Sharing an ISDN connection over LAN

I'm thinking of updating my Main computer and need some advice/help.
Currently I can only get ISDN where I live in Australia, which may be slow but it's also unlimited. I have a PC set up with the ISDN modem (USB connection) which it then shares to the Mac's on the Ethernet 10/100 LAN.
I was considering moving My G4 PowerMac into that roll, but I have several concerns.
First Running does Telstra (Australia) support Mac's running ISDN, their site is unclear. I will contact them to clear this up.
Second how easy is it to share a connection with other Mac's and PC's, can this be done wirelessly also?
But more important how long will the aging G4 last running 24/7, right now normally at night or when not in use (when I go out) I put it in to deep sleep but how long will the Mac last running all the time?
The main reason I need to think about this is the only 2yo PC might have a fault and I don't want to be left Internetless if it fails and I need to think about how to spend the limited money I have. I would prefer getting a cheap PC to use as my Internet and file server leaving my Mac's to actually use everyday. I have not had any security issues with this set up as I have firewalls set up on the PC and Mac's and security software on the PC.

While there are Mac boxes listed at the Telstra Bigpond site, I'd tend to look for an IDSN-capable firewall with Ethernet capabilities.
There appear to be several of these devices around that claim Telstra Bigpond compatibility. Cisco, NetGear, Traverse Technologies, Draytek and other vendors all appear to be in this market.
You'll probably want a network box with an ISDN port (or ADSL over ISDN, depending on what Telstra offers in your area), a firewall, and with some number of Ethernet ports (an Ethernet switch) and/or wireless networking. I'm not familiar with Telstra Bigpond ISDN in any detail, though I'd expect one of these devices to connect into the provided ISDN modem.
Cisco 801 and 803 routers come up in discussions fairly regularly, though Cisco routers aren't the easiest devices for new-to-Cisco folks to configure and manage. And these are comparatively expensive, even if you find them used.
You might also check with some Australian local vendors; there were substantial electronics stores in Sydney and Melbourne. They're likely rather more familiar with the local router/firewall options.

  • Sharing Airport Internet connection Over Ethernet

    Hi
    I've read various things about this on the forums here, but none of them seem to make a considerable amount of sense seeing as the person just magically works out the problem. So I'll attempt to describe my problem.
    I'm trying to share my Intel iMac's Airport connection to another mac running 10.4.6 over ethernet. I'm using crossover cable, and so far I've got the two computers to recognise each other in Network tab of the Finder, so I can mount the other's HD on my desktop if i wanted. BUT, I am having no luck with sharing my internet connection, I have the 'Share my Airport connection over Ethernet' settings ticked in System Preferences on the iMac with airport, but the "light" on the network overview page is orange on both computers, and the one connected with ethernet does not connect to the internet.
    Any idea what I may be doing wrong?
    Thanks a lot
    Mo

    You are sharing one connection from the main unit to a secondary unit. The secondary unit only has access through the main unit, so the system doesn't see a personal web connection, just a web connection. In order to share that connection, it must be seen as a "personal" or directly connected form of network. This is so that somebody can't just steal your connection and then filter it to a billion computers and hack you and really mess up your system. If you want to share that connection, I suggest you invest in a wireless router. Then you can share all peripherals from the main unit and other units in any configuration you wish, and then use your secondary(wireless) unit to share directly to the third unit(crossover cable) without having to set a bunch of manual controls and troubleshoot. Printers, some scanners, and sometimes even dvd burners can be shared across a router. And because the system reads two connections(comp-to-comp and comp-to-web) through the router, you can actually fully network all peripherals to work across each unit, so long as they all run the same versions of OS and software. Just remember, you get what you pay for with routers. $100-$200 should get you something decent and a USB speed-booster card wouldn't hurt if you can get it as part of the whole router package. I've used the same type of configuration and it has saved me days, even weeks of trying to move data onto cds and dvds to move between computers for using with different programs and tasks.
    good luck

  • Remote Speaker connection over LAN

    Even the Genius bar were puzzled over this one....
    I have several airport express's and an AppleTV on my network connected wirelessly and hard-wired to my LAN.  I also have an iMac & MBA on the network which both use itunes.  The MBA can stream music to all the airport devices with no problem at all allong with iphones & ipads.  but my iMac which contains my master library will not play to any of the airports or appleTV when it is connected to the LAN.....?
    If I disconnect the iMac from the LAN & access the network wirelessly I am able to stream to remote speakers.
    my first thought was to bond my LAN connection to my wireless conncetion, but I lost internet connection when I did this.
    Any suggestion?

    is anyone aware of any third part applications that allow you to bond a lan & wireless connection?  it seems strange that the airplay function works well when the mac is connected to my network wirelessly...
    the Apple genus bar have recommended that I take all my network equipment into the store to try and resolve the issue, byt I am reluctant to do so as it is a lot of equipment.

  • Connecting over LAN problems

    Hi, I'm trying to get a sample program going over a small desktop - laptop lan (both running windows 98se and named "desktop" and "laptop" on the network).
    The program works fine when both server and client are on the same computer, but when I copy the client files to my laptop and run from there, I cannot connect, and get the following message:
    java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission Desktop resolve)
    here are some code snippets:
    policy file on both server and client:
    grant {
    permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:1024-65535","connect,accept";
    permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:80", "connect";
    server:
    Naming.rebind("//Desktop/helloObj", theRemoteObj);
    client:
    RmIntfc c1 = (RmIntfc)Naming.lookup("rmi://Desktop/helloObj");
    I've seen similiar questions about setting up RMI over a LAN on the forums, but there weren't any corresponding answers! I'd like to try the simplest approach, ie, no webserver.
    Thanks for any help!!

    Hi
    The problem is probably with the client-side permissions rather than the server. It may be that the permission file that you've set up is not being used, or that the permission syntax is not quite correct.
    Try granting AllPermission to all codebases (on the client) and see if you can get the system working. Once you get it working, then you can be more selective with the permissions.
    Regards
    Matthew

  • Sharing GPRS/3G connection over WLAN

    Does anybody know if it is possible to connect a computer/laptop/handset to a Nokia handset (N80, E61, etc.) using WLAN and share its 3G connection?
    Nokia N80 - v4.0623.0.41

    Yes... I have done it, but it seems a bit flaky. I use it via a Bluetooth 2.0 EDR connection to my Apple PowerBook - we didn't get that far with our Windows machine (a Dell Inspiron) as the Bluetooth doesn't seem to work properly on that. Use Internet Connection Sharing on Windows XP or the Sharing Preferences on Mac OS X to set it up.
    The 3G connection is OK for email and web browsing, but Skype didn't like it much. Maybe Skype optimises itself for broadband if that's what you usually use?

  • Accessing and Sharing Common iTunes Library over LAN

    I would like to implement the following: store all of my music on a home server (Windows server for Crestron Compatibility) with iTunes and access it from Mac clients around the house. I would like to buy songs and store them on the server, but so that they are immediately available to very Mac client, so that, if I buy the song from the iMac in the master bedroom, the song gets to the iTunes library on the Windows server and I can see it on the Powerbook iTunes in the kitchen. Is it possible?
    I tried playing around with my two iMacs, and it didn't work so well. As of now, I have the master iTunes library on the new Intel iMac. I went to my G4 iMac and, under the iTunes advanced preference pane I mapped the G4 library to the Intel iMac's iTunes folder. I then bought a song from the G4, and the song showed up in the G4's library, but not under the G4's iTunes folder. Rather, it was correctly stored onto the Intel iMac's iTunes folder. Problem was, it didn't show up in the Intel iMac's library. I had to manually import the song into iTunes to make it show up. So, my guess is that it would be invisible even to the powerbook in the kitchen.
    Do you guys think there is a simple way to map the clients' iTunes library to a common location and make it immediately visible to every client? I think it's something more and more people will want to implement in the near future...

  • Sharing my iTunes library over LAN

    So this used to work, PCs on my network could access my iTunes libraries and play songs and videos, and I still can access /those/ computers' libraries, but they can't access mine anymore.
    Every PC has XP SP2 with all other patches, itunes 7.6.1, and this mini is at 10.5.2 and iTunes 7.6.1. This issue was already present under iT 7.6, and I don't know since when, since I don't use this feature all that often. Could have used it yesterday though.
    What seems to be the problem?

  • Sharing isdn connection - problem?

    I can`t setup my isdn modem on my laptop, so I decided to share my isdn connection with my desktop computer under Windows. I connected desktop and laptop with ethernet cable. In Windows I set private network and here are some info:
    IP 192.168.0.1
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    gateway is empty and in DNS fields entered DNS server adress from my ISP.
    Then, I configured network on Arch, changing rc.conf:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.255.255"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    It seems that network is working, but there is no Internet connection on Arch. I connected on Windows normally (dial-up; also I set up that connection on sharing), but nothing is happening on Arch.
    Where could I go wrong? I don`t have experience with networks and I would appreciate any help!
    Thank You!

    I'd recommend the $29 for a wired router or the $49 for a wireless one and set up the LAN properly. Then you don't need one computer on to run the other.

    When I attempt to print from say Safari, I get a dialog that says "Print - Error while Printing. OK"
    Please help. Thanks people, as always.
    I checked my Console.log and I attach what I see:

    Thanks greg,
    I had already Safe Booted and then re-added the printer by the time I had read your post. All is fine for now.
    Thanks.
    PS Prior to Safe-Booting, I had deleted/re-added the printer a number of times. Every time I attempted to print after adding the printer, it just locked and reproduced the error. Only after Safe-Boot did it come back alive.

  • Print to HP office jet 4110 over lan to Windows Computer

    I have lan connection over wireless. Have shared the printer under windows 2000. Have gone through all the add to printers requirements by Mac. This printer isn't listed. Have tried to select printers that I thought might be similar which are listed. The printer is installed on mac and will print if directly connected by USB. I have no luck printing over the LAN. Help

    I downloaded the drivers as suggested. It seemed to get started ok but then said it was looking for SAMBA which it couldn't connect to and then I got an error message. What is SAMBA and where should it be installed? Currently in my configuration the printer is connected via USB to my computer which is running windows 2000 pro. The Lan is wireless using Belkin routers. Everything is working fine and I can even stream video to the Mac. I just can't seem to get to the printer from the Mac. Would things work any better if I had the printer in the network instead of conected through the Windows computer?

  • My apple tv3 is connected via LAN to the Internet. Ipad 2 will not mirror.

    Can I only mirror being on the same wifi network as my Apple TV or is there a work around so that I can still use my LAN for better Internet connectivity yet allow ipad connection thru AirPlay to stream and mirror to my tv?

    no airplay is over lan not a point to point connection
    if it was then changing between 1 appeltv and another or a shared itune lib on a computer would be painful slow

  • Wake over LAN

    Since updating to X.6.8 my MP has problems waking remotely. I'm connected to my router by Ethernet.
    I haven't tried all that much to resolve this as I'm not aware there is anything else but the wake over LAN checkbox to enable this service. I have tried unchecking the box and re-checking it, I've also tried restarting my router and setting a different length of time before the MP goes to sleep.
    Oddly enough I can wake the MP if I try a little time after it goes to sleep, but if I leave it for several hours it won't wake.
    It isn't just one situation/application that won't wake it either, my Apple TV won't, shared devices from the finder on other macs won't and other services like the Apple remote app and eyeTV app from the iPhone won't either.
    Any thoughts.

    hoping someone can help me here, as I want to accomplish WOL in my workplace. I'm in a building that has a central router that divides the internet into 4 different offices (into jacks in the wall). The central router is a linksys befsr41 that I don't have access to because it belongs to the property manager. The central router's ip address is 192.168.1.1 This router is not wireless, but I need wireless in my office, so I have my wrt54gc in my office to use with my tablet pc. I've gotten my computer to wake up no problem over LAN at home, over WAN at home (from remote location), but when I'm at my office (2 routers chained together) I don't know what I need to do to get it to work consistently. So my questions are: 1. What settings, if any, do i need to change on the central router? Do I need to port forward to the IP of MY router (or my CPU)?? 2. Same question for my router? I've looked all over the net and can't find any info on what to do for WOL in a multiple router environment such as mine. I guess I need to somehow tell that magic packet thingy to go through the central router, then through my router, and recognize my MAC address and ip. I really appreciate help in this matter.

  • Scanning over LAN with Lexamrk x466 (no TWAIN source)

    Hi!
    We have a Lexmark x466 dte.
    There is a software of Lexmark available, that claims to provide a TWAIN source for using the scanner over ethernet. But none of my applications finds this TWAIN source.
    The Lexmark hotline said, that Apple changed something with the TWAIN implementation, so this doesn't work at the moment.
    How can I scan over the LAN to a Mac?
    (We don't need the device primarily to scan photos, but to scan documents to PDF.)
    Thank you very much n advance!
    Thomas

    Yes is is possible to do a direct connect via LAN. You have to double check to make sure your HP Laserjet m1120n is a network model (it should be, not aware of many laserjet's that are not). If your printer/scanner came with a manual or instructions its all explained in there. I posted the link below if you dont have the manual.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ie&product=344 7599&lang=en&#
    Series User Guide chapter 5.
    If that does not work:
    1. you need to find out the ip address of your HP printer/scanner
    2. In System Preferences > Printing > add printer > IP
    -select line printer daemon
    -enter ip address of your hp printer/scanner
    -select your driver and printer model
    3. In your System preferences > Sharing > turn on file sharing
    Your scanned files should end up in your Users > Public > Drop Box folder
    Hope this helps.
