Sharing - can see whole hardrive

Hello
We have a small office network. When I turn file sharing on on one machine, I can see/navigate its entire harddrive from another machine. Is this correct? I thought filesharing would only share the public folder.
Some of the machines have quite trivial passwords, so this is what's happening
I connect to basilfawlty's machine:
(using AFP) - apple-K
basilfawlty.local
enter the username and password - and can see the entire harddrive!
Both machines are running 10.4 and have appletalk on as well, since we have an old laser printer.
Any help/advice appreciated. I would obviously like it that only the public folders are shared.

Sorry, I have zero experience with OS X Server. I gather that it allows much more control over the administration of AFP though. Perhaps someone else will comment...
Otherwise, there is an "OS X Server" section on this site - you could try asking there, eg:
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=702
Edit: Actually, I'm starting to remember - OS X client does offer the option - with "admin" users, the server can be configured so that "admin" users are shown either "shares" or "volumes". Let me see if I can dig something up...
Edit 2: (It's starting to come back to me now).
Ok, in OS X client, some preferences can be set in the "/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist" file to control the behaviour of what an "admin" user "sees" while logging in to an AFP server.
I'm not in a position to test these at the moment, but the 'admin31GetsSp' property, with a value of "true" is supposed to let "admin" users see "shares" (not "volumes"). The last time I tested this (way back in Panther), it did not work as advertised, unless a separate property ('adminGetsSp') was set to "false" (this property is only supposed to affect what a pre-OS X Mac sees, which should have nothing to do with OS X users).
AFP is one of those things that seems to be in a constant state of flux - even point-point upgrades in OS X can contain changes that change the behaviour, and the state in "Tiger" is not so hot in my opinion. For this reason it may be necessary to try testing a few combinations...

  • Home sharing - can see movie on iPhone, but it won't play.

I've got home sharing set up on iTunes and in my iPhone 3GS. I'm in the process of testing the digitizing of my home DVD library into iTunes, and have made my first attempt.  The film works fine in iTunes on my Mac, and I can see it on my iPhone, but when I try to play it it hangs for a second and then an error comes up that says "The operation could not be completed".  I also have a couple of television episodes I purchased - they also show up on the iPhone and play with no problem.  Any thoughts?  The movie file is an .m4v - I wondered if that could be the issue?
    Thanks,
    -K

I've seen this when downloaded to a computer/device that wasn't authorized.  Try to re-authorize in case it (or someone else) became de-authorized again.

  • Home Sharing - Can See Computer on Apple TV but Cannot Browse

I have a Macbook Air (2011) and Apple TV (2nd generation) and I have successfully set up home sharing. I have the ability to select the Apple TV from iTunes on my Macbook Air and use it to play music/movies. However, when trying to browse the computer from the Apple TV, it attempts to connect and then fails with a generic error message about not being able to reach the compuer. However, I have the computer on, iTunes open, and am listening to music. I even tried it without music to no avail.

I think I've isolated the problem. The shared videos that are missing from the ipad mini "Videos" app are 1080p. I thought the ipad mini could play 1080p, or at least downcode to somthing it could display.
    Maybe it can't.

  • Home sharing - can see shared library but won't pull up songs to share?

I am trying to share some music with my daughters older mac... I have done it in the past, but it is not working now.  I can share her library on my laptop, but I see my library on her computer, but when I select it no songs come up and it jumps back up to her music library.  Any suggestions?

  • Hello, I'm trying to transfer my old itunes library to a new computer using home sharing. It's switched on in both computers, but I can't see the old library in the new computer. But I can see tracks from the new computer on the old one. Please help.

Apologies for poor syntax, my arm's a little sore. Yes, one computer (old) is vista, new is Windows 8. Shouldn't I be able to import the whole library using home sharing? Am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance

I am having the same issue.  I recently purchased a new laptop and I have spent the last 3 days using the home share to slowly transfer all 22,000 songs.  However yesterday morning when I turned on both computers to continue the process I am having the following issue:
both computers are running the same windows OS (8)
both computers are running the same version of itunes
both computers are logged in with the same apple ID
both computers have home sharing turned on
Now however I can see the NEW computers itunes library in the drop down box on the OLD computer, however I can not see the OLD computers itunes library on the NEW computer.  I can no longer see "HOME SHARES" on the drop down LIBRARY list on the new computer.  I've taken the following steps to correct the error:
    reset the router
completely shut down BOTH computers and brought them back up
    reopened itunes
    re-logged in on both PC's
re-activated both PC's with home share
The articles and help from the apple sites are worthless and it says if you can't see a library just turn home sharing off then back on - I've completed the above steps NUMEROUS times.  After spending 4 days on transferring my music I really do not want to have to start over by using an external hard drive and then importing that way.  I would like some help on discovering why the new laptop is no longer seeing my old library. (When it has been working up to this point)
    Thanks in advance.

  • Sharing won't see the surrounding network eventhough Finder can see it

    Hi,
    I am installing a Mac OS X 10.4.4 server.
    I have enabled:
    AFP
    DHCP
    DNS
    Firewall
    NAT
    Open Directory
    Software update
    VPN
    Windows
I am trying to share a volume/folder on a machine else than the server.
In WGM (in sharing/all), the only volume I can see is the Server's hard drive eventhough the Finder can see the volume/folder on the other machine (10.4.5).
I have been stock on this for a little while now and don't seem to find my way out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
    Cheers
    Ben

I am trying to share a volume/folder on a machine else than the server.
Just to be clear are you trying to "reshare" a folder from the server that is from a volume mounted on a different computer?
If so, is there a reason you think this should work? Do you have a documentation reference that states that you can do that or an example set-up that shows it being done?
I'm not an expert on the internals of sharing but I don't think this should work. For one thing while you say that "Finder can see it" it is actually only mounted as belonging to the current logged in user ie 'admin' or 'bversang' or whoever is logged in to the remote volume. It is not universally available to the whole computer just to the current user.
Unless you can find a specific reference my rule of thumb would be that if you can't see it in Disk Utility you can't share it from WGM. If I'm wrong hopefully someone will correct me but unless the computer actually owns the root of a volume I don't think the computer has the ability to share it.

Bought new iMac & moved (or thought I had) all of my music from the old PC to the new iMac. Have discovered several hundred songs are orphaned on old PC; I can "see" them with both machines turned on & iTunes open. "Missing" songs show in iMac itunes Shared folder. How do I move them all so I can then & retire the old PC?

From things you are saying, such as "shared folder" and having both machines on, it doesn't sound to me like you truly moved the whole iTunes collection.

do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

  • After upgrading to Yosemite I cannot see my other iMac at home (note I am at work) in the Finder window shared devices.  Note my iMac at home is connected to an airport extreme (as is my work iMac) and I can see both airport extreme.

Aftger I upgraded to Yosemite I cannot see my iMac at home from my work (i.e in Finder window under shared devices).  Note both my work and home iMac are connected to time capsules and I can see both of those time capsules but I cannot see either iMac from the other location.  My guess is that the time capsule is blocking the connection to the iMac.  One last comment occasionally (5% of the time) my iMac does magically appear in the shared Finder window but this is extremely rare.  Any help????

Just discovered this one myself.  OK, this may sound silly but place your cursor next to the word "Shared" on the finder sidebar.  The "hidden" command "Show" will magically appear.  Clicking that will display your other network attached devices.
This appears to be a new "feature" that some freaking genius thought was some how "Cool".   My only assumption is that Apple programers expect users to randomly move their cursor around the screen in hopes of finding some critical function like looking for an easter egg in their favorite game.

  • When I use Home sharing, I can see the library I want to copy, but when I highlight the library, the import button does not show up. Also, it will not let me drop and drag. How do I get music from one computer to the other computer?

When I use Home Sharing, I can see the library I want to copy under Shared, but I can't get it save on the computer under the regular library. I go to edit and "select all" but there is no import button that is in the right hand corner. Also, it will not let me click and drag the music. How do I get it from one computer to the other?

Since both computers are connected via the network, you could simply copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from one computer to another via the network.
If both computers are running Windows, use the Easy File Transfer Utility built into Windows to move iTunes and all other user media/data.

  • Why can't I see others in my home sharing, but they can see me?

I have set up my home sharing and my members can see my libraries, but I can not see their names, or libraries.  Why?

    Howdy slrsij,
It sounds like for some reason you cannot see libraries on other devices but they can see your library just fine. I would recommend you perform troubleshooting steps 4-7 from the following article:

  • Apple TV 2 Can See My Library, But Can't Connect for Home Sharing

I'm really at my last rope, so hoping someone will have mercy and be able to help here.
    Symptoms:
    - Go to my Apple TV 2
    - Under the Home Sharing menu, select "Adam Nash's Library"
    Result:
    - Spinning cursor
    - Cannot connect to "Adam Nash's Library".  Please check that your computer is on and on the same network.
Internet access works for all devices, they all can do Netflix and Apple Store.  Only one network in the house.  No firewall activated on the mac.
I have multiple AppleTV units, and this has intermittently affected all of them.  Periodically, I have solved the problem by taking them on / off ethernet.
    Things I have tried:
    - Restarting iTunes on the computer
    - Turning Home Sharing on and off on AppleTV
    - Turning Home Sharing on and off on iTunes
    - Rebooting the computer
    - Resetting the AppleTV units
    - Restoring the AppleTV units
    - Forcing the AppleTV units to different IP
    - Forcing the AppleTV units to Ethernet instead of Airport (by plugging into Airport base stations directly)
    - Swapping AppleTV units to different rooms
    Nothing works.
One clue.  I have three Airport Extreme base stations in the house, and this problem begain when one of them started misbehaving (would connect, but wouldn't pass through packets.)  It's an Airport Extreme Base Station (Series 1).  The other two are Series 4 & Series 5.  I reset the misbehaving box and reconfigured it, and seems to be working fine from a networking standpoint.  But once that happened, one of the AppleTVs started showing this problem.
Is there some reason that Home Sharing is hyper sensitive to the network in some way?  It *seems* like what's happening is that it's seeing the iTunes Library (which is why it show's the Library name), but when it tries to connect, something is either encrypted differently or permissioned wrong.
Hoping someone can help me.  Frustration is at 11.

One clue: I have found a reliable way to solve the problem when it happens.
In my network, I have the main Airport Extreme (Gen 1) which is connected to my router, which distributes IP addresses to my internal subnet.  The other two AEs (one Gen 4, one Gen 5) are set to extend the network.
When I get this problem with an AppleTV 2 that can "see" my library, but when I try to open it, it says it couldn't find the library, it seems to have to do with a change in which Airport Extreme it's talking to.
If I restart the main Airport Extreme from the Airport Utility, effectively restarting the entire wireless network, then when the network resumes, every AppleTV 2 is happy again.
Unfortuntely, the problem does seem to recur - but I'm wondering if it's because temporary interference leads an AppleTV 2 to try to connect to a different AE, and somehow that's mucking with the Home Sharing.  Remember, internet access (Trailers, Store, Netflix) have no issues.  Purely Home Sharing.
    Adam
