Sharing a Printer Through Network

I have a PC and a MacBook which share the same internet connection. I'd like to be able to share the printer through the network and share files if I can.
Is there any way of being able to?

You sure can do that. In fact, I have 2 Macs and 3 PCs doing just that. I followed iFelix's excellent instructions found HERE to get it all up and running.

  • Sharing a printer through MacPro to a Macbook Laptop?

How do I share my local printer through my MacPro to my MacBook? It is connected directly to my 2009 MacPro through an Ethernet cable and I want to be able to share it wirelessly to my MacBook Laptop, without a separate router. Given the connectivity and sharing abilities between Macs I am sure there is a way, but cannot figure it out or find the answer for the life of me.
Is this possible? If so, how would I go about setting it up?

You will need some sort of wireless router in order for this to work properly. However, you can try the following:
    1. Turn on Printer Sharing in Sharing preferences on the MP.
    2. Turn on your MP's wireless card (if you don't have one this won't work.)
    3. Be sure you have the same printer driver installed on both computers.
    4. Open Print & Fax on the MB and click the [+] button to add a printer.
    5. When the Printer Setup Utility window opens you should see the printer listed in the Bonjour window (be sure to click on the Default icon in the toolbar.) It should appear as a "shared" printer.
    6. Click on the printer then wait to see if the printer driver is "discovered" automatically. If not then locate the driver in the Print Using drop down menu and select it. Click on the Add button.
    7. Test.
If this doesn't work (and it might not) then you will need to try turning on Internet Sharing in the MP's Sharing preferences. Share the Ethernet port to the Airport port (Airport card must be turned on.)
If this still doesn't work then you need to get yourself a wired/wireless router for your local network. If you already have one then connect the printer to one of the Ethernet ports on the router. This is by far the best way to do it.

  • Unable to printer through network

Hi, I am currently unable to print through the wireless network.  I set up the printer yesterday, and it printed ok. The printer is a HP Office Jet Pro Preium . When I try to print I get the message "Unable to communicate with printer.  Printer unavailable or not connected".  The printer says that it is properly connected to the network.  Any ideas?

Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I see that you are having trouble installing your HP Photosmart c4580 printer on Mac OS X 10.5.8. And, I am happy to help! I would recommend to try uninstalling the software again, (in case their is still some software partially installed.) Uninstall the Printer Software. And, then try resetting the print system, and verifying and then reinstall the software using this direct link.  Hope this helps!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”

    Hi,
Looks like the printer is not on the network or the ip address may have changed
Please download and run the HP print scan doctor, it will identify and fix the issue...
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=Im-120773-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...
or you may have to reconfigure the printer back to the network and install the printer drivers back on the computer...

  • Printing through network

I am trying to print through the time capsule's USB port, with an Epson Stylus CX4400 series printer. It works to print on my Tiger Macbook, but not my Leopard Macbook. When I add a printer, both computers recognize that it exists. When I print, the print queue pops up, but contains nothing on the Leopard Macbook. The document appears and starts printing on the Tiger Macbook. In Airport utility, the time capsule recognizes that the printer is attached. I have no trouble printing directly through USB. I even tried resetting the printing system, but that had no effect. I am running the most recent Leopard software, and have the latest firmware on the time capsule. I can't think of anything else to do. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a similar problem. Hooked up to TC this week-end; internet to imac and macbook no problem, backups no problem. The problem I ran into was printing; the imac printed no problem, the macbook could connect to the printer but it just produced blank copies. I tried different drivers but no luck. I ended up plugging the printer back to the imac and sharing the printer with the macbook that way. I'm wondering if I plugged the printer directly into the macbook and allowed it to set-up to print that way then hooked it back up to the TC if that would fix it. I'm probably not going to try because I'm content but maybe that would work.

  • Sharing Data & Printer Through Airport Extreem

My daughter is home for the summer and we are trying to get her MacBook working with the other computer in the house.
WIFI -- no problem. She is set up and going
Printer -- Half way there! We have a HP LaserJet P2015d printer plugged into the airport base.
I just tried to install that printer on her machine and we can print one sided but I can't seem to set up the duplex printing option. When I go to print / layout the two sided info is there but it is grey and I can't change. I wonder if I picked the wrong option when the machine wanted me to install the printer. When I opened the print browser in the System Preferences Print and Fax it offered me three versions of the HP P2015 -- one with a "Bonjour" connection and the other two with "Shared Printer" connection. I chose one of the latter. ...?
Data Sharing -- no idea. How do I set it up so we can share files between computers? My son has a PowerBook he set up where there is an icon in the dock that when you click the Finder shows my iMac's desktop as well as all his stuff. Of course I didn't pay any attention when they set that up and he isn't around right now to ask. (Somehow I did install the printer on that laptop and it can print duplex or one-sided. Again, damned if I can remember how I did that!)
We are all running OS X 10.4.11
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Simple start: Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "printer sharing" and "file sharing" for numerous help articles on how to set up each.
If your printer is connected to an AEBS as you imply, then open Airport Utility, click on the Manual Setup button. Then click on the Printer icon in the toolbar. See that your printer is identified properly and turn on Print Sharing. Click on the Update button and wait for the AEBS to recycle.
Be sure you have installed the most recent printer driver. Either check HP's site for possible updated drivers or use the driver included with OS X, if any.

  • Cannot print through network

I have a laserjet 3800n connected via ethernet to an ASUS router. I have a macbook pro retina with OSX 10.9
The mac will recognize the printer and will allow me to setup a print queue but the document will never actually print. The HP utility will also recognize the printer as well. The printer queue simply says "printer is not responding" and will sit there indefinitely. I've looked everywhere and can't figure out what's going on. Please help

  • Problem with OS X.5 Leopard and printing through Airport USB printer

I have just upgraded to Leopard from Tiger and now I can't print. Previously, all 3 of my computers could print to my Samsung printer that is connected to the USB port of the Airport Extreme base station. They could see the Samsung printer through Bonjour and it worked great. Now my computers running Leopard can't see the printer on the wireless network. I've downloaded the latest driver from Samsung and that didn't help. When I connect the printer directly to my Mac tower it prints fine. However I don't want to have the tower on all the time, sharing the printer through the network. It seems to be an issue with Leopard + Bonjour + Airport base station.
    Details:
I have a G5 Tower connected via ethernet to the Airport router.
I also have an intel Mac Mini and a G4 Powerbook 1.67 connected to the Airport through wireless.
The Samsung laser printer is connected to the USB port on the Airport base station.

I too have been bit by the Leopard/wireless printing bug....
Originally, we had two older iMacs running Tiger; both printing to a Lexmark X502n wirelessly via an Airport Express. The set up worked flawlessly for approx. 15 months. A couple of weeks ago, I upgraded to a new (beautiful!) 24" iMac running Leopard. I can print one document, and then like the other posters, the printer shows it's printing, but the printer goes to pause and says it can not connect with host. The Express is on green light, and all the settings are there in the Airport Utility. If I go through the process to "discover" in the Airport Utility, I can then print another page.
But - once the new iMac goes into "printer pause" and needs to be reset, the other older iMac can no longer print. If I reset everything on the new iMac, the other iMac can print as usual - until I print from the new iMac. Lexmark still has no drivers available for this model and Leopard. Past postings on various boards projected they would be available by mid-2008. Obviously, that has not happened. I have contacted Lexmark and they tell me they don't know when drivers will be available. I spent most the day yesterday on the phone with 3 different people at Apple Care. No help other than to say I need the new drivers.
I'd move the laser printer over by my computer and connect via USB, but it is also our fax machine and on a dedicated line. Since we only have the one jack for the second phone line, moving the printer is not an option.
Any help appreciated! I'm ready to go out and buy new cartridges for my old trusty HP inkjet....
The new iMac is connected to a D-Link WBR-2310.
The airport express is connected to the Lexmark X502n via USB.
The wireless network is not secured.

  • Require Password for Printing to Networked Printer?

    Hi All,
I have a HP Color LaserJet 3600n on my network of 4 Airport Extreme Gigabit Routers. It is both connected by USB to the router AND CAT6 Ethernet to the router for a direct network connection. I have 5 computers on the network and i would like to password protect the printing to this printer. We also have an HP LaserJet 4100 connected by USB only. That is the regular printer that everyone should print to but if they need color they need to request permission. Is there a way to be asked for a password every time they want to print to the color? It doesn't matter if it is printing through network IP or Bonjour USB.
    Thanks
    - Harris

It may be possible. On your computer's browser enter the following URL: http://localhost:631/. This should open the CUPS administration page. There is a set of tabs near the top of the page. Click on the tab labeled Administration. You should now see a list of options you can check. You should see one labeled "Use Kerberos authentication (FAQ). Click on the FAQ link which will open a help page on configuring and using Kerberos authentication with CUPS. From here you are on your own because I know nothing about this nor if it will provide the type of password control for which you are looking.

  • Printing to shared windows printer over wireless network

    Hi,
I just bought my wife a MacBook and recently updated it to Leopard (OS X 10.5). I have a Lexmark X5150 printer connected to a desktop PC running Windows XP. I can share files between the two computers no problem either wirelessly or through an ethernet connection through my router. But, I'm having troubles accessing the shared printer through the Macbook wirelessly. If I connect the printer directly to the Macbook, I can add the printer with appropriate drivers no problem. However, when I try to add the printer as Windows shared printer, the appropriate driver doesn't show up in the drop down list. I can navigate to and find the printer over the network fine, but I just can't find the right driver. I'm a newbie to Mac and was wondering if there is anyway to find the driver using Finder or something similar to determine where it physially resides on the Mac. I know it's there because it is automatically selected when I directly connect the printer to the Macbook and add the printer. Any thoughts??

Couldn't figure things out, so I'll just stick with connecting the printer directly to the macbook.

  • Printing through the network

I have heard the I can print through my wireless network. Just where do I have to go and what do I have to do to get that going ? I want to be able to print to a printer upstairs from a pc downstairs. The pecee recieves a signal from my wreless router by my macpro.
    thanks

This whole thing began when I asked the tech at school if he had ever used a bluetooth printer. He reponded by saying, "Why would I ? I can just print through the network," I had been thinking of getting a bluetooth printer so my partner could print from downstairs, The printer upstairs prints through the usb cable from the mac pro. No ethernet connection no blutooth on this printer. So this is what leads me to the question.
So it's the printer sharing I need to look at in system preferences ! Thanks. It's got to be possible to go cross platform. I print from both pc and mac to a printer in the room next to mine at school. I've never done anything but add printer from an available printer list which is identifiedby room number or entering the ip address for the printer. I've not needed to do anything about sharing printer in settings. Would this mean the mac pro which it's connected to needs to be on to print from the pcee downstairs or just that the network be active ?
    Thanks

  • Security settings for print and file sharing on a wireless network.

I would like to gather some security information on file and print sharing on my wireless network before I set it up . What steps do I need to take to make it secure? Is it better to just buy a wirelss print server?
    Thanks

You can secure the wireless network, set a password on the shared resources or both.
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • FAX through HP laser jet 3050 which is connected on a Windows Network. I m also connected to this Network and i print through HP LJ 3050. How can i sent fax through HP LJ 3050?

HOW can i sent FAX through HP laser jet 3050 which is connected on a Windows Network.
I m also connected to this Network and i print through HP LJ 3050. How can i sent fax through HP LJ 3050?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Apparently there is no HP software support for the HP 3050 fax or scan functions with OS X 'Lion' 10.7:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02950970 #A1
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?&objectID=c0292511 4
    Alternatives?
    1) Run a Windows client on the Mac using Boot Camp or one of the available virtualization programs like Parallels, VMware Fusion, and others so you can run the latest Windows print/fax/scan driver.
    2) If your Mac hardware supports an older OS X version, downgrade to one (Snow Leopard?) that still had support for print, fax and scan.
    3) Buy a newer printer. A 2007 model is 5+ years old, and should now be fully depreciated in a business.
