  • Print Sharing across a wireless network.

    Hello fellow Macsters,
I am trying to share my HP printer across my wireless network. here is my network setup. I have a wireless network throughout my house. an iMac 20'' desklamp without an airport card is connected to a belkin router via an ethernet cord. That router creates my wireless network, allowing my iBook G4 to conenct to it wirelessly. The wireless signal is continued by an AX in WDS bridge mode, on the second floor of my house. Currently, I can share the printer connected to the iMac, but only when the iMac is on. I would like to be able to share it without leaving the computer on. I know there are multiple ways to do it, but do not know the specifics of them. Could somebody please tell me what they are. Thank you very much.

Well if its a non network HP printer it will have to be a AEBS. HP dosent make network operable drivers for thier non-network ready printers s and thos eprinters tend to only be PCL and not PostSCript. Since all the network print protocols on the mac rely on PS youre out of liuck unless its connected directly to MAC hardware.
If youre geeky and feeling ambitious you can probably finde a driver/ppd withh the support you need on linuxprinting.org but good luck trying to get it to work properly. I tried without success for a week to get our HP3500CLat work to work over any network protocol i could get my hands on with no luck. if you (or anyone else reading this) fares better please let me know...

  • Home sharing across two wifi networks?

I have two wifi networks in my home and each is attached to its own cable modem. Can home sharing be used across both networks so I can see my Apple TV and my iTunes library at the same time in the remote app? Thus far, I have only been able to access them separately by switching wifi networks on my iPhone. All my devices are set up with the same Apple ID. My main computer is running Windows 7 and it is connected to network #1 via LAN and network #2 via wireless. All my speakers including Apple TV show up in the Airplay menu of iTunes. Apple TV is connected to network #2 solely for the reason that the signal is stronger.
Any ideas out there? This has been frustrating the heck out of me. Thanks in advance!

Well I didn't think of it before, but I logged out of my apple ID othe iPad's home sharing. The I logged back in and it worked. It's a little weird, but I will take it. Thanks!

  • Home sharing across state

Okay - so I have traveled away from my home for business - but now I want some of my music from my computer at home. I instructed my family to turn the computor on and open iTunes - but I still can't get my shared library to show up on this computer. Can it not be seen cross - state? Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Homesharing only works across a local network.

  • Shared Printers and Guest Networks

I have an Airport Extreme with an HP 990cxi printer connected to the USB port. I have the printer shared. My AE is configured to Create a Wireless Network". It is also configured to create a Guest Network.
As it stands, someone connected to the Guest Network cannot print. Is it possible to give someone access to the printer w/o giving them access to the private network? If not, what would I have to do to limit their access to my private network and what would they have access to?

I would delete and re-add the printer.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the printing system and re-add the printer. In the Print & Fax system prefs, ctrl-click on the printer list and select Reset Printing System.

  • Virtual Private Networking

I've tried to research this subject before I posted, but I really haven't found any good explanation - I've had an icon at the top right of my screen since I've had my computer - it's for "VPN" - which I've basically ignored until today - I'm curious as to its function. Like I said - I tried to find out more about it, but every explanation is unclear to me. Can anyone tell me, very simply, what exactly is VPN?

The name kind of says it all, but a practical example often helps.
First, think of a private network as any local area network such as that used in an office, your home, etc. Everything on that local area network (LAN) is private, and protected from the internet by firewalls, NAT devices, etc.
That's all well and good for people inside the office. However there are many cases where people outside the office would also benefit from access to the internal/private machines. For example, sales people might benefit from accessing the corporate database on product availability, client profile, etc., or maybe want access to a corporate file server or email server.
One option is to open those services to the outside world, but you then run into issues with protecting the data from unwanted users - e.g. hackers trying to crack into the corporate database, download financial information, etc.
It's possible to do using various authentication systems, encryption systems, etc., but you have to apply the same rules over and over again to every service that you want to be able to access remotely, and missing just one leaves your entire network vulnerable.
    Enter the VPN.
The VPN extends the concept of the private LAN to specific remote systems. Remote users connected to the VPN (e.g. that sales guy on the road, the IT guy working from home, etc.) authenticate once to a VPN server and then appear to be in the LAN, just as if they were at a desk in the office.
As far as all the internal servers are concerned, the user is local. He can do anything he'd be able to do in the office, including printing on office printers, accessing file servers, etc., without the need to specially configure each service, and without the need to open lots of holes in the corporate firewall.
So the user on the VPN appears to be on the local network, but isn't - hence the 'Virtual' part of the equation.
VPNs can be scaled to support anywhere from one or two users to thousands of users across multiple continents - it's not uncommon, for example, for multi-national corporations to have VPN connections between offices. That way anyone in any office can connect, securely and easily, with anyone else, without having to worry (too much) about where that resource is, or whether it's available outside of the office.
    Does that help?

  • Private network being viewed as public.

    Hello everyone,
I hope I'm asking this in the right forum.  I have Windows Server 2012 up and running.  I've assigned one of my Network cards a static private IP address.  The DHCP service is running and working.  However, the private network is being
viewed as a public IP address.  This is preventing me from mapping a shared network drive on the network.
I am new to Windows Server 2012.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
You can try the following steps.
    Win+r, type gpedit.msc
Computer configuration> Computer settings>Security settings>Network List Manager Policies
Choose the name of your network connection, you can change network type there.
    Hope this helps.

  • Metadata over private network?

How can I tell if the Metadata traffic is going over the private network I have set up and not over the public one that allows my machines to get internet over. I set the machines up over the private network and they always showed up in xSan Admin as the private addresses until I plugged the second network cables into my Metadata controllers and two of my clients. Now they show up as the addresses assigned by my DHCP server on my local network.
My few clients that are not on my local internet network still seem to be communicating to my metadata controllers on the private side. I just want to make sure I am getting the best performance and Metadata isn't flying across my local network.
    Thanks!

I think you can do several things to check this:
x listen on the wires with an ethernettool
    x check /Library/Filesystems/Xsan/config/fsnameservers
    x check /Library/Filesystems/Xsan/data/<volumename>/log/cvlog
    x check /Library/Filesystems/Xsan/debug/nssdbg.out

  • Could malware spread across our wireless network?

Hello, I need a bit of help. A scammer posing as a Norton employee got access to our MacBook Pro via LogMeIn Rescue for a few minutes before one of our family members forced shutdown. He had ample time to install a bouquet of malware, but Sophos isn't detecting any. Just to be safe, it seems like the best bet for this computer is to reinstall OSX after backing up any necessary files.
What I want to know is, could malware from this attack have spread across our wireless network to our other devices? Our laptops, desktops, phones, etc... On the targetted computer, System Preferences > Sharing shows only Printer Sharing enabled, not Web Sharing, Remote Login, Internet Sharing, or anything else. Is that a good sign? Or could an attacker have leapt from our wireless printer to another computer?
I am more than happy to provide you with any other details--just let me know. Thank you for your help.

Most of the anti-malware packages for the Mac do not detect anything.  All that would be needed is to add an account or launchd .plist to run some software that gives them future access.
You cannot trust that system any longer.
So yes save essential files, erase, and install from scratch, including all applications.  Only restore data files.
Unless that Mac had administrator access to the other Macs without needing to authenticate, it is unlikely they could have spread anything to other Apple devices in your home.  Which is one of the reasons anti-malware packages do not find a lot of malware on Macs.  They tend not to get any via the network.
Social Engineering, such as what happened to you, or getting someone to download and install something with an admin password, is the more common way bad stuff gets into a Mac.
So I would not worry about the other Macs in the house, but do a wipe of the attacked Mac.
    Sorry for your loss.

  • Shared libraries AND private music folders?

I have had my iTunes set up using a Shared folder for about three years now with great success being shared across 4 users on one Mac. Each user has their own iTunes folder and their own iTunes library. The iTunes Music folder is an alias (link) back to a folder by the same name in my Shared user account. As content gets added, I periodically run "Add to Library..." from the other accounts to pick up the new content.
Now enter a maturing high school freshman daughter who needs to add a whole bunch of stuff I don't want access to. Namely, she has Berlitz German and Spanish language CD's that provide THOUSANDS of words - each as a separate audio track and each with a photo of that word stored as Album Artwork. So now, not only do I have thousands of 2 second tracks such as "pero" and "nacht", but my Coverflow has thousand of pictures of these objects. In addition, she has also started using GarageBand to make her own music, which also makes it's way into my previously pristine and well-managed shared Music Library.
So, the question is, how can I allow a user to have BOTH read/write access to Shared Music Folder, AND have access to private Music folders within their account?
    Thanks for the suggestion

No, but you can make a second copy of the song file, and have each library only see its own.

  • Create private network as the mac starts

    Hi all,
I'm wondering if there is a way to have my mac always start on its own private network.
Normally to do that I'd go to the Airport icon, and choose "Create Network", than give it a name and that's it.
What I'm looking for is a way to *always* have my Mac start on its network without having me to do it manually.
Hope I've been clear, thanks for any advice!

What you want to do is called "Internet Sharing". Read here:

  • WRT110 Public and private network

I originally set up my router on an XP desktop configuring it as a public network.  Later I decided to set up a home network with a laptop using Vista.  The laptop setup advised me that the setup should be a private network in order to work.  The internet works fine, but the computers cannot find each other even though I can see them on the laptop network.  Do I need to change the router setup to a private network on the XP desktop?  If so, how do I do that?  Or is something else going on here?

As you told that you are able to see your computer on your Laptop, but you are not able to access them. Have you enable File Sharing on other computer, Is there any Firewall or Antivirus on your Computer Disable it and try accessing your computer on the Network.
