Sharing a folder over the internet for file transfer. Advice needed?

I am just starting up freelance working from home again after several months but am a bit concerned as to whether my internet connection speed is sufficient to handle the largish files I may have to deal with.
I have recently moved house and gone from an area with high speed fibre optic broadband to an area where this isn't available and as such my speeds are significantly lower than before.
Downloading isn't shouldn't be such a problem - I have gone from 30mbs downstream to about 5mbs. In tests I have been able to download fairly large files in an acceptable time.
Uploading finished work is more of a concern as the upstream is severally nobbled.
I have been looking for a solution to this and was wondering if there is a way to set a folder on my Mac that my client could access and download from without me first having to upload to a server (Dropbox, WeTransfer or FTP)?
Is this possible and if so would this make a difference in terms of speed or would the recipient still be restricted by my upload speeds

Numbers-wise, if the client is going to want to access each item you want to give them at least once, it makes sense to use something like DropBox (or whatever in which the end result is you uploading it to a server).
The demand on your upload connection is at worst equivalent were the client to only ever grab it once, and the moment the client wants to grab it a second time, everyone has won for it being on a faster-connection remote server.

  • Xmlnamespaces clause of xmltable: Does it go over the internet for xsd?

    Hi,
I've got a query from xmltable passing an xmltype variable.
    Something like this:
    select id, name, data
    From XMLTable(XMLNamespaces ('https://www3.somesite.es/bla/bla/bla/thexsd.xsd' as "n1" ,
                                        'https://www3.somesite.es/bla/bla/bla/otherxsd.xsd' as "co") ,
                         '/n1:some/tag' passing l_my_xmltype_var
    COLUMNS id        NUMBER(20)      PATH '//n1:id' ,
                                 name        VARCHAR2(9)     PATH '//n1:name' ,
data     VARCHAR2(125)   PATH '//co:datatxt') XThis query is run in a loop, and we are trying to improve its performance.
Dba tells me that everytime the query is run, it has to retrieve both xsd over the internet.
    1. Is this true?
    2. If it is ... Could I store the xsds local or even inside the database? (I've heard something about schema registering)
    Thanks

    julius wrote:
The actual query has over 75 columns. Its major consumption is spent on java, so I have to assume that is due to the underneath parsing process of xmltable.
You are OR doing something (horribly) wrong OR should upgrade to a database version bigger than or equal to 10.2.0.3.x
PLEASE post your database version (all digits!)
Do you mean that, even working with a local xmltable passing an xmltype variable (not an actual structured xml table), registering the schema will do good to the performance?Yep, for example avoiding those JAVA calls... validation via registered XML Schema's is optimized if not only due to its based kernel code, that is C - code
I suppose I would have to:
    1. Register the xsd
    2. Reference it when I create the xmltype variable (adding the second parameter to the xmltype function).
    Correct.
Then, during the xmltable processing, the engine will be smart enough to use the registered xsd info to improve the query performance? Ok, I'm a bit skeptical, but will give it a try.
I will also try to help the processing by specifying the full tree path instead of using "//tag".
It will make a difference (providing you are at least on 10.2.0.3.x regarding using XMLTABLE, that is the XQuery engine...
As a curiosity, all this query optimization quest came when - after a modification - performance of the query dropped from 5 seconds to 90 seconds. Things went south when I added an * in the select list instead of refering the columns with their names. So it doesn't seem a good idea to use * with a high column number xmltableCould be, but can't tell. This kind of issues are depending on a lot of parameters and environment settings. It could be a bind issue or...or...
That's one of the reasons we need the database version to give you a better answer...

  • Help! My iPad's screen is black and unresponsive, but when I plug it in I can hear it make the noise it normally would. I'm unsure what to do and I've been looking all over the internet for solutions and so far none are working.

As I mentioned, the screen is black and unresponsive. However when ever I plug it into either my charger or my lap top it will make the expected sounds, it also [when plugged into my computer] opens up iTunes how ever the device can't be seen on the side bar. So far to resolve the issue I've tried.
    - Attempting to turn it on
    - A reset using the home/sleep button and the power button
    - Plugging it into my computer to see if I can get it working through iTunes [Which so far is fruitless]
    - Holding 3 fingers down in the screen in case my screen curtain was enabled [Nothing happened with that either]
    - Putting it face down over my knee and slapping the back in case a cable was lose [Done this repeatedly and nothing happened]
I don't know what's wrong with it and I've been searching for solutions for about 2-3 hour's now. I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me as I would like to go through as many options as possible before trying to take it into the apple store.
[Side note I had also just updated my iPad two nights before the problems began to occur to the iOS 8 technology. My version of iPad is the iPad 2 with 16GB of memory. I'm not sure how much information will be relevant but I'll give as much as possible is someone is able to help me.]

Apple does not replace screens and your iPad is clearly out of warranty, not that accidental damage would be covered anyway.  If you want to try to have your iPad fixed, there are 3rd party repair centers you can try.  In your google search bar type the following:
    "ipad repair "xxxxx"
Put your city in the "xxxx"  for example, "tampa, fl"
There will likely be some options you could investigate.
Or, you could sell your iPad, even damaged to Gazelle.com and get yourself a shiny new iPad.  And if you do, make sure you add AppleCare+ for $99.  This not only increases your Apple technical support for two full years, but would get you up to two iPad replacements at $49 each.

  • How do I share a folder over the internet with Mountain Lion server?

I am new to using formal servers.  In Snow Leopard I was able to use web sharing to serve a small website and if I wanted to share a folder with someone I would  just provide the person I wanted to share a file with the path to the file inside the sites directory.  With Mountain Lion this functionality was removed from the sharing section of system preferences.
I purchased mountain lion server and was able to restore the website serving ability, but I haven't been able to figure out how to share a folder.  I am still looking over what documentation I can find, but for the most part it just tells me to set up the services without telling me how.  Any assistance would be helpful.  Networking is not my area of expertise.
    Best Regards,
    David Finell

I purchased server to assist with this as I am unfamiliar with the command line protocols for using apache.  Because of the UNIX architechture of OSX and I presume apache, I am uncomfortable using the command line for fear of causing serious problems.
Unfortunately, the documentation that I have seen for mountain lion server is wanting in either its completeness or layout/functionability.  To summarize the server instructions as I understand them.  It just says to configure it and my system to meet my requirements without telling me how.
I am confident that both the apache command line and server are capable of accomplishing what I was able to do before under snow leopard.  I just haven't figured out how.
I was able to provide a link to family and clients like http://ipaddress/~user/folder
    This no longer works.

  • I'v read all over the internet for decent export settings for mpg but cant find any. Please help.

    Hai!
I have been searching for good export settings to use as I export my mpg files in adobe premier cs4
But all my results are so crapy!
I can see they are good in premiere, but after export they are as bad as if I would use windows movie maker.
I found that AVI uncompressed only gives out the sound, no images.
Avi compressed gives that bad look.
QT animation gives also bad look.
Mp4 got a max resolution of 340 x 240, so we not even gona discust that one..
My movies are in native MOD files. I convert em by simply changing the extension to mpg
    720x576 resolution
    25 fps
    48k Hz compressed audio
    Any more info needed?
Thanks alot for helping me, I really looked at many threads and stuff
over internet to find a solution but i couldn't.
This is really urgent, the movie MUST be done within 2 days. Or else i get an F

    >My movies are in native MOD files. I convert em by simply changing the extension to mpg
You are starting with compressed files... and then you compress again... that is a DOUBLE hit on quality
You might try some other software (no, I don't know which one) to edit your files and export without re-compressing

  • Connecting to a database over the internet

    Hello ,
Ok heres an interesting question -
I would like to have an applet running on my browser which needs to connect to a central server over the internet, which in turn will need to connect to a database and query some results. These results will be stored as flat files within the server.
At the moment, I have a URL that connects to the database via the
internet and that is working. However I don't think my applet on my browser will be able to create a flat file on that server direclty.
Could some one please tell me how to go about this problem?
    Shalini

Yes, put a servlet in between the applet and database. Let the servlet interace with the database on the applet's behalf and write that file on the server side.

  • Steps for File Transfer through FTPS...!!!

    Hi ,
Can anyone please tell the steps for file transfer with FTPS.
Does PI file adapter has bulilt in feauture to handle this? or
Do we need to deploy anything to handle this?
Do we need to install any certificates by requesting from partner or It will do the encryptions/authentications on its own?
Any additional Steps we need to mention in File receiver adapter while we send the file through FTPS?
File is going through port 1090(unsecure connection) but it is not going through port (990) which is a secure connection.
    Please suggest me.

    Hi Shabarish,
We got the certificate from the partner and loaded into the trusted CA's. I tried running by giving

  • Best way to transfer large files over the Internet?

What is the best way to transfer files that are too large to send by e-mail over the internet, preferably ways that are free or very cheap and are easiest for sender and receiver to work with?
I assume one way is by ftp, but would that necessarily mean buying space on a server somewhere that both I and my recipients can get to? or is there a way to avoid this cost?

you can use a cloud storage like Mobileme (not free) or DropBox (free up to 2GB).
you can also use direct file sharing over internet. no extra software or 3rd party services required. that's what I use to move files between my home and work computers.

  • Share files over the internet between PC and MAC server

    The set up:
A MAC OS X 10.3.9 server running on a local network in the office sharing files with 15 windows XP and MAC.
    The problem:
Can't connect a windows XP away (from home over the internet) to see files being share by the MAC server. I can do this with an other MAC from my home when I go to "Connect to server" and then I type the IP adress of my MAC server at the office, login with the user ID and then can see files on the server. When I am at the office, there is no problem with the windows XP machine to connect to the MAC server. When I am at home, I can connect with my windows XP machine to the MAC server at the office for FileMaker server (reside on MAC server at office), but I can not see the files shared on the MAC server over the internet when I connect via windows explorer serveradress
(no firewall on the MAC server).
    Thank you

I would like to know this, too. I'm trying to set up something with my bother on a PC. How does he make a connection on windows? I don't know what to tell him to do.
Gabriel, do you have Wndows Sharing activated under Services in your Sharing Prefs?

  • How can I download a file over the internet from a WebDAV server?

I am trying to download a file over the internet from a WebDAV server. I've tried doing it with Datasocket as suggested in these articles,
<a href="http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/f3cc5f7e60a75cb2862567e700696abf?opendocument">Retrieving an Unformatted Text File via FTP or HTTP Using DataSocket</a>

but all I get is error 1181 (protocol unrecognized by Datasocket).
I know I have the URL correct, because I can put it into a web browser and it works fine - I can download the file manually.
But I want to have a LabVIEW program do the download automatically.
I have the internet toolkit, but don't have the foggiest clue how to use it, and am using LabVIEW 7.1
I am a bit out of my depth here, so any advice welcome.
    Regards,
    Mark.

    MIG,
What is the URL to the website? Is it an FTP site? The articles you referenced are for specific transfer protocols. If the stie you're trying to get to doesn't follow these protocols, then you'll get the error you're seeing. You may have to use ActiveX to control IE and download the files programmatically.

  • Best Way To Set Up Screen Sharing Over The Internet

What is the best/simplest way to set up screen sharing over the internet so I can remotely control my Mac at home from my Mac at work? My Mac at work is running 10.5.6, my Mac at home is running 10.4.11.

    simplest
Get both Macs up to Mac OS X (Leopard). Then use Apple's MobileMe Back-to-my-Mac service.
Or, use iChat screen sharing along with the iChat free 3rd party Chax add-on which allows selected iChat Buddies to auto-accept an iChat screen sharing request. Free AOL Instant Messaging accounts can be used as the iChat accounts.
If you do not want to upgrade all systems to Leopard...
Next would be using the free LogMeIn.com account, or similar service. This will work
The above avoid needing to figure out how you get through the home routers, and provide encrypted screen sharing sessions.
After that you need to arrange for router port forwarding. If you want secure connections, then you should arrange to port forward the SSH port 22, then use ssh tunnels for VNC based screen sharing connections. There are GUI based utilities that will help setting up SSH tunnels. Do some searches over at VersionTracker.com or MacUpdates.com

  • How secure is USB disk file data over the Internet?

I have an Airport Extreme with an external USB drive attached. I can successfully connect to the drive both from the internal network (LAN) and from the Internet. I have secured my drive using user accounts granting either read-only or read-write access. When connecting from the Internet, how secure is the data when it is being transferred over the Internet between the USB drive and my remote device (Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc.)?

Thank you, Kappy. I sincerely appreciate your input.
It appears that the Airport Express "Share On WAN Port" is not really a secure connection. File data is not secure as it is transferred over the Internet, which is what I suspected. So, in order to secure the data one would need to establish a VPN (or equivalent) connection to the local network and then access the Airport Extreme disk data via the VPN connection. I should note that in this scenario the "Share On WAN Port" would not be needed and should probably be disabled. For me, a VPN connection is necessary unless I only want to store and share files and data that I don't mind others obtaining while in transmission.
This is what I expected, but was hoping for something along the lines of what Apple's Messages does, which encrypts data from end-to-end between two (or more) users in a conversation to ensure the data/content is secure.
    Thanks again.

  • Transfering Files from one computer to another over the internet using ftp

I am not sure if this is the right section to post this question but i wanted to know if it was possible to use the mac ftp file sharing to transfer a file from a friends computer to mine. He is not on my network we were hoping to transfer the file over the internet the file is quite larger about 2gb. Can any one help me in telling me a way that i could do this thanks.

Enable FTP in Preferences on the target machine.
You will need the IP address...
You can find it by going here
    http://whatismyip.com/
This may be a problem if the target machine is behind a router.
If all goes well... Go to Connect to Server.. and enter
    ftp://ipaddress
    OR
If you want to send a large file then you can check this out...

  • Can i use it as a sharing storage over the internet ?

plz, help me to know if time capsule supported to be sharing storage with the internet likns that i can share my file on it to any frind over the internet connection .

You cannot do it from a PC. There is no applications that will make a PC access AFP files. You cannot connect to the TC with SMB due to blocking of SMB by ISP as it is insecure.
The only way to do this is replace the current router with vpn one.. and use vpn from the remote computer to the router. The TC will be connected by bridge to the router and can be accessed by SMB ie windows networking.
