Sharing docs with PC people

Hi, on my network at my school I have silly little PC people who complain that when I open a file on the network (like a document file) that my Mac for some reason automatically makes it READ ONLY and they are not able to change anything afterwards. The only workaround is if I use Neo Office or Open Office, then it's ok. Word 2008 (or 2004 as well) seems to change the file so that only I can alter it. Does anybody know why that is?
Also, these PC people are upset that every time I go into a folder I drop these "_DS store" files (to which I reply that every time PC people go into my files they drop the stupid "thumbs" file in a folder)...is it possible for Macs NOT to leave these files and/or to get PC's not to drop these "thumbs" files on my mac when we share? I hope this makes sense to someone!
Thanks!

Anything that begins with a period in Unix (which OS X is built on top of) is automatically invisible. That's why you don't see them, but Windows users do.
There is a .DS_Store file in virtually every folder on your drives. They keep track of that folder's window position, size, listing option and a few other things. It doesn't hurt anything to remove them, other than every window on your desktop will revert to a default state, so no folders will open where you last left them.
It's fruitless to remove them though since the OS will once again build one for every folder you open. Except for network drives if you follow the instructions in the link. Those folders will always open in OS X's default size, position and listing no matter how you last left it.
There are a few ways to show invisible items on your Mac, but there really isn't anything you should be getting at that easily. One way is to download OnyX. It has an option to turn visibility on for every file on the drive. It can also be done from the Terminal, but I don't know the command off the top of my head.

  • Sharing content with iCloud

    Not an iCloud user yet but I was wondering that how do I share content with my friends with iCloud? Can I restrict their access to my files somehow? I would only like to share part of my content.

    Thanks. I already use Dropbox at work with my work-PC. I was just wondering iCloud for purely personal use since I'm using mac at home. I have no real need to share content with myself but sharing content with other people would seem more useful to me. I'm lazy so I would like to have just one unified cloudservice that would contain all my iTunes purchases and personal files. And since the content is already on cloud then why not share it with my friends. I think it would be quite easy to manage access rights between different Apple ID's. I think this feature would add value to iCloud because right now I am able to sync content between different devices quite easily even without iCloud so it seems a bit useless to me.

    Are my photos in photo stream when the option of shared photo streams is on, are they shared with other people automatically?

    Your photos are not shared automatically. You must select photos and share them with others manually.

  • File Sharing Office Docs With Windows PCs

    I just upgraded my work computer, 24" iMac (pre-aluminum), to Leopard. At first I was thrilled to see the new file-sharing options in Leopard, as my computer has many company files shared. Before I was using a program called "Sharepoints" to share the files. That program does not work on Leopard.
    Unfortunately, shortly after setting up the shared directory, I began getting complaints that people could not access the files in the shared folder. Here's what was happening:
    They can get into the directory, and even open up the files (in this case it is excel files).
    They can edit them, but when they save them they get the following error:
    "The document was saved successfully, but Excel cannot re-open it because of a sharing violation. Please close the document and try to open it again."
    But they cannot open it again.
    When they try to open it again they get the following error: "Excel cannot access 'file.xls'. The document may be read-only or encrypted."
    I can open and edit the document just fine on my iMac.
    What I have noticed is that it appears to change some permissions of that file when they save it, but only on my username it now says "Custom" instead of "Read/Write". If I go to the parent folder, change the permissions back to what they were before, and apply changes to all enclosed items, they can open the file again and save it once (just like above).
    What's the problem? We really need these files shared.

    I just submitted an official bug report to Apple which I will reproduce below. I hope this helps someone somewhere.
    Summary:
    After upgrading (erase and install) my 24" non-aluminum iMac to Leopard, I am unable to share files with other people on the business network. The main culprit appears to be MS Office files.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1) Choose the folder I want to share in System Preferences > Sharing > Folders.
    2) Apply the appropriate permissions to the folder: (Me) -> Read & Write; owner -> Read & Write; staff -> Read & Write; everyone -> Read & Write;
    3) Turn on SMB sharing and check the appropriate accounts.
    4) Attempt to access an Excel file with Office from a networked Windows PC.
    Expected Results:
    Sharing should be normal. Other computers should be able to access, edit, and save all files as if the shared directory were on their own computer.
    Actual Results:
    5) File opens fine, edits normally, but upon save it issues this error:
    (Office 2002): "The document was saved successfully, but Excel cannot re-open it because of a sharing violation. Please close the document and try to open it again."
    (Office 2007): "Access denied. Contact your system administrator."
    6) Document will not reopen again and if you try it gives following error:
    (Office 2002): "Excel cannot access 'file.xls'. The document may be read-only or encrypted."
    (Office 2007): "Access denied. Contact your system administrator."
    Regression:
    When examining the permissions on my computer after someone else has accessed and saved it (with Office 2002), my permissions are changed to this: (Me) -> "Custom". If I change the permissions back to normal, recursively, the entire process can be repeated.
    If I create a rtf file and save it to the shared folder, it appears that it does not suffer from this problem. This leads me to think that perhaps it is an Office files only issue. Somehow Office is making changes to the permissions when it saves the file (in Office 2002), or does not understand the permissions (Office 2007). The problem exists with Excel, Word, and Powerpoint files.
    Notes:
    Related problem -- When I create an excel file from another Windows PC and put it in the shared directory on my Mac, I am unable to edit the file from my Mac. The permissions for the file are as follows: nobody -> Read & Write; staff -> Read only; everyone -> Read only.

  • Sharing/collaboration with external shareholders

    Hi,
    Our customer is interested in using sap mobile docs. Not only for internal people, but they would like to have some sharing possibilities with their external shareholders.
    As mentioned in the documentation, anonymous access with password protecten to a file (read access i suppose) as well as public write access to a published folder.
    What does that last option mean - just adding files to a shared folder, or also editing documents which are contained in that published folder?
    How far can you go with team collaboration for external shareholders?
    please elaborate this further,
    also what are the plans in the near future for this "external access" - feature?
    thanks
    Peter

    Hi,
    'public write access to a published folder' means adding files to share. From Web App, you can download the document, edit locally and update back to the same share. There is no editing possible within Web App.
    What scenario's are you looking forward for external access feature ?

  • Unable to share files when in a IM convo with multiple people Lync 2013

    Hello,
    I'm in the middle of a migration from lync server 2010 to lync server 2013. The users I have migrated over to lync 2013 are not able to send/share attachments when in a convo with multiple people.
    However, users can send/share files when IM'ing with individual people.
    I've been researching this issue for quite some time but still having a problem pinpointing  the issue.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Did the issue also happen between users who still in Lync server 2010 pool?
    Did the issue happen internal or external?
    Please double check if MCU on Lync 2013 FE server works well, when two participants are connected, the session is essentially peer-to-peer. When three or more participants are connected, the Sharing feature depends on the Front End Server Multi Point Control
    Unit (MCU) to provide the sharing stream to all parties.

  • How do I stop sharing mail with other users on my computer

    How do I stop sharing mail with other users on my Macbook pro?

    You may have to set up different user accounts in the computer if you wish to
    continue sharing the computer among other people, and only use the Mail app.
    Otherwise, if you use a webmail such as yahoo, gmail, or other, just use a browser
    and login each time; then there is no saving of your email to the computer as such.
    I've never used an email client software, nor had an ISP based email account. So
    my numerous computers have never downloaded email into software. No loss.
    But the answers do include setting up extra user accounts, not admin level, so the
    other users do not mess with the operating system; a standard account or just a
    guest account to use a browser to access web-based login email accounts, works.
    There are third-party email client for OS X, some are free applications, others are
    part of a larger browser product, such as SeaMonkey, & other Mozilla derivatives.
    They provide an email segment or client aspect; unlike Firefox that's a browser.
    Setup information should be within the Help viewer in the computer itself. Or by a
    simple search online, including the OS X version and any email client software
    your computer may have installed. Some browser software includes email client.
    Also there are several ways to go in this matter. I don't see questions, only answers.
    To learn how the Mail application works, if you want to import everyone's mail, then
    figure how to set up user accounts in the OS X. Or use web-mail & login by browser.
    Hopefully you can find the best solution for the unasked question.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Sharing Internet with xbox 360

    Hi, I have my Powerbook sharing internet with my Xbox 360. The connection works well and I am able to play games, but the NAT is listed as Moderate, with a Moderate NAT I am not able to do private voice chats with people. Does anyone know how I can get my NAT to Open? Also, I would like to share my media with my Xbox that is stored on a Windows XP computer. I followed all the steps given at www.xbox.com/pcsetup, but the Xbox still does not see the computer.
    Any help would be appreciated, Thnx

    If you are using Internet Sharing on your PowerBook you can forget trying to modify NAT settings or make nearly any other adjustments. There are very, very, very few options.
    If you want to make adjustments like that you need to get a real base station.

  • Does anyone here access a shared calendar with their Blackberry???

    I work for a very large company and I don't use my personal calendar. I use a calendar on a shared mailbox where several people enter appointments I need to attend. So far I have not been able to get a hold of anyone in our IT department who knows if it is possible to have my Blackberry synchronize with the shared calendar instead of my personal calendar. Surely other people must access a shared calendar with their BB. Doesn't seem like such an unusual thing to need to do. On my laptop I have access to both my personal and the shared calendar in Outlook. We run an Exchange Server and that is about the extent of info I have.

    If she has been syncing her phone with iTunes she could restore her phone to her last backup.  This will revert the settings and data on her phone to those contained in the backup (losing more recent information).  You should probably unshare your iCloud calendar with her before beginning to avoid the possiblility of her restored calendar replacing yours.  Then, before connecting her phone, open iTunes on the computer she syncs with, go to Preferences and on the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".  Next, connect her phone and when it appears in iTunes on the left sidebar right-click on it and select Restore from Backup, taking care to choose her backup to restore from and not yours.  If this restores her calendar she should give it a unique name before trying to share your iCloud calenadar again.
    If she syncs her calendar with a supported application on her computer (such as Outlook) another option would be to replace her iPhone calendar with the calendar on her computer by checking to do so on the Info tab of her iTunes sync settings (under Advanced>Replace information on this iPhone>check Calendars), apply and sync.

  • Printed a shared calendar with tasks

    I need to print my boss's daily calendar with the tasks listed on the right side, but although both his calendar are tasks are shared with me and I can view them, it won't let me print the calendar with the tasks from my outlook.  From other
    discussions I saw people recommending the Calendar Printing Assistant for Outlook, but it looks like that only works in Outlook 2007 and it won't work on my Outlook 2013.
    Is there any solution for this besides adding his mailbox to my computer?

    Hi
    As per the information and details provided by you, to print a shared calendar with tasks, please follow these steps: -
    In Outlook 2013, you need to ensure the print settings are correct first.
    Go to the
    Calendar; enter Day view by clicking the Day button above the Calendar.
    File tab >
    Print. In the list at the right ensure Daily Style is chosen under
    Settings. Then click the Print Options button just above the
    Settings list. In the Print Dialog box that opens, right in the middle is a button that says
    Page Setup; select that.
    Print setup dialog box that opens, in the
    Format tab, find the Options block on the lower left. In that block, the second item down is labeled
    Tasks. From the drop-down menu to the right of Tasks, choose
    To-Do list.
    In that same dialog box you probably want to clear the checkmark next
    “include: Notes area (blank)” to make more room for tasks.
    Now click
    OK first and then Print on the next screen. That’s it. The setting should be saved.
    I hope this information will be helpful for you.
    Thanks and regards

  • Linux JVM: How to load shared libraries with mutual/circular dependencies

    Hi,
    I am using the API
    System.loadLibrary(String name)
    to dynamically link shared libaries to Linux JVM.
    The shared libraries has complex circular symbol dependencies among them.
    I am not able to load shared libraries due to java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError.
    Any ideas on how a number of shared libraries with interdependent realtionships
    could be successfully linked in to the Linux JVM?
    Thanks,
    Soumen.
    Background
    ===========
    Successful execution of native code within Java virtual machine in a
    host platform, has two necessary prerequisites:
    Prerequisite 1: The native code is written to the JNI specification
    Prerequisite 2: The native code is dynamically linked with Java virtual
    machine.
    The second step is achieved via simple Java interface, System.loadLibrary:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/lang/System.html#loadLibrary(java.lang.String)
    However, implementation of this interface is highly platform dependent
    in regards to exact nature of dynamic linking process.
    Tests
    =====
    I made three shared libraries libfeatureA.so, libfeatureB.so and libfeatureC.so.
    Feature A and Feature B are mutually dependent on each other (i.e cicular
    dependencies between libfeatureA.so, libfeatureB.so) whereas libfeatureC.so
    has no external dependencies.
    Case 1
    I could link libfeatureC.so with java.
    Case 2
    Java failed to resolve circular dependency between libfeatureA.so, libfeatureB.so
    resulting in linking failure. There may be repackaging workarounds which I have
    not yet explored.
    Java source code
    ================
    class TestLoadLibrary
    static
    System.loadLibrary("featureB");
    System.loadLibrary("featureA");
    System.loadLibrary("featureB");
    public static void main(String[] args)
    System.out.println("In TestLoadLibrary.main()");
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /homes/soumen/work/event/featureB/libfeatureB.so.1.0: /homes/soumen/work/ev B.so.1.0: undefined symbol: featureA_func2
    at java.lang.ClassLoader$NativeLibrary.load(Native Method)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary0(ClassLoader.java:1737)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(ClassLoader.java:1662)
    at java.lang.Runtime.loadLibrary0(Runtime.java:817)
    at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(System.java:986)
    at TestLoadLibrary.<clinit>(TestLoadLibrary.java:5)

    The use of "dlopen() application programming" to achieve dynamic link closure works if there are
    no circular dependencies. For example, I have the following dependency:
    libfeatureD.so ==> libfeatureC.so
    Even if I call Java APIs in correct dependency order, i.e.,
    System.loadLibrary("featureC");
    System.loadLibrary("featureD");
    there would be java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError for call System.loadLibrary("featureD").
    Now, I have a JNI method implementation, which makes native API call in same dependency order:
    dlopen("libfeatureC.so", RTLD_LAZY|RTLD_GLOBAL);
    dlopen("libfeatureD.so", RTLD_LAZY|RTLD_GLOBAL);
    and now System.loadLibrary calls succeed. Note that I had to set environment
    variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH so that dlopen call would find libraries to load.
    In other words, from a JNI programming point of view, "linking chasm" has been crossed.
    I am looking at circular dependency issue, i.e.,
    libfeatureA.so <==> libfeatureB.so
    There may be library repackaging workaround.
    If anybody knows any workaround, please post.

  • XP to Win7 restore: does 'Shared Docs' become 'Public Folders'?

    Before upgrading from XP to Win7, I backed up my Catalog to an external HD.  With XP, I had my Catalog (all or mostly) in Shared Documents.  With Win7, Public Folders seems to have replaced Shared Docs.  When I restore the Catalog, will my PSE5 (or Win7) know to now put the photo folders in Public Folders?...Or will it try to create a new location called Shared Documents?   (On upgrading, I used Windows Easy Transfer to migrate all documents and settings, and it automatically put my photo folders in Public Folders on Win7.  I want to run a Restore to be sure my Catalog is right.  But I don't want to end up with two complete sets of photo folders in two different places on my hard drive.)

    If you use Time Machine, you can use Migration Assistant and migrate from Time Machine, while logged into your new account. That is one of the Migration Assistant +data source+ options.
    If you want to use a more manual approach, and I guess the way I would do it (so that I know what's going on), is through the Shared folder at
    <root level>/Users/Shared/
    Make a new folder called Transfer in the Shared folder. While logged in to your usual account, go through each of your +user home folder+ sub-folders (such as Documents and Music ), one at a time. So copy the contents of one of those sub-folders to the Transfer folder. Make sure you are copying (by holding down the Option key) instead of moving to keep your current user account intact until the new one is set up. You are basically duplicating, not moving.
    Turn on +Fast User Switching+ in System Preferences Accounts pane. Switch to the new user account. Take the contents of the Transfer folder and move it (this time move instead of copy ) to replace the files and folders in the equivalent +user home folder+ sub-folder of the new account. Repeat this procedure for each +user home folder+ sub-folder, going back and forth between the two account.
    The only folder you should avoid is the Library sub-folder, because that is probably where your networking problem actually resides. So for that one, selectively transfer personal data, such as the Mail folder; don't transfer the entire contents of the Library folder to the new account.
    Make sure your new account has access to all of your data (there are no permissions issues). You can keep the old account intact for a while to make sure everything is OK and present in the new account, and eventually delete the old account.
    Maybe that's not quite so "simple" (a bit repetitive); there may be a better way; I just wrote down how I would do it.
