Sharing Documentation

Is there a good description of sharing that addresses sharing between multiple users / accounts on the same computer and sharing between multiple computers?? I get some success in sharing between multiple users / accounts on the same computer and then I realize that I just don't understand sharing --- you put things in the Public Folder and in the Drop Box and mark things for sharing here and there, what is the big picture? If something is marked for sharing why can't that be enough without all the other stuff being done.
Thanks for your help
Andy

A user's public folder and drop box are able to be accessed by other users on the same computer just like you can access them over the network.
I think of the Shared folder more as a common library where, say, you keep a PDF of your TV's user guide, so all users can access it easily. I could keep my TV user guide in my /Users/jv/Public if I wanted to. And my wife could keep a PDF user guide of our Mac Pro computer in her Public folder, but it kind of makes more sense, to me, anyways, to leave them all in /Users/Shared, like a public library for the local neighborhood.
As far as access to Public folders and drop boxes, either over the network or locally on the same computer, the way I use them is if I want to make a document available to someone specific to download but not necessarily make it available to everyone with an account, I tell them that I put it there. More realistically, I would put it in their dropbox and let them know that I did. I liken these scenarios to a case of "targeted" sharing as opposed to "global" (all computer accounts) sharing.
So the way I use /Users/Shared and /Users/jv/Public and /Users/jv/Public/Drop Box, is that /Users/Shared is like the public library where anybody can go and check out a book or donate a book, and the ~/Public and ~/Public/Drop Box are more for targeting shares to a specific user. But that's just how I do business. I can't really comment on why Apple designed /Users/Shared folder and /Users/*/Public and /Users/*/Public/Drop Box the way that they did. I just tailor the way I use those folders around their access privileges.
If you want to share your /Users/Shared folder over the network, you can. Just go to System Preferences Sharing, highlight File Sharing, check the checkbox, add /Users/Shared to the list of shared folders, and then set up the owner/group/everyone access rights as desired over in the users list for that folder. Once you do, that will be one of your mounting points along with the other folders that show up as your choices when you are initiating an AFP remote mount -- a "wide area" public library versus just a local one, and versus "targeted sharing," if you will.

  • How do I remove a documentation set from Xcode?

I have documentation sets for Apple iPhone OS 2.0 and Apple iPhone OS 2.1. Each of these sets has iPhone OS Library and for the most part they are they same. Since I've decided to focus on targeting 2.1, is there any way I can remove the 2.0 documentation completely?
I can't find a way to do it from the documentation interface and in the Preferences, I can uncheck the documentation, but not delete it. However, unchecking it has no effect and when I restart Xcode, they are all checked again.
I am afraid to start deleting files from /Developer without knowing what I'm doing. I am also trying to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling everything.
    Thanks!

    I did try deleting
    /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/Documentation/DocSets/com.apple.adc.documentation.AppleiPhone2_0.iPhoneLibrary
but that didn't seem to remove it from Xcode. Then I found
    /Library/Developer/Shared/Documentation/DocSets/com.apple.adc.documentation.AppleiPhone2_0.iPhoneLibrary
The interesting thing is that the 2.0 documentation was "shared" here but not the 2.1 docs.
Removing the latter in the shared folders made it disappear from Xcode; removing the former had no effect. However its parent "folder" didn't disappear, but changed title slightly.
    Before
    Apple iPhone OS 2.1
    .. iPhone OS Library
    Now
    Apple iPhone OS
    .. <nothing here>
I'm now trying to figure out how to completelly remove that *Apple iPhone OS* heading as it contains nothing.

  • Documentation required on Output Designer

    Hi,
I am new to Adobe Output Designer development.
Can someone please help me by sharing documentations or some useful links on Adobe Output Designer?
    Thanks in Advance.

There is documentation for Output Designer in the installation directory where you installed it (e.g. C:\Program Files\Adobe\Output Designer 5.6\Documentation\). The DevelopingTemplates.pdf has Section 9 - Advanced Template Concepts and Appendix A - Intelligent Pagination Reference. These two explain the use of the Preamble in Adobe Output Designer forms.

  • TS2972 HOME SHARING WONT WORK WITH ITUNES 12

    I CANT ANYMORE
    My OS is Windows 7
    My iOS device: iPad 7.1.1
    My iTunes Version: 12
AND I've tried by all means to use home sharing with the Remote app, but it doesn't work at all.
    So please HELP ME

I have had this same problem since I upgraded to version 11 of iTunes.  I just found today that if you go into Preferences (under the Edit menu in Windows or under File on Mac OS) there is a Sharing tab that was turned off.  As soon as I checked the box in front of "Share my library on my local network" and the checkbox in front of "Home Sharing computers and devices update play counts" (I don't know if this second checkbox has to be checked or not) and restarted iTunes on each computer it began to work again.
I have no idea why Apple decided to have this turned off by default in version 11+ as I had it working fine prior to upgrading.  I also have no idea why Apple makes no mention of the need to go into the Preferences and make sure Sharing is enabled.  I have found no mention of it in any home sharing documentation...

  • Cannot set up home sharing

Hi, I am running iTunes 11.0.2.26 on a Windows 7 pc.  According to the Apple Home Sharing documentation I found, when I select File -> Home Sharing -> Turn on Home Sharing, and log in with my Apple ID, I should get an option to "Create a Home Share", but it does not show up.  Also, after enabling Home Sharing, if I go to File -> Home Sharing, I should also see the option to "Create a Home Share", but it is not there; instead, the only options available to me are
    Turn Off Home Sharing
Choose photos to share with Apple TV...
What do I need to do to create a home share?
    thanks,
    -eric

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
What exactly do you mean by home share.
Homesharing is already turned on if the only option you have is to turn it off.

  • IPhone SDK b3: How I fixed broken (blank) Research Assistant

Hello, I wanted to give this thread a new title as the original thread didn't indicate "iPhone SDK" in the title, and was in reference specifically to b2. The original thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6935634#6935634
Here are my findings. Research Assistant was working great for me until I upgraded my original (b1) iPhone SDK directly to b3, skipping b2 entirely. In reading posts in the aforementioned thread, this problem seems to occur when going from b1 -> b2, and I can surmise probably also from b1 -> b2 -> b3.
The comments in the aforementioned thread were useful in helping me reach a fixed state, for which I conclude a clean re-installation of b3 was necessary. Just doing steps 3) through 6), inclusive, _did not fix my problem._
    1) Uninstall iPhone b3 SDK
    sudo /developer/Libraray/uninstall-devtools --mode=all
    2) Reboot. Reinstall iPhone b3 SDK. Reboot.
    3) Launch Xcode. "Go to Xcode : Preferences... : Documentation"
    4) Click + to add the following entries (you might already see a bunch of grayed-out entires):
    /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/Documentation/DocSets
    /Developer/Documentation/DocSets
    /Library/Developer/Shared/Documentation/DocSets
    5) Exit and relaunch Xcode
    6) Go to "Project : Edit Project Settings" and click on "Rebuild Code Sense Index".
After doing all of this, my Research Assistant now works. I wanted to share this with the community in hopes that others learning the iPhone SDK aren't dissuaded by this issue, which can cause a very substantial barrier to learning its APIs quickly.

Thanks for all the tips. Unfortunately for me it still doesn't work
After trying for a day I give up ... bulky docs pane here I come.
Might be because I am using standard Xcode Dev Tools and not the iPhone SDK version of it, but I am still hoping Apple will release a fix for this annoying bug.

  • Family Share - Kids still have to login when picking app??

I'm in the process of changing the iPads for my children by enabling the Family Sharing option.  I've successfully setup two icloud accounts for them, and associated their appstore/itunes account with the new iCloud account.  They both show up under our list of Family members as children with Ask to Buy turned on.   How come when browsing the appstore to select an app on the kid's iPad, it still prompts them for their password to their iCloud account?  I would have assumed this would have immediately prompted the parent/organizer for their approval without the child being forced to put in the password?  This doesn't make sense to me?

I see what you mean.  The Family Sharing documentation emphasizes that they should choose a password and security questions that they can remember but at the same time you are encouraged to use a strong password and 2-step verification for your iCloud account.  You might want to share your feedback on this here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/icloud.html.  As I mentioned, I assume this is to ensure that when the ask to buy request comes to you that you know it was really from them and not just someone who found/stole their device.

  • Looking for good PDF Libraries

I am in the process of evaluating PDF libraries. My main objective is to be able to programmatically add interactive fields to a PDF document, and by doing so converting it into a fillable form. In addition to the regular text fields, check marks, etc. I need to add things like computed fields and JavaScripts.
So far, I have evaluated PDFlib and PDFNet.
What other PDF libraries are there out there?
Recommendations and comments are most welcome.
    -RFH

I would just like to point out that although the PDF library and the Acrobat API have shared documentation, you do have to be very careful when you read it. You need to be aware that a lot of API calls in it are not available to the PDF library (there are some that are specific to the library). Of particular interest to this thread is that the AF form field functions calls are not available to the library. There is a good example in the DLI documentation from Datalogics of creating form fields at the PD and Cos level, but you should also be aware that DLI is designed for creating new pdf files and not adding or manipulating existing ones (although you can be clever and merge stuff afterwards). I have been working with PDF files since version 1 of Acrobat and having attempted using other 3rd party libraries which are probably easier to develop with. I now use the PDF library regularly and I wouldn't use any other library for PDF manipulation because of compatibility issues with the files generated.

I am trying to transfer my itunes library from my windows to my new mac. • Printing/Sharing workflow documentation

I have been working a bit with Processes in WL Workshop 8.1sp2. The
printing of a relatively large workflow seems a bit kludgy. I remember back
in my Er/Win days I'd be able to scale the print, keep it from printing
blank pages, or fit the entire workflow on a page, etc. I know it's more of
a wf development tool than a modeling tool, but is there any way anyone out
there is exporting the XML into Visio or something so we could print these

Or is my throwback option only the ole' CTRL-ALT-PrintScreen?

  • Performance of Modbus using DSC Shared Variables

I'm fairly new at using Modbus with LabVIEW.  Out of the roughly dozen tools and API's that can be used, for one project I'm working on I decided to try using Shared Variables aliased to Modbus registers in the project, which is a DSC tool.  It seemed like a clever way to go.  I've used Shared Variables in the past, though, and am aware of some of the issues surrounding them, especially when the number of them begins to increase.  I'll only have about 120 variables, so I don't think it will be too bad, but I'm beginning to be a bit concerned...
The way I started doing this was to create a new shared variable for every data point.  What I've noticed since then is that there is a mechanism for addressing multiple registers at once using an array of values.  (Unfortunately, even if I wanted to use the array method, I probably couldn't.  The Modbus points I am interfacing to are for a custom device, and the programmer didn't bother using consecutive registers...)  But in any case, I was wondering what the performance issues might be surrounding this API.
        I'm guessing that:
    1) All the caveates of shared variables apply.  These really are shared variables, it's only that DSC taught the SV Engine how to go read them.  Is that right?
       And I'm wondering:
    2) Is there any performance improvement for reading an array of consecutive variables rather than reading each variable individually?
    3) Are there any performance issues above what shared variables normally have, when using Modbus specifically?  (E.g. how often can you read a few hundred Modbus points from the same device?)

    Anna,
Thanks so much for the reply.  That helps a lot.
I am still wondering about one thing, though.  According to the documentation, the "A" prefix in a Modbus DSC address means that it will return an array of data, whereas something like the F prefix is for a single precision float.  When I create a channel, I pick the F300001 option, and the address that is returned is a range:  F300001 - F365534.  The range would imply that a series of values will be returned, e.g. an array.  I always just delete the range and enter a single address.  Is that the intention?  Does it return the range just so you know the range of allowed addresses?
OK, I'm actually wondering two things.  Is there a reason why the DSC addresses start with 1, e.g. F300001, instead of 0, like F300000?  For the old Modbus API from LV7, one of the devices we have that uses that API has a register at 0.  How would that be handled in DSC?
    Thanks,

  • Unable to see shared library using fast user switching?

I couldn't get iPhoto 5.04 sharing to work between two users on a single machine. The documentation and this thread say it should work:
lori_diloreto, "How can you share a iPhoto library with another account user" #1, 09:03am May 10, 2005 CDT
but it didn't. Personal file sharing is enabled. iPhoto Bonjour sharing is enabled on the firewall. I can share iTunes libraries between the two users.
So I restarted the machine and tried again. It worked.
I don't know why the restart was necessary ...
BTW, I'd recommend more than my 512MB of DRAM when doing this. I'm amazed the G5 works as well as it does with so little physical memory. Tiger's disk swapping must be superb -- but I think at least 1GB would be adviseable.

    Hi jfaughnan,
Rebooting can cure a lot of little quirks. If all else fails when I try to do something and it's not working, I reboot and see if it helps. Usually it does.
