Sharing Contact Details across a mixed network

Ok simple question - I have a small network of 5 computers (3 windows 2 Macs) what is the best way of sharing a database of contact details (i.e. customer database) across all these machines?
I would like it to be stored in one place so that changes to the contacts are reflected on all machines.
Any ideas?

If all Macs are connected by cable to the LAN you can do what you want. Put the library on an external HD formatted for OS X Extended (journaled) and set the Ownership to be ignored.

Setup an account on the Mac that the EHD is connected to so all can log in to that account and access the EHD. Remember, *only one person can use the library at a time and you should not access the library wirelessly* as Terrence warned against. That's a recipe for disaster.

  • Sharing a disk on a mixed network

I'm contemplating getting an Airport Extreme N in larger part so that I can share a hard drive over my network. The network is mixed. There are two PCs, one which has a wireless card, probably 802.11g and one that's wired, two Macs that will ony support 802.11g, one Mac that is hard wired to the network and one Mac that will support 802.11n.
So, my question, which was not answered by any of the support documents I located is Will I be able to share a hard disk in this kind of set up?
I believe that my household (yeah, this is my house) now has a greater number of computers than people.

Based on your hardware descriptions, the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) should be able to accomodate all of your equipment. It's three LAN ports would be used for the wired PC & Mac (with one left over), and it's wireless, running in 802.11n (b/g-compatible mode) should handle the mix of wireless clients. The one thing to note for wireless to operate at pure 802.11n speeds, ALL wireless devices must be 802.11n.
Similiarly, both Windows & Macs can access USB-attached hard drives that are formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305038 & http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/sharing.html)

  • Sharing mail foders across a large network

Is it possible in Tiger to share mail folders across a network?
If I create a mail folder called Project, say, on my machine, and there are
10 people in the team, all networked, is it possible to share my Project mail folder so that any team member can access the project email folder?
Similarly, can I access a folder they have set up?
    Thanks.

  • Sharing Contact details by text message

If I click on "share" under one of my Contacts to send a message with that person's details to another phone, does it only work with iPhones? I've tried sending it to a Samsung Galaxy and the recipient "can't open the attachment".

You cannot send contact info via SMS at this time.

I would love to find a way to share a large (around 100 Gb) iPhoto Library across multiple Macs in my home network.
Is there a way to do this that is secure (backing up the library!) en reasonably fast? Or is this a 'new feature request'

  • HT5824 Managing contact details across various devices

I´m having trouble transferring my contacts (used to be in Exchange Account), that are in my iphone (and also backed up in a PST file) to a "new" environment that will keep information synched and up to date in all devices and in the cloud. Any suggestions?
    - My most up to date contacts are on iphone 5s
    - Laptop is MacBook Air
    - OUTLOOK is my preferred email program
    - I also use iPad on the road

Open the contacts app and tap Groups.  What account do the former exchange account contacts belong to?
Also go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section).  Do you have the Default Account setting there, and if so, what is selected as your default account?

  • Sharing Contact List Across Family Plan

My wife and I share a plan. She went to the trouble of updating my phone with the contact list from her old phone by hand. I found I could keep this up-do-date as part of my verizon account. I registered and updated the contact list from my phone to the verizon account. I notice when I login I can choose between both our phone numbers on the verizon account.  Is there anyway to use this same list to update my wife's phone. We do want to have the same set of contacts on both phones.
    Help
    Thanks

Each phone number has it's own Backup Assistant account log in - I would venture to say most folks on family share plans DON'T need or want to share contact lists.  (My husband's, mine, and our kids' are all very different - a few common people but most are not the same at all).
With the ability to import AND export contact lists now available, though, you can take a few steps to ensure that your contact lists are the same to begin with.  However, with the auto back up and updates, if either of you makes changes on your phone, it will update your own BA, not both.  Backup Assistant accounts ARE separate.
You need to set up BA by registering each phone number, and installing and running BA on each phone.  You can then EXPORT the contact list you want both phones to have, and IMPORT it when logged in with the other phone.  That will sync the two at that moment.  If neither of you makes any changes, they will stay the same.
Also, when you "choose between the two numbers" - you are logged in as the primary number, and viewing information for the second line, but you are NOT logged in with the second number.  You'll need to register for a login and password for that number separately.

  • Newly added contacts suddenly become strangers (not shared their details with you)

A newly added contact suddenly disappears after a few minutes, it's still present in my contact list, but with the gray question mark and "this person has not shared their details with you", even though in the conversation itself it says "<friend> has shared contact details with <myself>". On the other side, it seems like none of this is happening and my friend can still see my status as if I was their contact (which I am). After re-sending the contact request multiple times (which is instantly accepted, it doesn't seem to even display on my friend's side, he just instantly becomes my contact again) it seems to have sorted itself out and that person is now in my contacts, hopefully for good. Now yesterday I added a new contact and the same thing happens, she appears as a stranger about 10 minutes after accepting my contact request, even though it seemed fine on the mobile app while she was online, but now even mobile considers her as not part of my contacts, and also her profile picture isn't displaying on the mobile app. Note : there is already a thread about this in the Skype for Windows Desktop section, however since this problem has clearly nothing to do with the client you're using and is related to the platform/whatever software runs on Microsoft's servers, I'm reposting this here. Skype for Windows Desktop version 6.20.0.104 running on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, and Skype for iPhone version "idon'tknowwhat because there's no "about" page apparently" running on iOS 8.0.2, iPhone 5S. My Skype account isn't linked with any Facebook nor Microsoft account (it was, but it's been unlinked about two months ago). To avoid this thread the same fate as the linked one, that is becoming polluted by some smart-ass that believes everything is caused by a virus, corruption of the Skype folder in AppData or compromised account, let me state this right now : my password was changed, the account isn't compromised (checked with /showplaces and the only logged in clients are my desktop and my iPhone) and the AppData folder was already deleted, without success (it made things worse my making my entire contact list disappear for 24h, fortunately they slowly came back one by one), so if you have nothing to say please refrain from copy/pasting such useless answers.

Hi, I hope someone can help me.  I have a similar problem to Andre (from original post a week ago below).  I only use Skype to communicate with a personal friend who has recently been posted abroad (Europe) to work.  I always sign in via my Microsoft account and have done since Microsoft & Skype merged and I linked the two together.  My contact does the same.  As my accounts are linked, my friend shows up in my contacts both as a Skype contact and also a Messenger contact.  When we communicate, it is normally always via our Skype names although I can see them online under both names.  On Friday night however, they came online but shortly afterwards, I noticed that the grey question mark had appeared next to their Skype name saying 'Person has not shared their contact details with you'.  They are still showing up ok under their Messenger name as it appears as offline, so I have been a bit confused why this has happened and I haven't yet had a chance to speak to my friend to ask them.  I decided to look at the Skype help forum and came across this post by Andre who has had a similar problem, although he says it has happened with a couple of new contacts but his problem has now been resolved.  I was hoping someone could help me and give me some advice as to what I should do now.  I have checked my computer and have the latest Skype version for desktop installed.  I am using Internet Explorer 11; Windows 7 Home version - 64 bit.  I also have the Skype app on my android smartphone which has the most recent updated version.  I don't really use Skype on my phone although I did log-in on late Friday afternoon but didn't stay on long before I signed out.  I have read in posts in the past about corrupted files etc on Skype but because I don't know much about these things,  I don't like to mess about with the programs that are installed on my computer because I don't know what I'm doing. The person who responded to Andre's query was a staff moderator called Aimi, who had previously told him to send the name of the contact in question who had the grey question mark appear beside them.  I would be very grateful if someone could help me with this problem as I would like it sorted out as soon as possible please. Thanks, Linda F. AndréDaniel wrote:A newly added contact suddenly disappears after a few minutes, it's still present in my contact list, but with the gray question mark and "this person has not shared their details with you", even though in the conversation itself it says "<friend> has shared contact details with <myself>". On the other side, it seems like none of this is happening and my friend can still see my status as if I was their contact (which I am). • Unable to share Contact details

    Hello,
I seem to behaving some issues with sharing contact details. When someone tries to send me their contact details skype doens't alert me. It doesn't even give me the window to accept, I get nothing. I think this also ties into some other bizzare issues i've been having with skype:
My "Home" is empty and gives me the "Your contacts have not been very active recently..." message even though my contacts have been updating their statuses and changing display pictures. Furthermore Skype doesn't show me my contacts updated screennames until I add a nickname for them, and delete that nickname.
Any ideas on how to fix this? It seems to be happening on my andriod phone too.

I am using the latest version of IE and I see "Skype Home - Welcome
Find your friends and say hello". I noticed that "https://apps.skype.com/home/" was in the blocked sites because my little brother wanted Ads to be removed, I unblocked it and now the skype home tab works again.
However i'm still having issues with the contacts, and I can't tell yet if this fixed the nickname issue. Will post again as soon as I find out.

  • Home sharing across two wifi networks?

I have two wifi networks in my home and each is attached to its own cable modem. Can home sharing be used across both networks so I can see my Apple TV and my iTunes library at the same time in the remote app? Thus far, I have only been able to access them separately by switching wifi networks on my iPhone. All my devices are set up with the same Apple ID. My main computer is running Windows 7 and it is connected to network #1 via LAN and network #2 via wireless. All my speakers including Apple TV show up in the Airplay menu of iTunes. Apple TV is connected to network #2 solely for the reason that the signal is stronger.
Any ideas out there? This has been frustrating the heck out of me. Thanks in advance!

  • Print Sharing across a wireless network.

    Hello fellow Macsters,
I am trying to share my HP printer across my wireless network. here is my network setup. I have a wireless network throughout my house. an iMac 20'' desklamp without an airport card is connected to a belkin router via an ethernet cord. That router creates my wireless network, allowing my iBook G4 to conenct to it wirelessly. The wireless signal is continued by an AX in WDS bridge mode, on the second floor of my house. Currently, I can share the printer connected to the iMac, but only when the iMac is on. I would like to be able to share it without leaving the computer on. I know there are multiple ways to do it, but do not know the specifics of them. Could somebody please tell me what they are. Thank you very much.

Well if its a non network HP printer it will have to be a AEBS. HP dosent make network operable drivers for thier non-network ready printers s and thos eprinters tend to only be PCL and not PostSCript. Since all the network print protocols on the mac rely on PS youre out of liuck unless its connected directly to MAC hardware.
If youre geeky and feeling ambitious you can probably finde a driver/ppd withh the support you need on linuxprinting.org but good luck trying to get it to work properly. I tried without success for a week to get our HP3500CLat work to work over any network protocol i could get my hands on with no luck. if you (or anyone else reading this) fares better please let me know...

If you want to sync your information across multiple devices and computers, you should use one or more of these methods. • KB2687455 (SP2 for Office 2010) Breaks Outlook Searches of Shared Contacts/Calendars

Hello, everyone! I would love to know if anyone else is experiencing these issues.
I am an IT Network Technician for several clients that have had issues searching in shared contacts and/or calendars in Outlook 2010. These users are using Office 2010 in Citrix/Remote Desktop Services environments. When these servers automatically
download and install KB2687455, the users can no longer perform searches in shared contacts/calendars. They receive an error stating, "The requested Upon removing this update, and having the user close and re-open Outlook, the search functionality is
restored. Surprisingly, a reboot is not required to restore searching.
Is Microsoft aware of this issue? If so, what is being done to correct it? If not, is anyone else experiencing similar symptoms?
Our firm has already observed similar failure of the search functionality in Outlook 2010 due to the installation of another Windows Update, KB2956128. The issues with that update are already well-documented, based on a preliminary Google search,
and we have blocked the installation of that update, where possible, until we are informed of a fix for it from Microsoft. Any information on the repair of that update would also be much appreciated.

    Hi,
Both KB2956128 and KB2956203 seem to cause this issue to some of our users, as you mentioned KB2956128, have you checked KB2956203? If you have installed this KB, uninstall it to check the result.
If it is KB2956203, we have been aware of some issues caused by the recent updates, and would like to collect more information for further investigation.
Can you guys share your detailed system info? Also, if you have any log files about the issue, kindly share with us by sending them to this email account:

  • Mixed network

    Hello
I wonder if the good and the great here would mind giving a little bit of advice.
Where is it at when it comes to NAS or shared drives on a mixed network. At home we have PCs mostly but I have just bought a new MBP which I think is fantastic.
I would like to use Time Machine to back it up and ideally do that over WiFi to a NAS or cheap server. I know that I have to use a Mac formatted drive to use Time Machine but is there any way to set this up so that PCs can use the NAS.
Alternatively is there a way to let the PCs see a folder on my MBP and back up to that and then from the MBP to a NAS.
Finally any suggestions of a suitable NAS. I want it headless and able to connect over WiFi because I want to hide it away in a loft or something to avoid being robbed.
    Thanks
    R

As I suggested there are some NAS systems compatible with AFP shares that could work for you, but not with TM. There are many excellent backup utility options that work across networks:
    Backup Software Recommendations
My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
    11. Apple Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility.
