Sharing a mounted drive

Hello, I was wondering if there was anyway to share a mounted drive. I encrypted one of my drives using truecrypt, and I was wondering if there was way to share that drive with AFP and SMB. I tried creating a link to the drive and placing it in / and making that a share point but it just "bugged" out and didn't let me. Any ideas on how to do this?
Cheers.

Use the Server Admin application to specify the drive as a share point. For what it is worth, I have been told in the past that sharing the root level of a volume is a security risk. I do not recall why, I just recall reading that at some point. I always share a directory at the top level instead of the volume itself.

  • No longer able to mount drives attached to G5 on network

    Hi all,
I hope someone can help with this issue. I have a G5 which has additional USB and SATA drives attached to it. My MacBook Pro used to connect to the G5 through my Belkin Router either over cable or wireless. If I went to Network > G5 on the MacBook Pro, I was given the option to mount 3 volumes on the G5 - the HD, and the two external drives.
Last week I added a Airport Extreme base station. Now on the MacBook Pro, when I go to Network > G5 it will only show me the G5 Hard drive, and no longer gives me the option to mount the other volumes. I cannot even type the addresses in manually. On one of these additional volumes is all my music, and my Apple TV can still stream from this so the volume must be visible somewhere.
I went into Sharing on the G5 and also noticed Personal File Sharing is unticked. If I tick it or press Start it just does nothing, so I can no longer set this up - unsure if this is related.
    Any help gratefully received!
    Kind Regards
    Craig Sawyer

Hi Craig, and welcome to the discussions,
First we need to figure out the unable to tick thing, I'd start with getting Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
If that doesn't cure that problem, try dragging these files to the desktop & reboot...
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
Once we fix it, Sharepoints is the best way to insure Sharing of External Drives...

  • Cannot access shared external hard drive with other mac accounts

I cannot access a shared external hard drive with other mac accounts (all accounts are on the same macbook Pro). The shared external drive is shared via time capsule and is connected (of course) in USB. I see well this external hard drive as a shared disk with my main account. Yes shared option has been activated with the Airport Utility .. but when I open other account these othe accounts can see the external drive but cannot access to its content that is flagged with a no way sign. Strangely enough when I close my main account and start opening a new session with one of the other account then fine I can access the external hard drive and its content .. BUT then it is from my main account than I cannot access its content the no way sign showing ..
Looks like only one account at a time can access the content of this SHARED external hard drive .. any one as an idea on how to really make it a shared hard drive so that all accounts on the same mac can also access it ? I am at my wit ends on this case. THANKS ..

Results of my enquiries at Apple Genius Bar .. the guys found the problem interesting. They've been unable to provide a fix neither to give any explanation as to the reason why. To be fair I was not much impressed by the technical level demonstrated ..
In the mean time I have found that if account no.1 can see the shared external drive content and in such case account no.2 (same Mac computer) cannot see its content (only the external HD with a no way sign) this account no.2 can UNMOUNT (by ejecting) this external HD from account 1 and then remount it (just clicking on the TC shared part in a finder window) and .. see and access its content ; whilst account no.1 cannot see its content anylonger. Unless it unmounts the shared external HD and remount it .. then account no.2 can see its content anylonger. This can goes on an on.
So eventually YES the TC can allow to share a USB external drive between several accounts and a same Mac .. BUT this require to unmount and remount EACH time the external drive is accessed from a "no.2 account". So OK to share files with seldom access but not practical in case of frequent access needed.
I just I have now to figure how iTunes can automatically unmount and remount a shared external HD when it needs to access one of this shared HD content from on time account no.1 and then next time from account no.2. May be I am asking too much ..

  • How to remove a mounted drive at startup in a mobile account, using netinfo

How does one remove an mounted drive at startup in a mobile account, using netinfo?
One of the user automatically mounts a network drive on her new intel Macbook in her portable account. Trouble is that the network drive is only available on the intranet. So when she is on the road, it take the Macbook very long 3-4 minutes before it let's her log in.
Simply I thought to remove the drive on her macbook through the system preferences -> account -> login items. However the "login Item" GUI is very slow to respond and if it respond it does not let me remove the network drive. I tried this both on the intranet and off the network.
I tried to remove the mounted drive at start up through the workgroup manager, but it does not show up there.
So I thought that I try to use netinfo on the local machine. But I can't find where mounting info is stored in a mobile account. I thought it would be in the local @ localhost or should I connect to an other DB?

The login items are not stored in Netinfo, they are stored in loginwindow.plist in the users Library/Preferences. You can either remove the entries for the server or simply trash that file and let a default one get recreated.

  • Anyone know why Adobe X & Adobe XI Crashes my shared network printer driver when printing a PDF

Anyone know why Adobe X & Adobe XI Crashes my shared network printer driver when printing on a domain, this only happens when I print a PDF.
I then have to restart the print spooler to get my printouts sent to the printer. I am using a Windows 7 32 & 64 bit environment on a domain. Users who aren't on the domain experience no issues and their printer drivers remain online and not grayed out.
When I print a PDF using Foxit Reader or Nitro PDF then all works fine, the moment I open a PDF using Adobe Reader X or XI then the shared network printer driver bombs out and I am back restarting the print spooler. If we roll back to Adobe 9 then we dont have any issues.
When you create a local printer driver all works fine, the problem is we don't encourage local printer drivers due to security.
We use Ricoh printer drivers, the MPC5501 PCL5C, driver version 1.2.0.0 with PDK version 12.65. We have also tried the PCL6 printer driver and Universal printer driver. All give the same result. The printer uses Winiprint Print processor using RAW as the default data type.
We have contacted Adobe Global Support who advised that they cannot assist with this query as this is on a Domain environment and we have to contact our IT Department.
We would really appreciate some professional help here to get a fix for this issue in order to address potential future occurance's

  • So slow listing network shared folders and drives.

    Hi!!
I'm reporting a very slow connection between my MacBook Pro 13" (snow leopard) and my MacPro 8 core (leopard). When I try to reach the macpro in finder (shared) passed 1 or 2 minutes until the system ask me user/pass, then show me the list of my shared folders and drives. Navigating through them is ok, ut when I return to the main list, SnowLeopard again waits 1 minutes or 2 to show. Before, the main list always remain there.
    Any help??

Same sort of problem here. Screen Sharing also doesn't work.
Pretty sure it's DNS, as if I temporarily remove my router from the equation (by, say, using a manual IP address instead of DHCP on the machines and leaving DNS blank) everything works and is instant - except of course for the internet. Put it back to DHCP (which uses the router for DNS) and it's slow again (and screen sharing doesn't work at all).
However, OpenDNS hasn't helped (probably because it's a private address range?)
The network is 192.168.0.0/24 with gateway and DNS server 192.168.0.1, which is a Draytek Vigor 2600G ADSL router.
This has only happened recently, I guess Snow Leopard or one of its updates has forced reverse DNS lookups for everything.
As I understand it, AFP is supposed to use Bonjour for hostnames ending in .local and bypass DNS altogether, but despite checking that they end in .local (an automatic thing) in System Preferences it doesn't seem to do this any more.
Any way to turn off these reverse DNS lookups?

  • Sharing External Hard Drive with Windows PC

I just purchased the Maxtor Turbo III. I can read/write to/from my PowerBook to the Maxtor, but I cannot even see the drive when it is attached to my PC. I'm assuming that it the drive has been formatted for OSX but that it needs to be reformatted for PC.
Is there a formating method that can be applied such that both Windows PC's and Macs can read and write to the drive?
    Thanks

  • Question: Best method for mounting drives at log-in time?

I would like to know what others consider the best method for mounting drives at log-in time is? I can see a few methods such as start-up items on the client, start-up items on the server to managed users and possibly a start-up script. One wrinkle in the scenario is that users can log-in directly to the server so the method should allow that to happen gracefully. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Bigsky,
You are asking some really fundamental questions that require quite a lot of explanation. Luckily Apple has some great documentation on their server software.

  • Mounting drives on the desktop for all users

    Hi
Is there a way of mounting drives ( like USB pens) on the desktop for all users please?
It's a causing a lot of confusion here... you think the USB drives aren't working when you can't see them being mounted in front of you.
I do realise you can set this in Finder/Preferences but I wondered if there were a way of just making it the default for any user that logs in ( whether locally or to the domain).
    Thanks for your assistance.

Hmmmm....why would anyone disable this basic thing?
Here's a reason. I don't use the Desktop, so why would I want the drives to pop up on my desktop.
They appear in my Sidebar in any Finder window.
That's why I turned it off on my system. You'd have to ask the 1000 users why they turned it off.
However, I'm not sure I understand what you want. If you mount a usb drive on your system, and share it out over the network, it is not a Hard Drive on any network user's desktop. It is a network share.

  • Using mounted drives for storage

iMovie 08 only allows for saving on internal drives, or connected FireWire drives. Well, I have 2 TB of storage on an old Mac connected over Gigabit Ethernet, and I intend to use it. Here is the solution:
    1. Move your iMovie Events onto your choice of mounted drive
    2. Delete the iMovie Events folder, located in your Movies folder
    3. Use Coctail or the Terminal to create a symbolic link of the moved iMovie Events folder (on your external drive) and place that link back in your home Movies folder
    4. Start up iMovie again, and you will see that all is well
Using regular Alias did not work for me. I got the thumbnails, though with a warning triangle, but not the source to play.

no, I use FAT32 so I can use it on both Macs and PCs
Note that the Mac doesn't require using the same disk format on both "disks" of a partitioned drive. You could use Disk Utility to partition the drive and format each partition whatever you choose.
Partitioning/Reformatting will erase everything on the drive, so make backups.
Not sure how your PC will respond to the presence of the Mac partition, however. (No experience.) You may want to do some testing.

    Hi guys,
So i installed a new hard-drive in my HTPC today running win 7. All has been going fine until i attempted to share the drive, all appears to have been set-up correctly on the windows side (enabled sharing on the drive etc)
However when i attempt to connect to the drive it comes up with a message saying:

You do not have permission to access the server 192.168........etc
I have two drives that i am trying to share over this network, the first one has been shared for about 6 months and has been working fine, my mac can see it and get files off of it perfectly. I can still connect to this drive now aswell.
It's just this new drive thats causing the issues. Im trying to connect using a registered user
