Sharing Camera over Network Connection

Is there any way to share a camera over a network connection?

I've no idea ..so I've just tried (..but I'm no network guru..)
I plugged a TRV900E miniDV camcorder into the G5, and connected to that, via 'Airport' with a G4 PowerBook.
I could reach my iMovie projects, but couldn't see a camera connected when accessing iMovie, or my iMovie files, on the G5 from the G4. This is unsurprising because - as Karsten says - the G4 would need to get access to the FireWire bus (and camera ID) of the G5.
Now I may not have chosen the correct network connections or protocols: File Sharing obviously allows only files to be shared, not a distant FireWire bus; Windows Sharing is just for reaching particular folders; Personal Wen Sharing is to use the distant machine as a web server; Remote Login is just for logging in (..rather than sharing facilities..) onto a remote machine; I haven't bought Apple Remote Desktop; Remote Apple Events doesn't do it, either.
[..Incidentally, when playing material from the remote G5 on the local G4, the Timeline and Playhead and Audio Waveforms ran along the bottom of the screen as normal (..they comprise very little data..) but the video images themselves hardly moved: the 'Airport' connection is too slow to pass the video from one Mac to another ..so I doubt that live video would be importable without glitches ..but I haven't tried a direct Ethernet connection: why don't you?..]
It may be possible to relay the necessary commands to the remote computer to tell it to feed video to the local computer, but you're probably better off asking in the Networking Discussions, and I think it'd be such a long slog trying to get any worthwhile video feed that it might not be worth your time spent pursuing it. But try connecting via iChat AV.. (..I just tried that, and ended up in the Saturday 'Lounge' chat, but just via text. Gotta go now to watch the fireworks with my Beloved..)

  • Unable to access shared files over network after period of time.

First off, I don't think that this issue is related to our router, but I have been searching for a fix and can not find one. We have a WRT54GS. Now, on to our issue:
At my work, we have a small network with computers sharing files between the others. I have attached a network diagram to help explain this better.
Our Win7 machine is our main computer that shares an external hard drive with much information that the other computers need to access. What we have noticed is either after a sleep, or even a period of time of say, 2 hours, those files are no longer able to be accessed. The Win7 machine is still sharing them, but the WinXP machines are unable to access them anymore and my Mac can see the computer is unable to connect to the folders. I have gone and attempted to get some help over at Microsofts site but that was a fail. Here is the link to the forum post there. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/f0a2e8d6-f75a-41d7-a280-c6f3adbffa...
A member there gave me this:
The Network connection is probably not resuming after sleep.
    First try this, http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/power_save_win7.jpg
It is in the Network Connection Properties under the Network card configuration.
If it already checked this way, or does not work after checking, the Network card has to be taken out of the computer's Power Saving loop, and stay on all the time.
Otherwise, Updating the Card with the latest OEM drivers (downloaded from the computer's support site) might help too.
On a rare occasions, some cards might be "Quirky" in this regards and need to be replaced.
--I would like to add that this DOESN'T ONLY happen after sleep, it also happens after a time of being used.
I attempted those and no luck. This problem is still occurring and the only way we can fix it is by restarting the Win7 machine. But even if it is being used, we have no idea when those files are unable to be accessed.
*I will add that the Win7 machine is still able to access the other computers when this problem occurs if that helps.
**The Win7 machine is a Dell T3500 running Windows 7 64bit. I can provide specific hardware if needed. The drivers are all up to date as of yesterday.
***So upon looking in the Windows XP machine, both of the folders from the Win7 machine disappear once this problem occurs in the My Network Places folder. And one folder is on the internal drive, one is on external. The computers are in this situation now where I am unable to access them. The Win7 machine can read and write from the other computers, but the other computers can even see the Win7 Machine.
****All the connections are wired and are not using the wireless.
Thanks for any help that anyone may have for me!

It sounds like there is incompatibility issue with XP and Win7. To isolate this, do you have another Win7 machine? Try to add it to the network and check if the shared drives are accessible after sleep. If you don't have another computer, try virtual machine and create a Win7 system.
Update your LAN card driver from the manufacturer's site. Don't use the driver from windows update.
Lastly, does this happen to your XP machines? Like, one of the XP machine sharing a folder and falls asleep. When it wakes up, does Win7 machine can still access the shared folder?

  • Accessing shared files over network

I am having some problems with a couple of database files that I access with a Java program over network. Different computers running this program all need access to these files, and my question is if anyone know of a good way to make sure that only one user have access to these files at the time. There is no server software running were the files are stored, they are simply reached through file sharing. Currently I am creating a lock file indicating that someone is editing the files, however if I am unlucky 2 users create that lockfile at the same time and then both get access to the file corrupting it. Anyone experienced this and know of a nice solution to avoid it?

  • Backup over Network Connection

A little background: My main home computer is an older Dell with a CD-RW drive (no DVD-RW capabilities) and has the main iTunes Music folder on it. My wife has a Toshiba laptop with a DVD-RAM drive. Both computers are connected through a secure wireless home network and I have set up the main iTunes Music folder to be shared between the two computers, but mainly for copying purposes. Since my wife doesn't like all of my music, I created a separate iTunes Music folder on her laptop hard drive (also so she can have access to music while at work and not connected to the home network). Both machines are running XP SP2 and iTunes 7.1.
I would like to back up the main library (Dell) to a DVD-RW because of the larger storage space but can't b/c of only having a CD-RW drive on the Dell. Is there a way to back up the iTunes Library on the Dell via the laptop's DVD-RAM drive over the wireless network? Any info and tips would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,

    Hi there,
Essentially, as far as I know, what you are asking is improbable.
Buring a DVD is a very data flow sensitive process, such that any loss of data flow (say a short drop out of the wireless) would render the DVD being burnt physically useless.
Again, as far as I know, there is no software that supports this specifically, and although it might be possible to hack up a solution, it would be difficult if not impossible to get working reliablly.
Your best bet is to temporarily copy afore mentioned music to the Laptops hard drive, and then burn from there.

  • Screen-Sharing and Internet-Sharing via same network connection

    Hello out there,
I'm using a TiBook (G4 867MHz) and a MacBook Pro 17". They are connected via a WLAN-router. Additionally the MBP is connected to the internet via an UMTS-connection established with a Merlin 870XU type PC-card.
Network is working fine, including screen-sharing. Also the internet connection on MBP works without error. But if I activate Internet-Sharing via WLAN to get my TiBook connected to the internet, the MBP connection to the WLAN is cut off.
Can somebody tell me what's going wrong and how to solve it?

  • Sharing Files Over Network and computers not showing up in sidebar

I am trying to figure out how to share files over the network. Now when I click onto the computer in my shared items, I do not get access to the home folder that I used to see. Instead, I am getting a folder image with the user name below it, but it says Sharepoint. However, when I click on the folder I get another folder that says dropbox with a down arrow. However, when I click on that it says it cannot be opened because I do not have privileges.
What happened to being able to being able to get access to the home folder from the users on the computer that you are trying to retrieve files from.
Are there settings I need to adjust to allow me to get access to the files on the other computer.
The other computer is an iMac G5.
My next issue is that my wife's iBook G4 doesn't even show up in the shared items in the sidebar.
Again, are there settings on this computer that have to be adjusted.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Henry, and a warm welcome to the forums!
While you may get help or a solution here, It's quite acceptable to start a new topic of your own, certainly feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...

You need to add a User to the PC, or try with the PC's username & PC's Password.
My Main Problem is that my PC can see my Macbook...
On the Mac, did you enable Windows Sharing in System Preferences>Sharing>Services ?
I want to be able to use my printer that is hooked up to my Windows 7 PC with my Macbook
That has to be set first on the PC.

  • Question about Sharing folders over network

Alright, i have a mac and a PC, on the same network. I have a folder on my PC thats shared, and i can access it via the network tab in finder. The network icon thingy appears on the desktop, and it acts like a folder on my mac. Is there anyway i can move this "folder" to another location? Also, when i restart my mac, i have to conncet to the same folder again via the network tab. Is there anyway to have the folder stay there, even when restart my mac?

Create an alias or a symbolic link would be the normal manner so you can access a folder/directory from another location.
Can't help on the log-in automatically but perhaps SharePoints or something will let you. Do you use Samba to connect?

  • Shared drives over network - Mini inconsistancy?

I have a 1.25Ghz G4 mini running Leopard that's just been replaced as a media server by a 1.83Ghz Intel mini, also using Leopard. Hanging from the G4 was a USB hub and three 500Gb drives. The G4 was able to share the three drives to the network using AFP, from where my Macbook would access the contents with ease through Finder.
With the new mini in place, I am completely unable to see the three external USB drives, no matter what I do with the Sharing Pane, permissions or hints I have seen online. Both minis appear to be configured more or less identically, but the G4 has no problem with sharing, whereas the Intel just does not do it.
The G4 is still serving from a completely different external drive now, and shared it without any interference from me. An NDAS external networked drive is also being shared from the older machine - again, no drama: it just worked.
What is it with the newer Intel machine that seems to prevent a simple thing like drive sharing? Why does the older technology work so trouble-free? And might anyone kindly assist me in this? I don't really want to use Samba, but that seems to be my only way out now.
    Regards,
    Raukan.

Ahhh ... now we're getting something interesting. The three drives, if plugged directly into the mini's USB ports, go absolutely ape. Leaving the network out of the equation for a moment, the mini will not recognise more than two drives connected simultaneously. It varies between the drives and is not specific to a particular unit. All three are identical WD 500Gb MyBooks. Disk Utility reports the drives are all fine, and all three work on the USB hub (though not all on the network), on the USB hub on the Macbook (and I ran a heap of transfers and could find no issues) and on the same USB hub connected to the old mini, onto which they were originally connected in the first place.
    The plot thickens.
FYI, the unit's own drive has been completely wiped and reinstalled with a fresh Leopard installation and updated to 10.5.3,, with only Perian, Handbrake and standard Apple updates applied.
And to add insult to injury, after putting everything back together, I now have two of the three drives accessible on the network, but not the same two that was listed earlier this morning ...

  • Unable to Print to Dell v715w reliably over network connection

Just purchased a Dell v715w and was able to find the driver online. Have loved it so far, with one exception. When I go to print, I semi-regularly get an error message saying 'There is problem communicating with the printer.' Right now I connect to the printer over a network (using a Cisco WRT54GT wireless router). Any guesses what the catch is? I'm at a loss so far. Thanks!

To be honest, I don't know. How do I find out which it is? I assume it's what the manual would suggest, as I set up everything using the defaults as specified by the installer program.

  • Sharing library over network / iTunes won't launch

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. It's great. My itunes library is stored on a firewire drive which is connected to a Powerbook elsewhere on my network. I would like to load up the iTunes library from that machine rather than store it on my MacBook for space reasons.
First question is: What's the best way to do that?
I had it working by making a link (using ln in the terminal) from ~/Music/iTunes to the remote volume (/Volumes/Disk/iTunes) and that worked great. However I just accidentally launched iTunes without having that disk mounted. It presented an error and went away.
Now with the disk mounted, I can run iTunes but the main window never appears, and it is always "not responding" in the force quit window. (It does however mount any connected iPods which seems odd.) I've removed the link to the remote drive, deleted all traces of iTunes, and reinstalled, but nothing's changed.
    Any advice?

    Endquote,
This may sound simple, but have you tried to delete the .plist file associated with iTunes?
What's interesting, if I've found the right file, is that its not a standard .plist file. Apple calls it "iTunes Music Library.xml" and its in the active iTunes folder. This file seems to contain data about your library and I'm not sure if iTunes will rebuild it so back the file up before you delete it. Simply renaming it should suffice.
Please post back and let the community know if this worked. I only have one system right now, but you may consider for multiple systems to keep the Library local to the mac and use iBackUp to keep things in sync. This way you have multiple copies in case something should go south on one of the disks your music collection is on.

  • Can't log on to shared mac over network.

    Hi-
I have a MacBook Air (mid 2012) and a Mac mini (Mid 2010) both running OS X 10.9.5, both on the same airport network.  Both have the same user name and password.  I can't log onto the Mac mini from the MacBook Air, but I can log onto the MacBook Air from the Mac mini.  Can anyone suggest a solution?
    Thanks-
    Robin

    Carolynpyrenees,
so when you rebooted from Single User mode, it didn’t show the Welcome video again? It went straight to the login screen, as it was behaving previously?
If it didn’t ask you for a password in either Step 1 or Step 2 above, then you don’t have FileVault activated. Here’s another possibility to try in Lion:
Boot into Single User mode again.
Enter the following commands, one per line:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    /bin/launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist
    /bin/ls /Users
    /usr/bin/dscl . passwd /Users/username new_password
    /sbin/reboot
The ls command will list all of the “home” folders for users on your computer, along with a Shared folder which isn’t associated with any user. If the only folder that that ls command shows is the Shared folder, then something has caused your original user to be deleted; skip the dscl command and just give the reboot command, skipping Steps 3 and 4.
Presuming that your original username is shown by the ls command, the dscl command will replace the original password for username with whichever new_password you choose. You might get a message from the dscl command about a file or directory not being found — that message can be ignored.
After rebooting, see if you can login normally as the username with the new_password.
If only the Shared folder was shown by the ls command in Step 2, then let me know in your reply and I’ll provide the commands that would be needed to create a new user in Single User mode.

  • Sharing movies over network

    Hi,
I have two Macs on my home network, and I can share photos from one iPhoto to the other allright.
This does however not work for movies. Is that a documented feature or am I missing something here ?
Can I share movies between two Macs with iPhoto ?

  • Sharing airport network connection to an airport base station over ethernet

    Hi there,
I've got a network connection to the internet via Airport, on my iBook G4 with OS X 10.4.9.
This iBook is connected to the LAN port on an Airport Express base station (for physical wiring reasons, it cannot be connected to the WAN port).
This Airport Express has a dozen other computers attached to it.
Does anyone know how I might be able to share my internet connection, via the LAN side of the Airport Express, to all these other computers?
Incidentally, when I turn on both the Ethernet LAN connection and the Airport internet connection, I stop being able to communicate over the internet connection. When I disable the LAN, the internet connection returns.
    Thanks,
    Brian

    It turns out that in
    System Preferences->Network->Show: Network Port Configurations
You can change the order of the networking by dragging the Port Configurations.
Network sharing wasn't working for me because Ethernet was above Airport, therefore Airport wasn't being used as the internet connection. Having dragged Airport above Ethernet, it is now being used for the internet, and the sharing across the Ethernet works quite soundly.

I have an Ipad 2 that I use to view an IP camera over a Wifi network.  The Ipad is in a vehicle that leaves the Wifi range and then returns to the range.  Upon returning to the range, the Ipad has trouble connecting to the network. (30 seconds)  The Ipad will eventually connect to the network, but by this time the driver is frustrated.  I have moved the antenna to within 20' of where the vehicle comes to a stop.  My Iphone does not have a problem connecting or reconnecting when used side by side with the Ipad.  Both the Ipad and Iphone have Otter box covers.  Has anyone run into this problem or have any suggestions?

30 seconds to reconnect to a WiFi network is not unusual, especially in an environment where other radio signals on similar frequencies are present.  Sorry about that.
You might get better times by letting the WiFi base station pick another channel.  But you might not.

  • Printer sharing problem: printer not found by other Macs over network

We have 2 iMacs and 1 PowerBook, all connected to network through a Belkin router. One of the iMacs has an Epson Stylus hardwired (USB) to it. Printer sharing is ON. In the past, the other two Macs found the printer over the network and printed fine. Recently, they can no longer find the Epson over the network, indeed, when we try to "add printer" in their Printer Utilities, they no longer find any printer at all. Why did it use to work and then stop for no apparent reason, no changes were made (except for occasional need to restart the router if we lost our connection)? What are we missing?

As you suggested, I repaired permissions in all my Macs. That helped; the other Macs could find the shared printer. Then later on I needed to shut off both the host iMac and the printer. When I turned them back on, once again the other 2 Macs couldn't find the printer?! Since I had just repaired permissions earlier in the day I didn't think it could be that again. Then, I printed one page from the hardwired host iMac, and voila!, right after that page printed the other two Macs could spot the shared printer over the network again. I'm glad they came back online, but wish I knew what the heck was going on?! Why would printing one page from the host bring the others back, and did the earlier repair of permissions really have anything to do with it??
