Sharing a printer through MacPro to a Macbook Laptop?

How do I share my local printer through my MacPro to my MacBook? It is connected directly to my 2009 MacPro through an Ethernet cable and I want to be able to share it wirelessly to my MacBook Laptop, without a separate router. Given the connectivity and sharing abilities between Macs I am sure there is a way, but cannot figure it out or find the answer for the life of me.
Is this possible? If so, how would I go about setting it up?

You will need some sort of wireless router in order for this to work properly. However, you can try the following:
1. Turn on Printer Sharing in Sharing preferences on the MP.
2. Turn on your MP's wireless card (if you don't have one this won't work.)
3. Be sure you have the same printer driver installed on both computers.
4. Open Print & Fax on the MB and click the [+] button to add a printer.
5. When the Printer Setup Utility window opens you should see the printer listed in the Bonjour window (be sure to click on the Default icon in the toolbar.) It should appear as a "shared" printer.
6. Click on the printer then wait to see if the printer driver is "discovered" automatically. If not then locate the driver in the Print Using drop down menu and select it. Click on the Add button.
7. Test.
If this doesn't work (and it might not) then you will need to try turning on Internet Sharing in the MP's Sharing preferences. Share the Ethernet port to the Airport port (Airport card must be turned on.)
If this still doesn't work then you need to get yourself a wired/wireless router for your local network. If you already have one then connect the printer to one of the Ethernet ports on the router. This is by far the best way to do it.

  • Sharing a Printer Through Network

I have a PC and a MacBook which share the same internet connection. I'd like to be able to share the printer through the network and share files if I can.
Is there any way of being able to?

You sure can do that. In fact, I have 2 Macs and 3 PCs doing just that. I followed iFelix's excellent instructions found HERE to get it all up and running.

  • Sharing Data & Printer Through Airport Extreem

My daughter is home for the summer and we are trying to get her MacBook working with the other computer in the house.
WIFI -- no problem. She is set up and going
Printer -- Half way there! We have a HP LaserJet P2015d printer plugged into the airport base.
I just tried to install that printer on her machine and we can print one sided but I can't seem to set up the duplex printing option. When I go to print / layout the two sided info is there but it is grey and I can't change. I wonder if I picked the wrong option when the machine wanted me to install the printer. When I opened the print browser in the System Preferences Print and Fax it offered me three versions of the HP P2015 -- one with a "Bonjour" connection and the other two with "Shared Printer" connection. I chose one of the latter. ...?
Data Sharing -- no idea. How do I set it up so we can share files between computers? My son has a PowerBook he set up where there is an icon in the dock that when you click the Finder shows my iMac's desktop as well as all his stuff. Of course I didn't pay any attention when they set that up and he isn't around right now to ask. (Somehow I did install the printer on that laptop and it can print duplex or one-sided. Again, damned if I can remember how I did that!)
We are all running OS X 10.4.11
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Simple start: Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "printer sharing" and "file sharing" for numerous help articles on how to set up each.
If your printer is connected to an AEBS as you imply, then open Airport Utility, click on the Manual Setup button. Then click on the Printer icon in the toolbar. See that your printer is identified properly and turn on Print Sharing. Click on the Update button and wait for the AEBS to recycle.
Be sure you have installed the most recent printer driver. Either check HP's site for possible updated drivers or use the driver included with OS X, if any.

  • Problem with OS X.5 Leopard and printing through Airport USB printer

I have just upgraded to Leopard from Tiger and now I can't print. Previously, all 3 of my computers could print to my Samsung printer that is connected to the USB port of the Airport Extreme base station. They could see the Samsung printer through Bonjour and it worked great. Now my computers running Leopard can't see the printer on the wireless network. I've downloaded the latest driver from Samsung and that didn't help. When I connect the printer directly to my Mac tower it prints fine. However I don't want to have the tower on all the time, sharing the printer through the network. It seems to be an issue with Leopard + Bonjour + Airport base station.
    Details:
I have a G5 Tower connected via ethernet to the Airport router.
I also have an intel Mac Mini and a G4 Powerbook 1.67 connected to the Airport through wireless.
The Samsung laser printer is connected to the USB port on the Airport base station.

I too have been bit by the Leopard/wireless printing bug....
Originally, we had two older iMacs running Tiger; both printing to a Lexmark X502n wirelessly via an Airport Express. The set up worked flawlessly for approx. 15 months. A couple of weeks ago, I upgraded to a new (beautiful!) 24" iMac running Leopard. I can print one document, and then like the other posters, the printer shows it's printing, but the printer goes to pause and says it can not connect with host. The Express is on green light, and all the settings are there in the Airport Utility. If I go through the process to "discover" in the Airport Utility, I can then print another page.
But - once the new iMac goes into "printer pause" and needs to be reset, the other older iMac can no longer print. If I reset everything on the new iMac, the other iMac can print as usual - until I print from the new iMac. Lexmark still has no drivers available for this model and Leopard. Past postings on various boards projected they would be available by mid-2008. Obviously, that has not happened. I have contacted Lexmark and they tell me they don't know when drivers will be available. I spent most the day yesterday on the phone with 3 different people at Apple Care. No help other than to say I need the new drivers.
I'd move the laser printer over by my computer and connect via USB, but it is also our fax machine and on a dedicated line. Since we only have the one jack for the second phone line, moving the printer is not an option.
Any help appreciated! I'm ready to go out and buy new cartridges for my old trusty HP inkjet....
The new iMac is connected to a D-Link WBR-2310.
The airport express is connected to the Lexmark X502n via USB.
The wireless network is not secured.

  • Printing through a shared Epson R200

    Hi,
I have just bought my first Mac, a macbook and i'm having a few problems with it printing on my Epson R200. The R200 is shared through one of my XP machines, the macbook can recognise it and print through it, but any advanced features such as print quality, borderless, CD Printing etc are not showing up.
When I added the printer, I selected the R200 model and it's using the GIMP drivers?
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks
    Dan

You have encountered a difference between Windows and OS X. On OS X, there are two printer driver APIs (application programming interface = all the programming tools and info needed for programming) that can be used for drivers - the Carbon one (which is also used by Cocoa if you wanted to use Cocoa for a driver) and the CUPS one (CUPS is the open source spool control system Apple uses in OS X). Brother is the only manufacturer so far to write CUPS drivers for its non-postscript printers. Everyone else uses Carbon, and with Carbon the manufacturer gets to insert exactly which comm protocol will/can be used by the driver.
Short version - the Epson-provided driver for the R200 is only capable of direct USB connection. CUPS drivers can use any comm protocol available to the CUPS system (including Windows Printing). That's why you're using the Gimp-Print (CUPS) driver.

  • MacBook printing through pc

I just got my MacBook and I want to print through a shared printer on my pc. I use Vista on my pc and have all security turned off and the printer is shared. But on my MacBook I don't even see the pc or the printer. Can this be done? Im running wireless on the MacBook also. At some point I will probably dump my pc but I like having both, Im loving the mac though.

Click the Support tab at the top of this page and do a search. I searched "share a printer from my pc" and came up with way too many hits to try listing them here. There was one that stuck out but if it doesn't solve your problem you'll have to search the others. But....look here:

  • Printing from MacBook to a shared Windows printer

I am having a great deal of dificulty setting up my MacBook to print to my shared windows printer. I have tried doing some reasearch on the web and have found a number of difierent atricles and I still could not get it to work.
I have also called apple support and they "can't" help because they think it's not an Apple issue. I'm not convinced.
I am running 10.4.6 and Windows XP, and my printer is a Brother HL 1430.
When I try to create a new printer on my MackBook, I click on the "More Printers" button and I select Windows Printing, Workgroup and I see the windows computer. I click on the windows machine and click Choose.
So far so good. I get a password authentication dialog box asking me to connect to the PC. I type in my account details and it is at this point that it fails.
I cannot seem to connect to the PC via this method. I am using the correct username and password - I have tried repeatedly, and I also tried setting up another account and that too failed. Both accounts were admin accounts.
When I try the username / password, I get an error informing me it cannot connect to the server with the provided username / password.
However, I do have file conectivity to the PC and I can access it's harddrive.
The strange thing is - I tried using no account name / password and it passed the authentication and I was able to see my shared printer. I set it up and it failed to print. I have since deleted this setting and I cannot replicate it. I dont understand why it rejects my account details and why it accepted blank account information, and why it no longer accepts the blank details.
I think something weired is going on here and Apple were unable to help.
I have tried using the Advanced settings via SAMBA - however, this too fails.
I am out of ideas and this is really bugging me - I have wasted over 3 hours and I still cannot print.
    Can someone please help!!
    Thanks.

Is your 'Brother' brand printer, compatible for BOTH Mac and PC? if so, it should/may have come with driver/installation software for both, (on opening the file, are thier/appear to be 2 set's of driver/instruction files).
If not, I would contact Brother at tech support, and ask if they have new/updated drivers, so the model will work on both PC's and Mac's. I'm running a 3rd party peripheral, that came with the above, i.e, 1 CD/driver installation file, 1 set is for Windows, 1 set for Mac, I installed it on both, and it's flawless.
The exception, I had to download new drivers for this to work w/ Win..ws XP with Service Pack 2, (it came with Mac drivers, and PC, but only for Win..ws XP, not Win..ws XP w/ Service Pack 2, hope this helps, and will watcgh for repost. GS

  • Cannot find shared windows printer with NEW macbook running leopard HELP!

I just bought a new Macbook this past week. Woo Hoo. I love everything about it with the exception of file sharing and printer sharing. I have a less than one year old pc running vista that is connected to a hp 1300 series all in one printer. I can not even find this printer anywhere on the mac. i have been able to connect to my pc server via the ip address and share files this way. I am at a loss and really have no knowledge of mac. it is really disheartening, as I had way less trouble setting up windows networks for my roommates in college.
Also, as a side helper, how can I setup a shared folder that can be accessed from both the mac and the pc. I would like something that I can set on the desktop of both in order to share files better and more efficiently than connecting to a server everytime I want to do this. Please help, and explain as if I am as stupid as I appear.
    Thanks.

  • My iMac (OS 10.7.4) has suddenly stopped printing to my Epson CX4800 printer through Airport Extreme, although it will print if connected via USB. Meanwhile, my MacBook (OS 10.5.8) prints still prints wirelessly. Please help.

May iMac (OS 10.7.4) has suddenly stopped printing to my Epson CX4800 printer through Airport Extreme, though my MacBook (OS 10.5.8) continues to function just fine). The iMac will print if it is connected to the printer directly via USB. The iMac continues to connect to the Internet wirelessly. • Trying to connect to a printer through a windows shared printer

I have two printers connected to a Windows machine. On that machine I have shared both printers. A Brother and a color HP 3600N. When i go into print setting and try to set them up I can see both.
I connected to the Brother Printer and it is working fine.
I tried to connect to the HP 3600N but the print driver was not available for that machine. I went to HPs web site and downloaded the driver and did the install. I rebooted and tried again. Still the HP 3600N driver was not showing up.
I tried using two other print drivers the 3500 and the 3700. With both I was able to "connect" to the printer, but the printer only printed garbage.
In order to make sure the printer was working with the Mac. I disconnected it from the PC and directly connected it to the Mac. It found it immediately and the 3600N driver appeared...the printer worked fine.
I then disconnected it from the mac and reconnected it to the PC...rebooted etc.
Then i tried to find the printer again. Once again that print driver 3600n was not available.
How can I over come this. I need to have both printers connecting to the PC for now
    Thanks
    Mark

Look at the printer sharing instructions on the invaluable iFelix Tech Notes site.
If problems persist, check System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall -> Advanced and if necessary clear/uncheck the options to block UDP traffic and enable stealth mode; as long as you're behind a NAT router, those options aren't essential. Windows does seem to put out a slew of UDP traffic, and I've found that blocking UDP/enabling stealth mode block my home eMac from seeing the Windows machine to which a shared HP printer is connected.

  • Printing to shared windows printer over wireless network

    Hi,
I just bought my wife a MacBook and recently updated it to Leopard (OS X 10.5). I have a Lexmark X5150 printer connected to a desktop PC running Windows XP. I can share files between the two computers no problem either wirelessly or through an ethernet connection through my router. But, I'm having troubles accessing the shared printer through the Macbook wirelessly. If I connect the printer directly to the Macbook, I can add the printer with appropriate drivers no problem. However, when I try to add the printer as Windows shared printer, the appropriate driver doesn't show up in the drop down list. I can navigate to and find the printer over the network fine, but I just can't find the right driver. I'm a newbie to Mac and was wondering if there is anyway to find the driver using Finder or something similar to determine where it physially resides on the Mac. I know it's there because it is automatically selected when I directly connect the printer to the Macbook and add the printer. Any thoughts??

Couldn't figure things out, so I'll just stick with connecting the printer directly to the macbook.

  • XP Printing Through Time Capsule

I have a 1T Time Capsule, MacBook Pro and a XP Machine. I have a printer connected to the TC via a USB cable so i can print wirelessly and hard wired. I can print from my MacBook (wireless, wired) with out any problems. If I connect the XP machine directly to the printer bypassing the TC I can print but I can't print from the XP machine through the TC. The print fails at the "checking printer status" dialog.
All my drivers are up up to date. I tried rolling back the XP machine to a time when i knew that it worked. I have also tried reinstalling all related software (bonjour, print drivers).
Strangely, I have been able to print from XP using Bonjour without problems until about 3 days ago.
    Thanks in advance

Had a similar issue. We have two Macs sharing a Canon through an Airport Extreme. I had just updated a bunch of Mac software and somehow doing so caused the printer sharing checkbox to become unchecked in Sys Pref/Sharing. I checked it and all was working again.

  • Trying to print through Linksys router

    Hey there,
I'm trying to get a co-worker's Macbook to print through the Linksys router we have set up in the office, but it's proving to be more difficult than I imagined.
I've located the printer through System Preferences, and strangely enough she DOES have Internet access (browser, mail, etc), however printing doesn't want to work for some reason.
Has anyone had experience networking Macs with Linksys routers? And if so, how can we get the Macbook to print through it?
    Any advice is very appreciated.

hey, i did have the same problem for a while, i had a linksys router setup through a print server. if your printing through a print server, make sure that it has a static IP address and then just put in the information in the printers folder.
if your not using a print server, try enabling windows sharing, printer sharing and personal file sharing in system preferences > sharing folder.
