Sharing a WiFi Connection in OSX

Lets say your in a hotel that has wifi and you have to pay $10 a day for the connection.  You don't want to have to pay $10 again for your iPad and iPhone to connect as well.
I would like to share the WiFi connection on my MAC with other devices.  I know how to do this with two WiFi cards but can this be done with a single WiFi Card?
I know technicialy it is possible to do this with one card because I have see apps for Windows and even an iPhone using the Jailbroken MyFi App that used a bridge tethered mode to share a WiFi (not 3G) connection to a number of devices.
Anyone know of a way to do this on a MAC?
All the best,
Joe

Hi Sig,
If only life was that simple.  The basic Mac XOS Internet Sharing will allows you to share a wired internet connection over wireless or a wireless internet connection over wire.  Or if you have two wireless cards you can share the connection on one wireless card with users onanother card.
What I wanted to do was share the Wireless Internet connectionon the same wireless card.  It looks like you have to pick a different interface for sharing then the one your wish to share using the approach you are recommending.
All the best,
Joe

  • HP 4750 wifi connection for OSX 10.8

    Hi,
I'm running Mac OSX 10.8, and recently changed my wireless password.  Now I can't reconfigure my wireless password on my HP 4750 Photosmart printer.  Your website directs me to apple software update, which provides the utility but not the complete software suite which would include wireless setup.  Tried resetting the printer, etc. to no avail.  Any ideas other than buying a new printer (hint:  the new one would not be HP).
    Thanks

If the Apple update software does not install the software for the printer, that may be an issue with the Apple update program as other users have been able to install the printer using that same utiity. The printer might be able to be configured on your computer, but to utilize that you would first have to install the printer using a USB connection as an altrenative to a direct wireless setup. Once it is installed via USB then the installation software should either prompt you or present you with the option to convert the printer to wireless. If there is not an option for that, then the printer will have to be used as means to connect itself. There is an option to do this under the Wireless menu (explained on page 4 of the User's Guide). Additionally, the link which was previously provided was to the full software for the printer, and there are no other links to provide for this printer. Lastly, there are at least three applications from the Apple Store which you can download from HP, several hundred other apps which also can use HP printers, as well as the default interface within iOS devices which allow you to print.

Thank you, and I hope you are having an excellent day!

  • Can't use my wifi connection while sharing it to my PC via Ethernet

I am sharing my WiFi connection to my desktop PC using an Ethernet cable. The internet works great on my desktop, however my MacBook now can't use the connection. It says it's connected to WiFi but nothing will load.
Anyone know how I can use internet on both devices at the same time?
    It's a MacBook (Mid 2010) running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1

Lets se if I understand this. Are you doing this because you don't have a router? And you need to create a hot spot? Here in an article on doing this.http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/turn-windows-wifi-hotspot-share-internet-connection /

  • Share wifi connection

When I sharing my wifi connection with the macbookAir all the other devices are able to see and connect in it but no one is able to surf in internet.
The macbookAir surf in internet without problems. It is on line with a usb stick from the brand "huawei".
This problem appen from 3 weeks ago but before was fine.
    I didn't change anything.
Do you have some ideas how I can fix this problem?
    Tks

Later edit: I've managed to share WiFi through Bluetooth. Still this is annoying as I can pair only one device at a time and reset all the thing when I need to swich to another device... So I can connect my iPad, but when I want to switch to my Blackberry or iPhone I need to unpair the whole thing etc etc..
So ideal for me would be the option to transform the Mac into a WiFi repeater rather than a Wifi-over-Bluetooth solution.

  • Connecting to shared iTunes via iPod Touch wifi connection

I was wondering if there was a way for me to connect to my shared iTunes music from my iPod Touch (IE in another room, NOT connected to a computer). I would assume that since my iTunes is shared over my wifi connection, and my iPod Touch connects over the same wifi, it would let me do this, but I can't find anything to support this evidence. I'm probably wrong.
If anyone has an answer, let me know! Thanks.

This assumes that you use the Ethernet port to connect the iMac to the Internet:
Navigate to  menu > System Preferences... > Sharing > Internet section. Switch on Internet Sharing and choose "Sharing your connection from": "Built-in Ethernet". To computers using "Airport".
To secure the connection (highly recommended) go to  menu > System Preferences... > Sharing > Internet section. Click on "Airport Options..." and check "Enable encryption (using WEP)". Then enter a password twice. You will need to enter this password to share your connection, although you should be aware even 128bit WEP isn't all that secure.
Additionally OS X IP firewall is probably blocking incoming Port 80 requests (i.e. web traffic).
Go to  menu > System Preferences... > Sharing > and under Services check "Web Sharing".
The wording in this post is for Leopard (10.5).

  • Why is my WiFi connection dropping as soon as I walk out of the room where my router is located? Running OSX 10.6.8

Why is my WiFi connection dropping as soon as I walk out of the room where my router is located? Running OSX 10.6.8
Had ISP provider here multiple times. They switched out the router/modem on 4 occasions. They ran new fiber optic cables to my house. They sent a PC tech here with a Mac, and he was able to get a strong wireless connection, but mine, he said, was "weak."
I called Apple support. They had me remove the battery and clear the PRAM. It didn't help.
There's no point in having a wireless connection if I cannot walk 20 feet away from the router without losing the connection.
Do I need a new Airport Extreme card?
How much would it cost to get one, and what is the process of getting it installed? (no longer under warranty)
    Deb Goonan

My ISP replaced my router FOUR times. I don't think that's the problem.
We already tried chanign the channel multiple times, channels 1, 6, 11 and even 9 and 4
    No luck

  • IMac loses WiFi connection after waking from sleep on OSX 10.8.2

Bought a new mid-2011 21.5 inch IMac this week. It is not re-establishing WiFi connection after waking from sleep. Was happening on OSX 10.7 that it came with, so updated to 10.8.2 and same problem exists.
I am running a mid 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina Display alongside, on OSX 10.8.2 and no problems at all. Cannot work out what is causing the IMac to fail and neither can Apple!
Could it be the Netgear Wireless Router 3 years old? Full signal strength!

    Me too!
I am on a MAC Pro desktop and I am having the same issues. I go to system preferences and just click the network icon. Then I close mail and when it opens it now sees the network. This is getting very annnoying.

It depends upon how the other machines are connecting to your MBA:
If the the other machines are also using wi-fi, they can connect directly to the wireless access point (router) without going through your MBA
If the other machines are connecting to the MBA using ethernet you can share your wi-fi connection to them

  • Is 3G shared internet considered as WIFI connection?

I have an iPhone 4S sharing the 3G internet connection with de iOS Hotspot option. My iPad WIFI is connected to that shared connection and the icon of a little chain appears on my iPad.
The questions is if the iPad will recognize that connection like a Cellular connection o WIFI special, in order not to do things like download/upload Photo Stream photos, iCloud Backup, Apps downloading things that only are configured to be downloaded from WIFI (like Instacast)?
Is 3G shared internet considered as WIFI connection by the iPad?
    Thank you in advance.

Yes, The Shared connection is wifi, and all traffic throught the wifi connection is passed through the 3G connection. You have to watch out for what you have enabled when you leach off your phones 3g connnnection...You will go over your plan limits in a hurry.

  • How do I configure Server DHCP for a shared-over-WiFi network connection?

    Hey all,
Here's how my network is set up-
Comcast > Modem > DD-Wrt router >(Ethernet)> Mac Mini >(WiFi)> Macbook Pro, other devices.
I set the router to use the Mac Mini (with OS X Server) as the DHCP server, and I have the Mac Mini sharing the ethernet connection over WiFi.
The issue is that while my Macbook Pro can get an IP from the Mac Mini (as per DHCP settings), there's no internet connection.  I'm not sure I even have the router IP set correctly, should it be the Mac Mini's IP or the router's IP?

I would normally use the router as the DHCP server but it should be possible to use your Mac mini as the DHCP server instead.
With regards to the WiFi, you would want to configure it in bridging mode, this will let WiFi clients and Ethernet clients be on the same subnet and the WiFi clients will then be able to request DHCP addresses from your server on Ethernet. This is the way I have my home network setup.
In the DHCP settings on your Mac mini server, you need to define the default gateway/router as being the IP address of your router. You also need to define valid DNS server addresses. If you running your own internal DNS server perhaps for Open Directory then this would be your internal DNS server address. The range of IP addresses you are issuing need to match the range being used internally by your router as does the subnet mask.

  • IMac OSX Maverick Wifi connected, but no Internet

Hello Mac community. I am in dire need of a resolution on this wifi connection problem. I've tried most resolutions posted here on apple support community.
    I've tried:
    1: Resetting PRAM & SMC
    2: Deleting SystemConfiguration
3: Deleting passwords off Keychain for wifi
4: Creating new wifi location under Safe Mode
I know my DHCP is fine. When I see my wifi connected, I can see my DCHP IP address connected under Advanced in Network Preferences when I check my connected wifi.
Strangely enough, I'm able to surf the internet after 10 minutes when I leave my computer enough. However, the internet cuts off and I'm back to no internet, but the wifi says I'm still connected.
There is another solution In that I turn off bluetooth, but I'm using a magic mouse and bluetooth keyboard. I can't risk turning it off and not be able to use those devices.

  • Intermittent wifi connection drops on OSX 10.8.1

I've noticed since upgrading my Macbook Pro (early 2011) to 10.8, wifi connection would drop quite often if open Apple store and/or Itunes. I've tried changing wifi channels on my router, but with out success. I would have to turn wifi off/on to try restore connection, this works most times, but becoming very annoying.
I have the latest update 10.8.1 installed and no changes. My router is a dlink, about 2 yrs old.
Has anyone else come accross this? Any suggestions to try would be great.
    Thanks

Yes, this happened to both my MacBook Pro and iMac after upgrading to ML and it is very annoying.  I was hoping for a fix in 10.8.1 but no luck.  This has been pretty widely reported so I was shocked when it was not addressed.  I guess I have to call AppleCare and open a ticket.
Ok, enough of that.  I tried everything - MTU setting, new location in network settings, taking the systemconfiguration folder (/library/preferences/systemconfiguration) and deleting it, and updating my routers firmware and none, none of them worked.
It seems, at least in my case, to be tied to 802.11n and possibly the 5ghz band.  I disabled this on my router and am only using 802.11g and this and only this has cleared up the issue.  This is really disappointing but at least I am not stopping and starting wifi every 3 minutes.
    I hope this helps.

  • Sharing wifi connection to pc

    Hello,
after exhausting searching everywhere I decided to pop the question here, not sure even if its the right section, sorry if its not.
I am trying to share my wifi connection on the N80 with my PC. I've connected the phone using USB cable, and have a Wireless network setup and working. I can connect to the wireless network with phone perfectly, but i would like to share that connection to the PC.
The Data Suite App has option to share internet connection using phone's modem, but can't it be done using WiFi, kinda like usb wifi dongle.
Perhaps some 3rd party applications exists out there?
    Thanks

There is no TCP/IP network router software for the N80 that would allow you to do what you want. I'm not even sure the phone has sufficient memory and processing capability to handle such a task in any decent way.
So, if you need your PC to connect to a WLAN network, best to get a WLAN adapter for the PC.
