Sharing display and internet connection between a 13inch Mac Book and G4

Does anyone know whether it is possible to connect a Mac Book and a G4 Powermac with an ethernet cable and then hook them both up to the same display and ethernet internet connection?

Usually you use a router to share an internet connection and to make a local network between the computers over Ethernet or WiFi. I think it is possible to directly connect the computers without a router, but you might have to use a cross-over cable, I'm not sure how to set up a direct connection. Using a wireless router with wired ports would allow you the flexibility of using the MacBook wirelessly and the PowerMac with a wired connection. I have an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, and it was pretty easy to set up, it plugs into my cable modem to share the internet connection.
They make hardware devices that allow you to share a docking station between more than one computer, called a KVM switch, so you can have one keyboard, video display, and mouse and switch between two active computers.
Alternately, using the network connection, you can use Chicken of the VNC, which is a virtual network computer, this opens a window, or full-screen mode, of a computer so you can operate it from another computer.

You can also control a PC from the Mac using Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection.

Some monitors have multiple inputs, so you wouldn't need to use a KVM switch, if for example your monitor has both DVI and VGA inputs, the front panel can select the source, so you could use a DVI adapter for the MacBook and a VGA for the PowerMac. You could still use the KM portion of a KVM switch if you wanted to use a single full-size keyboard and mouse with both computers.

Not much you can do.  You overwrote your current data with older data when you restored the phone from that backup.  Your data's gone.

  • Firewire 400/800 and Iomega connectivity in the Latest Mac Book Pro?

    Hi,
I am awiting my Mac Book Pro to arrive. I have no experince with a Mac Book Pro.
I have a Mac version Iomega External Portable Hard Drive. This Iomega has USB2, Firewire 400 & Firewire 800 connectivity.
I do not think Firewire 400 or Firewire 800 cable came with my Iomega.
Is this Iomega connectable through Firewire 400 or Firewire 800 to a latest Mac Book pro? If so do I connect it to the Thunderbult port in my Mac Book Pro?
Is there especial cable avaiable for these purposes?
    Regardsa

Connection is with the FW800 port using a FW800 to FW800
cable.  The ones I've purchase came with USB and FW800
cables.  The Thunderbolt port is only for Thunderbolt devices
or some displays via a Display Port adapter.
If for some reason you no longer have any cables, FW800 cables
are readily available either online or at any store that handles
Apple computers, and some that don't.

  • Internet Dropouts and Internet Connection Trouble; POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Here is something that might help
I have had problems with this on my old G5, Intel Macbook, and More Recently my Mac Pro (past 4 years I have airport trouble)
I spent hours trouble shooting, the thing that ends up working for me three times so far has solved my problem
Here is a step by step instruction of what I did (continue anyway if you are not receiving the same circumstances/results)
Remember this is also a diagnostic method for yourself to see what is working and what is not so you can solve the problem. Also I still get network drop outs and sometimes internet performance decrease but a lot less frequently by performing the steps bellow. If your problem persists then I might be able to trouble shoot with you. In no way this method will be successful and your problem may become worse so use discretion when applying the steps below
1)Check "Console" to see whether broadcast is being dropped (utilities folder)
2)Make sure your problem persists with all other applications not running (including your virus software)
3)Reset Safari and continue loading to see if network performance is still hanging up
4)If slow loading persists/airport drops shut down computer and boot into safe mode by holding shift key (this empties cache stuff and does a few repairs)
5)Load Safari and see if slow loading persists (while in safe mode)
6)Go to disk utility and repair disk first (or verify)
7)If disk comes clean then precede to repair permissions, there are many errors that show up that are nothing to worry about "ACL found in different place" is one of them.
8)Shut down, (do not restart and wait for 10 sec, I have no idea why this happens and it does not make sense to me but I have restarted and ended up with some other problems)
9)Turn on computer and proceed to disk utility again (do not worry about airport, do not touch yet
10)Verify disk again (remember not in safe mode)
11)Repair permissions once again (different things are loaded into the permission system; plugins ect.)
    12)Shut down computer again
13)Turn on computer and proceed to open network preferences and remove airport service (make sure your changes are applied)
    14)Open key chain access
15)Delete your network password (if it exists) in "login" and in "system"
    16)Shut down computer once again
17)Reapply all network configurations in the network preferences panel
18)Shut down computer once again and turn on
19)Check airport performance over the next 30 min or so by clicking links actively and waiting
20)If problem persists you may have corrupted files somewhere and may have to delete some preference files and perform the method above once again (to be safe I suggest running the disk utility test once again)
note: for some reason Leopard still remembers old network information even after deleting it. you need to find a way to keep leopard from using old preferences (it can be any of them). If all thus fails trash your router settings (on your router, factory defaults) and perform the steps above once again)
Please report abnormal occurrences like the "self assign ip address problem in network preferences" so we can narrow down where problems are mostly occurring"

I quote from the System Preferences Help:
If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can share its Internet connection with other computers on your local network.
For example, if your computer is connected to the Internet using a DSL modem and has an AirPort Card installed, you can share the DSL connection with other AirPort-equipped computers.
On Windows computers, sharing your Internet connection is sometimes referred to as a “network bridge” or “bridging your network.”
    To set up Internet sharing:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing.
    Select Internet Sharing.
Choose the Internet connection you want to share from the “Share your connection from” pop-up menu. For example, if you’re connected to the Internet over Ethernet, choose Ethernet.
Select how you want to share your Internet connection in the “To computers using” list. For example, if you want to share your Internet connection over AirPort, select AirPort. If you share your Internet connection using AirPort, click AirPort Options and give your network a name and password.

  • Client dns and internet connection

    Hi,
Running 10.5.5 Server with basic DNS for inter clients to access AFP/SMB and Wiki services via Open Directory. IP address is 192.168.1.10
Clients currently receive internet via DHCP from a router and Network preferences autofills DNS and search domains with router address 192.168.1.1 and RP614v4 respectively.
If I add the server IP and search domain, I can't see the server via DNS name unless I reverse the order in the fields (192.168.1.10 and ######.private). However this turns the internet connection to snail pace.
How can I get the DNS to work for both the internal server and internet connection?
    Thanks,
    Joel.

If your DNS server is running correctly, there's no reason why it should resolve any slower than the router. The fact you're mentioning it implies that the delay is significant so I'll guess that your clients are requesting an address from your server, but that's timing out so they're falling back to the router before proceeding.
You should check your DNS server to make sure it's set to be recursive (so it answers queries for non-local domains, too). That way the clients can get all lookups from your server and you should be good to go.

I have forgotten my Password to be able to connect between my desktop Mac and Mac Book on my home network. How can I recover the password or change it?

The password used to log in to a user account remotely is the same as you would use to log into it locally. You can also use your Apple ID, so try that.
To change your login password read OS X Mavericks: Reset a login password

  • When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.

When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.  It used to crash when I went to the iTunes store but, after installing the newest version of iTunes it crashes if there is an internet connection.  I can turn off my internet access and then run the software but, once I try the iTunes store again it crashes.  It does not give an error message as to why its doing this.  Just says it encountered a problem.  I cannot do anything with my iPad or iPod without this working.  Its extremely frustrating.
I have also contacted Apple several times and they give me links to other's problems but, none have worked to fix this.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

  • Airport and internet connection

Can anyone help me with this? My internet connection has been a problem off and on for years but now, its unbearable. I have a wireless setup. For years I used my airport extreme base station to hook up to the internet. I would lose the connection and have to reboot the base station to get the internet signal back. Finally, I used my airport express as the base station and the problem disappeared for awhile but eventually, I had the same problem. My internet provider is Time Warner. I exchanged the modem and the cable. It was fine for awhile but here I am again! I just bought a new router, Belkin N Wireless Router and things seemed to be looking up but no! The signal is strong in one room but as I move to my living room which isn't that far (I live in a NYC apt) the signal fades out! This is maddening! Anyone got any suggestions on what is going on? HELP!

there are a lot of things that can affect a wireless signal. are there a lot of wifi's in your building? if so, they might be using the same wireless channel, which will cause interference, which you will see as the fading out.
there could also be something in the walls that is interfering with your wifi.
right after you reboot your wifi, is the signal good through out your apartment? if so, that would suggest to me that you're getting some kind of interference. do a google search for 'wifi locator's' for your operating system and find one that will list what channel each wifi is on. look through the list to see what everyone is using, and then pick one that is not in use by the others. the best channels to use are 1, 6 or 11.
you will also have to go into your router and do some advanced configuration, but the manual and their tech support should be able to help you with it.

  • Video and Internet Connection

So I bought this brand new Macbook Pro only two months ago, and already I'm experiencing issues with the video and Internet Connection. When I try to watch video, it plays for a few minutes, then completely stops, though it is buffered and loaded completely. It never starts replaying unless i refresh it, but then it happens again and again. Then for the internet connection, when im opening websites and everything, suddenly the it says "Sorry you are not connected to the internet" then after a few moments, it works, but this is very annoying. Websites also load very slowly. Is there anything I can do?

How many lines do you have on your wifi "fan" up at the top right of your computer and how far are you from the router? sometimes things like that happen when I sit a little too far from our wifi hub. If I show a good set of bars I have good internet flow etc. if just a single bar or barely, it gets dodgy.

  • Mail and Internet Connection conflict

I have a VPN PPTP connection running. Most of my other Mac internet apps run fine (Safari, Fetch), for that matter Mail can read new emails. The problem is that Mail won't send mail until I close the VPN connection. I figure this is a port conflict, Mail output and Internet Connection using the same ports, is there a way to change the port either is using? If so, any idea what I should change it to?

Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you.

  • Wireless connection between D-Link WiFi router and Time capsule stopped working

We have an ISP provided D-Link wireless router (DIR-615) to which we wirelessly connected our 2Tb Time Capsule for back up and to connect a USB printer to out network. This worked perfectly for 3 1/2 years, until about a month ago, when the time capsule suddenly decided to go "off line". ie we could no longer access it or the printer via our wireless network. We had changed nothing - just one day it stopped working.
We tried to get it back online with no success. As the 2Tb Time Capsule was almost 7 years old and had had some HDD issues in the passed, we figured it had got old and died and that it was time to replace it; so we bought a new 3Tb Time Capsule, thinking this would get everything back to normal.
However much as we tried, we were also unable to get the new 3Tb Time Capsule to connect wirelessly to the D-Link wireless router. The Airport Utility did not show the D-Link wireless router or its wireless network, although we were (and are) able to see it in Systems Preferences>Networks from all our multiple devises. This in itself seemed odd. No matter what we tried, the Airport Utility would not find the D-Link wireless router and hence we could not add the 3Tb Time Capsule to the existing wireless network.
At the end of the day we got fed up with trying to add the 3Tb Time Capsule to the D-Link wireless network, and connected it via a LAN cable to the D-Link router instead. We then set it up as its own network. Worked gerat. Having done that we thought maybe the old 2Tb Time Capsule might not have been the problem after all, so we tried extending our new 3Tb Time Capsule wireless network using the 2Tb Time Capsule wirelessly. This worked perfectly! And we are now almost back to what we wanted.
So although we have a work around, this means now have 2 separate wireless networks as opposed to the original single wireless network where everything talked to everything else.
Can anyone shed any light on any of the following:-
    1. Why the original wireless network connection between the D-Link router and the 2Tb Time Capsule just stopped working? Was there some software change from Apple that "decided" D-Link wireless routers were no longer secure; and therefore the TCs could no longer connect to them?
    2. Why it was not possible to extend the existing D-Link wireless network using the the new 3Tb Time Capsule?
    3. Is there is anyway that we can get back to a single wireless network based around the D-Link wireless router as the primary router connecting to the modem, where the 2 Time Capsules connect as "wireless satellite base stations"?

A firmware update to the TC came along and you agreed to it without perhaps even noticing.. it then smashed your setup because Apple do not recommend the setup you were using and it is very poor.
    2. Why it was not possible to extend the existing D-Link wireless network using the the new 3Tb Time Capsule?
Because it is such a poor setup that Apple have taken away your ability to choose it unless you know exactly what you are doing.
    3. Is there is anyway that we can get back to a single wireless network based around the D-Link wireless router as the primary router connecting to the modem, where the 2 Time Capsules connect as "wireless satellite base stations"?
Yes, this I can help you with.
I have several ways around the problem.. but the first one is.. why use the DIR-615 at all.. it is not a modem.. it is a very ordinary bottom end, poor single band slow wireless router.
Why don't you simply remove the DIR-615 from the network completely.. plug whatever it is the ISP supplies you.. an ethernet connection from whatever that modem is you mentioned into the WAN port of the Time Capsule. And use the TC in some router mode.. same as the DIR-615 was setup.. dhcp or pppoe or whatever.. I doubt the TC cannot match it.
If you have issues please post a few screenshots from the DIR-615 to show how it is setup from the WAN side.. and as long as you are given the username and password or whatever the ISP uses to authenticate then chuck out the DIR-615.
Tell me if that is a goer.. if not we can work out a few other methods..
eg. Simply turn off the wireless in the DIR-615. It is poor cf the TC and there is no need for it.. with the TC in bridge only use the TC for wireless as well as wireless extend with your old TC.
Or setup roaming network where everything uses the same SSID.
Then you will have one wireless network. And it won't matter what as long as it connects.. although IMHO this is not right as the TC is such a superior router now you are wasting your new TC.
