Sharing a portable drive

I was trying to find ways to backup both my Windows computer and iMac on the same harddrive, and so far, I haven't had much luck. I have an iPod mini, but it's not big enough. It doesn't give me the option to write to cd's because they're not big enough either. Any suggestions?

for cheap money you could throw a second HD in the Compaq and use that to back up the PC...and then use the portable drive for the imac.

  • Cannot access shared external hard drive with other mac accounts

I cannot access a shared external hard drive with other mac accounts (all accounts are on the same macbook Pro). The shared external drive is shared via time capsule and is connected (of course) in USB. I see well this external hard drive as a shared disk with my main account. Yes shared option has been activated with the Airport Utility .. but when I open other account these othe accounts can see the external drive but cannot access to its content that is flagged with a no way sign. Strangely enough when I close my main account and start opening a new session with one of the other account then fine I can access the external hard drive and its content .. BUT then it is from my main account than I cannot access its content the no way sign showing ..
Looks like only one account at a time can access the content of this SHARED external hard drive .. any one as an idea on how to really make it a shared hard drive so that all accounts on the same mac can also access it ? I am at my wit ends on this case. THANKS ..

Results of my enquiries at Apple Genius Bar .. the guys found the problem interesting. They've been unable to provide a fix neither to give any explanation as to the reason why. To be fair I was not much impressed by the technical level demonstrated ..
In the mean time I have found that if account no.1 can see the shared external drive content and in such case account no.2 (same Mac computer) cannot see its content (only the external HD with a no way sign) this account no.2 can UNMOUNT (by ejecting) this external HD from account 1 and then remount it (just clicking on the TC shared part in a finder window) and .. see and access its content ; whilst account no.1 cannot see its content anylonger. Unless it unmounts the shared external HD and remount it .. then account no.2 can see its content anylonger. This can goes on an on.
So eventually YES the TC can allow to share a USB external drive between several accounts and a same Mac .. BUT this require to unmount and remount EACH time the external drive is accessed from a "no.2 account". So OK to share files with seldom access but not practical in case of frequent access needed.
I just I have now to figure how iTunes can automatically unmount and remount a shared external HD when it needs to access one of this shared HD content from on time account no.1 and then next time from account no.2. May be I am asking too much ..

  • How to sync folder on Macbook pro with external portable drive

    Hello,
I am new to mac environment.  I would like to sync up my itunes library from my PC to Macbook Pro. I currently backup my itunes on PC using synctoy 2.1  to  portable drive. I am able to copy folders from portable drive onto macbook pro but would like the abililty to sync ( ie copy the delta) to save time.
    Thanks,
macbook pro - OS X Lion
    PC -XP

It depends on what they are. Generally, a Mac OS X application will have a distinctive icon; if they’re all documents(not Windows applications), double-click all of them.

  • How to export photos from iphoto'11 to portable drive for download?

I have 2 macs in different locations and a 500gb portable drive. I am about to leave one location for the second location and want to take my photos from iPhoto with me on my portable drive.
What is the best way to do this? I do have time capsule on the 1st iMac.
I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 for editing on my iMac. I have a backup catalog Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and the folder 'my pictures' from my PC (on way to recycle - at last) on the portable drive.
I am not currently using organizer from Adobe Photoshop 9 -but using events from iPhoto.

    Depends on what you want
If your want your iPhoto library then drag it to the external drive - in the new location depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library command to choose the library you want - the local one or the one on the EHD
If you want to merge them then use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to merge the library on the EHD with the local library
If you want just the photos then select them and export them to the external drive and import them into the other library
Explain exactly what you want if none of these help

  • How do I move my movies from iTunes to a portable drive in oder to free up disk space?

I have less than 10% of disk space free and often receive a message that my strat up disk is nearly full.  I therefore want to free up space by moving my movies to a portable drive.  How?  I want to keep the movies on my iPad, though.

Delete them from the local computer.  Nothing gets moved.  If the content was purchased from iTunes it should be available for download again in the future.

If the device is synced with iTunes on the computer and the content is deleted from iTunes it will also be removed from the device.
Realistically, if you want to keep the content, keep it stored locally.  Purchase an external drive to store the content on.  Keep in mind that iOS devices are NOT backup devices, they merely mirror the content in the iTunes library on the computer.

  • Move or copy imovie projects to a portable drive

I want to move iMovie Projects and/or Events from one Mac to another Mac. I was told by an Apple technician that the best way is to use thumb drives, but that they need to be formatted for Mac OS, which I have done. I can see the thumb drive showing up in the Events Library, but it has a triangular yellow "warning" icon superimposed on it. No evidence of the thumb drive in the Projects library. I cannot drag and drop either events or projects into this icon, even though the Apple tech had me do that with the portable drive he had at the store. (I did not have the thumb drives with me then.) Must be doing something wrong, but what?
    Thanks!

If you right-click on your thumb drive and click Get Info, you should be able to tell how your thumb drive is formatted. You want Mac OS Extended (journaled). Fat32 will not work.

  • Time Machine no longer recognizes my WD portable drive for storage

The portable drive use to work fine for storage for my time machine. Now the drive does not show in desktop when plugged in. Time machine is directing me to set up but does not recognize any device. Thank you for any help.
    J.

Same exact thing happened to me... Time Machine ceased to recognize external drive - stopped backing up (obviously) then drive would no longer appear on desktop. After multiple reboots, plug/unplug, and cable jiggling - the drive returned to the desktop... Time Machine STILL does not see it. Using Disk Utilities to verify - hopefully repair. Many errors appearing in log! Isn't it a little odd that so many external drives of different models are all failing while using the same program... ?

  • HT202796 I can not copy, modify, any file from my Mac to external hard disk,  of the seagate brand (fast HDD Portable Drive)  I don´t know  if I need some software to copy and  modify files in my hard disk external ? Could you help me please?

    Hello I have a iMac with 3.4 GHZ intel core I7, memory 16 GB 1333 MHZ DDR3, and OS X 10.9.4 Software.
I have problems when I try to copy or modify any file from my MAC to MY PORTABLE DRIVE/DISQUE (external hard disk).
my external hard disk have the next features:
    brand: Seagate
    4TB
I do not know if I need some software such as: paragon or I need to configure my MAC,
    Please help me..
    Thanks a lot

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Disk utility fails to resize portable drive partitions with error message "requested change in size is too small".

I am using a 1TB WD studio passport portable drive with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I have the portable drive partitioned into 4 volumes: 355 GB, 320 GB, 320 GB, & 4 GB.  But Disk Utility won't allow me to split the third of those into 160 GB /160 GB.  All volumes verify as seeming "to be okay".  Seems if Disk Utility could create me a 4GB partition that 160 GB is plenty big enough, right?  Something's not right; Can you help me with this please?

What is on those partitions and or the partition you want to split in two?
If you don't have any data on partitions or if you can save it someplace else for the time being then why not just Re-Partition the whole drive into the sizes you now want.

  • If I backed up my files on external portable drive using time machine - I bought a new I-Mac - can I upload my music and photos .

Can I install mympictures and music that were back up using time machine from my McBook into my new i-Mac - the back up is on a portable drive.

    Hello:
There should be no problem - although I have never done what you describe.  Attach the drive to your new computer. open Time Machine, and retrive what you wish.

  • Running OSX and apps on a portable drive

Hi all, I share an iMac with my family and I do heavy photo editing and takes tons of pictures for a website I'm doing in iWeb.
My question is how to save hard drive space? I cannot figure a way to make iWeb only use pictures from a portable drive and be able to work with them via iPhoto (and videos via iDVD).
Is it possible to buy a new external drive, load OSX onto it and run my programs on that portable drive -- and have the files also remain on that drive?
That way, I wouldn't suck up all the HD space on what is still our family computer

You can run a separate copy of OSX on the external drive (just use the OSX install disc that came with the computer), but it would be simpler and easier to just store your iPhoto library on the external drive.
I'm assuming you're using your own user account on the computer that's separate from your other family members. If not, this procedure will move the other family members' photos as well as yours, so you might want to make a separate account if you don't already have one (System Preferences -> Accounts -> click the plus sign to add an account).
    1) Drag the iPhoto Library file (inside your Pictures folder) onto the external drive to copy it.
    2) Open up iPhoto while holding the Option key
    3) In the resulting dialog box, choose the iPhoto Library on the external drive. If it isn't in the list, choose Other Library and find the file on the external drive.
All your apps that work from the iPhoto library (iWeb, iDVD, etc) should now use the copy on the external drive.
