Sharing a Time Machine Back-up
Is there some way that I can make my Time Machine back-up files from my Mac available to the other (Windows) machines on my network?
My set-up is this. BT Home Hub provides internet access via ethernet connection to Time Capsule. Network comprises a Mac Pro running OSX 10.6 and several PC's running Windows XP; all in the same room so connections are all ethernet. The Mac Pro has all my photos and these are all backed up to the Time Capsule using Time Machine. The PC's can all see the TC hard-drive and can access any files that I copy onto it from the Mac, except the back-up created using Time Machine
The objective is to be able to use any machine to view the photos managed/stored on the Mac and backed-up to the TC. I can apparently do that by creating a copy of the photo library manually onto the TC, but since all the photos are already on the TC in the back-up that seems wasteful. How can the PC's view the back-up?
Thanks
You would need software on the Windows side that can mount and modify sparse disk images. There's not really a supported method of doing this, although a Google search may locate one or two programs that can do this (TransMac is the one I found, I have never heard of or seen this program before today). Use at your own risk, and remember to turn off Time Machine first since you never know what effect it would have if you are using that sparse image in Windows while your Mac is trying to back up to it.
It should also be mentioned that iPhoto does not store the photos in it's database in a format friendly for editing in any other program. If you move, rename, or otherwise modify the contents of that iPhoto library from your PC, then you may make your backup worthless.

Sharing Time Machine Back Up with Desktop and MacBook
Hello,
In preparation for my work on the road I back up my desktop using Time Machine on my Time Capsule, wipe my MacBook clean and Migrate my files to the MacBook so I can take everything. In recent years I notice when syncing my devices, that process has improved and the iPhone,iPad recognises the MacBook as basically the same as my desktop and I don't have to wipe and sync the device. Thank you Apple engineers for that improvement.
This year is a bit different. I have done the migration, but am delayed departing. I would like to share my Time Machine back up across the two computers. Sort of a poor mans macbook sync. I would treat the Macbook as disposable and the Desktop as primary. Make changes to the iMac then update the MacBook before I leave.
Can I use my desktop , back it up to Time Machine, then update the macbook as required? I would do this until I leave.
Also I noticed for the first time the MacBook is running a different OS to the iMac. Will this matter to me?
Thanks,
Ken
Desktop is an iMac 24 running MacOS10.6.8, 2.4 GHz C2D
MacBook is an early 2008 running MacOS 10.6.3, 2.4 GHz C2D
Time Capsule 802.11n, 1st Generation, version 7.6.4
iPhone 3GS iOS 6.1.6
iPad 2 , iOS 7.1.2So, the macbook today, I did get this message from the OS re TimeMachine
"Would you like to reuse the backup "/Volume/....sparsebundle"
The backup was created on a different computer. If you reuse this backup it can no longer be used by the original computer.
I selected Reuse Backup. This is very convenient. I am wondering now.
How do I select back and forth on the computer to reuse the various back ups?

HT201250 how do i add external hard drive to my time machine back up
how do i add external hard drive to my time machine back up so that I may view the files independently on apple tv please?
To elaborate on above. I am looking to add about 300gig of photos on an external hard drive to TC.
Once I do this I believe I can then have itunes source its photos from TC without having them stored directly on my iMac?
Then I am assuming once I keep itunes on with home sharing I can stream these photos through Apple TV?
My inital problem is getting the photos onto TC in an individual folder not just a backup folder....is that possible or what would you suggest please? -

How do I restart Time Machine back-up from scratch?
How do I restart Time Machine back-up from scratch? I have a MacBook Air that was my wife's - now given to my daughter for school. My wife never used Time Machine to back up (she simply copied files to an external drive), so before clearing her files off the Mac HD, I tried using Time Machine for the first time with an external HD. However, the Time Machine back up repeatedly failed after about 2GB of 28GB of files. I manually copied my wife's 28GB of files to another external HD and deleted all the files off the Mac HD. I then reformatted the external Time Machine drive. But when I try to use Time Machine to back up the MacBook Air as it is now with my daughter's files on the Mac HD to the external TM drive, Time Machine acts as if the 28GB of my wife's deleted files are still on the Mac HD and fails back-up after counting to about 2GB, even though there aren't even 2GB of files on the Mac HD now and nothing on the external TM drive. I don't need to save any back-ups of how the MacBook used to be - I just need to start from scratch with how the computer is now. Can anyone please tell me how to get Time Machine to think the MacBook is a brand new computer and act as if it's a first time ever back up? I tried updating to Yosemite, and tried renaming the computer in System Preferences>Sharing, plus (as noted above) deleting all the old files off the Mac HD and reformatting the external Time Machine drive - none of that worked. All I can do at the moment is manually copy my daughter's files to an external HD - very frustrating.
Hmmm.. Office is not hard to restore.
You have something major wrong (Yosemite being the primary one).
Do a verify of the source drive.. to do that you will need to boot to the recovery.. and run the disk utility from there.. it sounds like your main disk is corrupted.
Once that is complete, delete the current setup of TM and try again.. use the widget to find out why it is failing..
See Troubleshooting.
A1, A4 and A5 for further info.
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Good luck with it..
I would also download carbon copy cloner.. it is $40, but you can use it free for a time.. forget if a week or a month??.. to try out.. and make a proper backup before you start.. CCC is far more reliable than TM.. and in fact you might decide to simply forget about TM if it works and pays the $40.. because you can produce a bootable clone on the external drive which is a heck of a lot easier to use than TM. -
I can't access my files on my old Time Machine back up on my newer iMac
Okay, so I’m in a bit of a mess here.
I did have an old Macbook running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which died on me.
Luckily I managed to get a few Time Machine Back Ups before I passed away . These back ups are
saved on a non-Apple external HD.
I recently inherited an iMac ( from 2009) which was also
running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I got very excited and hastily up graded the OS
to Yosemite.
This iMac belonged to a friend, and I did not have the Snow
Leopard disc to perform a factory restore so I decided to simple delete their
account (System Admin account) from the iMac and keep the account they made for
me with the intentions of making that the main account.
After upgrading to Yosemite and deleting the System Admin account and making
myself the main account holder on the iMac I tried to access my files on my
external HD to manually move them onto the new iMac ( such as my photos,
videos, music, logic files, documents etc).
This is where I encountered my problem. I can no longer
access my folders on my external HD. It tells me I do not have permission to do
so, with a little red stop sign on front of all of these folders and files.
Is there any way I can fix this without having to buy a Snow Leopard disc? AND
IF I do perform a factory restore will my files in my HD still be locked?
Thank you in advance.I managed to get a few Time Machine Back Ups before I passed away
I'm not sure whether a ghost can do this, but if you were still alive, you could do as follows.
First make sure you have read & write access to the folder you're trying to restore to. You should be able to see its contents in the Finder, and to move files in and out of it.
This is an exception to the rule that you should never make any changes to backup data. I've tested this procedure in OS X 10.8 only. It should work with later versions, but I don't know whether it works in earlier versions. Use it only for files that were backed up from your home folder, or a folder on another volume created by you, and would normally be writable by you. Do not touch backups of system or application files.
In the Finder (not in the time-travel view), navigate to the backup volume, then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb", and then to the snapshot you want to restore from. The snapshots are folders labeled with the date when they were created. Inside each of those folders is a file hierarchy like the one on the volume that was backed up. Descend through the hierarchy until you come to a folder named "Users," and inside that, a folder with your user name. The procedure will be different if you're trying to restore files on another volume.
Select the folder and open the Info dialog (command-I). Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and authenticate. In the Sharing & Permissions section, give your account Read & Write access. You may have to close the dialog and repeat this step in order for the change to show up. Then click the gear icon and select
Apply to Enclosed Items
from the popup menu.
Try the restore operation again, in the time-travel interface. -
HT201250 How to change Time Machine back up time
Is there a way to change the hourly Time Machine back up time to once or twice a day?
Tidy wrote:
Now I have my original back up on time capsule which time machine can't see and it keeps starting over again to make a new backup - so my time capsule disk shows two separate backups one the original one of 2 days ago named for my computer and a new one almost the same gigabytes (139gb) which it has called Macintosh sparse bundle ????
It's possible the first one is damaged, but that seems unlikely, unless you turned the TC or Mac off while it was trying to do a backup. But even that shouldn't cause TM to start a new one (absent any messages to that effect). And it shouldn't be named "Macintosh" unless you've changed your computer name to that via System Prefs > Sharing.
A clue may be lurking in your logs. Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs. Locate both backups in question, then copy and post all the messages for each one here. (Since the first backup has been a couple of days, the widget may not show the messages for that backup; if not, the pink box shows how to use the Console app to find them.)
With the messages from both backups, we may be able to see what's going on.
I'm thinking that I should just leave time cap ON and see which it backs up to then delete the other one.
Let's see what we can find first.
I assume connecting iMac to time cap via Ethernet cable would not be a problem?
Correct. Doing the first, full backup via Ethernet is recommended.
Also if just turning time machine off is enough to disrupt time capsule backups how about turning the iMac off, which I will have to do once in a while.
Neither should be a problem, unless a backup is in progress and either the TC or Mac is shut down abnormally. -
Time Machine Backing up too much data (fixed, I think)
About a month ago, I upgraded my Mac Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and in so doing hooked up new external drive for TM backups.
First backup was large, bit slow, and expected.
All backups after that were fairly slow, which I took initially to be partially related to doing recent OS upgrade.
Within last week or so, I started to notice that my backups seemed to be much larger than expected. I went down about 350 GB on the backup drive in a matter 2 to 3 weeks, while adding at most 10 GB of data in that time.
Well today, I discovered the issue via the (freel) app Time Tracker, which showed 10+ GB of data for each backup was coming from TechTool Protection (in Application Support). I went into TM and did a 'delete all' for this backup, and it restored a good 350 GB back to my TM drive.
As I typed this, I initiated a TM backup, that is now 10 MB, which seems normal and expected.
I still feel like a relative novice when it comes to the fine details of using TM, but glad I found this solution.
Definitely have to give shout out to Pondini for pointing me to Time Tracker and for the umpteen other tips I've received from reading the Pondini.org site.
As I marked this as a question, I would say there are 2 items for me that are still outstanding:
1 - the backup of 10 MB is slow - still showing under 100 KB. As I'm used to this from last few weeks, not a big deal, but I'm up for any pointers from anyone who thinks this can be fixed or ought to be fixed.
2 - I'm still curious about exclusions, especially within a 10.6 OS environment. I've excluded items that make sense, either cause I have them backed up elsewhere (i.e. iTunes Library) or because I didn't see the need (i.e. Apple Loops in Library/Audio folder). The ones that perhaps make less sense to exclude, but I'm currently not backing up are:
- Applications folder (did initial TM backup and then excluded)
- DropBox folder
- Library/Caches
- Library/Mail Downloads
- Public folder and Users/Shared folder
If you feel these ought to be included, let me know. And if you feel there is anything else to exclude, I'm up for hearing that.
Thanks.incidently it seems that time machine backs up everything the first time and only uses the exclusion list on subsequent times

I would like to access an old Time machine back up from a Core 2 Duo Macbook, but no longer have a Mac. I am going to buy a used machien to acess this. Can I access the backup from a cheaper old ibook, or would I need a Macbook. Is the OS important?
right click on the folder that shows with the red negative sign, and select to "get info". In the long skinny window that appears, look in the "sharing and permissions" section. In the "name" column, you should see your current user name. Ensure the "privilege" is set to Read and Write. If your user name is not in the name column, click the + sign, and add it, ensuring the privileges are set to Read and Write

If I already purchased FaceTime for Mac and recently upgraded my HD. How can I retrieve that app again? I found it in my Time Machine back up, but the files won't work. Please help.
Nope. I do the same exact thing. If you have DVD's and blu-rays you can't download a free application called Handbrake. You can set it to Apple TV2 automatic format and they will come out as playable m4v's that can play I'm iTunes. All you have to do is turn on Home Sharing in both iTunes and your Apple RV and you'll be good to go!

I want to access the old time machine back up and copy over a only a few files I need about 500. I cannot use migration assistant because I cannot move the entire back up as the entire back is too big.

Discrepancies / limitations on how Time Machine backs up?
I have a Macbook Pro and a Macbook with Snowleopard 10.6.8 installed on both. I back up both laptops on a single Western Digital External Hardrive configured for two partitions so that each laptop has their own Time Machine back up volume. This external drive is connected directly to my Macbook Pro via Firewire 800 where the first partition is reserved for its time machine back up. Therefore, my regular Macbook connects to the second partition over the local area network since I turned on file sharing for this drive.
When I click and view the Macbook Pro's partition, it shows a folder called Backups.backupdb which obviously has the time machine backup contents for this laptop.
When I click on and view the second partition for my regular Macbook which connects to it via the local area network, it shows some kind of dmg file called "John's Macbook.sparsebundle". When I click on the file, it mounts and shows the folder Backup.backupdb which has this laptop's time machine backup contents.
1. Why is the Macbook pro partition showing a folder where the Macbook partition shows some kind of dmg file?
I also noticed that I can't see the time machine backup for the Macbook if I try restoring from a fresh install of Snowleopard (going through the initial setup of using the OS where it asks if you want to restore from a time machine backup). It only shows the Macbook Pro as an availble restore option.
The only way I can see the time machine back up as a restore option for the Macbook, I have to boot from the snowleopard DVD, click on Utilities from the top menu, and click on Restore System from backup.
I'm confused on why the back ups are a little different and why I can't see the Macbook TM backup if restoring from a fresh install of Snowleopard.
I appreciate it if anyone can shed any light on my set up.Sorry, I do not know how to restore from a networked Time Machine backup. I'm sure there is a way, I've just never had to do it.
Just wondering if you boot into Snow Leopard, then with hard drive attached to the Mac, double click on the .sparsebundle. That should mount the Time Machine backup as a file system. Then maybe try running pointing Time Machine at the now mounted image and enter Time Machine.
I guess you could also keep the disk on the other Mac, and network mount the disk, then again double click on the .sparsebundle and point Time Machine that the now mounted Time Machine backup, then enter the Time Machine utility and restore the files you want.
Again, this is just speculation as I have not done a restore.
Anytime I'm changing my boot disk, I generally use SuperDuper (or Carbon Copy Cloner) to copy the original drive to the new drive. That way I do not need to do a restore from Time Machine. -
Time Machine Backs Up but doesn't retrieve
I use to have Time Machine back up to an external disk that was connected to a shared computer on my network. It worked great. It kept a disk image on the external disk which it mounted each time Time Machine would back up or when I entered Time Machine. Recently I have connected that external disk directly to my computer by USB. Time Machine is still backing up to this drive, it still knows that my oldest back up is from November 2007 and keeps track of it's latest backups. BUT, when I open Time Machine it no longer mounts that disk image and there is no backup history.
What have I done wrong? Do I need to delete my disk image and start over?james a Leff wrote:
Thanks (though I've found that genius bar guys, if you hit the right one, are better than applecare guys; the latter follow scripts and flowcharts, but the former are freer to think on their feet, not assume you're a newbie, etc etc).
In most cases, that may be true. But the folks at the Apple Stores rarely know much about Time Machine, since they don't actually use it. It's worth a try (and cheaper if you don't have AppleCare), but we get many reports here of wrong advice from the Genius Bar about Time Machine.
I guess one option is to wipe the disk, wipe my time machine and finder plists, and start again.
I'd lose all previous backups, but I'm pretty sure (knock formica) I haven't suffered any data loss recently.
That's always an option. Do you have another drive? I always recommend secondary backups, on separate hardware, anyway, but especially if you're thinking of doing that. Once you hit Erase, you have no backups.
Just to be sure we're on the same plane......I'm talking about going to the TM icon in menu bar with option held down, and choosing "browse other time machine disks". I get no choices. But with the wording of "other", should I see my main TM disk there?
Yes. It should list all TM backups that OSX can find, for any Mac, including yours. The only exception is, if they've been marked as corrupted. See #E2 in Troubleshooting. -
Can time machine back up on a wireless network
I would like to find a way to back up my Mac other than on an external drive. Besdides Time Capsule, can Time Machine back up onto other wireless networks? Also, is there a preferred, Mac-friendly online backup available (that may or may not use Time Machine)? I was considering using Carbonite.
Time Machine can backup to any device that has Time Machine Extensions.. eg some NAS have this.. or another Mac. Maybe some routers with USB drives.. I have heard of Netgear Mac compatible models.. but never forget.. apple change things around with every OS release and these companies will always be playing catchup.
You may also find it not easy at all to setup Time Machine.. I use a Zyxel NAS single disk model that does support Time Machine.. it has been fine.. but the setup is far more complicated than any TC.
Very few other devices will have TM available .. but if you use a third party software, then they will generally backup to any shared partition or drive in the network.
Buy a second hand TC and modify the power supply.. put in a big hard disk.. you can simply plug it into the existing network.. you will find it hard to get anything cheaper that works as well.. and none that will be as easy to setup.
Fine if you give up on TM.. then whatever external drive the software uses.. no issues.. but TM is designed to only work on HFS+ partition. -
Time machine back-up has nothing in the files!!!
My iMac 20 inch has just given up the ghost after 3 years and can't be repaired. I bought a new 24 inch iMac and planned to restore my files using the Time Machine back up I had from the old iMac. I have connected the hard drive to Airport Extreme and can see the Time Machine backups but the folders all seem to be aliases with nothing in them. What's happened and can I do anything about it?
When you connect the drive to an Airport Extreme's USB port then you need to enable File Sharing or the drive will not be accessible to any computer using the router. Furthermore, using the drive in this way is not the same as having the drive connected directly to a computer. Using the AEBS is the same as using any NAS which means TM employs a different method of storing files. TM would be looking for a sparsebundle disc image file in which the actual files are stored. What you see in the TM backup folder are simply Unix hard links (a type of alias) to the actual data stored in the sparsebundle.
If you used this drive connected to the AEBS, then TM will need to locate the sparsebundle. If it's gone or damaged, then the backup is lost.

Unsigned applet: some machines can copy to clipboard, others can't
My understanding of Java applet security says that an unsigned applet cannot copy-to or paste-from the system clipboard. However, on at least two systems at my office (but not mine) the user can highlight text in one of our applets, hit Ctrl-C and co
