Sharing external drive among several Macintosh computers

Hi everyone,
I need a seemingly simple solution for my home. 3 Macs, all connected to the same router (hence in the same subnet, on the same network) should all be able to access an external firewire hard drive connected to one of the macs.
I'm surprised, confused and disappointed that this is so hard, even impossible(?). Once again: one of the Macs is constantly turned on and has a firewire hard drive constantly mounted on the desktop. This firewire HDD should be accessible for all other Macs on the network to save photos to, backups to, etc..
I'm avoiding a LAN drive because I cannot format it to HFS+ and I believe FAT and network file system will have limitations as opposed to the native HFS+. Additionally since I have a gigabit network I'd like to be able to utilise this high bandwith for file transfers and not limit myself to 100MB/s that the external LAN drives support.
Any help will be highly appreciated, thanks!
Roman

Just for the record, and perhaps to help others who faced this problem:
I haven't found a way to share a USB drive, like I wrote in my post. To my pleasant surprise a firewire drive can be shared splendidly.

  • Help using multiple computers and one shared external drive

I just "bought" the new LR / PS combo special.  I have 3 computers, 2 PC's in seperate cities and a laptop that I use on the road. I would like to use an external hard drive as the main drive.  This way I could take the drive with me.
2 Questions....First I tried to learn the basics using the internal hard drive on PC#2.  I then set up a external drive with multiple folders but within one main folder. I then started importing to the external drive using PC#2 (which is at my vacation property). Everything went smooth until I tried to import from that external drive,  It does not open that catalog. I am saving them as digital negatives.
Question #2 which I have not tried yet is PC#1 which is my main home computer does not have LR.  I have years of photos in hundreds of files sorted in bridge that have to be renamed and put on the hard drive.  It does not have the latest version of PS and I have lots of money invested in plug ins. How can I get lightroom on that computer and will it talk to what I believe is the prior version of photoshop. I don't even want to think about all the plug ins.
It's pretty clear that I am lost.  I was going to continue using bridge and PS but there is no bridge on the new version, at least not on the $9.99 special.  From what I've seen, LR is the way to go.

Bridge should be included in the $9.99 bundle http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html#pslr-bundle

  • Cannot access shared external drive on iMac from Windows 7

Used to be able to access this drive with no problem from any of my PC's. Sent iMac in for repair and system drive was wiped so I'm starting from clean install of Leopard. Did all the updates first including 10.6.4 which wasn't on before the system drive died.
    Firewall is off
    SMB is on
Everyone as well as main user has read write access to external drive
iMac is in the same workgroup as machine, although it wasn't before and it worked fine.
PC can ping the IP of the iMac and get a response, can see the iMac in list of networked computers
but cannot access anything on it.
Windows 7 network diagnostics says "file and print sharing resource (JMGIMAC) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts" "The remote computer isn't responding to connections on port 445
    I've tried everything, any ideas

I am familiar with the instructions for sharing files and have followed them (several times I might add).
My problem is that the information that I place in the WINS tab ( in the Network Preference Pane) disappears when the iMac is re-started. This information (especially the Workgroup name) must appear when the computer re-boots. It doesn't and I have to re-enter the information in the iMac before I can access its files from a Windows PC.
I have searched the internet for days trying to find an answer to this question. Although the problem seems to be fairly common, no solutions have been found.

  • Using an external drive with two different computers

(Very new to this) I have a laptop (windows vista) and a desktop (windows xp)and an external drive. I can download songs from cds usings both computers to my itunes library on the external drive. However I cannot access the songs I downloaded using the laptop while on the desktop and visa-versa. I thought that by downloading songs to the external drive I would be able to access them regardless of what component I use. Please help.

You'd have to use the same exact iTunes library file.itl for each PC.
Put the itl file on the external drive, and make sure the exHD is always seen by the operating system before starting iTunes. Also make sure it is always the same drive letter on both Vista and XP.
Then always use the library file on the exHD.
If the exHD isn't plugged in, iTunes will revert to the library fileon the PC's C: drive.

  • File Sharing - External Drive - Unable to add user

    Hello,
I am trying to share a folder within an external firewire drive. However, when in the "File Sharing" section, I am unable to add users after adding the folder to the "Shared Folders:". The add user dialog appears, but when a user is selected and the "Select" button is clicked, the user does not appear in "Users:".
The external drive is formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with an Apple Partition Map.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

try adding this user from finder rather than fro system preferences. select this folder in finder and enter command+i. in the resulting popup go to the permissions section and add the user you want.

  • Mac and windows sharing external drive on mac.

I am trying to access my external drive on my mac from my pc. Sharing is enabled but the drive doesn't show up. what are the options to do this? I have tried to find it by name command line in windows but no go. I also tried to mount it to the pc but no good the drive mounts but will not asign a drive letter and is not a readable format for XPpro.... Doh!
    Thanks
    Mark

If you want the drive to be readable on both peecee and Mac, the drive should be formatted as a FAT32 volume which OSX can read and write to or as a NTFS volume which the Mac can read but not write to.
    That is not correct.
Windoze does not recognize any Mac formats.
That's true, but Windows doesn't need to read Mac formats to access a network disk. The disk formatting is handled by the computer directly connected to the disk (which is the Mac). The network file access does not contain any disk formatting information and therefore it doesn't matter what format is used on the disk.
You can use SharePoints to make that drive visible to non-Admin users.

  • Time machine back up to shared external drive

We have 4 computers running leopard, all on an airport wireless network. If I have an external hard drive attached to the airport extreme base, non of the computers know that it exists. If I attach it only to one computer directly, via USB, then the others can't seem to access it, although it will run time machine backups for that computer, only. I want to be able to back up all of the computers to one external drive, and share information between them (like transferring photos.) Does an external drive have to be dedicated to one computer only, and directly plugged in, to run time machine?

I have been bitterly disappointed on upgrading to Leopard and have spent the last 10 days installing and reinstalling. I am unable to use Boot camp or Parallels with windows but have corrected most things by erasing and doing new install, then finding all my applications and documents and copying them directly from Time machine. The new problem is that my Toshiba USB external hard backup drive is now locked and I saw a report of time machine doing this. I have hunted high and low and can't find any info on this. I have tried to reset permissions but the drive is seen as read only. I cannot change this even from the Leopard install disk and I cannot write to the disc, can you advise how to change the permissions. I have been able to reset from Standard user to Admin by completely erasing and reinstalling but this does not change the access to my external hard drive, can you help please?

  • SHaring external drive with WinXP

    Hello,
I have a 1.25Ghz Mac Mini, with a 120GB external drive connecting via firewire.
That stores all my music videos and home movies.
How can I setup that external drive to be shared and accessible to my winXP laptop that is wirelessly connecting to the same home network?
I can only go as far as allowing sharing for my own username folder.... and I dont want to copy all those movies onto that location.
    Any advice please?

As a long-time Windows user, I struggled with this on my MacBook, too.
It's so easy in XP to arbitrarily share a folder, but on OSX, it's for some reason, not possible to share anything but your home folder.
Get SharePoints from http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/ . It'll let you share any folder on your Mac.
    It worked for me.

  • Can't see 'shared' external drives but internal drives all visible

running Lion Server on Mac Pro 1.1. I have 4 internal drives and 4 external drives connected via USB hub. Set up as file server only. All 4 internal drives are visible on the network. Non of the external drives are visible, despite being 'shared'.

  • Trouble sharing external drive on network

I have an 8 TB external drive connected to an old G5 on my network. There are 5 MacPros connected to the network -- all OS10.8. I want to be able to drop files onto the external drive for sharing/storage. File Sharing is on, but I cannot write to the disk, even from the G5 it is connected to. The "owner" of the external disk is logged in on the G5. What to do?? Thank you.

I tried that but still can't see the external drive. All I can see are the G5's public folder and shared folder.
Another thing - the owner of the drive is on a standard account (not Admin). Does that make a difference? Thanks.

  • Sharing external drive not possible since 10.8

    Hi,
I have an usb-device attached to my imac (mac os x journaled and a fat32 usb-stick). There are the normal entries under /Volumes/*.
Before my upgrade to 10.8, I could just mount that drive via network other macs (10.6 + 10.7) like usershome or public folders.
In 10.8 everything appears (Macintosh HD, user-home, public folders and any other folder I share) except these external drives or any folder I share on these drives.
I log on to the imac via my apple-id (seems to be new in 10.8?).
Any idea what changed? Or how to fix that?
    Thanks

So there seems to be a technical Bug:
If I share the drive as smb-Device, I can connect to it but don't have any content.
    Konsole displays
    26.08.12 08:21:13,000 kernel[0]: disk2s2: 0xc005 (UNDEFINED).
disk2s2 is my partition on my external drive.

  • Shared external drive on Leopard machine but can't find it on Tiger Machine

I use an external drive connected to my MacBook Pro (leopard 10.5.4) for all my data/music/photos etc and want to share it on the network so my wife can access it from her macbook (tiger 10.4.11). I have selected it and set permissions in file sharing window but when connecting from the macbook, whether logging in as guest, with an account set up for my wife or as myself, i am presented with same options each time of either mounting the macbook pro's hard disk (no use) or my public folder (which i don't want to use). The external drive is nowhere to be found. Thought I'd done the right things - does anyone know where I am going wrong - do I need to get leopard on the macbook too? Don't really want to if there's another way...

This works for me between my PowerBook (10.4.11) and MacBook (10.5.5) using both registered and Guest accounts (with Maxtor One Touch drives connected to the MacBook).
Thus you don't need to buy Tiger. You do need to check your configuration.
    1) Add the drive to the Sharing preference list by clicking on the "+" button under Shared Folders. I generally share the whole drive
    2) Set the permissions as you want them to be. I have tested my own account and "Everyone" with Read/Write permissions.
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • Sharing external drive over network - problem

    Hey guys,
I searched the forum, but nothing posted to other threads helped.
I want to share a LaCie external USB drive over my network. It consists of two macs: a mac mini and a macbook running OSX 10.4.9.
The external drive is formated in FAT32. I enabled sharing in the system pref. but I don't see it when trying to connect. I installed SharePoints and shared it from there, still nothing. I tried connecting using the "afp://..:" stuff, but I get an error message, saying I cannot connect.
    Got some ideas?

    Thanks for your reply
Did you use the little "Show File System Attributes" yet?
    Yep, it's r&w
Did you use the enable Windows(smb)Sharing to Shared?
    Yes
    Did you add Users yet?
Yes, my username which i use to connect is added.

  • Sharing external drive between PC & 2 mac laptops - ntfs VS fat32 WARs

and I am having issues with file format.
my goal: to use one of my external drives as an easily sharable storage place through the airport extreme for media, and basic work dosc for me and my wife.
we have a PC desktop and each have mac laptops - me a macbook pro and her a mac pro.
I have an external 380 gig drive that I'd like to use thru the airport extreme. it is currently formatted ntfs and of course airport will only properly work with drives formatted as Fat32.
PROBLEM - command line in windows will not reformat this as a FAT32 drive as WIN XP only supports FAT32 drives up to 32 gig - at least through the format command.
questionm - how do I format this drive so a all or at least a large portion of it is accessible through my wireless network? ? (also why won't airport extreme work with ntfs drives?)
    again:
    pc desktop running xp pro
    mac book pro
    mac pro

ps: thanks in advance for any suggestions here
