Sharing an iTunes account without sharing iMessages

I want my kids to have access to my iTunes account but this seems to mean that iMessages from my iPhone end up on their iPods when they log in. Can I set them up with a second account on the same Mac (for FaceTiming, downloading music, etc.)? Or can I leave them with access to my account but set preferences to stop my iMessages from showing up on their iPods?

iTunes accounts and iCloud accounts are not the same and one does not require the other. On the iOS devices to go Settings > iTunes & App Stores and tap the button to sign in. Enter your iTunes Store Apple ID. Do not sign into iCloud on those devices.

Just go and buy an iTunes gift card at any store in your country.
Then follow all the steps you did, but when it asks you for the credit card number, there shoujld be a GIFT CARD option which will let you load your account witht eh funds form the gift card without providing a credit/debit card #.

As Ocean20 indicates, you want to make sure that you have automatic syncing turned off. In iTunes Preferences under Devices, make sure you have "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically" checked. Then connect each iPhone, and make sure that "Manually Manage Music and Videos" is checked on the Info page for each of them. Then go into each page for each device, and select what you want to sync to that particular device. (you would do this one device at a time - complete the steps for one of the phones, then connect the next one and do the same thing).
With this kind of setup, you can modify what will sync at any given time for a particular device once you have connected it to iTunes, but before you click on the Sync button at the bottom of the screen. If you want to change some sync options on a particular device, you would just go into the page you wanted to change (Music, Photos, Apps, etc.), make your changes, and then Sync.
If you do not have any changes, you can just hook up the phone and click on Sync.

We are using IPads in a school setting and having trouble setting up the ITunes account without a credit card number. We are only allowed to download free apps, the school is not paying for any, therefore we do not need to have a credit card for purchases. Is there a way to get around this so that we can still download the free apps onto the IPads?

Read the steps carefully as the order in which you follow them is critical. Note that you can do this only when creating a new Apple ID. You cannot use an existing ID.
You will of course not be able to get anything other than the free apps without entering in some sort of payment method (credit card, prepaid iTunes card, gift certificate, etc.)

The The person who gave yo the iPod did not have the right/licence to also give you the media on the iPod. If you use it yo are stealing.
Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content end Settings and set the iPod up with your media.

No problem, it is still much the same advice but you'll need to use third party tools to extract the data.
