Sharing External HFS Drives

I have a MacBook Pro and a Mac Mini. The Mac Mini have external firewire and external USB drives that are HFS formated attached. I can log into my Mac Mini from my Macbook Pro using file sharing. The problem is I can not connect to the HFS formated external drives. They are not showing up as options to mount. How can I set this up so when I connect to the Mac Mini I can access the external drives?
I could use any help anyone has for this problem.
Thanks

You need to manually configure which directories to share. By default only users home directories and certain public directories are shared.
Unless you're familiar with configuring the sharing daemons, your best bet is to get a copy of SharePoints which puts a nice GUI on the process.

  • Cannot access shared external hard drive with other mac accounts

I cannot access a shared external hard drive with other mac accounts (all accounts are on the same macbook Pro). The shared external drive is shared via time capsule and is connected (of course) in USB. I see well this external hard drive as a shared disk with my main account. Yes shared option has been activated with the Airport Utility .. but when I open other account these othe accounts can see the external drive but cannot access to its content that is flagged with a no way sign. Strangely enough when I close my main account and start opening a new session with one of the other account then fine I can access the external hard drive and its content .. BUT then it is from my main account than I cannot access its content the no way sign showing ..
Looks like only one account at a time can access the content of this SHARED external hard drive .. any one as an idea on how to really make it a shared hard drive so that all accounts on the same mac can also access it ? I am at my wit ends on this case. THANKS ..

Results of my enquiries at Apple Genius Bar .. the guys found the problem interesting. They've been unable to provide a fix neither to give any explanation as to the reason why. To be fair I was not much impressed by the technical level demonstrated ..
In the mean time I have found that if account no.1 can see the shared external drive content and in such case account no.2 (same Mac computer) cannot see its content (only the external HD with a no way sign) this account no.2 can UNMOUNT (by ejecting) this external HD from account 1 and then remount it (just clicking on the TC shared part in a finder window) and .. see and access its content ; whilst account no.1 cannot see its content anylonger. Unless it unmounts the shared external HD and remount it .. then account no.2 can see its content anylonger. This can goes on an on.
So eventually YES the TC can allow to share a USB external drive between several accounts and a same Mac .. BUT this require to unmount and remount EACH time the external drive is accessed from a "no.2 account". So OK to share files with seldom access but not practical in case of frequent access needed.
I just I have now to figure how iTunes can automatically unmount and remount a shared external HD when it needs to access one of this shared HD content from on time account no.1 and then next time from account no.2. May be I am asking too much ..

  • External HFS drive with bootcamp+XP OS networked to XP PC, is it possible?

Using a current G5 iMac intel or G5 pro Intel. Has anyone configured an external apple HFS drive running Bootcamp to plug into a dedicated XP Platform? Does the drive need to match the platform bit rate? It would be great to plug in the 2.5in external HFS Drive and use bootcamp + XP OS on dedicated XP platform and be able to use it. There must be many issues. This raises many questions! Has anyone succeeded?

  • Finder freezes when attempting to access a "shared" external hard drive (wireless via Airport Extreme)

Finder freezes.   As soon as I click onto my "shared" external hard drive (3TB WD - wireless via Airport Extreme), finder immediately freezes / eternally spinning beach ball (until I restart finder).  Can still access wirelessly on another Mac (not on Yosemite).
    Please help!

Ok - for a while there, the hard drive would not come up on the desktop - but now on a re-boot of the compter, or if I disconnect the hard drive and re-connect it, a message comes up with three buttons which say:
    Initialize
    Ignore
    Eject
Sound like the hard drive has died?

  • Problems sharing external hard drives with Lion

I have 2 external hard drives connected to my imac. I had no problem sharing and accessing my external drives on other computers (pc & mac). Recently I just upgraded my mac os to Lion and since I am having problems accessing my external drives on my PC (windows 7).
On my PC in the shared folder I can see the external drive folders but I am getting an error code when I try to open them. I have no problem accessing my imac folders on my PC, just my external drive folders.
I would like some help because it would be nice to access them wirelessly on my PC without having to disconnect them from my iMac.
    Rome.

My external hard drive was formatted in the FAT32 format--my iBook had no trouble reading or writing on this drive, and neither did my family's Dell deskop.
If I recall correctly, the FAT32 format cannot store files larger than 4GB. Also, you will have to partition the drive. My 160GB drive was split into 4 parts, each about 30GB in size. This is another limitation of the FAT32 format.
Formatting my drive was such a pain--and time consuming--that I didn't bother to format the remaining 30 or so gigabytes.
I've reformatted my drive to be HFS and will likely do some work with our home network so that our Dell will be able to send files to my machine & then to the external hard drive.
Programs exist for Windows machines to allow them to read a HFS (Mac-formatted) volume. If you want to be able to use all space possible on the hard drive, purchasing such a program may be your best option.

  • Shared external hard drive

i am looking for an external hard drive and am wondering if i can just use one external hard drive for both my mac mini and my wife's dell laptop. can they share?

As said, the drive wont work simultaneously with USB and Firewire. It will use whichever the first one is grabbed by whatever it is connected to.
Using Fat32 for a large drive (actually WD uses a hacked version of Fat32 since AFAIK Fat32 itself doesn't suport a 500GB drive) is not real good because the minimum file size gets too large.
OSX can read an NTSF format but cannot write it. YOu could run Parallels desktop which could give you access via an emulated Win environment. This may be a $100 answer for a $1 question, hoever. There is a utility called MacDrive for Windows that will happily read and write an HFS+ drive. Costs abut $50 IIRC. That would be my recommendation if you want direct connectivity.
You could also format the drive into two partitions, one NTFS and one HFS+. You still won't be able to have two computers directly connected at the same time but you won't be getting things mixed up between the two machines either.
Or you could share it as a network drive from either the mac or Windows.

  • Cant see the shared external hard drive in imovie on 2nd mac

I have been setting up a 1.5tb external hard drive. It is connected to our imac. It is partitioned to back up time machine on the imac, on the macbook via wifi ad imac and also for mass storage. I have transferred a lot of the archive video from the imac to the mass storage partition but when I tried the same with the macbook, it wont do it.
Just some extra clues, the hard drives are on the imac desk top as u would expect, but in the shared finder window for the imac on the macbook. When the macbook time machine runs, the icon appears on the desk top and then disappears once the time machine is done.
Maybe the mass storage icon needs to be on the macbook's desk top or something but not sure how to do this.
    Kind Regards

No harddrive list as in the former iMovie.
Take a look here about how to manage libraries:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/?lang=en#mov3fa25bae7
The structure of libraries, events an projects has changed in Movie 10, an event contains the clips, projects, photo's, audio etc. used within that event.

if you read the whole chapter you might get and understand it. Once you get it its much more powerfull then with iMovie 9.

  • Problems with a shared external USB drive

I have setup an external USB drive on my iMac 10.6 and use it for Time Machine backup. When I try to access this drive over my wireless network from my PowerBook 10.5.8 for TM backup, I can only see the drive under Shared as a Folder, not a drive icon. It is not available for the PB's TM app. This is a HP 1 TB drive formatted in 1 partition MacOS Extended journaled GUID .... and it works as a backup drive for the desktop 10.6 TM.
The very same thing happens if I connect this USB drive to my Airport Extreme only both the PB and the iMac see the drive as a folder and neither can use the drive for a TM backup.
So, how can I see the drive as a drive icon from the PB and have it available for TM backup over the network?

Do not attempt to back up that way -- it's "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+*
It sounds like you've missed a step in the setup. See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Be sure to note the advice there to partition the drive, so each Mac has it's own, exclusive space.

  • Sharing external hard drive between PowerMac and Mac Pro

I have a western digital external hard drive connected to a PowerMac and one connected to a Mac Pro. The PowerMac can see the Mac Pro external, but not vise versa. Can someone tell me what could possibly be wrong? Both computers have the sharing setup and we have partitioned the hard drives.
    Thanks

I'm assuming that you have Leopard on both Macs? When you say that you "see" the Mac Pro's external drive, are you seeing it in the sidebar? And if so is that showing up as the Mac Pro, or as the drive? It seems to me that if you're seeing the one, then what you've done is to "connect as" with the user login, but haven't yet done that with the MacPro to the PowerMac. Have you from the PowerMac clicked Add at the bottom of the User's list to add the right username, or clicked New Person to enter a name and password?

  • Shared external hard drive - No users listed and can't add them

I have an external drive connected to my iMac that is set as a Shared Folder. I regularly access this drive from my iBook. I had unusual difficulties recently with this drive not showing up as an available volume when I connected to my iMac from the iBook, so I took a look at my File Sharing preferences.
When I select the external hard drive in the Shared Folders column, no Users appear to the right. When I try to add a User, there's no effect. I am able to go through the process of clicking on a User in the selection box, but when I click the Select button, nothing shows up in the Users column. I have removed this drive as a Shared Folder and then re-added it, but that hasn't changed the situation.
I have a second hard drive (the two external drives are Firewire, daisy-chained LaCie's) connected to the iMac that typically isn't shared. Just as a test, I added this drive as a Shared Folder, and automatically settings for System Administrator, Administrators, and Everyone populated the Users column. So, the two drives are behaving differently.
Also, if I add any folder on the first hard drive as a Shared Folder, the folder comes with Users assigned to it, and the Users settings can be modified as normal. So, it's only the root level of this one hard drive that is behaving differently.
I don't know if this strangeness has anything to do with the recent difficulties with connecting to this drive from my iBook. But regardless, I'm curious about any explanation, because it doesn't seem right.

And, by the way, this is the output for the terminal command on the second drive that does show its users and privileges normally in the File Sharing window.

  • Sharing external optical drive.

It's official. I have three iMacs, and the optical drives in each one have now failed. The optical drive of the oldest iMac (c. 2007) lasted the longest, and just bit the dust.
I have external USB optical drives on two of the three iMacs. I would like to be able to access the external optical drive of the iMac it is tethered to from the iMac that does not have an external drive (yes, I could just move the drive to the other iMac, but I want to make this work). I can access external USB hard drives from the other iMacs, I am not sure what is different about the optical drive.
    Any ideas?

Optical drive sharing only works with the built-in drive.

  • Sharing External Firewire Drive

    Hello all,
I just received a new Maxtor One Touch 3 Firewire 400 500GB external hard drive for christmas. My wife and I are recent Mac converts, having sold off 5 PCs to purchase my iMac, and her Macbook. Now my dilemma is this. We both want to use the external drive to backup our files. I have the drive plugged into my iMac via Firewire, and it is already set-up to backup my drive once a week. I was wondering if there is a way for her to access the drive through our airport network and back-up her files. I have my computer enabled for file sharing, is there anything else we need to do??

Welcome to Discussions - You need to partition the drive using Disk Utility> Mac OS Extended Journaled, otherwise backing up your wife's data will overwrite yours. Make sure each partition is at least the size of the HD on each machine.

  • Sharing external DVD drive

I have an ext. USB DVD drive (set to Region 1) connected to
one of my iMacs (all their int. DVD drives are set to Region 2).
What do I have to do to be able to watch DVDs
from the ext. drive on the other iMacs?
I've already turned "DVD or CD sharing" on, but it seems to be not enough.
    Thanks for your help!

    Thanks for your answer!
Does Remote Disc appear in the Finder window's Sidebar?
Yes, if you mean the external USB-Drive and the sidebar of the Mac to which it is connected to.
Have you configured CDs, DVDs and iPods to appear in the Sidebar in the Finder Preferences?
    Yes of course.
If Remote Disc appears in the Finder window's Sidebar then highlighting it should give you a list of any Macs on your network that have disc drives and on which you have enabled CD, DVD sharing.
Where should this list appear? It only show the contents of the Disc when I click on it..
I only see the other Macs under "SHARED" in the sidebar. Clicking on them brings their Public Folders.
If you have inserted a disc to share in the drive, the disc should appear if you highlight that computer in the list. If the disc appears, then you should be able to play it as if it was on your computer.
I assume you mean the other Macs now. Here again I just see the other Mac's Public Folders.
Normally copy protected games and videos are not sharable through Remote Disc sharing.
I tried a self made CD and I also tried connecting a USB-RAM-card. It didn't work.
    What am I doing wrong...?

  • Sharing external FireWire drive between two Mac Pros

I know that sharing an external FireWire drive between two machines (i.e. both connected at the same time) is a very bad things as both will assume that they have exclusive write access to the drive and quite quickly write over what the other machine has just written.
Would it be possible though to mount the drive as read-only on the first machine and in read-write mode on the second? Would this preserve integrity as the second machine would in fact have exclusive write access or would other problems arise?
Thanks for any responses to a stupid question!
    Peter

Mmm, Connect the drive to the private secure network Mac. Connect the two Macs by FireWire and create a network over the firewire connection, configure it to use class C addresses, ie. 169.x.x.x manually and then share the firewire drive to the other Mac (also on a class C network address over firewire).
Both macs will still have their own ethernet network addresses and each network will not be visible from the "other" network (unless you choose to share your internet connection over firewire).
The only caveat here is that the firewire drive will be visible to every other Mac on the secure network that you allow to connect to it (which is why I chose that one, rather than the public Mac). Or can you restrict sharing to only one network ..... didn't think so.
