Sharing an iTunes library between 2 accounts

I am setting up iTunes on a new iMac with OS 10.5.6 There is no obvious way to share one library between two accounts. I have tried the official apple method listed here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
but it does not seem to work. I have also tried copying the complete iTunes folder to /users/shared, but that did not work. Any suggestions?
You would think this could all be done with the press of a button.

It's a misunderstanding that setting the 'iTunes Music folder location' tells iTunes to look at that location.
The iTunes Music folder location is the location where your next imported CD is stored. The song locations however are stored inside the 'iTunes Library' file which is in ./Users/YourUsername/Music/iTunes.
Moving the music folder to another location without 'telling' iTunes normally will lead to loss of links. You will see exclamation marks before the song name, telling that iTunes can't find the files.
Recent versions of iTunes can track a moved folder, when it's moved on the same disk.
The other users will not see this music. You have to copy the 'iTunes Library' file and put it in the iTunes folder of the other user(s).
--edit
Instead of copying the 'iTunes Library' file, you can add the entire music folder to each users library.
This will enable every user to apply their own rating (which is not stored in the song file, but in the 'iTunes Library' file).
--end of edit
They will then have full access to the library, which means, every user can add and delete music from the shared library.
The methods of sharing music are described here:

Hope this helps.

  • Sharing an iTunes library between multiple accounts on one machine

I have tried to set up a shared library so that all users on my computer can access the same music. I have tried moving my iTunes folder to the HD under Users, Shared and setting the filepath in the Preferences, Advanced, General to point to that location. It works fine with the main admin account but other users have an empty library despite their paths being altered also.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Sharing itunes library between accounts

Hi my mom has just got an ipod for Christmas and wants to load up her songs. We share a computer but have separate accounts. She wants to have many (but not all) of the same songs that I have. Is it possible to share my itunes library with her so she doesn't have to reload all the CDs that we both like?

I did what the instructions said in the article "+Itunes:How to share music between accounts on a single computer"+ and I can see the music from my account but still cannot see it from my Mom's account.
Sorry about the double post, it was my first ever post and I thought I had it in the wrong place and could not see how to delete it.
Thanks for your help so far

  • Sharing 1 iTunes library between several iPhones/iPads without sharing iCloud configuration

My boyfriend and I both own an iPhone and an iPad. We both use the same computer and iTunes library to synchronize our devices. For that we use a single Apple ID. However, we also want to use iCloud without the data on my devices being accessible on my boyfriend's devices and vice versa.
How should we proceed so that we can continue using 1 iTunes account? Should we configure separate iCloud accounts? I suppose that in that case only the Fotostream of the devices linked to the iTunes account will be synchronized on the computer?
    Please advise.
    Many thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Ideally you should each have your own iCloud account, that way you can each manage your own mail, contacts, calendars, documents etc and avoid unintentional deletions and unwanted editing. If there is information you wish to share between you, this can be done with a secondary account.
Having separate iCloud accounts, doesn't mean you have to have separate iTunes accounts, so whilst you keep your personal data separate, you can continue to share music, apps, books, TV shows, movies etc.
You could always set up two user accounts on the computer if you want to download both of your photo streams.

  • Transfer iTunes Library Between Accounts

I realize this should be simple, but...
I have an iMac; my wife has a Macbook Pro. Our iTunes library is on my iMac and was under my account with Home Share enabled. Since she couldn't create and maintain playlists from her Macbook, she would log onto my account to change them and update her iPhone. I grew tired of her changing things on my account, so I transferred all songs to a new account on my iMac by dragging the shared folder into "Music" in iTunes on the new account. All 11,000 + songs transferred, no problem. Then I created a .xml file from the old account (File ==> Library ==> Export Library) and imported that file into the new account (File ==> Library ==> Import Playlist). That recreated all of the playlists, but only imported a few of the play counts, date purchased, etc. Maybe 1% updated. I checked the .xml file in text edit - all of the information is present. Is there a way to make it work?
    Many thanks!

People have high hopes for that XML file, and those hopes are almost always disappointed.
A better approach is to simply make a copy of your entire iTunes folder and put it on the computer she uses. (If your library is not already consolidated, run Consolidate before you do the copy.)
That folder contains the library data as well as the content. After you do the copy she will have an exact replica of the library, including playlists, playcounts, etc. From that point on, she can start making playlists or adding, deleting, and modifying as she wishes, without affecting yours.
As you acquire new content, if the other likes it too, put a copy there via home sharing or other convenient means.

  • How to share iTunes library between accounts

Lots of various ways have been sugested but none kinda work the easy way i was looking for. So, here's what i did and it works great... so far. (sorry if this is a repeat of something somebody has already said, if so I didn't find it):
1- moved the iTunes music folder to the shared folder (probably not neccessary anymore but it will stay there...)
2- changed the pref in iTunes under advance to find this new path. (in both accounts)
    3- downloaded BatChmod
4- draged both user folders over the utility icone (one at a time) and checked marked all settings to give max permissions to both accounts. also checked both autor/owner and unlock then applied. (now all I have and all my wife has under each accounts are totaly accessible by both)
5- Since my account had the latest version of the iTunes library file I alt/command draged an alias into the other acount. Deleted the existing iTunes library file.
Tested and works great... if i make a change it's noticible in both accounts and vice versa.
    Hope this helps

    iMac G5 20" iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Cubi,
I apologize in advance for bothering you, but I am having problems. These are the steps I followed:
    1. Moved Itunes Music Folder to shared folder and changed location of music folder in Itunes Preferences to point to the shared folder in both user accounts. My library is the only one currently on the system.
    2. Downloaded and ran BatChmod on entire user (house icon) for both me (User 1) and then logged into User 2 and ran BatChmod on entire User 2 house icon. As suggested I checked every box on the BatChmod utility including auto/owner and unlock and then applied.
    3. Created Alias of Itune Library file in User 1 (my) directory and copied it into User 2's ITunes Music Directory, removed Alias extension and deleted existing ITunes Library file in User 2's account.
The files are currently organized as:
    - User 1 (seth) ITunes Account contains:
    - ITunes Library data file
    - ITunes Music Folder
    - ITunes Music Library.xml
    - Shared ITunes Folder contains:
    - ITunes Music Folder
    - User 2 ITunes Account contains:
    - ITunes Library data file (former ALIAS - arrow indicates still alias)
    - ITunes Music Library.xml
When I (User 1) open ITunes, everything works fine and I see my playlists and library. However, when I try to open Itunes logged in as User 2, I get the following error message: "ITunes music library file is locked, on a locked disk or you don't have permission to access it."
I already ran BatChmod so I followed your suggestion and went to Command-I and insured that all Ownership, Permissions and Details state that Owner, Group and Others all have "Read & Write" permissions. Its still not working.
Any suggestion what I am doing wrong? Did I make it overly complex? Sorry to bother but your instructions make it seem really easy.
    Seth

  • ITunes - Possible to share iTunes Library between accounts?

    Hello all,
I'm an experienced Mac user but am currently setting up a new iMac for my family. I've never had more than one user account because I'm the only one who uses my macbook but now my family wants 3 different user accounts for the new iMac in their home.
Because I only use my one user account at home, I never thought about the fact that different user accounts would also split up iTunes music libraries. If I import music from a CD, I would like that to be accessible and available when using any 1 of the 3 user accounts. Is this possible?
For example, my mother and father purchase CDs together...so they both own the same albums. They want to share music on the iMac, but if I import discs twice it takes up twice the amount of time and much more importantly twice the amount of space. How can I get around this??? Can one user access another users iTunes library and make that the default folder?
Thanks for your help as always!!

  • Problem with sharing an itunes library between machines

    Hi all,
Hoping someone can help. I've moved my iTunes library onto my Time Capsule and have my mac and windows PC both using it. The problem is whichever machine I open it on, I get a message saying "Updating iTunes Library" for a few minutes. It's fine after that, until I open iTunes on the other machine, when the same thing happens. So have I forgotten to do something, or am I doing something I shouldn't, in order to use the same library across machines?
    Thanks all

    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Sharing same iTunes library between two OSX partitions

I have two partitions with an instance of 10.6.6 on each. Is there a way that my iTunes library on one partition can also be used by the other? So if I boot up OSX from the second drive, then I want to be able to access the library on the other partition.

From one OS, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to the other library. Both installs may need to be running the same iTunes version.

  • Transfering iTunes library between accounts in the same computer??

    Hi everyone
I use my MacBook both at home and in my office. I work in a small company, so everyone is very relaxed about security. I only have one account, but recently, while at the office I discovered someone browsing at some of my kids' pictures.
To avoid this,I decided to set up a "office" account. Everything went fine until I opened iTunes and found that I don't have any songs (they must have missed the memo about the new account!)
Is there an easy way to transfer those songs to my new account? I stress, this is the same computer we're talking about!!!
    Thanks

Do you mean they were viewing the pix on your computer? iTunes does not have pix for anyone to view. (This is the iTunes forum)
To avoid this,I decided to set up a "office" account.
You created a new account on the computer?
If you are talking about the computer, open the first accounts - > System prefs - Sharing.
    Under Services, turn OFF everything.
    Under FireWall, turn it ON.

  • Question/Problem Sharing iTunes Library between multiple users

    Hello all,
I have a question (potential problem) regarding sharing an iTunes Library between multiple users.
In the past, I had placed the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared, and created an alias to it in the "Music" folder of each user, and it worked fine.  However, with a recent upgrade to Mac OS 10.5, only the Home user account can access the library.
I read the Apple Support Document http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1203 uner Mac OS X which specifically states *not* to move the iTunes folder, just the iTunes Media folder (which I don't have, would that be iTunes Music?).
Any recommendations?  Should I delete the different alias, move the iTunes folder back to the home user, and then follow the instructions in the support document?
We're also looking to sync music purchsed on our iPod touches, as well as apps (which weren't supported in our privous Mac OS X version.
    Any advice is appreiciated.

    yes.
specifically states *not* to move the iTunes folder
*do* keep the entire iTunes folder in /users/shared, however, instead of creating aliases, launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder in /users/shared.
obviously, only one iTunes at a time can access the library !

  • Hello there - how can I share my iTunes library between two users on the same computer? I put the library in a shared folder between both and have selected this library on both as well, but when I update iTunes with music etc it only appears on one?

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

  • I would like the share an iTunes library between two different accounts on one Mac. How do I do this?

iTunes no longer works properly (aka at all) while using one of the user accounts set up on my iMac. It does, however, work when logging in under another user account on the same iMac. (if any of you can help me solve this issue that would be perfect). If there is no solution can anyone help with my request to share an iTunes library between two different accounts on one Mac. How do I do this?

Copy it to his computer into his iTunes library and authorize his computer with the iTunes account used to purchase them..
You cannot tranfser items from one iTunes account to another. Purchased items remain part of the iTunes account is was purchased with.
iTunes account - used to purchase items
iTunes library - where purchases (and CD RIPs) go on the computer
