Sharing Computer name

My 10.4.11 server has correct forward and backwards DNS lookup.
Does changing the "Computer Name" field in System Prefs > Sharing break anything? Does this name need to match the dns name in any manner?
Thanks,
b.

Hi
I came across this not long after 10.4 came out. Site Admin did not like the initial name and changed it without telling anyone. DNS Resolution worked fine but LDAP Services were becoming a real problem. Problems began to multiply pretty quickly until the whole thing collapsed in on itself. This was an OD Master, DNS etc. Reverting it back using scutil or simply changing it in the Preference Pane got things back on track initially although problems began to surface later on that were finally fixed with a reinstall.
It was only prior to the reinstall the name change came to light.
In my experience if it's a simple file server it should not cause any problems assuming there are no other underlying problems. Restarting afterwards is a good idea.
If the name displayed in the Preferences Pane is server and it's hostname is server.mydomain.com and it's changed to newserver the names clearly won't match and I think this will cause a problem sooner or later depending on the Server's role and services configured. 10.4 is more forgiving in this respect than 10.5 and 10.6.
Others may have different experiences?
Hope this helps?
Tony

  • Shared Computer names dilemma in finder..

Hi all...In my Finder I am showing two computers that were once shared but no longer (PC and MacBook Pro)..both have been sold, but I cant seem to get rid of their icons...They wont delete or drag and are not shown anywhere in settings....Running OS X 10.5.2 Thanks in Advance....

Merl1n from macrumers.com was able to figure out the problem...He advised to use a freebee program called OnyX to clear out the cache..It cleared it and it is all fixed....Just thought I would pass it along....

  • How do I change my computer name or admin name

When I first got my imac it called itself "firsname lastname's imac"  (with my name, of course) and that apparently was my admin name too .. somehow I managed to change my admin name .. (I think),  and have been using that ever since.  However, whenever it is required, I am presented with the firstname lastname's imac, and a space for the password.. I have always jsut chaged this to my admin name and added the password.
However, I need to get my self back to java 6 and cannot do it because the terminal gives me no option to change from 'firstname lastname's imac' as the admin name .. so nothing I do will allow me to tell it to give me the java 6 back.
Please can someone help with this?

Very easy to do. Just go to: System Preferences › Sharing › Computer Name and change the name.

  • File sharing afp:// address not computer name

Just setting up my new iMac and the file sharing afp:// address does not match the computer's name (Brute Squad), it's pulled in my old PowerBook's name (Alumen). I'm assuming it came from my Apple/iCloud account since that was the only computer I had registered when I set the iMac up. Restarting didn't help. Any ideas?

You can change the computer name in the System Preferences > Sharing pane, change the name at the top.
    Best of luck.

  • Changing the Computer Name... when it's greyed out in the Sharing Prefs?

    Okay, here's a weird one.
Using Carbon Copy Cloner 3, I recently cloned the hard drive on my iBook G4 (OS X 10.5.4)—it was dying and I needed to swap in a new one. I made the swap, using the cloned version of my old drive, and everything was wonderful.
The new drive is great. The only artifact of the change is that when I see my iBook on a network, instead of the original computer name (let's call it +David's iBook+ for argument's sake), I get +David's iBook_1+. When I go to the Sharing Preferences pane, in the field where I should get my good old iBook's name, I get that _1 tacked on again, and instead of being able to edit it, the name is greyed out!
The hostname is fine. I can edit that. But the computer name refuses to be changed by any of the normal methods. I could probably go into Terminal and edit the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations/preferences.plist file. But I get the feeling that there's something else going on here.
    Any thoughts?
(I'm now wishing I'd just restored using Time Machine. Old habits die hard.)

Thanks! I should have mentioned that I'd already tried that. Several times. There are no other computers with the same name as mine on either my home or office network.
I can click on the "Edit" button and change the name to "David.local" or whatever, and it'll stay that way—but it doesn't show up on the LAN. When I look for the computer over the network—either using Bonjour or the Apple-K command in the Finder—it shows up with its old name. If I try to connect with "David.local" (or whatever), I get an error saying the server can't be found.
Since posting, I've also tried logging in as the root user and changing it there. No dice.
I had to replace the hard drive (the reformatting that caused me to clone the disk in the first place turned out not to solve the problem, which was that the hard drive was failing); for a week I was using an external drive clone as the startup disk for my iMac. It let me change the name there just as it should have. No more +David's iBook_1+. Woohoo!
But when I copied the disk back onto my brand new internal drive... There it was again. Greyed out. Can't get at it.
    Grrrrrr.
Again, it's not a big deal; I want to change the name so that it fits the naming convention at my office. But it's really bugging me! (Obviously.)
I suppose I could reinstall and migrate the accounts and apps over....

  • In System Preferences- Sharing- Remote Management the address doesn't reflect the computer name.

    Hi,
I have a dual boot system with two seperate hard drives, Lion and Snow Leopard.  One drive has a name of mac-pro2 for Lion and mac-pro2sl for Snow Leopard.  Something happened when I rebooted from Snow Leopard to Lion that in System Preferences->Sharing->Remote Management that the computer name had changed to the Snow Leopard  computer name it has a address and name of mac-pro2sl.  I have change the Computer Name: and it worked and was changed to mac-pro2 but Remote Management still has the address of mac-pro2sl and doesn't reflect the computer name.  I can ssh into Lion with mac-pro2sl but I have a conflict with from other computers when I log in with a warning of "Remote Host Identification has Changed".  How do you change the computer name for remote management and ssh?
I have changed the hostname and it reflects the change when you login, mac-pro2 for Lion.  But when you ssh into Lion it requires mac-pro2sl not mac-pro2.
When I change the computer name it shows below that the name in "Remote Management: On" "computer using the address mac-pro2sl" is selected but then doesn't change but remains the same when the dialog closes.  How do you change the address to reflect the computer name? Is there a command line utility?
    Thanks for any help.

If this problem is due to DNS, look in your configuration. What is the number one DNS server address? Is it local, or is it on the Internet at large? Or post the Address here and folks can help you look it up.
    192.168.yyy.zzz
    10.xxx.yyy.zzz
    172.xxx.yyy.zzz
    are all strictly local.

  • Old Computer Name Shows in Shared

My wife's old iMac's name is showing in Shared on the other two macs on the network as well as the new iMac's name. The new name is correctly displayed on her mac and there is no sign of the old name on her new iMac.
How can I stop the old name appearing in Shared on the network.
    Joe

Which machine shows your old computer name, the mac or the sony?
If the sony, try opening a dos window and enter
    ipconfig /flushdns
I think the equivalent function on the Mac can be found in Network Utility

  • Can't change computer name in Sharing because of old Vista install?

I have a strange problem (all of mine seem to be strange).
I am attempting to set up the four computers I have at home for file sharing - nothing too complicated. There is one iMac connected via WiFi, one PC running Vista via ethernet, one MacBook running 10.4.11 via WiFi, and the problem machine my MacBook Pro running 10.5.6.
Under the Sharing preferences for my MacBook Pro, the computer name is set correctly to "Nebuchadnezzar". However, under the File Sharing details, the address is set to afp://MacBookProVista.home/.
I previously installed Vista under Boot Camp, and set the computer name under Vista to this name, so that I could identify it on my network. But I have removed this partition the correct way. I also had a Linux and a Windows 7 install running on virtual machines but I have removed both of these as well.
Why (and how) has Leopard managed to get hold of the Vista computer name, and why hasn't it gone away after I deleted the entire Vista partition? I managed to get the address to change very briefly when I changed the Global Dynamic Hostname to Nebuchadnezzar, but it since changed back after closing System Prefs.
    Any ideas anyone?

Also, the Remote Management name is MacBookProVista rather than the correct name of Nebuchadnezzar.

I don't know if this is normal, but resetting my router seemed to clear these erroneous network names. I have a BT HomeHub (v2.0) and when you reset it and reconnect the machines to the network, as it resets the IP through DHCP it resets the "afp://" address to the computers MAC address.
As part of setting up the network, each device is getting a static IP - it appears in the device list as the devices MAC address, and renaming it here seems to do the trick.
I find this strange (and slightly confusing) that the naming of devices goes both ways, from device to router and back again, but it seems to be working. The Vista device name was obviously picked up when I connected it to the network, but it's strange that it didn't reset through DHCP, even though the name on the router came up correctly.

  • ATV2 "Computer" shows old sharing/accounts name

    os 10.5.8
I went in Preferences on my macbook pro and changed my sharing folder and network folder names.  My ATV2 shows my old name under "computer"  Do i need to update something in itunes?  how can I change this? Thanks in advance.

The Apple TV displays your library name not the computer name. You can change the library name in iTunes Preferences/General.

  • I can't connect to other computers on my network with computer names. Any suggestions?

i can't connect to other computers on my network with computer names. Any suggestions?

In what way are you trying to connect? File sharing? Printer sharing? Screen sharing? Something else?
How are your computers connected to this network? What happens when you try to connect to them?
    Best of luck.

  • Time Machine and computer name change

I just recently reinstalled the operator system after a computer crash when i did so changed the computer name and now when i go into time machine to restore the settings it only shows up as one sparse disc image.
i have found that when i can mount it manually but the files are not usable and when i mount it with time machine the history does not appear.

Go to System Preferences - Sharing and change the computer name there. You can also, optionally, change the name of your hard drive to further clarify the origin of your backups. Click once on the "Macintosh HD" on your desktop, then click its name to allow you to edit it.

  • My iMac's computer name keeps changing automatically after Yosemite upgrade

This started happening once I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite. It will add numbers to the name of my iMac.
Example: It starts off as say "My iMac"
Then a half day later, it changes to "My iMac (2)"
Then the next day it will be "My iMac (3)"
And if I open the Finder window, it will show "My iMac" and "My iMac (2)" under "Shared" but if you click on them, nothing happens.
When I go to System Preferences > Sharing the computer name will have the number there "My iMac (3)" and say it can be found as MyiMac-3.local
If I change it back to just "My iMac", the number process starts all over again. I even tried naming the iMac something it was never named before and the same process occurs with the adding of the numbers.
Anyone know how I can fix this?

Have had the same issue with an iMac and MacBook Pro, both with Yosemite (MacBook upgraded from the Yosemite public beta). Both previously had Mavericks, and at one time or another would have had both Ethernet cable and Wifi on. This issue has only occurred since the upgrade to Yosemite. I do not use iCloud, so I believe that may be irrelevant and merely coincidental.
The solution provided by an Apple Care rep seems to have resolved the issue. Has stuck now on both machines for the last few hours. Time will tell for certain, but here's what we did:
    - in System Preferences > Sharing, remove the (2) [or whatever is extra; mine was iMac (2), so I removed the (2)
    - exit Preferences
    - shutdown
    - restart machine in Recovery mode (machine off, press and hold Command + R, power on, when Apple logo appears release keys)
    - may take a few minutes to boot (depends on machine generation/speed, RAM and such)
    - open Disk Utility
    - select the OS disk (mine was Macintosh HD; selected the 'indented' item)
    - run Verify Disk Permissions
    - when finished run Repair Disk Permissions
    - restart
On the MacBook I tried turning on Wifi and so far so good.
    Banish the deux!

  • My Computer Name Keeps Changing

I system preferences sharing where you go to set your computer name I am noticing that mine says "Rob's iMac (3)" instead of "Rob's iMac".   My network hasn't changed, haven't added or removed anything.   I am using an airport extreme.    One thing I remember is that every once in awhile I will get an odd prompt trying to connect to the wi fi related to this but I can't remember.    But the annoying thing right now is that the OS will not allow me to go back and take that "(3)" off.     Does it have anything to do with VMware and Windows 7 running on my system?     It almost seems like the airport extreme thinks there are now three iMacs on the network......... thx in advance....

I have exactly the same problem. There is one Mac on my network, WiFi is off on the Mac, the other machines are Windows 7 computers. The renames are completely random, sometimes even after waking from sleep. It's Lion that doesn't keep track and it's annoying the **** out of me.
My trusty Snow Leopard white iMac blew itself up (literally) two weeks ago so I was forced onto Lion. It's the worst OS X I've ever used - never had to google so often for workarounds and fixes (scrolling direction, hidden user Library, problems with Mail, keyboard mapping, the list goes on and on...)
If Mountain Lion fixes the renaming issue it might be worth the upgrade.

  • MacBook Computer Name Keeps Changing

Recently my Mac computer name keeps changing. It's the normal name, but with a number at the end that keeps incrementing. How can I stop this?
I'm not sure if it's something to do with the fact I had a partition for the public OS X Yosemite, which I have now deleted.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

I was having the same problem for awhile, even contacted support so they could screen share and see what I meant.
What I ended up doing was correcting the name and then unchecking all the boxes in Sharing.  Open up Airport Utility and reset the router (basically I changed my password only because that's the easiest way to make it update).  Go back into Sharing and recheck the sharing options that you had previously.  Viola!
So far it's been a week now and my computer name has not changed.  Hope this helps

  • Computer name keeps changing by integer Name (2)

My 2011 i7 iMac running 10.7.4, regularly changes the computer name. Always when rewaking it from sleep, the "Name" becomes "Name (2)". It claims "the name is already in use on this network". And this assertion is most certainly false. A quick search informs me this issue has existed since 10.5.8; I am experiencing it on 10.7.4 so I have to assume the cause has not been investigated or not found (or both).
Since the issue seems linked to Shared Resources I am going to try not sharing anything from this iMac from now going forward to see if this ends the behavior.
Whats really iritating about this is that the System Preferences > Sharing panel has a Lock on it that is *supposed* lockout changes to the settings under it. But the system is bybassing that lock mark and changing something without asking. Not okay.

I have been having the same problem ever since updating to 10.7.4.  I have read of other people having this problem too, without resolution, so I presume it to be an Apple bug that will get ironed out in the next update.
    Hope this helps
