Sharing external drive not possible since 10.8

Hi,
I have an usb-device attached to my imac (mac os x journaled and a fat32 usb-stick). There are the normal entries under /Volumes/*.
Before my upgrade to 10.8, I could just mount that drive via network other macs (10.6 + 10.7) like usershome or public folders.
In 10.8 everything appears (Macintosh HD, user-home, public folders and any other folder I share) except these external drives or any folder I share on these drives.
I log on to the imac via my apple-id (seems to be new in 10.8?).
Any idea what changed? Or how to fix that?
Thanks

So there seems to be a technical Bug:
If I share the drive as smb-Device, I can connect to it but don't have any content.
Konsole displays
26.08.12 08:21:13,000 kernel[0]: disk2s2: 0xc005 (UNDEFINED).
disk2s2 is my partition on my external drive.

  • Seagate external drive not recognized since firmware update

I've looked through the posts here and haven't found this issue addressed specifically, so here goes. Any help will be appreciated.
I ran the firmware update on my MacBook Pro the other day, and everything has been normal since, except when I went to switch on my Seagate external HD - which I use as a backup drive - this morning. The mac doesn't see it at all.
Brought the drive into the office this morning and the iMac here, which hasn't been updated in at least 6 months, sees the Seagate right away.
I haven't upgraded to Leopard, though I have it, becuase I'm in the middle of a project and don't want any trouble with ProTools. In fact, I hadn't been making any updates at all, but in a moment of weakness ran the firmware update!
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks kaz-k,

    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

  • Internal / External drives not mounting.

    Hi All,
I have a Mac Pro Early 2008 that has suddenly developed the problem of not showing any of the three internal hard drives or any of the connected external drives on the desktop. The system drive does appear. This is a recent development but did not happen immediately after installing 10.6.
Potentially related, I can not shut down (also recent) without forcing to with the power button. Also takes an extremely long time to power up. Five minutes or so.
So far I have attempted repairing permissions, restart, resetting the SMC, and none of these have fixed the problem. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Just some of my experiences:
Checkmark got lost in Finder's Pref dialog for "show drives" "show external drives"
External drives got corrupted since I turned the power off the very second the drive-symbol disappeared from my desktop = I learnt that the drive is still doing some cleanup though it does not show anymore. So give it another 30 seconds before disconnecting its power supply
Luckily I had a backup since I always run TWO backupdrives parallel as a kind of mirror. So I reformated the corrupted drive and had the same problem. Somewhere in this forum I found that a slight change in size forces Apple's drive-utility to REALLY clean up everything from scratch. So I change the partition sizes by 1MB ... now no problem anymore.
My internal drive with OSX 10.6 has also been starting very slowly. I found out that removing as many as possible caches incl. the image OSX saves whenever you close the MacBook helps. Some of that cleanup was done using TinkerTool Systems and Onyx. Others was done manually. I also deleted many preference and .plist files like those of safari or preview
Finally I deleted all stuff which might initiate time-consuming internal communication ... no automatic check for updates. All programs needing "SIMBL" and Bonjour had to go. I had forgotten some test-entries in my networks systemprefs which made the system look for network connections. It goes without saying that any "connect automatically at startup" should go as well. I also had the spotlight index redone. Microsoft's Entourage Database was also checked and compressed. At the end I checked everything with Apple's disk-utility, DiskWarrior and Onyx. Now I am back at about 50 seconds for start-up
By the way: I deleted all 20 or so RSS-feeds and removed all widgets which depend on external information (like weather, airport departure). Funny enough - since then I also have no hang-ups experienced, whenever Safari is open. Since all these little workers update in different intervals I suspect that sometimes, their updating adds up and block the MacBook for 1 Minute or so.

When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

  • USB External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop

I have two USB external drives from the same manufacturer. One is for regular storage, the second is for Time Machine and movies.
The first one shows everywhere, on the desktop, in finder and in Disk Utility.
The second drive shows in Disk Utility only. However, it is functioning fine with Time Machine. So it is mounted. I have tried several repairs, and it reports no fault found. So it is certainly functioning correctly, but a setting or error in the operating system is not allowing it to be viewed in finder, or on the desktop.
    Any suggestions.

Correction: Title should be Firewire External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop.

  • Is their another way like to use my time capsule as an external drive not using time machine?thanks

is their another way like to use my time capsule as an external drive not using time machine?thanks

You do not have to use Time Machine.. but the TC is hardly suitable for a NAS.. it has no means to back itself up and is relatively slow. Still that is up to you..
CCC or Superduper are good backup softwares .. and there are a number of others.

  • AirPort Extreme External Drive Not Recognized

I have an AirPort Extreme 802.11ac and am hooking up a Seagate 1.5TB external hard drive (USB 3.0 with backward compatability) to the USB port but it is not being recognized by Airport Utility. Does this need a power source? What am I doing wrong?
I did reformat the external drive from NTFS to be Mac compatible (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) and when I plug the external drive into my MacAir, it shows up and is completely usable. Once I plug into the AirPort Extreme though, it goes into the netherland and I can't find it at all.
    Help?

I have the HGST Touro USB3 drive that works fine with apple airport routers.
I did try and establish a sort of database.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5912861?tstart=0
Contributions are sadly lacking but it already shows.. some work some don't.. some work with hubs some don't.
    To OP..
As per Bob's comment.. you are now in Limbo.. since you don't know if the problem is the hard disk or the usb hub. And it is possible either or both are at fault.
Look at OWC as they seem to specialise in external drives for Mac/Apple world. They sell hundreds of different USB drives.. I recommend you ring and ask their sales staff .. explain the problem and what you want.. a disk that works with model xyz airport.. like the Apple document show.
Even from Australia we buy stuff from OWC as they have first class knowledge of apple systems. And if you look for specials they are excellent.. !!

  • Time Machine Backup to Shared Firewire Drive Not Working

    Hello
I know this may have been posted before, but I am looking for a simple troubleshooting / diagnostic process I can follow to resolve my issue:
I have a Imac running Lepoard with all possible software updates. A WD Studio 500GB drive is attached via Firewire 800. The drive has the latest firmware etc. I also have a 15" powerbook G4 (last model) running leopard. All Macs are connected to the a Netgear DG834N router, via ethernet cables.
The Imac and Firewire connected external drive works normally with time machine.
I have shared the external drive on the Imac and given all 'built in' groups read/write permissions.
I can mount the external drive on the powerbook and see the files that are backed up by the Imac, I can traverse the folder tree within the folders contrained in the backup. Double clicking on these folders invokes the 'star trek' style time machine window.
When trying to backup the powerbook, I could see the external drive as a time machine target disk.
The backup failed twice. Having checked the disk a sparse image was created. I tried again a number of times without success - I deleted the sparse image and tried to start again.
This time I could not find the disk in the selection in time machine, a reboot of everything revealed the disk, but when selecting the 'use for backup' button in time machine on the powerbook nothing happens.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a pretty simple problem: time machine does not allow you to backup two computers to the same hard drive or partitioin. the way to fix this is to repartition you WD drive into two partitions, one for each computer. if you already have other data (not from time machine), make three partitons: one for iMac, one for PowerBook, and one for Other. do not put any data other than time machine data on the iMac and PowerBook partitons, always put it in other. you can partiton a disk easily with disk utility, but wait:
_CAUTION: THIS WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOOSE ALL THE DATA ALREADY ON THE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE!_
to avoid this, first use disk utility to make a disk image of the external hard drive, and save it on your internal drive. if the image won't fit (your internal drive doesn't have enough capacity, then you can either erase all the data on already on the hard drive with the reformat, or buy another disk to use for the PowerBook) then, when the disk is partitioned correctly, mount the disk image and copy all the files on it back to the correct* partition of the external hard drive. *if the files on the external hard drive came from the iMac, then put them on the iMac partiton of the drive. if they came from the powerbook, put them in that partition, and if it is not from time machine, put it in othe
    Hope you followed all that!

  • SHaring external drive with WinXP

    Hello,
I have a 1.25Ghz Mac Mini, with a 120GB external drive connecting via firewire.
That stores all my music videos and home movies.
How can I setup that external drive to be shared and accessible to my winXP laptop that is wirelessly connecting to the same home network?
I can only go as far as allowing sharing for my own username folder.... and I dont want to copy all those movies onto that location.
    Any advice please?

As a long-time Windows user, I struggled with this on my MacBook, too.
It's so easy in XP to arbitrarily share a folder, but on OSX, it's for some reason, not possible to share anything but your home folder.
Get SharePoints from http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/ . It'll let you share any folder on your Mac.
    It worked for me.

  • External drive not showing up

Hi everyone, I'm having some problems with my latest upgrade to Mavericks. Since I upgraded my 1 of my external drives is not showing up. I was able to find it in disk utility, but the name is grayed out. I've tried first aid on it which seems to be successful, but it won't mount. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a MacAir. I did not have any problems previously to this, so any suggestions would be appreciated. However, reformatting is not an option. I have too many pictures and documents on this drive (business), but I have to be able to view it. Thanks in advance.

Hi, just some ideas that might help.  Is it possible that the drive is just not showing up in the sidebar?  Have you checked by looking under the Devices section in the sidebar of the Finder and clicking on your computer?
I'm assuming you are probably looking on the desktop for the drive to show up though.  If it is not showing up there at all, I would suggest trying some of the suggestions in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24530176#24530176
That is, can you connect the drive to another computer and see if it mounts there?  Does it show up in the system profiler?
Do you own any disk recovery software in case there is a problem with the disk that Disk Utility can't repair?  e.g. Disk Warrior.
If none of these suggestions works, I'd suggest you post your results and also some more information about the drive (e.g. the brand and capacity) and the connection (presumably USB?) you are using in case someone else can help you.

  • Aperture, partial external drive storage-possible ?

I am thinking about buying a new Air, however, even with 256gb I will not be able to put my entire Aperture library onto my computer's drive. I know that it is possible to place the entire library onto an external drive, but is it possible to split the library so that part is stored permanently on an external drive, while the rest is on the computer's drive?
For example, can I keep all my photos less than a year old on the computer, but keep the older photos on the external drive, and plug in the drive in when I wish to access these older pics?
    Any advice appreciated.

This is how I currently use one of my Aperture Libraries. For the purposes of discussion, let's say I have only one computer, it is a laptop, I regularly work in more than one location, and I also work at home.
I split my Masters between managed and referenced. All new images are imported into my Library (the Masters are Managed). Semi-monthly, I move all managed masters which are older than 45 days onto an external HD dedicated to my full-frame digital negatives. (Of course, if I am still working on photos in a Project, I don't relocate the Masters.)
When I am at my office, I connect via Firewire 800 my external HD. With the connection made, I have full functionality for every image in my Library.
When I am not in my office, I have my laptop with me. I have full functionality for every image with a Managed Master (i.e.: everything taken in the last 45 days and anything else I have specifically left as Managed). I have access to the previews of all of my images -- I can't make adjustments or print images with off-line Masters, but I can keyword, label, move, and otherwise organize my images. I have shared Previews with other apps on my laptop, so I can use the Media Browser to attach images with off-line Masters to email, etc.
(In practice I always keep Projects intact (for me, one Project = one shooting session). If I need one or just a few photos from an older Project to be on-line when I am away from my office, I will relocate all of the images in that Project. I just find this easier.)
I have a Smart Album set to show me all Managed Masters older than 45 days. It is short work when I am at my office to relocate these Masters to my ext. HD.
This general set-up can be thought of as +"Most-recent Managed/Less-recent Referenced"+. I think it works well with any laptop. Where you put the dividing line betw. "Most-recent" and "Less-recent" will depend on your shooting habits, the size of your internal mass storage, and your other storage needs.
Be assured that Aperture handles this well, and makes administering it easy. (Fwiw, I wonder if this should be the default way Aperture works, auto-archiving Masters of a certain age.)

  • External drive not working on iMac, but works on Macbook Pro

I have read a few different threads relating to this question, with no real luck of a permanent solution.
I have an external drive that works perfectly on my Macbook Pro. My new iMac will not show the drive though (both with the current software).
The drive itself shows a power light and appears to be running/powered by the USB port.
    I have tried several ports.
It does not show in Disk Utility.
The option in settings is set to show the drive in finder and on the desktop (I have checked this).
I have tried restarting the iMac.
I have also had this problem after the iMac has been turned off overnight, and turned on in the morning (and then plugging the drive in after powering on).
I resolved this issue once by turning off the iMac, removing the power cord for a few minutes, and powering it up again.
I don't think it should be something I have to do every time I would like to use the drive though - It would be very irritating if I had to do that every time.
    Any advice or options here?
The iMac has only been used since Christmas day, 2014 - and has had this problem since that day (in which i solved it by the turn off/unplug thing).
Sorry, I am aware this question has been asked a lot. I haven't come across anything that is giving me a long-term solution to this problem.
    Happy new year!

Some USB-powered drives are just crappy. They require too much current from the USB and cause the bus to fail or the bus can't provide enough power for it to fully spin up. You can often hear or feel them clicking periodically (like once a second) as they are trying to spin up.
If this is the case, a powered Hub, external power supply, or Y-cable will be necessary to consistently use the drive.

  • Reinstall of OS: iTunes Library on external drive not recognized

I've always had my iTunes library on my external drive. Now that I reinstalled my OS iTunes will not open the library. I've navigated to the correct library using the advanced preferences but that's not doing it. I've tried discarding the existing library in the music folder. Can't seem to find the answer.
    Thanks

    JS,
I had some trouble following macmenno's instructions, but have had almost complete success. If you DO have your original itunes library file, this should work for you too.
    Background, my situation:
My harddisk was failing but warned me, so i copied the ENTIRE itunes folder to an external drive. The iTunes folder includes the "itunes library" file, the music folder, and the xml file. This was suggested in a book i have on iLife as the best way to backup itunes to an external HD to preserve playlists, et al. But the book failed to say how to copy the folder back if needed.
So the first time i naively just copied the entire folder back to the imac (new HD) but itunes failed to "find" it, even though it was exactly where i had deleted the equivalent default (empty) files/folder. Playing around i managed to get itunes to find the music but not the playlists and ratings...i.e., it was not finding the library file.
    Macmenno's instructions:
I started all over: With Itunes closed, I deleted all three items from the itunes folder: the library file, music folder, xml file. to be safe, i also emptied the trash since itunes seemed to be following the files. But i left the itunes folder in place, albiet empty. Per macmenno's instructions, i then copied ONLY the itunes library file and the xml file from my external HD to the imac itunes folder. I then opened itunes, checked the preferences to be sure it was pointing in the right direction. I then dragged the Music Folder from the ext-HD and dropped it on the library icon in the itunes program window.
That worked. i have my playlists, ratings, comments, et all.
Only problem is i now have duplicate listings of all music songs -- one with an exclamation point that doesn't play (apparently came from my itunes library file before i dropped in the songs), one that does play.
So macmenna, if you are still with us, how can i delete the 3,000 song titles with exclamation points? I tried to click on the column head to sort them all together, then block-mark and delete... but apparently we can not sort on that column head.
Or did i miss something in your instructions?
Thanks. and good luck to you JS.

    Hello,
I am trying to share a folder within an external firewire drive. However, when in the "File Sharing" section, I am unable to add users after adding the folder to the "Shared Folders:". The add user dialog appears, but when a user is selected and the "Select" button is clicked, the user does not appear in "Users:".
The external drive is formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with an Apple Partition Map.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

try adding this user from finder rather than fro system preferences. select this folder in finder and enter command+i. in the resulting popup go to the permissions section and add the user you want.
