Sharing a folder on Mac Mini 10.6.4 to view on xp machine from desktop

G'day
I am currently a trainee at the AICM(Australian Institute of Country Music)
Today i have been asked to set up a link between an xp machine and the mac mini server. I have no previous experience with mac server software but the directors made it adement they wanted macs so they went and bought about 6 pc's including a mac mini server.
The current deal is that we previously had an old mac pro tower hooked up to an ethernet network which ran our printer, web proxy etc.
I have since migrated most of the settings and stuff such as web proxy over, sorted out open directory.
WHAT I NEED TO NOW IS GET AN XP MACHINE TALKING TO THE SERVER *caps for emphasis on topic*
Ill post a few screenshots below along with explanations of steps which i thought would create a shortcut or directory to a shared file on mac mini server
old server ip is :192.168.2.10
new server ip is :192.168.2.15
XP machine already had mapped network drive. However old server has been turned off and replaced so ip is no longer valid. As you can see in the pic below the option to add mserv as network drive is blanked out. However i went through a series of seperate steps to add a network place(not network drive) and mserv was indeed in workgroup list. It is inaccesible however after inputting password.

The following list of screenshots is a series of steps i took to add a network drive workaround. They should be in order

If anybody can eleborate or give me an easy fix solution to what im trying to do that would be great

If you can see the workgroup but after selecting it the PC name does not appear then this is odd. One suggestion could be that the PC is using a different workgroup name to workgroup - such as MSHome. You could check this on the PC by right-clicking the Computer icon and selecting Properties.
Whatever name the PC is using for the workgroup you can set the Mac to use the same. If you open System Preferences > Network and select the interface that you are using on the Mac (Ethernet or Airport) you can then select the Advanced tab and then open the WINS tab. In the Workgroup drop menu you can then select the workgroup name that the Mac can use.
If changing the workgroup name to be the same as the PC still doesn't help (note that it can take 15 minutes for the master browser to pass information throughout the local network) then there is a manual method you can use that bypasses the browsing function.
With the Print & Fax > Add Printer window open, if you control-click the toolbar you can select to 'Customize Toolbar'. You will then see the Advanced icon which you can drag into the toolbar (next to the Windows icon will be fine). If you now select the Advanced icon you can then change the Type drop menu to Windows. Then in the URL field, after smb://, you can enter the IP address or name of the PC followed by a / and then the shared name for the printer. For example,
smb://windows-xp/mp980
You can then enter a name for the printer and in the Print Using menu you can select the appropriate driver. This is another important point as many of the vendor supplied drivers do not support this type of network connection. Instead you may need to use the Gutenprint driver suite that is included with 10.6.
Hope this helps you. If you get stuck then describe where you are up to and we'll get back to you with more help.

  • Can I display EyeTV's live TV over HDMI-out and be able to see my desktop using screen-sharing on a headless mac-mini used as a media-box?

    Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a new mac-mini to replace my current one which acts as an iTunes server and records TV programs using eyeTV. I connect using screen-sharing/VNC to be able to do stuff on it (like handbrake etc.)
I have eyeTV with a satelite receiver and I want to change the setup so that:
    - the new mac-mini continues to work as an iTunes server (and handbrake workhorse)
    - I can use the HDMI output (inc. audio) to show eyeTV's live TV full-screen app
    - I can connect using screen-sharing/VNC to the mac-mini and see my normal desktop to be able to maintain it etc. but this is a headless display (no screen is connected to the display-port).
    - recorded media I'd play through the appleTV2 still + rentals etc. unless anyone knows if eyeTV software can offer up iTunes content? I don't like the eyeTV recordings in general as it seems very slow to me for access when there are lots of recordings and wouldn't be available in other apleTVs in the house AFAIK.
The main benefit that this gives me is that I'd no longer need a seperate satelite box to watch live TV and can add more eyeTV hardware to get additional TV channels all through the same HUD on the TV for ease of access.
Does this seem possible in theory & practice (ie are there any gotcha's to consider?)
    - can I force the HDMI output resolution to 1080i as I go via an amp to the TV and the appleTV2 drops to low-res in this configuration so I have had to find a workaround for that.
    - does the mac-mini have IR input that can be programmed?
    - Does eyeTV software remain stable for long periods?
    - Does the HDMI out have any handshake issues that would need a reset of the display (somehow)?
thanks in advance for any thoughts/contributions
    Lee

I think the easiest way to do this is to have the EyeTV app running in one user account and sent via HDMI to the TV, and use a separate user account for Screen Sharing. Both logins can be active at the same time and with Lion you can connect via screen sharing to which ever login you need.
With regards to the Mac video resolution changing, when it is not the current input on your AV receiver. This is 'normal', if the Mac sees no signal it drops down the a lower level. What you need is to buy a HDMI Detective Plus which tricks the Mac in to always seeing a signal and hence it will not drop down the resolution. See http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=8005
The Mac mini does have an IR receiver. This can be used with the EyeTV app, iTunes, and similar. Yes I believe EyeTV would run for prolonged periods quite happily, it is has been around for a long time and had most of the rough edges polished off. However one issue you will have to deal with is that it does not automatically update its program guide data. For this you might have to write or modify an AppleScript. Elgato support or their user forums will be a lot of help.
You can set EyeTV to convert recordings to an iTunes (Apple TV) compatible format and then delete them from EyeTV.
The HDMI Detective should solve your handshaking problems.

I would opt for one 8 GB stick so you would have 10 GB. total. This says really no practical advantage in dual channel memory

  • How do I share a folder on mac mini with other macs in the network?

    Howdy all!
The scenario I have in mind is that I have one folder in our Mac Mini (used as Home Theater) with all the family's music files on it. The rest of the family would be able to access the folder and copy the music they prefer onto their own computers (iMacs and Macbooks). The other computers would have read only access, they would not be able to alter the contents of the original file (to prevent accidental deletion). Only the user of the Mini Home Theater could alter the contents of said file.
I have tried pulling up the "Get Info" window and clicking the "Shared Folder" and "Locked" boxes, but all this seems to do is make the user of the Mac Mini unable to alter the contents of the folder. All the other macs on the network can access and alter the folder contents no problem.
    What am I missing?
Thank you for any advice you can give!

This isn't quite what I was looking for. I don't want to share the folder with users on the same computer--I want to share the folder with users on other computers.
Unless there is some way to identify users on other computers. How can I do that?

  • Can't access iTunes and Screen Sharing sharing services on my mac Mini

Since several weeks now I face a networking issue of the stranger kind.
Currently I've got my Mac mini acting as the central server for music, photos and files in my home. Central Network Mgmt device is a Wireless Lan router.
In the past I was accessing the Mac Mini from my MacBook via Screen Sharing this doesn't work anymore. When requesting the service the connection effort just runs idle. In iTunes on my MacBook I can see the Libary of my Mac Mini iTunes but clicking on it brings the rotateing ball and after a certain while the message that the iTunes Libary is not responding and that I should check my Firewall settings. Which I did on both computers and they are wide open. 'Ipfw show' in Terminal brings back the message 'Open for any to any communication' also on both computers.
Makeing use of the File sharing service from the MacBook to the MacMini works but it takes a extreme long while until the shared folder appears on the MacBook.
Trying to access from the Mac Mini my MacBook for all these services is no problem.
One more thing is that my Mac Mini cannot access the Wireless Lan router anymore thru the Web Browser or thru a Ping. Here I get the message 'Ping Send to: permission denied'. I changed the Router still the same message. Internet traffic is only possible after I manually applied a DNS Server with its IP number.
Anyone out there who could help? I'm close to completely reinstall my Mac Mini but would naturally love to avoid this.

    wireduck,
Highlight the music folder and on the keyboard type (Command) + i: on the window that opens scroll down if need and click on the lock on the bottom right. Type in an Admin User name and password. Then under the (Sharing & Permissions:) make sure the users you want to open the folder are listed and that there (Privilege) is set to @ least Read. If not hit the ( + ) sign and add them. After you have that all set up click on the little gear next to the ( - )s sign and (Apply to a enclosed items). that way each user can read the files. After that the little ( - ) sign should be gone on the folders.
    Hope that helps.

  • 10.6.5 allows rename of Public folder on Mac Mini but not on MacBook Pro

I have 10.6.5 running on a brand new Mac Mini and it lets me rename my Public folder so I can recognize it easily on my home network. My one year old MacBook Pro has this renaming option grayed out and I can't find how to enable it. I've looked at the sharing preferences and other places and I've searched this support forum.
Any ideas of what I might be forgetting to check, or set, or disable, or something?

Thanks for the tip. I marked my question solved, but I'm not really sure why one computer lets me rename and the other doesn't. I'll bet you're right and I shouldn't be renaming that stuff. I used Time Machine to go back to before I did that.
I'm now connecting to both machines as a registered user and I can ignore the Public folders anyway.
One thing still puzzles: the MacBook connects to the Mini almost instantly, but the Mini takes maybe a minute or more to connect to the MacBook. I thought about it waking the disk from sleep, but I've tried this right after making the MacBook do something to make sure it's spinning the disk. Maybe I'll play with it some more and search for answers or post another question later.

  • Organising/Syncing photos between iPad & folder on Mac mini

    Hi folks.
Hoping somebody out there can help, though judging by the sheer volume of complaints I've seen here with similar problems, I'm not too hopeful...
Trying to keeping my problem simple & to the point here:
    1) I regularly import photos (which I have painstakingly re-named) from a designated sync folder on my Mac mini, via iTunes
    2) No matter what I've re-named my photos, they are obviously not organised by name when viewed in the 'Photos' app on my iPad3. From what I have read, apparently they are displayed by modified date... (VERY helpful Apple!!! Not).
    3) Following some tips here, I purchased 'Photo Manager Pro'. However, when I import the photos from an album on my iPad, into 'Photo Manager Pro', all the file names are different, so using its extra organising options is hopeless, as my original filenames are gone! Now, are my photos being renamed from the initial sync between iPad and Mac mini (via iTunes), or between the import between iPads 'Photos' app and 'Photo Manager Pro'???
    So my question(s) are:
    A) When you sync photos between a chosen folders on a Mac, and the iPad (via iTunes), are the files renamed when transferred to the iPad? If they are, is there a way to retain the original names?
    B) Why are the filenames shown within 'Photo Manager Pro' different to the ones I named/imported? (i.e. should say 2013_06_12.JPG, but instead will show, IMG145.JPG for example). Is this a fault of Photo Manager Pro, or the initial Mac/iPad photo sync process?
    C) Is there any way I can EASILY do something as simple as wanting to import photos into iPad, WITHOUT have to use iPhoto to organise things so they at least display in the correct order? (Sorry Apple fans, I do NOT like iPhoto, and want to keep it out of my work-flow...)
ANY help or advice would be truly appreciated, as I'm soooo close to giving up on my iPad now. Something as utterly simple as this should not be so complicated to work around, surely?! On the iPad I miss the drag & drop conveniance of Finder on the Mac, and the ability to just simply hit a menu button and organise things they way I want to see them (being as I own and paid for the gear!). I am stunned it is so 'messy' on the iPad...
    Thanks muchly folks.
    - John

This can be done but its a bit tricky.
If you want to retain files names when importing photos into photo manager pro you need to use iTunes not the "photos" app.
    1) open itunes
    2) click the iPad button
    3) Apps tab
    4) at the bottom of the pane look for "File sharing"  select the PhotoMgrPro icon
    5)  the the pane next to it should now be called "PhotoMgrPro Documents. Click the add button.
    6) Slect the desired images for import, click "add."
I need to manage multiple large collections of sales photos in PhotoMgrPro and I found that importing one collection at a time was the easyest way to manage.
    7) Open PhotoMgrPro
    8) create a new folder
    9) Open it and then click the import button on the bottom left.
    10) Select itunes.
    11) import. ( original file names should be intact )
    12) the images should remove themselves from the itunes que after import.
    13) repeat

  • Home Sharing, Sleep Proxy, ATV3, Mac Mini 10.8.2

    Hi All,
Every 15 minutes, my mac mini cuts off iTunes from my ATV 3.  I've timed it.
The ATV and Mini are connected via Wi-Fi and n Time Capsule with the latest firware.  Network is silly fast.  (Ethernet is not an option for these two devices)
This issue appears to coincide with the Mini going in to sleep mode - as set by the defaults in Energy Saver.
I've read the "Troubleshooting Home Sharing" article and yes, wake for network access is checked. I've unchecked it, then re-checked it.   In fact, if I go back to the ATV and hit Play again on my music playlist, it starts up again - meaning this activates the bonjour sleep proxy as expected, no?
So, how do I stop the Mini from cutting it off in the first place?  Why does the Mini go to sleep, when an ATV is streaming from it? It seems to me it should be aware of this...
Yes, I suppose I could tell the Mini never to go to sleep, but this is not a good solution for the life of the unit and is a waste of power.
Worse, this is happening on a just finished bare metal install of 10.8.2 and latest iTunes update in this Mini (I wanted to start from scratch for other reasons)
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Stu

Mine will wake too - the issue is it cutting iTunes off after 15 minutes.
I have just UNchecked the setting to put hard disk to sleep "if possible" and so far, ok.  Power settings remain the same. the iTunes Library in on a raided firwire external setup (as it has always been), so maybe this will do the trick.
    Will report back the results.

  • Consolidating/sharing the files on Mac Mini and iMac

would be grateful for any help on how to consolidate and share the files (iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie) on my old iMac with my new Mac Mini/250GB iomega HD. both macs are connected to the same wireless network.

gjellern - best to read through this article that explains most of what you ask. Please post if a specific part needs elaboration or if you get confused about something. (skip anything about AppleTalk - that is for older pre-OS X computers - best to use the newer sharing technologies version if everyone is on OS X)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461
the short answer is you need to enable Personal File Sharing on each computer that will accept another to see the files that are local to that computer. Then you have to choose to either share a user/password to mount a share.
Once one mac has mounted the other's drive - you can work as if all files were on one computer (copy them - use them over the network, etc...)

  • Help Printing from Windows 7 to shared printer on Tiger/Mac Mini

UGH! My folks have long been running on a Power PC Mac Mini with Tiger. The Mac has an Epson Stylus CX4200 - works great in this configuration. Unfortunately, we have a need to implement a laptop with Windows 7 running. I'd like to print to the Mac's locally-attached printer from the wirelessly-connected laptop.
Anyone know how to configure windows 7 to print to the shared printer attached to the Mac? Any help, greatly appreciated.
    - Brad

    Hello Brad,
If you download and install Bonjour for Windows onto the Windows 7 laptop, this will assist you with finding the printer being shared by the Mac.
Note that the web page does not mention Win7 support, but since Vista is supported there should not be an issue.
I also cannot ever remember using it when I had Tiger on a Mac, so not 100% of it functioning correctly (certainly works when printer is shared by 10.5 and 10.6).
In case it doesn't work, you could manually add the printer queue on Win7. The connection used by Bonjour for Windows is IPP and you will need to know the IP address or name of the Mac sharing the printer. You will also need to know the name set for the Epson, which can be found via the Print & Fax pane.
    The network queue name on the Win 7 laptop needs to be;
    http://maccomputer_name.local:631/printers/PrinterName
    or
    http://IPaddress_of_mac:631/printers/PrinterName
Then for the Printer Manufacturer and Model you can select the HP Color Laserjet 4550 PS. Don't worry about selecting a PostScript (ie PS) driver. Even though your printer probably does not support PostScript, the Mac will convert the incoming PS spool file into the appropriate format used by the Epson.

  • Sharing iTunes with a Mac Mini OS X Mountain Lion Server

I'm adding a Mac Mini OS X Mountain Lion Server to my home network. What options do I have to inetgrate iTunes into the server? Currently my master iTunes library is housed on a RAID on a Mac Pro, home sharing is on, and it interfaces over the network just fine into Apple TV (3rd gen). For instance, with Server can all devices on the network have access to that library?  Could the library stream to the Apple TV in the living room, an iMac in the office, an iPhone in another room all simultaenously? Also, can any Server member order iTunes Store content and cause it it to be placed into the master library on the Ser

My Clients are Running Mountain Lion 10.8.2, my Server is a Mac Mini Lion Server.

No fix yet, my home folders reside on a thunderbolt external hard drive, I also tested having home folders on default server HD and no changes, I called Apple Support a while ago, they replicated the issue, it just does not work on network users, they did not say when will it be fix.

  • My Shared network is breeding Mac minis...

My Finder's Shared network column is beginning to fill up with numbered iterations of my Mac mini, now totaling 24 in all.  Yikes!  And the same sea of Mac mini icons also appears, of course, in the Shared columns of the other three Mac users on our wireless & wired family network.  Is there something weird about our network setup, or in my Mac mini, that might be causing this bizarre proliferation?

A belated reply, sorry:  turning off the Wake for Network Access makes no difference.  I STILL have 23 numbered icons of my Mac mini in the Shared section of the Finder sidebar.  I've run through all the diagnostics I can think of: disconnected all of the mini's HDMI, USB and power cables, shut off its WiFi, reconnected and restarted everything, I've zapped the PRAM and restarted in Safe mode, I've rebooted my Verizon FIOS router, and found normal connectivity between the router and the Mini on the home network.  If there are other troubleshoots out there for this problem, I'd love to know about them. Thing is, there doesn't appear to be any significant impact on performance, at least that I can detect.  It's just that seeing 23 extra versions of your desktop device showing up in the network is just WEIRD.  Has anyone else ever experienced this phenomenon, or is it....(gulp)...just ME?

  • Mac Mini Server is running slow on just one machine.

We have a Mac Mini OS X Server running in our workplace. We have FileMaker installed and we use the server for mostly just shared file storage and FileMaker databases. We have two iMacs on each floor - two upstairs and two downstairs. There is a switcher in each office to maintain a wired Ethernet connection, but today one of the machines is suffering from a really slow connection. All three of the other machines are fine, but this one iMac will take forever either loading FileMaker or connecting to the Server in Finder.
Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this? I'm thinking it might be the iMac but I can't think for the life of me why it would be so slow as the machine runs fine otherwise. Thanks!
