Sharing a disk on a mixed network

I'm contemplating getting an Airport Extreme N in larger part so that I can share a hard drive over my network. The network is mixed. There are two PCs, one which has a wireless card, probably 802.11g and one that's wired, two Macs that will ony support 802.11g, one Mac that is hard wired to the network and one Mac that will support 802.11n.
So, my question, which was not answered by any of the support documents I located is Will I be able to share a hard disk in this kind of set up?
I believe that my household (yeah, this is my house) now has a greater number of computers than people.

Based on your hardware descriptions, the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) should be able to accomodate all of your equipment. It's three LAN ports would be used for the wired PC & Mac (with one left over), and it's wireless, running in 802.11n (b/g-compatible mode) should handle the mix of wireless clients. The one thing to note for wireless to operate at pure 802.11n speeds, ALL wireless devices must be 802.11n.
Similiarly, both Windows & Macs can access USB-attached hard drives that are formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305038 & http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/sharing.html)

  • Sharing Contact Details across a mixed network

Ok simple question - I have a small network of 5 computers (3 windows 2 Macs) what is the best way of sharing a database of contact details (i.e. customer database) across all these machines?
I would like it to be stored in one place so that changes to the contacts are reflected on all machines.
    Any ideas?

If all Macs are connected by cable to the LAN you can do what you want. Put the library on an external HD formatted for OS X Extended (journaled) and set the Ownership to be ignored.
Setup an account on the Mac that the EHD is connected to so all can log in to that account and access the EHD. Remember, *only one person can use the library at a time and you should not access the library wirelessly* as Terrence warned against. That's a recipe for disaster.

  • Leopard, Linux and Windows mixed networks

Oh oh so funny. I installed Leopard on my mac. I have a mixed network, with PCs, Macs and Linux machines.
I discovered that Leopard networking is a nightmare, something back like Windows 95. Is not a joke!
After installing with an upgrade from 10.4.10, all the Windows machines of my network disappeared. )-: . No way to see in the finder. But ok, using the terminal I can manage to use. But...
My real problem started when I tried to reconnect the drives from the Linux machines. The new networking act like Windows, Iit doesn't allow me to choice different passwords and usernames from each drives in the same server. Ok, I say myself "for the moment, I mount one volume, I use it, then I unmount, I mount another volume etcetera". Not so useful, but manageable. And here the second nightmare begin: Finder isn't able to disconnect my disk! I use the eject button, or the "disconnect" button and the disk remain mounted. I rebooted the machine. Same, the disk is mounted. I restarted both mac and linux machine. Same, it reconnect the drive )-: . So I'm locked to one drive of my server and I can't do nothing else.
If someone with a mixed network is experimenting the same issues, please help!
    Thanks a lot!
P.S. I'm really disappointed. Before making jokes (with the PCs of the network displayed with the blue screen of death icon) they must use the time to test their system... and hey, please don't display the BSOD icon when the machines connected to the network are Linux computers (-: !!!

Read the hint is this blog about the Mac to Linux SAMBA fix.
Did you go to System Preferences->Sharing pane and turn on File sharing on (hit the 'Advanced' button to choose the kind of sharing protocols)?
Also do mix and matching from the articles File Sharing With OS X 10.5 - Introduction to File Sharing With Your Mac (for XP sharing) & File Sharing With Snow Leopard: Sharing OS X 10.6 Files With Windows 7 (for 10.6.x sharing). Mixing these two articles can help you share as long as you are in the same IP subnet.

  • Sharing isn't working across a network

I've run across a problem when I try to share my library across my network at home. I can see my wife's music library, but although she can see my libraray listed, when she tries to connect to it, it fails. I have checked in the sharing preferences and all the right boxes are ticked, but alas no luck.
I have also had the same problem with my iphone- it detects the library and then cannot connect either.
I am running itunes 7.6.2 on Mac os x 10.5.4 and my wife's mac is running 10.4.11
    Any ideas?

Very strange! I guess I didn't realize that you were working with a mixed network, though I don't think it should matter. Is the computer whose collection you are accessing a Mac or Windows machine? How about the other computers on the network? It is possible that you may need to cross-post this on the Windows iTunes board.
Anybody out there with experience with mixed networks? (mine is Mac-only)

  • Question about Mac OS X Sever on a mixed network...

We're looking to upgrade our network, specifically in security, and are considering using Mac OS X Server to run the Open Directory and Network Authentication over a mixed network of mainly Windows XP machines, a few Macs running Tiger and a couple of Ubuntu Machines and File Servers.
I was wondering if anyone here had some experience with running Mac OS X Server as the Open Directory Master on a mixed network?
There are several features of OS Server that I was wondering if they work on other client OS, specifically Windows...
    • Can I restrict Windows machines to not be able to burn from their optical drives?
    • Can I restrict Windows machines to only be able to mount external disks as read-only?
    • Can I use the printing restrictions on Windows machines?
    • Can I use the password perimeters, such as length, character content, password expire and change password on first login on Windows machines?
It would be helpful to know what real-world experience people have had with this.
    thanks in advance...

From what I was reading none of these services are planned for the new OS.
    For printer restrictions, you can.
You might want to use the Mac OS X server for managing your clients with any OS, but to setup restrictions you could use a third party utility..

  • Mixed network

    Hello
I wonder if the good and the great here would mind giving a little bit of advice.
Where is it at when it comes to NAS or shared drives on a mixed network. At home we have PCs mostly but I have just bought a new MBP which I think is fantastic.
I would like to use Time Machine to back it up and ideally do that over WiFi to a NAS or cheap server. I know that I have to use a Mac formatted drive to use Time Machine but is there any way to set this up so that PCs can use the NAS.
Alternatively is there a way to let the PCs see a folder on my MBP and back up to that and then from the MBP to a NAS.
Finally any suggestions of a suitable NAS. I want it headless and able to connect over WiFi because I want to hide it away in a loft or something to avoid being robbed.
    Thanks
    R

As I suggested there are some NAS systems compatible with AFP shares that could work for you, but not with TM. There are many excellent backup utility options that work across networks:
    Backup Software Recommendations
My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
    11. Apple Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility.

  • Print to Windows Shared Printer from Mac on wireless network

My set up is: HP Deskjet 1050 410 USB to a WIndows 7 PC. The PC has 4 users, each password protected for login and  public (not protected) folders. The Macbook is running OS X 10/6/8. I have downloaded the latest HP drivers.
I found the printer on the workgroup network and installed it as the only printer on the Macbook. When I send a job to print, I am prompted to either login as a guest or as a user with a password. Either way, I get an eror message "On Hold (Authentication required)" Under Job Info is the following message "NT_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER"
THis is an improvement over what was happening before when I could not find the printer in the list and had to manually use the IP address. Even then, I could not print, I would get a communication error.
The first time I installed the printer driver (an earlier driver and earlier release of OS X 10.6) I had no problems printing from the Macbook. It found the printer and printed without any password authentication. Nothing has changed on the PC, the printer is shared with all users on the network, but I can't seem to print.
I noticed many postings with similar issues but I did not see any resolution. Help! (Thanks!)

hey just want to say thanks to you guys... I just this week switched to Mac after 14 years of heavy PC use. Mac's been awesome except for that I couldn't print to my PC based printer... now I can... and I couldn't of done it with out this apple discussion thread about HPIJS.

  • How to create Shared RAW disk on solaris 10?

I have built two solaris machine using VMware. I am going to configuare RAC. how to create shared RAW disk for ocr, votedisk and asm?
    OS version = 5.10 32 bit
    Thanks

use openfiler ( software based SAN) if do not have shared disk storage system, this is an appliance kinda software can behave as SAN storage, it can be installed on VM as a guest machine and rest configuration remain same as storage and your RAC deployment.

  • OVM 3.1.1 shared virtual disk

    Hi All,
Is it possible to configure shared virtual disk in OVS 3.1.1 as it was in OVS 2.x ?
    Thanks in advance

Well, I haven't used MS cluster, but I'd think it should work, since the same disk is presented to each VM it is attached to and it is absolutely transparent to the guests where this disk comes from. All that the guests are seeing is the same device, where they all can operate on at the same time.

  • Sharing script among other machines over network

    Hi,
I have a script that does the following:
    1) Opens a pre-made excel workbook (BVHigh.xls)
    2) prompts the user to input data through two input prompt boxes (name and grade level for ten students) which then populates the ten sheets of the workbook
    3) Renames the tabs of the appropriate sheets
How do I enable the script to be shared among other users over the network? I've included the script and the excel workbook in a folder on our network attached storage device but when I test it from another computer, it simply opens a new workbook rather than the one specified.
Here is the beginning of the script:
    tell application "Microsoft Excel"
    try
    activate
open workbook workbook file name "BVHigh.xls"
    activate object worksheet "names"
set myrange to range "A2" of worksheet "names"
set myname to input box prompt "Please type a Student Name title "Students"
set value of myrange to myname
set name of sheet 3 to myname
set myrange to range "B2" of worksheet "names"
set myname to input box prompt "What grade level is this ¬student?" title "Grade Level?"
set value of myrange to myname
This works well on the machine on which it was created (Mac Book Pro- 10.6.2)
Surely I must be missing something! We have mostly eMacs running 10.5.8 and all are running Office 2008.
I could just provide the excel workbook on its own and have the teachers do more on their own but I'd really like to showcase the abilities of Applescript!
Any ideas/suggestions/help will be greatly appreciated!
I also would like to "save as" the workbook based on other data that is provided by the user (from a cell value) but am mainly interested in resolving the sharing protocol which I am clearly missing.
    Thanks in advance!

The most obvious problem is that you're just telling Excel to open a file without any consideration of where that file might be.
open workbook workbook file name "BVHigh.xls"
How is Excel to know where this file is? I'm actually surprised it works at all - even on your machine, but I assume that means Excel has a preset list of locations it checks.
At the very least I'd expect this line to require a path to the file you want to open:
open workbook workbook file "Macintosh HD:path:to:BVHigh.xls"
Of course, this begs another question of how to do that in a multi-system environment where you may or may not have control over the path to the file. Either you will need to standardize on the file location, or you may need to craft a more robust script - for example one that's aware of relative paths, or that prompts the user to select the file.

It does not work this way... Making long story short you need to connect to LUN, create CSV on top of it and create shared VHDX there. For details see:

  • OVS 2.2 Shared Virtual Disk

I have created a Shared Virtual Disk and created a filesystem on it via one of my VMs. I have also mounted it on another VM. Anything that VM#1 creates on the shared disk can't be seen by VM#2 and vice-versa. Is this the way the shared disk is supposed to work?

Is this the way the shared disk is supposed to work? You have to run a clustered filesystem like OCFS2 on both machines for changes to be visible on all nodes at the same time. Just having the disk shared is not enough. This is exactly the same as connecting two physical machines to the same hard drive. :)

  • Shared Virtual Disk

When creating a virtual shared disk oracle VM Manager -> Resources -> Shared Virtual Disks the only option you have are
    Virtual Disk Name:
    Virtual Disk Size:
    Server Pool name:
    Group Name:
    Description:
My question is how do you know what this virtual disk is mapped to? i.e. SAN, NFS, LOCAL DISK?
Also how do you specific what disk to use ideally I would like the virtual disk to use a 150GB LUN from my SAN?

With the exception of multipath devices (and plain files obviously), there is no user interface for other kinds of devices for back end storage for DomUs, but Xen supports them. You have to edit the config yourself. They are in /OVS/running_pool/<name>/vm.cfg
Look for the disk = line and edit it to something like this:
    disk = [
    'phy:/dev/DomUDisk2/LVOracleApp,xvda,w',
In this case, I used a local LVM logical volume as back end storage (/dev/DumUDisk2) and I mapped it to the paravirtual device in the vm (xvda). You have to do something similar. I don't have a SAN/HBAs, but assuming your LUN shows up on Dom0 as /dev/sda, you might give a try to something like:
disk = ['file:/OVS/running_pool/myvm/System.img,hda,w', # or whater you want to do for the boot/root disk
    *'phy:/dev/sda,xvda,w',* ]
Once this works, you might want to configure multipath if your hardware supports it.
Best of luck, keep us posted.

  • Shared virtual disks and linux installation

    Dear all,
when i add some shared virtual disk to the virtual machine and start the instsallation of oracle linux i face a major performance issue and the system takes a long time to boot and linux cd's and start the instsallation process, i don't know why this issue is happening to me but it is giving me alot of troubes. i had to buy a new machine with husge configuration to try oracle VM and i feel like i bought for no benifits at all
    your help will be appreciated/

    Avi,
Actually, if you have one server HA would do nothing for you. You need at least two servers for HA to be useful.
Also I would believe that since you only have one 500 gig drive I am sure it is a sata drive that you are using. That drive is running your Dom0 plus all other DomU's. The shared drive is a file on the filesystem under the /OVS directory your DomU system drive is a file on the /OVS filesystem. While your experience is still a little odd it would run but be really slow. You say that without the shared drive it runs OK so my first thought would be to drop the shared disk and recreate it since it sounds like you have nothing on it at this point in time anyway.
Could be that the file for the shared disk became corrupt with something else you had done.
