Sharing a monitor

I have a G4 (467 MHz) that boots OS 9. I am planning on getting a mini to do some video work that my G4 can't do. Yet, I still need the G4 for some programs that only run on OS 9. In an effort to save money, I plan to use my current keyboard/mouse and monitor with the mini. Is there a way to 'share' the monitor with out disconnecting/connecting it?

You can certainly do this - a KVM box can provide switching between two systems sharing the same keyboard, monitor and mouse. The only problem may be the nature of connections available on it since your mini uses USB to connect keyboard and mouse and DVI or VGA to connect the display. Your G4 should also have USB for mouse and keyboard, but may have ADC or DVI or VGA connectors for display.
If the connectors match, then have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVM_switch for an explanation of what a KVM switch does and how it's connected, then if that seems to suit your need, pick an appropriate one. http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=143&name=KVM-Switches may be a good place to start, though they are common devices found in many computing stores.

  • PC & Mac Sharing 1 Monitor and KB Setup - How to use KB/Mouse for both?

I am purchasing a Mac Mini to replace my personal computer. I have one monitor/KB/mouse setup shared between my work and personal PC, switched back and forth via a USB KVM switch (http://www.iogear.com/product/GCS632U/)
I want to go with the Apple bluetooth mouse and keyboard with the purchase of my mac mini, but how can I make it so it will work with both my work PC (Windows XP Dell laptop docked) and my new mac mini?
Should I purchase a USB bluetooth dongle and connect that to the mini KVM switch? Or should I just plug the USB dongle into my docked laptop and pair with both the mini and the PC (if pairing to both is even possible)?
    Thanks in advance.

If both are on your intranet, try Synergy.
I personally use the Wormhole.  You can drag between desktops.

  • Mini and Playstation sharing a monitor

    Hi
Currently we are using an old crt with our Mac Mini and an old television with our PlayStation. I would like to buy a new lcd display (2 different inputs) which could be shared with both the Mini and our PS2.
Does anyone use a setup like this? What display resolution do you recommend? What about the size, is 17" enough? Experiencies?
    Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I am using a Samsung 17" LCD TV in such an arrangement. I can't remember the model number of the Samsung, but it doesn' t matter because it is 3-years old and I am sure no longer for sale. The newer ones are better anyway, and cheaper. The display is 1280x768 which is pretty useable as a computer monitor through the VGA port. 17" is adequate for our setup but it really depends on how close you sit as to whether 17" will work for you. You'll probably want to go bigger if this is your primary TV.

  • Mac and PC sharing one Monitor

A quick question to those of you that use both a PC and Mac on one montor.
Which switch box do you use?
Which switch box do you recommend?
Which switch box should be avoided?
I have grown tired of having to unplug my keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor every time I want to have a quick game on my PC.
Thanks to all that take the time to reply.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.42 GHz PowerPc G4 256 MB DDR SDRAM 80GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive iPod Shuffle

I use a Belkin KVM switch (Model: F1DL102U). The link below will take you directly to the model I use on Belkin's website:
    http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?MerchantId=&ProductId=164060
I purchased mine at CompUSA for $69.
It is pretty nice. It's got a single button to toggle between two computers. And if one computer is already in use, then it will automatically switch to the other computer when you turn it on.
For example, if I am using my Mac Mini, then the switch will automatically switch-over to the PC when I turn on the PC. Then, when I turn the PC off, the switch will automatically move back to the Mac Mini.
But, I can use the button any time I want to toggle / switch between the 2 computers.
This switch has 2 USB ports, 1 VGA video port, 1 Audio in port, and 1 Audio Out port.
I have found that you can easily share multiple devices on the USB ports.
For example, I have my mouse plugged into my keyboard, and then the keyboard plugged into the first USB port on the Belkin KVM switch. Then, I plug my USB printer into the second USB port on the KVM switch.
So, if you have a keyboard with multiple USB ports, or a USB Hub, then you would be able to share multiple USB devices between both computers.
In my arrangement, I am sharing a keyboard, mouse, and USB printer. Additionally, I have a pair of speakers and a monitor shared between the two systems.
Everything works pretty good, and I don't really have any complaints. I'm actually quite happy with the setup.
I found several places online to purchase it, but purchased it on CompUSA's website. I placed the order online, and picked it up in the store (had my wife stop in on her way home).
I've had mine now for around 6 or 8 months. It's been working good for me.
    Hope this helps.

  • OEM  for shared pool monitoring

    Hi,
can you please explian mehow can I monitor shared pool usage from OEM and setup threshold on it
    Your help is appreciated
    Thanks

You didn't mention your release, edition and if you are using Automatic Shared Memory Management(ASSM) or not.
At http://tahiti.oracle.com after choosing your release you may search for "shared pool memory advisor" Also if you are using Enterprise Edition Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor(ADDM) will guide you if there is a shared pool specific performance need.

  • Sharing 1 monitor, keyboard and mouse

I have a brand new macbook (bought March 1, 2007). I additionally own a Dell tower running Windows XP. Is it possible to have the macbook and Dell PC share 1 monitor, keyboard and mouse via a KVM switch? How do I do it? What cables do I need?

  • Sharing Apple Monitor between G5 and windos computer

I seemed to have read that it is possible to connect a windows computer to the Apple monitor and share the monitor between the two computers. Anyone know what I need to to that?

Many newer monitors have dual inputs. For example, my Viewsonic has an HDMI (Mac) and VGA (PC) input. Toggling between the two is a matter of pressing a monitor button.

  • Your kind thoughts on sharing a monitor

    Comrades!
I have a Macbook Pro (dual core 2.5 Intel). I just bought it used from a good friend (so I can burn down his house if things go awry).
I want to use it with my Apple Cinema Display (OK, you say, go for it) but ah-ha, I need to make my life endlessly complicated - whilst trying to simplify it (a bit like this sentence, really).
    But I digress.
What I want is to connect my ancient G5 Power Mac to the same monitor as the Intel MacBook Pro.
I need to go back and forth between the two machines but only have room for one monitor). I have heard that doo-dahs called a KVM can do this. I only want to share the monitor - not the keyboard or mouse).
Any thoughts anyone on how to do this (other than buy a bigger house)?

I have managed an on-the-cheap version of what you are asking. My late-model G4 tower is driving a 22" widescreen monitor that has both VGA and DVI ports. And the monitor came with both cables. When it's not traveling, the MBP (Late 2007 2.2G 15") sits to the right of the G4 tower.
I have both the VGA and the DVI cables connected to the monitor at all times. The DVI cable hangs over the back of the workstation near the MBP. When I need to use a larger monitor on the MBP, I shut down the G4 and pick up the loose DVI cable and plug it to the MBP. I don't have to take the VGA cable off to do this.
Pros: dirt cheap--I had everything I needed already; I don't have to fight the cables on the back of teh monitor; I can have the MBP on the big monitor in seconds.
Con--I have to shut down the G4

  • Sharing one monitor and keyboard with two Macs

    Hi,
I have two Macs - one Pro and one G5. I want to be able to use both easily, using just one keyboard and monitor. Can anyone recommend the best way of doing this, and what splitter I should buy?
    Thanks!

    Hi
I like the Belkin Flip - it's really simple for a 2-computer setup and works well with the Mac.

  • Sharing a monitor with a Windows machine

Following the general advice in this forum, I would like to install an old Windows-pc to run some games, rather than using a Windows emulator. Would it be possible to share my Iiyama Vision Master 400 (works well with the Mini) with a pc?

If the plugs are like this, sure.

  • Shared variable / DSC problen

    hello out there,
i've got a big problem with labview dsc. i've created library within
an project with several network-bind shared vars (connected to a
symbolic siemens opc server). the problem is that sometimes, when i
use these variables (just drag and drop from the projectexplorer), the
values seemes to be currupted (especially 0). siemens' opc scout say's
there is a value and also NI's shared variable monitor do so.
    open to all criticism.
    r.p.

Shared variables must be initialized with a known value, and the node must be ran at least once, before predictable behavior can be expected. They don't behave like plain old global variables. The shared variable manager proves this out, as you've seen.
The easiest way to accomplish this is to have each shared variable you'll use in your application's initialize routine, and  "read it out" and write to it once before ever using it in the main application.

  • Watch/Monitor Buttons do not show the correct state

I programmed several Watch buttons on SPA500 module and some buttons stay lit red even though the phones are not used.  When pressing the button it does call the Vacant phone.
How can I fix the state to be correct and only be lit red when the corrsponding phone is used?

    Hi Guys,
    Was this problem ever resolved?
I am having the same issue. Cisco CME on 2851 router. We have several Cisco 7970 IP Phones all provisioned at the same time, and all working fine. I have a 7914 module monitoring the phones and one is showing as off hook. (BLF -1).
The phone that is showing offhook is ephone 7, it is being monitored by ephone 4. I have done factory reset, firmware upgrade, reset and everything recommended above but still having the issue. The red light indicates that the phone is offhook or not present although it is cleary registered to the CME.
You can see from the show ephone register below (ephone 4 is monitoring ephone 7) that ephone 7 is showing as offhook when it is not and is also registered and working. It shows:
    button 33: cw:1 ccw:(0 0)
      dn 22 number 122 CH1   IDLE         CH2   IDLE         watch(BLF on phone -1) shared with monitor-ring
I have attached config and tftp debug below. If any one can shed some light it would be much appreciated.

  • Shared variables missing in distributed system manager

I have multiple shared variables in a library (.lvlib).  These are all network-published shared variables.  I can see the library in Distributed System Manager but not the variables in the library.  When I look at the properties page in Share Variables Properties Dialog, aliasing is not enabled because the library is hosted on the same machine as the application.
I tried to run the Shared Variable Monitor application but was given a Runtime Error for TagMonitor.exe; "This application requested Runtime termination in an unusual way.  Contact application support team."
I also tried undeploying and deploying the library as suggesting by KB 56PCQ3RR.
Why does Distributed System Manager see the shared variable library but not the shared variables in it?

    Hello faustina,
Has there been any software or hardware changes on the application since the error occurred? Also I would recommend to format and reinstall the software on your Real-Time target, after this you can follow Matt’s recommendation to test this behavior with a new project and single shared variable.
    Regards
    Jose R

  • What happened to my shared variable DSC alarms?

I would like to programmatically alter the alarm levels of my shared variables using the recommended datasocket write method, but for some reason my alarm levels disappear.  If I open Variable Monitor, sometimes the alarm data isn't there.  I have them configured, and sometimes they are there.  This also means that the Datasocket URL doesn't exist for the alarm levels.  Why is that?

    Hi Brian,
I am not sure what resource pointed you to using Datasocket Write to change the alarm levels of a shared variable programmatically, but that is not the recommended method.
One resource that you I suggest you check out is the example called Library Generation.lvproj, it is in the example finder under Toolkits and Modules->Datalogging and Supervisory Control->Fundamentals. This shows how to add variables to a library and set the alarms.
For an existing library, please check out this Knowledgebase article, which describes getting a shared variable reference. One you have the reference, you can use the property "Alarming..." to set Hi, Lo, etc. Then, once you're done, redeploy the library programmatically (Deploy Library.VI).
