Sharing an HP printer between 2 PC's

Hi!
I've been trying to figure out a way of using the same printer with 2 PC's. The printer is an HP Officejet 5610v All-in-One, one of the computers is brand new... an HP Pavilion PCp6674y running on Windows 7. The other one is a Compaq Presario SR1923WM running on Windows XP... I've tried a million different ways to share the printer through a network nd stuff but I've been unsuccessful. PLEASE HELP!!!!
THANK YOU!!!

I would suggest you install the driver on the XP machine and share the printer.  (See here for help if needed.)
Next, on the Windows 7 machine go to the Devices and Printers folder, Add a Printer, Local Printer, Create a Port, Local Port, \\XPComputername\Printername (use the actual share name for the  XP computer and printer), OK, then click on Windows Update, wait for the list to repopulate and then select HP (not Hewlett-Packard) Officejet 5600 Series (HP).

  • Sharing a printer between 10.4 PB and OS 9.2 iMac- impossible????

    Hello!
I have a set-up here in my dorm room, where i have my 15" PB G4, running tiger, connected to an HP Inkjet 5150. However, i just got my old G3 iMac DV (400 mhz G3, 192ram, 60GB, 9.2.2) up and running, and would like to be able to print without physically switching the printer between the two computers. (you ought to see this tangle of cables on my desk!)
Both machines have the current driver for the printer, and both can print when the printer is directly connected.
Both computers can be connected to the school's LAN via Ethernet OR AIrport.
I have looked through every article in both Tiger's and OS 9's help, and the apple website... i've tried everything, nothing has worked. I assume that's because they are written for an isolated system, while both machines are connected to a LAN.
I also know nothing whatsoever about how our LAN is set up - just how to connect. I do know that both machines are connected to a router somewhere.
I'm willing to do one of three things:
    1. Connect the printer to my PB, and share with my iMac. (preferable, since most printing will be from my powerbook.
    2. Connect the printer to my iMac, and share it with my PB.
    3. If such a thing is possible, i can connect both machines via USB (must get cable first), or FireWire in a sort of target-mode connection. I doubt there's any way to do that, with either FireWire or USB.
The best case will take into account how compatible os 9 is with OS X. Seems OS 9 has trouble talking to X, but maybe not the other way around...
I would like to connect them via Airport, if possible, since a direct connection by airport is much more reliable than the ethernet LAN here (rennovations in the dorm mean intermittent ethernet), and for security reasons, i don't want everyone in the building being able to see my prints. (especially if i can encrypt the connection!)
if any of you have experience doing this, please let me know!
    Thanks,
    Dan
    15" Powerbook G4, iMac G3 DV (9.2.2)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   512 Ram

    huh!?
    It seems to be solved!
I first connected to a Computer-to-Computer network, via airport, with file sharing on, and then made a new desktop printer. I selected the second printer profile: LaserWriter Color 12/600 PS-J, whatever that means.
What is really odd is that although it started working once i connected the two, the IP of the printer is actually the IP of my PB via Ethernet! (the Airport number has 2 different digits) That means that it's actually going through the LAN.
Why do you think that is?
I've tried printing in two differnet apps: Photoshop Limited 5, and MS Word 98. So far, no problem! I wish there was a way to choose how much ink it puts down, as it uses a ton, but at least it prints!
Thanks! Your suggestion led me to the proper way to set it up, even if it wasn't the exact setting. I'll continue to mess with it over the next few days, to make sure it continues to work, and i don't have any more questions.
    -Dan
PS: If i was to connect the printer to my iMac, how would i share the connection with my PB? Now that i know it's going over LAN, i can test it out while i'm in differnet parts of campus, it works that way, that is.

  • Problem setting up shared printer between PC and Mac with 10.6

I am trying to setup a shared printer between my Mac and PC. I have a HP K80 attached to my PC (which has Vista Home Premium). I have a Macbook pro with 10.6. I have shared the printer on the PC side. From the Mac I have added the printer via Windows Printer sharing, but for some reason I cannot print to the printer. Everytime I try to print, the job just pauses. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Thanks I installed the gutenprint drivers and tried this, and now all working:
    http://guides.macrumors.com/Printingto_a_Shared_PCPrinter
Printing to a Shared PC Printer
This article describes how to print from Mac OS X to a shared printer connected to a Windows XP machine. It assumes the computers are already networked and that you can access the PC's files. These instructions are relevant for Mac OS X 10.2 upwards. The instructions may work with Vista. I don't have the means to try it.
    1. Find the IP address of your PC - go on Start > Run. Type in cmd and click run. Now type in ipconfig /all and hit enter. This should give you the machine's IP address.
    2. Share the printer. Open up Printers and find the one you want to share. Right-click and choose Share. Now click the 'Share this printer' radio button. Now choose a sharing name. Keep it simple - e.g. HP, Office, PC etc.
    3. Open a web browser on your Mac and type localhost:631 in the address bar
    4. You should now have the Common UNIX Printing System web interface up. Click the 'Add Printer' link.
    5. Type a name for the printer, making sure you don't include /, # or space characters. Click continue.
    6. Select Windows Printer via SAMBA from the Device list and click continue.
    7. For the URI, you need to include a username and password for an account on your PC. You then need to enter a URI in the following format: smb://username:password@ipaddress/printer. So for example smb://johndoe:[email protected]/HP
    8. Choose your printer's make, or if you have a PPD file for the printer, choose that. Click continue and choose your printer's model. Now click Add Printer.
    9. Done! You now have a list of options for changing the various properties of the printer.
You don't need to be on the same workgroup or domain as your PC, just the same subnet. If both your Mac and PC are connected to the same router, either wired or wirelessly, then you should be on the same subnet.
    Thanks guys

  • Sharing a USB printer from 10.3.9 to 9.2

    Hello,
I have a classroom with one eMac running 10.3.9, sharing an HP LaserJet 1300 and 4 flavored iMacs all running 9.2. I was able to configure a USB printer on 2 of the iMacs using Desktop Printer Utility, but the last two don't see any USB printers on the network. I'm running all 5 machines on static IP addresses and don't see any difference between the 4 iMacs.
I've already tried using article 107060 and configuring the last two machines using LPR, but was unsuccessful at that as well. I can connect to the OS X machine through the network, but not its USB printer. I also tried dragging the classic 9 network location file to these two machines, but it won't let me add it to the Network printers window.
Could someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Mike

I was just going by the help for OS 9 sharing a USB printer. It says to start USB sharing on the "host" machine, check the printer to be shared under My Printers, and then drag that printer to the desktop to create an internet location file for the printer. This file is then copied to the Network Printer tab under USB sharing on each of the machines that want to share the host's printer.
I've also tried turning off USB Printer Sharing and just adding the printer through Desktop Printer Utility but there are no USB printers listed when I try to "browse" the network.

  • Sharing a Multifunction Printer with Mac & PC

    Hi Everyone,
I have a Canon MP780 Multifunction printer that I want to share the printing and scanning between my Mac Mini and my Windows PC. I was going to buy a print server to use on my network but they do not support multifunction printers. I was hoping to share without having to have both computers on which would be required if I share the printer on my network.
Anyone have a suggestion for a solution?

The Canon MP780, like most "budget" all-in-one printers, is a "personal use only" device designed to connect directly to a Mac or PC USB port. This device is not designed to be shared on a network - and if you do connect it to a network (via either a print server device, or connected to a Mac or PC and then shared) the best you will be able to do is print to it.
If you want to share all functions of a multifunction printer between a PC and a Mac on a network, buy a device designed for this job like the HP PSC Photosmart 2610.

  • Sharing single iPhoto library between 2 users on a single computer

    Hello,
I am currently using iPhoto 5 on a Mac Mini with 2 total users on the computer.
I know that it is easy to share iPhoto pictures over a server with other computers, but does anyone know how to share a single library between 2 users on the same computer?
I would like my wife and I to share a single library of pictures so that we can each upload pics from our digital camera of our family and friends and both have access to them. Currently, we each have to have separate libraries and it is difficult to share photos even between us. If this is not possible on iPhoto 5 or 6, this would be a great upgrade for the next version.
By the way, I was able to work a similar problem out with music out so that all users share a single iTunes library of songs by placing the library in the "shared" folder, but this is not possible with the iPhoto library.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi mconnor,
Here are all the links I have for sharing an iPhoto Library.
I think you would be interested in the ACL link for your situation. Hope it works for you.
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • Sharing out a printer via SMB on Lion

I have a complex situation where we share out a printer from a Mac workstation to a windows computer in another location. It worked fine until we replaced the Snow Leopard Mac with a Lion one. Now, the windows computer no longer sees the printer, even though the configuration is the same: SMB file sharing on, Printer shared out via printer sharing. I can see the SMB file shares, but not the printer.
Unfortunately, it has to be SMB and not Bonjour since the Windows computer is on another subnet. Is there any additional configuration we have to do to get this to work?

  • Is is possible to use creative cloud as a shared volume for collaboration between incopy & indesign?

I'm a designer student and as a designer, I constantly have to make decks for presentations.  I typically work in a group of six and because I'm confident with graphic design, I tend to be the leader of these tasks.  I've found the best workflow for slide creation is Indesign.  Unfortunatly, I'm just an awful writer— so when I heard about Incopy's collabrative features(saw the post from indesign's facebook page) I saw oppertunity and got very excited.  My teamates and I typically all have subscriptions to adobe cc because of this, I was wondering (since I havent used it at all) if the storage given out from adobe cc was able to be that shared volume that is required for the live link between incopy stories and indesign layouts.
    Therefore,
Is is possible to use creative cloud as a shared volume for collaboration between Incopy & Indesign?
If this needs any further clarification I'll gladly write a more detailed question — lastly, if this is not possible might you suggest an alternative?  Please assume that we go to school together but we work offsite also.

You will not be able to use the Files page at https://creative.adobe.com/files for collaboration in this way. But you can share individual files in this way.
When folder sharing is available this will be possible.

  • Trouble setting up wireless printing between my Macbook Pro w. Mountain Lion 10.8.1 and my HP C4780 Printer

    Hi all,
I'm having a frustrating problem trying to set up the wireless printing between my Macbook Pro 13" to my HP C4780 printer. I had no problem installing and configuring this before on my previous computer, a Macbook. However, when I got my new computer (the Macbook Pro), my wireless network wont show up when I try and install the wireless capability during the printer setup. I had to buy a new router and set up a new network around the time I got my new computer, so I wonder if this has something to do with it. My wireless network is a WPA/WPA2 personal, but so was my old wireless network with the old router and I didn't have a problem installing the wireless. I thought I might not have had the most up-to-date driver for the printer software, but I do. So, i'm stuck! Any thoughts??

Go here and download all the manuals and read them on how to set up your printer.

  • Printing to shared windows xp printer from 10.5.8

I AM TRYING TO PRINT TO A SHARED WINDOWS XP PRINTER FROM 10.5.8 AND HAVE TO RE AUTHENTICATE THE USER AND PASSWORD EACH TIME I PRINT. THIS GETS TO BE TIRESOME WHEN OU PRINT 50 TIMES A DAY. TRIED DELETING THE KEYCHAIN, NO HELP. HAVE SET ALL PERMISSIONS ON THE XP BOX AND THE ONES THAT I KNOW ABOUT ON THE MAC. ANOTHER SUGGESTION WAS TO PRINT TO SPOOL FOLDERS ON THE PC. WHEN I TRIED THAT THE PRINTER SHOWED UP ON THE MAC AS A SHARED DRIVE. ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED.

Hello jackc5417 and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You could look at creating a queue with the user name and password entered. This can be done via the Advanced menu of the Add printer.
To make the Advanced menu option appear on Mac OS X 10.5, you have to customize the printer browser toolbar. After selecting to add a printer queue, hold down the Control key and click in the toolbar. In the new menu that appears, select Customize Toolbar. This will make a sheet appear and permit you to drag the Advanced icon up to the toolbar to add it. Now you can use the following steps.
    1. Click on Advanced.
    2. Select ‘Windows'
    3. For Device Name, enter a name for the printer you are creating.
    4. For the Device URI, after the text “smb://” enter a user account that is registered on the Windows computer sharing the printer followed by a colon. Then without any spaces enter the account’s password followed by the @ symbol. Now enter the computer name (or IP address) of the Windows computer, a forward slash, and the printer share name.
    For example:
    smb://username:password@computername/printersharename
    5. For the Printer Using menu, select the appropriate PPD.
    6. Click Add to finish
BTW - try not to use CAPS lock in future. It makes it hard to read...

  • How to print between head-Tags of a Portal component

    Hello,
is it possible to print between the -Tags of the generated HTML-Code? I need to insert a JAVAScript between the tags.
Currently i am simply using the Writer-Object in the doContent() to print out the HTML-Code. But i found nothing how to access the head?
    With best regards
Edited by: Björn Karpenstein on Aug 19, 2008 9:12 AM

    Hi,
One way of doing this is by creating a new Servlet Responce in doContent method. This way you can set the head tag by yourself.
    Here is the code:
// get the reference to the ServletResponse (exclusivly) and set the content type to HTML
    ServletResponse sResponse = portalComponentRequest.getServletResponse(true);
    sResponse.setContentType("text/html");
// get the reference to the PrintWriter
      PrintWriter writer = sResponse.getWriter();
    // write the HTML header
    writer.write("<html><head></head><body>\n");
Check if this suites your requirement, if not let me know.
    Regards,
    Praveen Gudapati

    Hello danamaple,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
Depending on the Operating System installed on the computer, setting up the Deskjet 2540 can be done different ways. The easiest and most popular method is to use a USB cable and the printer software to setup wireless on the printer.

  • Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

File Sharing failed between my Mavericks iMacs.  The console logs showed that the target iMac saw the ntlmv2 protocol as unknown to the kdc.  I fixed it by enabling Windows File Sharing on the target Mavericks iMac.  I had tried disabling SMB on both iMacs and leaving AFP on, but then nothing happened when I tried to connect.  Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

When you enable file sharing you need to have either SMB (Windows) or AFP (historically Apple-native) file sharing checked. The default in Mavericks is SMB, and not AFP.
If you uncheck both, then the system will turn off file sharing. Apple supports the use of both SMB and AFP connections in Mavericks, so with only AFP enabled you should have been able to establish a connection, but there could be a small bug or configuration-specific snafu that you're encountering.
With AFP enabled only, try pressing Command-K in the Finder to open the Connect To Server dialogue, and in here enter the address to the system using afp:// as the protocol, such as the following (the name can be looked up in the Sharing system preferences):
    afp://my_imac.local

Have a HP Desk Jet 1220C as a shared printer under XP Pro SP2, accessible to all other pc's on the network but cannot get the Mac mini to pick it up on the network even though I have no problem picking up all the shared hd drives on the pc's through the network via the Mac.

Mac does not pick up pc's individual computer names on the network.
    Mac running OSX 10.5x.

    Hi Wayne
    Thanks for your reply.
*>Your posts have been a little short of detail.*
I was being careful not to overload the locals with too much info...
*>1. How are you sharing the printer on the PCs?*
ermm...usual way, PRINTER>SHARING>ON(assign printer share name)
*>2. Did you try to share using Bonjour (on the Windows machines)?*
I have, but can only get this to work if my printer is plugged into the Mac and not the default other way round.
*>2. Have you followed macster's directions for joining a Windows workgroup?*
This produces no results or information
*>4. Did you then follow macster's directions for connecting to Windows shares?*
This is how I have accessed the PC's disks and files which the Mac did from the get go. However, this does not pick up any shared PC printers.
