Sharing a Printer between XP and Windows 7 computers on a Wireless Network

Does anyone know if you can share a printer on a home network between a windows 7 and an XP SP3 computer?
I had a wireless netowork set up at home with an XP desktop hardwired to a cable modem and a printer with USB connection. I also had an XP laptop with wireless connection to the Internet. I was able to share files between the two compters and remotely connect to the printer (a recently purchased HP Photosmart C4600 series) from the laptop. Everything was fine until I had to replace the desktop.
I replaced the desktop with a laptop running windows 7.  The first problem I had was the new laptop would not connect to the Internet through the existing newtork - neither hardwired or wireless. The problem turned out to be my existing router so I replaced it and the new laptop now connects to the Internet. I set up a new network.
The problem I am having is remotely connecting to the printer with the XP laptop. I have the printer connected to the windows 7 laptop via USB (it is not a wireless printer) and have gone through and set both computers to the same workgroup, turned on file and printer sharing and have tried everything I have read on the microsoft forums including turning on UDP and TCP ports. I turned off firewalls and uninstalled CA security software to eliminate any potential unseen conflicts. I even tired connecting the printer to the XP thinking windows 7 might be "smarter" than XP and I could print remotely from the windows 7 computer. That didn't work either.
I can see the XP computer and access shared folders from the windows 7 computer and vice versa. If I physically connect the XP laptop to the printer via USB I can print so I know the drivers are OK.
The printer icon appears when I bring up the Printers and Faxes window on the XP computer and I am able to view the queue and even change options when I go into Properties. It shows it is selected as the default.
When I try to print remotely from the XP computer I get a message "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current priter setup" - then it lists 3 thing s to try which I have done. I also went through the XP printer troubleshooter program which was a dead end.
HELP!

If networking isn't working out for you, you may want to try out a swtich. Best Buy sells one by IOGEAR that allows for two USB connections to tie into one computer. So long as windows 7 can either download its own driver for the printer for basic features, or if you want to download canon's driver this solution will work. The only draw back is having to bring the laptop near the printer when you need to print.

  • Printing to a printer connected to a Windows computer on a wireless network

In my home I have a DSL internet connection, a Linksys router, one wired Windows computer to the router, and one wireless Mac and one wireless PC. In this configuration, the printer is connected to the wired Windows PC. How can I print directly from my iMac to the printer connected there?
-- Before purchasing the iMac I had a Windows based Laptop that was able to print this way (I would have the wired computer and printer turned on, and then press print on the laptop, and it would come out of that printer). How can I duplicate this for the iMac? Thanks!

No, the problem wasn't ever solved. So I compromised and finally hooked up the free printer that came with my Mac. Although I wasn't able to share a printer, I was able to access files and print them kind of the hard way by enabling windows sharing under Sys Prefs > Sharing > Windows Sharing. And then you need to click on accounts and enter your password. Then use the key that the Mac gives you (Should be something like \\192.168.1.1##\shortname) and then on your PC, go to "My Network Places" and click on "Set up a network place." When prompted choose to enter the location yourself and enter the number address given on the Mac. After that a box should pop up asking you for your name and password (which is that of the Mac) and then you should be able to access all of the files that are on your Mac from your PC and print directly that way. Hope that helped someone. And if anyone can still help me print wirelessly, please do!

  • Sharing photo tags between iPad and Windows

We just got a new iPad and we are working out sharing data between our Windows machines and the iPad. From reading the forums, my understanding is that iOS uses tags rather than a folder hierarchy to view subsets of pictures. Is there a common format for tag info? I read a post from 2007 that said there was not a common tag format yet. I'm hoping that in the interventing time something common has emerged.

Right now, I have Verizon DSL that uses a Westell router. It has 4 ethernet ports on the back in addition to the DSL connections. I have a HP Pavilion with Windows XP in the basement, an iMac G3 in my room, and an intel iMac in our living room all connected to the router by ethernet cables. Each computer is able to access the other computer's files. On the intel iMac I have Microsoft Remote Desktop installed so that I can log into the HP in the basement and control it from the iMac. I haven't tried operating this network wirelessly, but I would imagine that it would be possible. One thing that you might want to check is the router's configuration. My router has settings that either allow or block wireless signals. To access my router's settings I type in 192.168.1.1 in Safari or Internet Explorer. Having all 3 computers on the internet at the same time does not slow the speed of the DSL very much.
I hope this information will help.

  • Sharing Internet Connection between Mac and Windows

    Hi there!
I have a Windows Desktop and a Macbook 13". Am I able to share the Internet between them?
My Mac has Airport to connect wirelessly. So does my PC, except this Wireless connection always fails. I have re-installed the software and so on, but it still is failing.
What I would like to do is to have my PC connect to my Mac (preferably wirelessly, but I will use an Ethernet cable if I have to!) and then use the Wireless Internet connection. Is this possible, or am I just dreaming?
Help with this would be greatly appreciated!

  • Common URL format for sharing file paths between Mac and Windows?

    Hi -
I have to integrate several Macs into a Windows environment. We need to be able to copy and paste file paths to share between all machines. Is there a common URL format that can be used between the platforms?
    On Windows, I have:
    \\server\share\file
    On the Mac:
    smb://server/share/file
    Thank you for your help,
    Steve

On Windows you have what is known as a "UNC".
On the Mac, you have a "URL". It starts with the protocol to use "smb" then gives the path to the item using standard conventions.
    UNC is Microsoft mainly.
The only way I know for Windows to use a URL is with an application like a web browser or ftp client.
On the Mac, you can use UNCs but they must be modified as follows.
    In Terminal:
    smbclient \\\\servername\\sharename\\filename -U username
And enter a password if prompted.
Notice that you must double up the slashes. This is due to how UNIX shells treat the backslash.
You will connect to the share, but it will only be in Terminal.

  • Sharing a printer between mac and pc

I an trying to help my sister share her printer with both her new iMac running Snow Leopard and her old PC running XP. The PC is connected directly to an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) because it has no wifi and her iMac is connected using the wifi. The printer is connected directly to the iMac with a USB cable. I have printer sharing turned on under system preferences on the Mac but I don't know how to find it once I get on the PC.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance

Make sure that the Mac and the PC are both members of the same Workgroup or they won't see each other.

  • How do I share wifi data between iMac and windows based computer on wifi network?

I have an unsecured wifi network at home and need to easily share photos between computers>  I have an iMac and a couple window based computer> Is ther an easy way instead of using a thumb drive?

Since photos are typically large files it will probably be quicker with the thumb drive. The other way is to set up sharing where the files are located and directing the other computers to look there.

  • Need help sharing internet connection between pc and mac using airport

    Hello
I have a PC with an internal modem that connects to the internet via 3g+. it's got wi-fi as my macbook.
i want to share the internet connection of the pc via wifi (using what is called an "ad hoc" connection ( a pc to pc network)) so that the mac can connect to the pc (via wifi) and use its internet connection.
i've already tried a bunch of things but they don't work, can someone help me or tell me where i can find a GOOD guide to do this? (i've already looked around but i haven't found anything that works)
    thanks

Hi. I'm not sure if this helps, but I just found a nice way to do it the other ways around (share the internet from your mac with your pc).
    See: http://echeng.com/journal/2009/07/06/encrypted-internet-sharing-between-mac-os-a nd-windows-xp/
Specifically, step 4 and 6 are crucial!:
    1. In Mac OS X, enable Internet Sharing to computers using Airport
    2. In AirPort Options, select 128-bit WEP encryption and enter a 13-character password
    3. In Windows, add a new wireless network
    4. Enter the SSID and select WEP encryption with Shared Network Authentication (not Open)
    5. Uncheck “The key is provided automatically” and enter the 13-character password
    6. In the Authentication tab, be sure that “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication” is unchecked
The main idea is that MAC-WEP and PC-WEP are not quite the same, so this tweak makes them line up. Perhaps you can do it the other way around from PC to MAC by sort of reversing the idea?
    Hope that helps you!

  • My home sharing continually fails between mac and apple tv 2.

my home sharing continually fails between mac and apple tv 2, even during watching a movie.  I go to the mac to re-turn on home sharing but it is still on.  Any tips?  I also have to turn off and back on at the mac every time i switch on my apple tv.

Sharing Stopped working again over night.
I went to Apple Support Artical TS2972
As soon as I did this Home Sharing started working
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
    Firewall Section
    5. Check Firewall Settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu > System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    Block all incoming connections
    Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
It made sense to me, but its still puzzling me after restarting a router would (in my first attempt) resolve the issue for a day.  This this time I applied the port forwarding TCP and UDP ports and saved the settings in the DLink DIR-655 and both my iPad2 and iPhone 3GS were now again finding the share. My ATV2 is also now accepting the Share.
Tommorrow will be the true test.

  • Syncing between mac and windows

I have an issue where I have created files in Adobe Draw (and previously in Ideas) which I have then saved to the Creative Cloud. I open these files in Illustrator on my Mac, save them back to the cloud then open them on a Windows PC. When I save these files on the PC, I get the Unable to Sync Files error message. I have gone through these solutions Error: "Unable to sync files" but no solution applies. If I create a file on my PC, it syncs fine. Is there a known issue when sharing files between Mac and Windows? I can save the files to Dropbox or email them and I don't have this issue. Thanks

    Hello,
Would you be able to send me your log files so I can better see what might be causing this issue issue. I will need Logs from both your Mac and Windows machines please.
You can find your log files at...
    Mac:
    /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CoreSync
    Windows:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CoreSync
'Library' on Mac and 'AppData' on Windows are both hidden folders. Please read these pages for help on showing these folders:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/access-hidden-user-library-files.html (Mac)
please upload them to Creative Cloud and send me a link to the logs at [email protected]

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • Help: symbol shifting between mac and windows, flash cs3

I'm doing work reviewing flash files created by other users
on mac and windows. I'm using os x 10.5.6. When I open a file
created in windows / flash cs3 some symbols on the stage will have
shifted upwards on the y axis. If I correct the shift and then send
it back to the windows user they see the symbols incorrectly
aligned, as if I had moved symbols around on a correctly aligned
    file.
The strange thing is not everything on the stage is shifted.
Only particular symbols will move, and it's usually symbols only
(not text frames, drawing objects, etc).
I believe there's a general history of bad behavior when
saving flash files and trading them back and forth between mac and
windows, but does anyone know what may be causing this? Or a
    remedy?
    Thank you in advance.
    Peter

also, I tried opening the same files in vista using a mac
mini with vista installed on a bootcamp partition. When opening
other windows authored flash files there I had shifting issues as
well, so I'm not convinced it's strictly a mac vs. windows issue.
Unless it's a flash cs3 on windows xp doesn't like mac flash cs3
    and vista flash cs3...
