Sharing a slideshow experience

This is not a question. I learned something that I think might help others, while I was trying to make a slideshow playable on a DVD player connected to a television, with decent picture quality and features that I wanted.
I wanted to easily be able to have title screens and captions and full control of the music. The ProCare person gave me a good method that may not be obvious to other Mac iLife newbies like myself.
Use iPhoto to create the slideshow and do your Ken Burns settings, transitions, duration, etc. It is very important to go into the slideshow settings and set the display quality. Choose iDVD 4x3 or 16x9, as you wish, to have more pixels per picture than the “current display” setting. You need to set this for every slideshow that you create. Share the slideshow to iDVD to create a “.mov” file of the slideshow. Import the “.mov” file into iMovie. Once in iMovie, it is easy to add captions (as subtitles), title screens, and one or more pieces of music with volume control. You could even record a narrative track. With a large slideshow, it is easier to group the photos into several small slideshows. When finished editing in iMovie, share the movie into iDVD. From iDVD, then burn the DVD.
This works well for me, but be aware of a bug I discovered after first being shown this technique. When I returned home, I tried it myself and was shocked to see squished images in iMovie (bad aspect ratio). It took a lot of trial and error exporting and importing to discover, with help from the ProCare guys (it took several people), that when the iPhoto slideshow did not have the music option checked, the iMovie import would squish the images. Checking the music option in iPhoto is the only way to have iMovie import with the correct aspect ratio. Once in iMovie, you can remove the audio track on the slideshow video, and add the music you want on the other audio tracks.

Rohit,
Its a good idea to run some basic queries (v$datafile, v$lofile, v$tempfile) in database to confirm where are all datafiles on filesystem. Its very risk affair when you are relocating a file specially in unix. DOn't you have tape backups happening every other night? Its good idea to have tape back done every other night for this kind of issues.
Well thanks for sharing your experience and something to learn,

  • Sharing iphoto slideshows to idvd

recently reinstalled ilife (iphoto suddenly disappeared!)
when sharing a slideshow created on iphoto to idvd, it transfers as a quicktime movie (do not want it to be a quicktime movie) is there a setting i can change?

If you want to have a slideshow in iDVD with only the still photos from iPhoto then select just the album of photos and use the Share->Send to iDVD menu. This will open iDVD, create a slideshow in it and import the album of photos from iPhoto. j
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Sharing iPhoto slideshow using iDVD

After spending a painstaking amount of time, getting everything just perfect in my iPhoto slideshow, then using Sharing to export to iDVD, my sound and slideshow no longer line up.The slideshow now ends and the song gets cut off. I have even tried adding extra time to my slideshow and make other adjustments, but having to export takes time and I need it to end up the way I made it. This is only a 57 image, one song (4:08 min), slideshow. It goes off without a hitch in iPhoto. I have adjusted every frame for effects (no prepackaged iPhoto stuff) and duration. Any help here would be appreciated.

Have not tried to do that.
In iPhoto 6 there is a thing called Photocast. That might work. I don't use iPhoto, so I'm not much help there. You should visit the iPhoto 6 group.
but I can not create a successful DVD to distribute to famiy members. What am I doing wrong?
Apparently you are doing something wrong. I do that all the time.

  • Problem sharing iPhoto slideshow to iDVD

    Hi,
I'm using iPhoto 11 and have made a themed slideshow with music. There seems to be changes in the theme being made when I "share" it to iDVD 7.1.2. Minor stuff but really annoying. Things like the a page of photos changing from the theme of vintage paper to black surrounds, and putting in a fake postcard image.
I have previously done the same slideshow to iDVD (minus about 5 photos) and it worked brilliantly.
I've closed down iPhoto, restarted the computer and "shared" it to iDVD about 5 times and the same thing happens.
This is for my mother's funeral in a couple of days and I want it to be perfect.
Does anyone have an idea of what the problem is or a workaround?
    thanks
    Carol

Try exporting the movie to the Desktop at the large size
and check the slideshow to see if it keeps the correct theme.  If it does you then open iDVD, select a theme and add the movie to the menu being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Photo sharing and slideshow

In February I am putting together a giant national meeting with about 20 people being flown in from all over the place. One of the learning and development activities that I am putting together is a scavenger hunt/photo challenge situation. Basically each time they complete a challenge, they have to take a photo. They are in groups of 4 and I am expecting that at least one person in each group will have an iphone.
My thoughts are that one member of the group take the pictures on their phone. When the scavenger hunt ends, we will all be having dinner at our bosses house around the corner. My boss wants there to be a slideshow of all the pictures taken during the scavenger hunt. I found out that my boss has a Samsung TV. My question to you is…what is the best way to do this so it is quick and easy? I will have access to an Ipad if necessary. Also, if I wanted to take pictures with an actual camera, how can we integrate those photos as well?
I think I heard something about a shared album on iphones but I think that is only available if we are on wifi and I don’t know if Chateau Ste. Michelle winery will have wifi (that is where the hunt will be).
I can't spend any money on accesories. The process needs to be free. What are your thoughts?

No, you can't link the photos or it's caption on a photo page. They are created by javascript. The transparent shape is your only option which, as you know is fragile at best.
I would take the time to add the photos to a regular page, size them using the Inspector/Metrics pane to the same size and link them. You'll have a much more stable and cross platform compatible page that way.

  • Sharing iPhoto slideshows on Facebook

When creating and sharing an iPhoto slideshow, the file included the default audio clip provided by iPhoto. Is it okay to share this file with the default audio clip or are the audio clips in iPhoto copyright restricted? Where in iPhoto can I find this level of detail? Thanks.

Those sound files are licenced for Personal Use. But it doesn’t matter. Your problem is convincing FaceBook that this is the case, because they consider FB to be broadcasting. So good luck with that.

  • Audio problems sharing iphoto slideshow with iDVD

I have created a slideshow of 200 photos and 4 random tracks from itunes.
It plays fine in iphoto. When I share it with iDVD and a .mov file is created only the first Track of audio plays both in preview and from a disk image. The rest is silence. The slideshow is set to match the display time to the total audio and this remains the same. I've tried removing the encoding and the itunes helper plist. Any other thoughts?

If you have Garage Band - make one track with the four songs/tracks and save in iTunes and use that track for iPhoto - just did that and worked great -

  • Sharing a good experience (kinda long)

I just got my new 5G 30GB iPod yesterday -- three or so days after ordering it on the Apple site with the free (which was supposed to take much longer) shipping option. I was shocked it arrived so quickly -- and even a day before FedEx originally estimated.
I had been playing with iTunes on my PC for the several days between ordering and receiving the iPod, and was all ready to sync it up as soon as it arrived (and it even had a full charge out of the box). It sync'd seamlessly and after my 15GB or so of stuff was loaded up, I began playing with it. Totally awesome.
I've had mp3 players before but always disdained the iPod. Then I went and bought my first large-capacity model (doesn't really matter what brand) last month and absolutely could not get it to work with my computer, despite the fact I had a smaller-capacity model of the same brand that still works perfectly.
So I returned it and decided to go the iPod route.
After the first sync, I had lots of problems disconnecting, and even at one point somehow erased all my music and videos and podcasts. I reloaded everything and changed from automatic sync to manual update, and now it works perfectly. I couldn't be happier, and I really don't think I'll miss the automatic sync option. I'm used to manual updates anyway with my old mp3 player.
Just wanted to share. Hope I didn't bore everybody. Happy now to be part of the iPod club.

I was actually glad to read a post that was fairly positive and optimistic about the 5G. I just picked mine up this weekend and am extremely happy with it. I had spent time almost everyday since it's release reading posts and hearing peoples complaints. To be honest it made me very apprehensive. It seems that there were many issues from the start and that apple did in fact rush to fast to get this one into market. My experiance, however, has been flawless. I have seen a couple of minorly quirky things, but 99% of my use has been really enjoyable. I found the screen to be even better than I had expected and the sound quality is awesome. I have ripped dvd's with no problems and all of my music transfered with out a hitch.
My girlfriend has a 20gig 4g and my 5g is a 60. I have found the differance is significant between the two and I could not praise this player more.
Believe me.....I know that reading most of these posts could scare someone away from this new unit....it almost did me....but....I am so glad I went ahead and bought mine...it has exceded my expectations in every way.
(ok...I do still have one apprehension.....I have left the factory plastic on the face until a decent case becomes available. After seeing the units in the store, I have no doubt it will get scratched up. I hope a decent one becomes available soon)

  • Slideshow project shared from iPhoto causes iDVD to crash

I've searched the forum and found a few threads that sounded like they pertained to this issue, but I didn't see much discussion beyond the question or any answers that had confirmations that they solved the problem.
I've created a slideshow project in iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5), and I used the "Send to iDVD" option from the "Share" menu to send it to iDVD '08 (version 7.0.4). The export appears to work, a menu button appears in iDVD, and I'm able to work in iDVD to make changes to the theme, menu text, etc. However, if I try to actually view the slideshow movie in iDVD (either by double clicking on the menu button in the iDVD interface, or by using the "Preview DVD playback" button and then choosing the movie from the DVD menu), iDVD crashes. This is happening consistently. I've gone to my Movies folder and found the exported movie file that iPhoto created. This plays back in QuickTime Player just fine. If I add the movie to my iDVD project manually (as opposed to using the "Send to iDVD" option in iPhoto), it still causes iDVD to crash if I try to preview it.
Out of curiosity I brought a non-iPhoto generated QuickTime movie into iDVD, and it played back with no problem. I checked the compression format. The movie that worked was an Apple Motion JPG A movie file. I tried another non-iPhoto generated QuickTime movie file. This time iDVD crashed again. I noticed that this second non-iPhoto generated movie file said it was using the "Apple MPEG4 Decompressor" which is the same format as the movie file that iPhoto did create. I then tried an Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 QuickTime movie file and that worked just fine. Is that the problem? Apple MPEG-4 Decompressor movie files cause iDVD to crash? Could that really be possible when this is the format that iPhoto uses when exporting? Is there a solution? I don't see a way to select a different compression format when exporting/sharing a slideshow from iPhoto.
I discovered this problem while teaching a class to 12 students who don't know much about doing creative projects on a Mac. There are going to be 12 folks who don't think very much of Apple's computers and/or its software if I don't get this problem solved quickly (last day of class is tomorrow). Everything has been going along swimmingly up until this final step of getting the slideshow into iDVD and then burning it to take home. I'm stunned that this isn't working since I've never run into this problem before, but it's happening consistently with every workstation I've tried here in this lab. All computers are running iLife '08. We're all trying to do the same thing. Slideshow project created in iPhoto, trying to send it to iDVD for burning. I been doing stuff with iPhoto and iDVD for years without problems, so I didn't think I needed to run through an entire process here in this lab before teaching the class. I just expected everything to work like it always does. D'oh!
    Help!

    UPDATE:
In case you're interested.... Just because iDVD crashes when I try to preview my slideshow movie from iPhoto doesn't mean I can't successfully burn my DVD project to disc. I was skeptical, but it works. The burn process went off without a hitch, and the DVD plays back using Mac OS X's built-in DVD Player.
Another workaround is to use the "OneStep DVD from Movie..." option in the iDVD file menu and avoid working inside of iDVD.
Someone suggested that perhaps my trouble was connected to using a legacy theme as opposed to one of the newest 7.0 themes. Any truth to that?
Just because I can burn a DVD successfully doesn't mean I wouldn't still like to fix the crash problem if possible. I'm grateful that I now know that I can work around the crashing problem, but I do think it's something that should be fixed and not just avoided.

  • Question from the Blog: slideshow music

We had the following question come from the Photoshop.com blog that covers the Gallery changes:
Question: "When I try to create a express slideshow it will let me pick out a  template then I can’t add music or get a timeline or anything else for  that matter !! Have talked with your tech. help people & that got  me no where ..."
Answer: Our slideshow engine did change recently, and the ability to add music, as well as the default slideshow experience, changed. In the case of music, it is not available at the moment (but we realize that it's a really nice feature to have. For the time being, you can create excellent slideshows with music and transitions and effects, using either Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements, and share those on ps.com).
The default sharing slideshow also changed, from that 3-D floating model to the new Midnight theme. The primary driver for that change was to drastically improve the loading time for the slideshows, and in fact, the slideshows now load in a fraction of the time, and offer a superior viewing experience with real full screen, as opposed to the previously limited large view available in the former model. But we're adding new themes and templates all the time, and we understand the appeal of a deep, interactive experience for sharing slideshows. Again, in the meantime, until new themes come available directly online, you can choose from a variety of very interactive and fun themes if you share photos and video directly from Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements to Photoshop.com.

  • My iPhone Experience :)

    The Purchase
Tonight, i walked into the Glendale Galleria (in CA) and purchased an 8gig iPhone. I would have bet my first born that they would have been sold out by 8pm or 10pm.
So i gave them a call and the very nice gentlemen who answered told me they had the 8gigs in stock. He could no elaborate if they had plenty, but he told me to come on down. So i did.
Thankfully, there was no line. The store maybe had 20 people browsing and playing with the phone, etc. Maybe because the mall closes at 9 or 10pm, the people started leaving.
So i walked up to the cashier and requested the phone. We made small talk. I was interested in how many people perhaps had visited the store at 6pm. I was told they had a solid line for 4 hrs of people just buying and leaving.
    wow.
I looked behind the register, they had stacks and stacks of the 4 and 8 gig phone just piled high. That amazed me!
So i paid the nice foxy lady and left the store. In and out in less than 7 minutes.
The packaging is quite impressive. It's a small black box in a black bag. It's high end electronic packaging and printing. VERY NICE.
    Unpackaging/Activating/etc.
So i drove home and i started to unpack the iPhone. I wasn't expecting much at this point. I had been reading the east coasters-NYers nightmare stories of 6 hr activations and cancellations and hangups, etc.
So i plugged in the iPhone and launched iTunes. Prior to starting my day, i had upgraded my OS X and iTunes to the latest iPhone compatible versions. I also inserted a USB 2.0 5-port belkin card in my trusty G4 dual 1gig MDD tower.
Once the computer, itunes recognized the iPhone... i simply went step by step following the onscreen instructions. Mind you i'm ALREADY a AT&T (started with Cingular) subscriber.
So it detected my number, my account as a current subscriber and it gave me the option of packages to sign up for, along with the extra SMS text messaging packages.
I made the selections and soon enough the window told me that it may take up to 3 minutes.
I don't even think 1 minute went by when it told me that the iPhone activation was complete. My jaw dropped.
REALLY? Was that it? So the first thing i did was unplug the iPhone and make a call to make sure my number was carried over to the iPhone. Sure enough it was. I could make and receive calls with not problem. Impressive!
I was so eager to try my fast wi-fi connection at home, which worked like a charm!
Then i was really curious about how fast (slow) the AT&T EDGE network is... and to my surprise, it wasn't bad at all. I don't know how fast the pages were loading, but i wasn't even waiting 1 minute to fully load yahoo.com or cnn.com
The webpages loaded just as if they were on a slow DSL connection. I wasn't disappointed. I expected it to be slower actually.
Perhaps AT&T did pump up the bandwidth for the iPhone launch. Either way, it's usable. I can be out there somewhere in LA and it'll work just fine for me.
Google Maps and the other widgets worked great! Those features alone are worth the price of the phone.
My email synced up perfectly (although i had to set the AT&T outgoing mail server to make my POP3 email work correctly (outgoing mail).
I setup the visual voicemail which works like a charm.
The features of this phone are worth every penny. Sure it's pricey, but this phone is useful in many ways.
The design is gorgeous. The way it feels in your hand... you just want to keep holding it all day long.
Oh and that keyboard... okay... it's going to get some getting used to. Not much though. I'm already learning that if you just let the keyboard do it's thing, you'll type quicker!
Overall, i had a great buying experience. I'm happy with this purchase and the service. I know you east coasters may have poor or non-existent AT&T (Cingular) service. I wonder if it's because of the locations of the cell towers or repeaters and the building blocking/absorbing the signals?
Here in LA, we get great coverage. At least my now retired moto razr v3 phone did great for one year. Tomorrow i'm taking my phone out everywhere to compare signal strengths and EDGE coverage, etc.
Overall an awesome experience. Way to go Apple!

    Most excellent!
Cheers for sharing a positive experience. I had a rather enjoyable one myself.
I live in Tucson, AZ. Got to a local AT&T store around 1:30, and waited for hours under an EZ-UP tent the first person in line brought (he was thanked repeatedly by the growing crowd as the day progressed).
The whole time we were there, there were 3 or 4 AT&T representatives that were extremely accommodating, offering coolers of ice cold water bottles, answering all our questions, and just hanging out and enjoying the experience.
Once the doors opened, my experience was nearly identical to yours in that I was in and out and the clerks were all very nice.
Got home, unpacked everything... once again, your first impressions are shared.
Activated nicely, syncs properly, etc. I've been absolutely satisfied with the whole experience so far.
I can make calls but can't receive them yet (my number was ported from Verizon), I'm anxious, though I have nothing but patience in this department. I completely understand that technology has limitations, and a communications device launch of this magnitude that requires hundreds of thousands of people to use the same network doing the exact same thing at the exact same time, is going to have a few glitches.
When I do receive my first call on the iPhone, I plan to pop a bottle of (juuuust acceptable enough) champagne and toast in the name of Apple, AT&T, and myself.
