hard drive. First, this wastes disk space as you now have to copies of every song on the hard drive. Second, whenever music is added to either of the libraries, the other library will not see it and be out of "sync" unless you manually copy the new songs to the other directory.
I am looking for a solution in which their is only one central library.
    Thanks
    Carl
