Sharing Cable Internet over Airport

I'm working on some computers for a friend.
An iBook (dual USB) and a Dell Latitude D600 with the Intel Centrino.
THey have a Snow ABS (dual Ethernet). I don't know what kind of cable modem they have, but i'm assuming that it outputs to Ethernet.
How would I set up the ABS so that it would be a passthrough to distribute the internet wirelessly?

Connect the Ethernet cable from the cable modem to the ABS's WAN port.
Configure the ABS so that it distributes IP addresses.
Configure the iBook and Dell so that they use DHCP to get an IP address.

  • IMac G5 isight Can No longer connect to internet over Airport

I have an iMac G5 that has been working fine on my Airport Extreme wireless network for 3 years. Suddenly, I can no longer access the internet over my Airport connection. The computer is on my local Airport network wirelessly (I can access it from my laptop and share files). I can connect to the internet from 4 other computers connected to the same wireless Airport network (2 MacBook Pro's, 1 Powermac G4). In addition, if I connect my iMac to my laptop via a twisted pair ethernet cable and turn on internet sharing on my laptop, my iMac can connect to the internet. All systems are running 10.5.5 and no firewalls in place. I checked my internet preferences and they have not been changed from what they were before when it was working. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHY SUDDENLY IT STOPPED CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET OVER MY WIRELESS AIRPORT CONNECTION?

I have just experienced the same situation. Everything was working fine and now I can't connect to my airport from my macbook pro. I also have an iMac G5 working perfectly well on the same airport.
Could it be a latest update that has caused the problem?

  • Extremely slow Internet over Airport, good speed with Ethernet

I've been using an airport extreme router (802.11n) for a while and recently I've noticed an incredible slow Internet over wifi. When I do a speed test it shows numbers like 200 kbps and I have a 10 mbps cable Internet connection. When I connect the ethernet from the modem it's perfect speed. Obviously Airport is slowing down my Internet connection. I tried resetting the Airport by pressing the reset button at the back, and it worked perfectly for a while. But after a few days it got back to slow Internet. Anybody have any idea?

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but I came across some changes (purely by experimentation) that may help. I hope so, at least...
I opened the Airport Utility and I swapped channels. The default is channel 6, but every other WiFi router defaults to this channel, too. I changed my Airport Extreme to use channel 3 (as well as my Airport Express), and now things are back to what I would have expected for an 802.11g connection.
I will offer the suggestion that those of you with the same Internet slow-down observed on their iMac G5's try swapping channels. If you have an expanded WiFi home network vis-a-vis an Airport Express, be sure to update it first before you update your Airport Extreme.
    Best wishes and good luck!

  • Problems sharing internet over Airport extreme

I have a PowerBook G4 (OS 10.4.11) with a USB wireless broadband modem connected to the internet. I bought each of my daughters a MacBook (OS 10.5), and the idea was for me to have my laptop connected to the internet, then use internet sharing via my airport extreme card so that the girls could access the internet from my connection across airport.
I have no problem using my wireless broadband to connect to the internet. I have no problem firing up my airport extreme and creating the network, and I have no problem creating the internet share. I all seems to be working at my end. On the girls MacBooks, we have no problem firing up airport and connecting to the airport network I created. However, when we fire up safari, all we get it "you are not connected to the internet".
    I'm lost. Any ideas?

cdelahoy, Welcome to the discussion area!
On your PowerBook G4 do you have the firewall enabled? If so, try go to System Preferences-> Sharing preference pane and enabling Personal Web Sharing. That should open the ports needed to give Internet access to the MacBooks.
If that doesn't work, try disabling the firewall on the PowerBook G4.

  • Can't share internet over airport anymore

    I’ve got DSL hardwired to a G5.
It has an airport that used to share my internet connection wirelessly to several laptops.
The other day, I restarted the tower, and I was unable to reconnect to the web from the laptops.
The little airport icon with the antenna/up arrow doesn't show up anymore.
I can use the airport on the tower – the card still seems to work so that’s not it. Something in my G5 system (10.4.6) won’t allow internet sharing to airports anymore.
    HELP
    Eric

Have you gone to system preferences -->sharing-->internet
check to see if it is switched on.

  • Problems sharing External HD over Airport Extreme network

I just purchased a 1.5 TB Western Digital MyBook Essential. I tried plugging it into my Airport Extreme so I could access it wirelessly across the network but I can't seem to get it to work. I have followed all instructions I could find and still no luck.
I tried plugging it directly into my Win7 PC and it came up just fine and I was able to put an HD movie on it. Then I tried plugging it into my Mac and it came right up and I could play the movie without any problems (although I did notice I couldn't transfer any files off my mac onto the HD).
I then plugged it back into the Airport Extreme and went to disks and it showed right up with 1.4TB free. I then adjusted all the File Sharing Options as follows:
    X - Enable File Sharing
Secure Shared Disks: With Airport Extreme Password
X - Remember my password in keychain
AirPort Disks Guest Access: Read and Write
X - Share disk over WAN
    Workgroup: WORKGROUP
    WINS Server: WORKGROUP
For some reason I still can't see it in finder to access the files on the MyBook Essential. I can't pull it up on my Win7 PC either.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks

Okay then, so there is no real way to have an external drive shared over the airport in such a way that both my mac and my pc can access it and read/write to it?
On the contrary. With an external drive, formatted with HFS+, the AirPort can share it to either AFP (Mac) or SMB (PC/Linux) clients.
I looked at FAT32 but it says there is a 4GB max file size, and I am mostly planning on using this drive to backup my Bluray collection which are fairly large files (7GB or more)
I would recommend HFS+ instead which has a max. volume size of 8 EiB. You can easily format the drive by (temporarily) attaching it to your Mac, and then, use Disk Utility to partition/format it as desired.

  • Only get 3.5Mbps internet over airport, should get 7Mbps

I have a 600mhz G3 slotloading iMac with the original airport card. When we got a cable modem a few months ago I got an airport extreme base station to network. My wife and daughters powerbooks can't hold the signal and my iMac only connects at 3.5 Mbps according to download tests at the cable company. My wife's powerbook (now connected to base station with ethernet cable) tested at 6.99 Mbps. The iMac gets 7 Mbps when wired.
    What's up with airport?
Things tried: Move base station; Change channels; Reinstall older extensions; Wear hat made of alluminium foil...
Are there any other suggestions out there?

    Hello R.W.R.,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!!!
Wear hat made of alluminium foil...
Wrong hat. It must be made of stainless for this to work (I use my wife's collander, the holes match the ones in my head).
Do you have any cordless 2.4 MHz phones?
In my particular case, my Airport signal is weaker due to having lathe and plaster walls in a brick house for my Powerbook (the Mini is near to the AEBS so I get full signal for it, the PB only gets about 50% signal in the next room).
Have you tried power cycling the cable modem (remember to wear the right hat)?
Are you running OS 10.4.8 or 10.3.7 (change in your specs)?

  • MBP on G5 over airport sharing internet (Firewall issue)

Got my ADSL/router modem (intertex IX66 edflc) with two e/net ports feeding one PC and my G5 quad with airport fitted. Recently got a Mac book Pro. Originally i could not get my MBP to get an internet connection using dhcp from the G5. The for some odd reason i got one then lost it again. Then i regained it again so i noted the ip the MBP gained, it was 10.0.2.2 which i understand is what the G5 would issue when its sharing its internet connection. So i setup a manual Ip address, mask and router and i all worked very well. No dropouts or anything bad, apart from some more range from the quad would be nice.
However the problem with this story is that the MBP looses its internet connection (not Airport network) if i switch the G5 Firewall on. I have Personal web sharing on as required on both G5 & MBP.
So is it possible to get internet connection sharing from my G5 and still have my firewall on (as i don't like it off) ? I would have thought the elegance of OS X would allow me to get good wireless networking without having to kill my G5 firewall... Or am i doing something wrong ?
MBP & Quad all up to date with patches etc...

Niel - Thanks for the good suggestion.
When tracking the blocked ports in the logs, i noticed that the ports were constantly increasing upwards and so couldn't open them u. So i tried to revert the MBP to DHCP and after 60 seconds it hooked-up to the G5 even with the firewall on and all protective modes also on (stealth, udp blocked...?).
So with a little patience on start-up i get a good wifi connection, but when changing from one website to another there is a noticable delay as it loads-up. Each page has about a 3 second delay to load. Any ideas what's causing this ?

  • Printer Sharing works over wired network not over Airport - Why is this ?

Computer A (eMac, 10.2.8) has HP Laserjet connected via USB. Settings : Printer Sharing On, Firewall Off.
Computer B (G4 iBook, OS 10.3.9) when connected via ethernet cable (via router which shares my DSL line) can see and print the HP Laserjet.
Computer B when Airport turned on to join network via AX (plugged into router) cannot see any shared printers. Nor can I add Rendezvous, Appletalk or other printers.
I only just added Airport capability to the iBook, other network features (internet access, file-sharing with eMac etc) all seem to work fine.
If I plug the Ethernet cable in, computer B can now see the shared printer. If I then unplug the Ethernet cable, reverting the computer B to Airport access only, I can see and print to the shared printer.
Clearly, therefore I can print over Airport to the shared printer, but the mechanism of plugging in and then unplugging the ethernet cable isn't exactly an advert for Apple simplicity and elegance.
Would anyone care to enlighten me as to what is going on and how to fix it properly ?
    Kind Regards

    Greg,
many thanks for the prompt reply, and this looks a good suggestion. To clarify; I have a wired router (Netgear, can't remember exact model) and 2 Airport Express (which I call AX-A and AX-B). I use AX-A as a wireless access point and it is wired into the Netgear router. AX-B is used to provide internet access to an older iMac in a remote part of the house (not that my house is very big or anything, and is not (I believe) relevant to my printer sharing issue.
I am now using AX-A to allow my iBook to join the network. I will check when I return home, but believe the AX is already set up not to distribute IP addresses - these are from the (wired) router.
    Cheers

  • If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

  • Sharing Internet via Airport Extreme using a USB wireless modem

I have had to go to NextG access using a USB modem (only option). We previously succesfully had the second iMac sharing the internet connection on an ethernet-connected wireless service. Now, I cannot get the other iMac to share the connection, because there is no option to choose the USB modem.
Another problem is the USB modem is top-dog - it won't connect unless I turned off anything else using anything remotely looking like wireless (even when I have my bluetooth phone connected to another USB hub). I can connect to the NextG network after disconnecting everything else and THEN reconnect, but I just can't get the Internet sharing going. I have also had the iMac freezing, demanding a power-off-power-on (unheard of in my experience!).
Is there any remedy for the Internet sharing at all? Configuring a different channel or something on Airport? Using one of the other config options?
I think there are something like USB-to-Ethernet adaptors (pretty costly here in Australia) and don't want to shell out for one if it doesn't work. Same with a third-party router. I also wondered if I should just forget about using Airport completely and run a few metres of crossover cable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Steven, I know this question has been answered and is a couple of months old but I think you may be able to help with my set up? I have a Thomson speedtouch 510 v6 modem router provided by Karoo (UK). My other Belkin N modem router has just bust [again] so the Speedtouch is my old faithful backup device. Now, i've never been able to get on ichat with the Belkin as its a mimo n speed and this is apparently not compatible; So i'm now on ethernet with the st510 and have just set up ports for ichat thanks to a thread called http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2719419&#2719419.
What I want to know from you (because I really need a wireless router to get me off this ethernet support system and back on airport) is how you're getting on with the st510 / airport extreme combo now and can you use ichat on it? If so does your connection doctor say full cone in network settings or something else? As I say, I really want to use ichat and have never been able to in 3 years of owning my Macbook Pro. Hope to hear back from you Steven. Regards Steph

  • TS4505 Unable to connect to internet over Guest Network  (Airport)

I have changed the guest network's DNS server IPv4 addresses to 75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76 and rebooted base station.  These are the values for Comcast.
Still not able to connect to internet over this guest network.
Do I need to do anything else?  Help!

Bob - thank you for your quick reply.  My setup is as shown in the attached image:
My guest network is on the Apple Airport TIme Capsule (v7.7.2).  Router mode for this time capsule shows "Off (Bridge Mode)" but grayed out.  No edits possible as shown below:
Northbound of the Time Capsule is my Apple Airport Extreme (v7.6.4) that is in turn connected to a Comcast uBee DDM3513 Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem.  I believe it is this one.

I am using several Macs running Yosemite. I was recently “upgraded” to Xfinity’s new cable modem which can support both 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz networks at the same time. Actually I can connect to the internet over both with a satisfactory bump in speed for the Ghz. However when I connect to the 5Ghz the Time capsule disappears from the Airport Utility and claims to be Not Found. Is there something I have done wrong or just a Yosemite Teething Problem

First restart your mac and try again.
    It could be
that the router and the TC are interfering wirelessly with each other.
You can check this by pressing the option key while clicking on the wireless icon on your screen
    Open Wireless Diagnostics
    enter your user password
    Press CMD 4 then Scan
You will see all the wireless channels being used in your location and you can check if they are on the same channel
Make the SSID for the TC simple like MyTC
    Set 5Ghz to auto
    Update the TC
    Try again
