Sharing between OS 10.4.11 and OS10.5.5 works one way only

This is strange:
I have two macs connected via ethernet.
My Intel MacPro using 10.5.5 and an iMac G4 PPC running 10.4.11.
- I can connect from the iMac to the MacPro, see all folders and copy files without any problems.
- I can establish a screen sharing connection from the MacPro to the iMac without problems.
- I also can connect to the iMac from the MacPro.
BUT when I want to open the remote public folder on the iMac from the MacPro I get the error message "Der Vorgang konnte nicht abgeschlossen werden, das das Originalobjekt für ... nicht gefunden wurde."
Sorry for the German. Translated this means something like "the request could not be processed because the original object for (username) could not be found."
And then I get disconnected.
Any idea why and how to connect ?
Thanks
Martin

Ok, I found it.
I had both SMB and AFP connections enabled on both machines. On my MacPro however there was a problem with the afpfs.kext. I repaired permissions and everything is now working.
Strange - I read several times that repairing permissions is hardly ever needed under OS X 10.5. Seems not to be true...

All my email has disappeared from iCloud.  I did not delete it, and now it's working again, but only from 28 August 2013.  What happened to my old emails? How do I get them back? thanks

Have you checked whether the emails are visible at http://icloud.com ? If they are, it's a problem between your Mac and the website; sign out in System Preferences>iCloud and sign back in again.
If they aren't, then it's a server problem and you need to contact Support. If you currently happen to have AppleCare, either because you recently bought Apple hardware or have paid to extend the inititial period, you can contact them here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/
You will need the serial number of the covered hardware.
If you are not covered by AppleCare, then - in common with other free email services - there is no free support and you may be asked to pay a fee; if so you should argue that this is a problem they've caused (it's not the first time, by the way) and you shouldn't be charged.

  • Find and replace an item in one column only

I have tried and tried and I cannot work out how to find and replace an item in one column only.
For example one column has a letter followed by a number which varies in length.
I want to find and repace the letters with nothing leaving the numbers only.
But when I try to do this all the letters in the spreadheet are replaced, not just in the column I have selected.
    Help please....

    Hi 8'
    Use a formula.
Insert a (temporary) auxiliary column to the right of the one for which you want to male the changes.
Assuming you description is accurate—every entry in the column consists of a letter followed immediately by a number of one or more digits—the problen could also be stated as  "How do I strip the first character from a string?"
Here's a sample. Letter followed by number in column B; number part without leading letter i column C:
    Formula:
C2, and filled down to end of column: =RIGHT(B,LEN(B)-1)
When the formula has done its work:
Select all of column C (except the ehader row cell), and Copy.
Select cell B2, and go Edit > Paste Values.
Select column C again and go Table (menu) > Delete column.

i have a 4th gen ipodtouch and the screen doesnt work to touch only voice???help

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • File Sharing between Snow Leopard MacBook Pro and Mac OS 8.6 Powerbook 1400

well ok, for some this might sound ridicule. Why should I still be using a 13 year old PowerBook. Let me tell you, this is writing/typing heaven, Zen-like; no distractions at all, no twitter, no internet (although possible), no emails just pure you and your text and if you spin down the HDD, absolute silence. as said before pure Zen writing heaven. and on top of that you're typing on the best keyboard ever on a laptop.
As you might see I love my vintage masterpiece of a laptop and use it on a regular basis. Just one Problem.
Since I Installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro 17" I just haven't been able to establish a connection between the two machines.
I have to admit, I'm not that versed with OS 8.6 but with 10.5 I had absolutely no problems accessing the shared folders on my MacBook Pro and vice versa.
My first thought was to activate Appletalk on the ethernet on my Macbook, which I failed to find anywhere. The Apple Discussions Forums revealed that Appletalk has been dropped with the introduction of Snow Leopard but all the entries where regarding printing issues with shared printers, I didn't find anything about actual file sharing and thus did not get any clues how to share files between my two machines.
My PowerBook 1400cs/166 runs on 8.6 and I use a Global Village Platinum PCMCIA card (modem and Ethernet combi card). this setup worked perfectly with 10.5 but I have not been able to make establish a connection since running 10.6 on my MBP.
I am really desperate since I heavily depend on being able to exchange files between those two machines through an ethernet connection.
So I kindly ask anyone who might be able to help me to please consider posting any solutions or at least ideas which could help me with my problem. I really would greatly appreciate any effort whatsoever.
Thank you very much for your time.
    EDIT:
What I forgot to mention: strangely enough, when I enable Internet Sharing on my MacBook Pro (through Airport) to Ethernet, my PowerBook 1400 can connect to the internet without any problems.
    Message was edited by: Apolloss

First of all let me thank you very much. It actually works (partially).
There seems to be a problem though. While I can connect perfectly from my MBP 10.6 to my PowerBook 1400, the other way round doesn't work.
My MBP does not show up in the Network browser of OS 8.6 but I could life with that.
The problem is that if I try to connect to my MBP from my PB1400 by entering the IP directly a alert message appears reading that the "User Authentication Method required by this server can't be found, please check the AppleShare folder in the Extensions folder and try again".
Do you have any clues what I'm doing wrong or where the problem may lie?
    PS.
Even if you may not be able to further help me with this problem, I ow you a great deal of gratitude and am very thankful for your help so far. At least I can exchange files between the two machines and that's what I needed in the first place.

  • Home Sharing between iOS 4.3.1 and OSX 10.4.11

I can't get home sharing to work between my iPad1 running iOS 4.3.1 and my iMac
running OS X 10.4.11 and using iTunes 9.2. Home sharing is set up on my iMac and I can run Remote from my iPad. I've entered my Apple ID info in the iPod portion of Settings on the
iPad. But when I go to the iPod app on my iPad, when I tap on "Library" nothing
happens. I don't see my iMac iTunes library come up under "Shared Libraries".
As a matter of fact nothing at all happens or comes up when I tap on "Library".
Does Home Sharing work with iTunes 9? Do you need iTunes 10? And can you only
get iTunes 10 with OSX 10.5?

Wanted to add my .02 experience.
New iPad 2, iOs 4.3.1 (got it and did that yesterday).
One mac running 10.6.5, iTunes 10.2.1 - home share, and iPad2 Remote - works fine.  Remote sees that home share immediately and it is working well.
One mac running 10.5.7, iTunes 10.2.2.... Remote cannot handle it.  Not only do I not see the home share "share" on the iPad, but when I try do do the manual route of 'Add a Library', the errors are bizarre!  It starts by taking a loooong time to spin and shows simply "Looking for" as the message on the iPad.  Then it fails, and says "Not found".  That's it!  I don't think it is the router, as the 10.5 mac is on the same subnet though it is not wireless.  I checked firewall stuff - it's not on.  And since it works perfectly on the 10.6 mac, I know home sharing and the way I set things up works.
Stumped on this.  Since I don't know if there are any logs to see on the iPad, I have no idea how to approach this one.  But it clearly does not work with 10.5, at least for me.

  • Internet sharing between OS X 10.4 and XP

I am trying to share a dial-up connection on my PowerBook G4 running 10.4 with a Dell running XP over ethernet. I realize this scenario has been discussed by others on this forum, and I have read those posts (a whole bunch of them, anyway). But the steps don't seem to be working.
What I have in Network preferences on my Mac (all manual settings):
    IP Address: 192.168.2.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: (blank or 192.168.2.1—same results either way)
    DNS Servers: blank
    TCP/IP Properties on my Dell:
    - Obtain an IP address automatically
    - Obtain DNS server address automatically
    which automatically yields:
    Address Type: Assigned by DHCP
    IP Address: 192.168.2.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
    DHCP Server: 192.168.2.1
    DNS Server: 192.168.2.1
    Mac firewall is temporarily OFF
It all looks right to me ... but it doesn't work. The Mac's internet access works fine, of course. But on the Windows computer nothing will open in a browser. If I ping, for example, apple.com I get:
Pinging apple.com [17.254.3.183] with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out. (repeats)
From the ping results, it appears that somehow the DNS name is getting resolved into an IP address, but that's as far as it gets for the Windows machine. Typing an IP address into the Windows browser brings up nothing but an error (cannot find server). Other interesting facts: File networking works both ways; I can access both computer's shares from both computers. From the Windows computer I can ping the Mac, but if I try to ping itself (192.168.2.2) it doesn't work. On the Mac I can ping both the Windows computer and the Mac itself (192.168.2.1) successfully.
I had previously set this up the other way around: the Windows computer was sharing its dial-up connection with the Mac over ethernet. And perversely that setup was a cakewalk. It worked like a charm and never gave me any trouble. But now my Windows modem has apparently died, and so I thought I'd just try it the other way around. No dice. What is wrong?
I am using OS X Tiger 10.4.8, and Windows XP Professional.

    On the Mac
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
Share your connection from Dial-up connection via Ethernet.

  • File Sharing on a Network and it only works one way

I recently configured a new wireless network, and want to fileshare between my Mac and old PC. I have followed several tutorials, and I can read/write to the Mac from the PC. However, when I try to connect to the PC from the Mac, it asks for username and password. I type in the only user name and password setup on the PC, and it says I do not have access to that server. Any ideas?

There is a "Server" service, and it is running on the laptop. The file I needed to move was ~150GB - wifi would be faster than OneDrive. You can appreciate my desire for full gigabit speed :)
I can connect to the laptop from the desktop over wifi. So the functionality of sharing is all there for me. But I am completely unable to set the wired network's location to "Private", which essentially enables Windows Firewall rules under the hood that
    block any file sharing connections.
I can manually edit the firewall rules, but these apply only to network location profiles, i.e. "Domain", "Public", "Private", or "All".
I'll post a few screenshots to try and make this more clear.
Here is my wifi connection. Highlighted in red you can see the option to enable file sharing. Prett slick.
Here is a screenshot of my wired connection. As you can see, the option to enable sharing is completely missing.
The only explanation I can come up with for this is that it is an "Unidentified network", however on the other end of the cable is a desktop with the same connection settings running the same OS with the same updates and on that machine the network is set
to "Private" and has file sharing enabled. The option to enable or disable file sharing does not appear on the desktop either. The only difference between the two is that the network was enabled on the desktop prior to updating to Windows 8.1 (from Windows
8), the laptop had Windows 8.1 clean installed.

  • Home sharing between accounts works one way but not the other

My husband and I each have separate user accounts on my Macbook.
I have turned on Home Sharing in each user's iTunes, and I can see my husband's library (which only contains one song) but he cannot see mine.
He's just got a new iPhone, and I want to sync it to his contacts and calendar etc on his account, but that'll mean he'll have no music.
Any idea where I've gone wrong?

I'm having the same problem - my Mac mini, which I bought to act as an iTunes server, can see my MacBook Air's library, which has hardly anything, since it has hardly any storage, but my Air can't see my mini!

  • Wireless connection between D-Link WiFi router and Time capsule stopped working

We have an ISP provided D-Link wireless router (DIR-615) to which we wirelessly connected our 2Tb Time Capsule for back up and to connect a USB printer to out network. This worked perfectly for 3 1/2 years, until about a month ago, when the time capsule suddenly decided to go "off line". ie we could no longer access it or the printer via our wireless network. We had changed nothing - just one day it stopped working.
We tried to get it back online with no success. As the 2Tb Time Capsule was almost 7 years old and had had some HDD issues in the passed, we figured it had got old and died and that it was time to replace it; so we bought a new 3Tb Time Capsule, thinking this would get everything back to normal.
However much as we tried, we were also unable to get the new 3Tb Time Capsule to connect wirelessly to the D-Link wireless router. The Airport Utility did not show the D-Link wireless router or its wireless network, although we were (and are) able to see it in Systems Preferences>Networks from all our multiple devises. This in itself seemed odd. No matter what we tried, the Airport Utility would not find the D-Link wireless router and hence we could not add the 3Tb Time Capsule to the existing wireless network.
At the end of the day we got fed up with trying to add the 3Tb Time Capsule to the D-Link wireless network, and connected it via a LAN cable to the D-Link router instead. We then set it up as its own network. Worked gerat. Having done that we thought maybe the old 2Tb Time Capsule might not have been the problem after all, so we tried extending our new 3Tb Time Capsule wireless network using the 2Tb Time Capsule wirelessly. This worked perfectly! And we are now almost back to what we wanted.
So although we have a work around, this means now have 2 separate wireless networks as opposed to the original single wireless network where everything talked to everything else.
Can anyone shed any light on any of the following:-
    1. Why the original wireless network connection between the D-Link router and the 2Tb Time Capsule just stopped working? Was there some software change from Apple that "decided" D-Link wireless routers were no longer secure; and therefore the TCs could no longer connect to them?
    2. Why it was not possible to extend the existing D-Link wireless network using the the new 3Tb Time Capsule?
    3. Is there is anyway that we can get back to a single wireless network based around the D-Link wireless router as the primary router connecting to the modem, where the 2 Time Capsules connect as "wireless satellite base stations"?

    1. Why the original wireless network connection between the D-Link router and the 2Tb Time Capsule just stopped working? Was there some software change from Apple that "decided" D-Link wireless routers were no longer secure; and therefore the TCs could no longer connect to them?
A firmware update to the TC came along and you agreed to it without perhaps even noticing.. it then smashed your setup because Apple do not recommend the setup you were using and it is very poor.
    2. Why it was not possible to extend the existing D-Link wireless network using the the new 3Tb Time Capsule?
Because it is such a poor setup that Apple have taken away your ability to choose it unless you know exactly what you are doing.
    3. Is there is anyway that we can get back to a single wireless network based around the D-Link wireless router as the primary router connecting to the modem, where the 2 Time Capsules connect as "wireless satellite base stations"?
Yes, this I can help you with.
I have several ways around the problem.. but the first one is.. why use the DIR-615 at all.. it is not a modem.. it is a very ordinary bottom end, poor single band slow wireless router.
Why don't you simply remove the DIR-615 from the network completely.. plug whatever it is the ISP supplies you.. an ethernet connection from whatever that modem is you mentioned into the WAN port of the Time Capsule. And use the TC in some router mode.. same as the DIR-615 was setup.. dhcp or pppoe or whatever.. I doubt the TC cannot match it.
If you have issues please post a few screenshots from the DIR-615 to show how it is setup from the WAN side.. and as long as you are given the username and password or whatever the ISP uses to authenticate then chuck out the DIR-615.
Tell me if that is a goer.. if not we can work out a few other methods..
eg. Simply turn off the wireless in the DIR-615. It is poor cf the TC and there is no need for it.. with the TC in bridge only use the TC for wireless as well as wireless extend with your old TC.
Or setup roaming network where everything uses the same SSID.
Then you will have one wireless network. And it won't matter what as long as it connects.. although IMHO this is not right as the TC is such a superior router now you are wasting your new TC.

  • Screen sharing, audio is one-way only.

I have suddenly lost the ability to hear the other person when screen sharing. I screen share my father's computer all the time to help him with general computer issues. I have never had a problem with audio. I can always hear him, and he can always hear me.
Suddenly, this is not working anymore. He can hear me but I cannot hear him. This occurred in the middle of a screen sharing session. We were talking to each other and then suddenly he could not hear me anymore.
What's more puzzling is that I connect to my brother's computer in the exact same way and I do not have a problem with him. Audio is two-way.
I checked my father's audio settings and he doesn't appear to have muted his mic or disabled audio. My audio output is fine. I can hear system sounds, iTunes music, etc…
Could he have pressed a function key or done something without knowing and disabled his mic?
    Thoughts?

    Hi,
    Possibles (but not likely).
    1) In System Preferences > Sound > Input he turned the volume down or changed the Mic selection.
    2) In iChat > Preferences > Video section he changed the Mic selected.
    3) In iChat Video Menu he "turned Off"/Disabled the Microphone Enabled item (He would have to be seeing his own Screen and have control of the Mouse)
    4) Similar for the "Show Audio potion in the View Menu.
NONE (2, 3 and 4) of these have keystrokes set up in iChat or the System (1).
I am unaware if you leave an Audio or Video chat window open after the call was ended at the far end that the Mic Mute button still works. I could see that he may have such a window on his Desktop but don't see this as a working option.
Most Audio drop outs occur in Video chats and it is Internet Speed/bandwidth related (with a fair amount of Processor ability)
If the bandwidth is low (Lower that 256kbps and closer to 100kbps) then if the Frame rate is over 15fps then that computer may not be able to process the Audio as well as the Video pics and will drop the Audio.
Audio Only chats come in around 48-50kbps (top end dial-up) in 1-1 chats.
Screen Sharing at about the 120-150kbps mark (depending on how large the "Display is at the sending end)
This means if he dropped the Bandwidth Setting in iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down the Bit rate from his end may have dropped (slowly/Buffered) to a point where Audio failed to be sent.
The reverse would also be true if you dropped your Bandwidth to try and "Smooth out" the movement of the mouse/pointer.
For both of these last two things try iChat with the Connection Doctor (Video Menu Open. (You are likely to need to switch back and forth between your Screen and his).
I cannot think of anything that is "less intentional" like hitting the Space Bar or other keystroke or such.

  • Pix501: allow all incoming smtp to one host and all smtp out from one host only

I have a pix501 and I have a mail server. What I would like to do is ensure that smtp traffic from the web only goes to my mail server and that my mail server is the only machine on my local network that can send to the internet on port 25. This is to secure the possibility of bots on my childrens PCs spamming other users. The mail server has been relay secured for selected PCs only.
To the pix501; I think the following is what I need, but would like somebody to confirm or correct me:
    interface ethernet0 auto
    interface ethernet1 100full
    nameif ethernet0 outside security0
    nameif ethernet1 inside security100
access-list inbound permit tcp any host x.x.x.x eq smtp
access-list outbound permit tcp host x.x.x.x ant eq smtp
    access-group inbound in interface outside
    access-group outbound in interface inside
    Most important:
    1. Have I got the access-lists right? Does pix501 support host x.x.x.x (ip of local webserver 192.168.x.x)
    2. Are the access lists the right way around?
    3. Is the access-group setup right?
    4. Is there anything else that needs doing/
    Any help appreciated.
Note: I am a Cisco newbie and trying to learn,

    Thanks for that information.
I thought about this some more, after seeing your response, and I was wondering; if I only want to restrict smtp outbound traffic, but allow all other traffic, would the following work, as I dont have to allow each specific port/ip address:
access-list outbound permit tcp host 192.168.1.3 any eq smtp
access-list outbound permit tcp host 192.168.1.36 any eq smtp
access-list outbound deny tcp any any eq smtp
access-list outbound permit udp any any
access-list outbound permit tcp any any
I realise that this would open all sorts of other security risks, but at least trojans/worms will not be able to spam from PCs other than those listed as per the first 2 lines ( which is my major concern at the moment). As I learn more about the traffic on my network I can block more undesirable ports.
Sorry to be a pain, but this could be useful to other and the more complete the setup, the easier it will be for them.
