Sharing FCE Over Apple Network

I'm collaborating with a colleague and gave her access the .fcp file on my hardrive -- the same harddrive where the media connected to the .fcp are stored. When I went to her machine to 'testdrive' this new workflow, I found the process to be too slow to be worthwhile.
We're both using Intel Macs with 2 megs of RAM on each box and running 10.4.11.
Questions:
-- Is this slow performance to be expected trying to work with .fcp files this way?
-- What would be some hardware/software solutions to boost our productivity speed?
Thanks.

This is not workable in FCE. There is too much data to move over a network.
You can do this with Final Cut Server, but I don't believe it works with FCE. You might inquire on the Final Cut Server forum. You would need something like a Fiber Channel or other SAN system for hardware.

  • Viewing Shared Music over a network

    Good day everyone.
My problem relates to viewing shared music over a network. I have recently gone to university with my imac. Everyone on the network can see, and listen to everyone else's music, apart from me.
I was wondering why I am unable to do this? Do people think that because I am using OS X opposed to windows, that prevents me being able to view their music?

Are you sure you are on the same network as the other users?
In System Preferences, choose Network... select the ' Active' networking method (AirPort / Ethernet etc.) then Configure. Then choose the TCP/IP tab. What details are displayed?
You need to be on the same subnet (I think!) to other users for iTunes sharing. So, for example my iBook has an IP address of 10.0.1.6, and my iMac that hosts all the iTunes library is on 10.0.1.2. If my iBook had something like 192.168.0.1 then I wouldn't be able to see the iTunes library when using my iBook - hope that makes sense?
Check with other network users what their IP settings are

  • Ichat problems over apple network

We have 2 WDS network participating airport express base stations connected to the internet via Comcast cable. The network is really fast and we never had a problem with multi-way video chatting inside or outside the house.
Now that the family upgraded to leopard, we can't screen share via AIM or bonjour (connection doctor says we don't have capabilities because the network is too slow. We can video chat and it's extremely fast, but when I enabled the effects, we were disconnected.
It seams that 2 mac laptops connected with the latest software over a relatively standard apple network should work...

    Hi
Set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to 500.
    Restart iChat.

  • Sharing Files over a network!

I'm on a network with many other users, some of which are PC's and was wondering how I could share some of my files over the network. How would I go about making a folder or group of folders which are able to be accessed (either with or without a password) on the network. Making sure that only the files within the specified folders is placed on the network?
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Connecting an external drive to TC and sharing it over wifi network

I wish to connect an external hard drive to the Time Capsule USB port and share it over my home wifi network.
I can see the external HDD in Finder when it is plugged directly into any of my Macs.
I cannot see the external HDD (using either Airport Utility or Finder) when it is plugged into the Time Capsule's USB port.
I have followed all of the suggestions in these archived discussions to no avail:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12588172#12588172
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/9069546#9069546
    This is my setup:
Netgear DG834n set up in 'modem only' mode
    Time Capsule 2TB:
The TC is set up as the wireless router for my home network, with DHCP reservations (using MAC address) for each wireless device that needs to connect to the internet
The Time Capsule's hard disk is set up as a shared disk on the wireless network (file sharing is enabled with the Time Capsule password). I use this volume for storing all of my iTunes media files
I do not use the TC for backups, nor do I use Time Machine (I use a third party backup tool)
Freecom XS 2TB USB 2 external HDD, containing a single volume formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled
Permissions on this volume are set as read & write for everyone
I wish to leave this drive plugged into the Time Capsule permanently and use it to backup the iTunes media files currently stored on the Time Capsule disk
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The Thunderbolt interface is local, just like USB and firewire.. (although firewire is a bit special and did have some network ability).
The Thunderbolt drive could be shared from a computer to the network.. but you have to realise an ethernet drive has to have an OS.. it cannot live on the network as Accessible Drive.. OR NAS without having a proper OS. Thunderbolt is one interface of an OS.. but not the OS.
What you need to buy is a NAS.. look at Synology or QNAP for the most popular brands.

  • Printer Sharing works over wired network not over Airport - Why is this ?

Computer A (eMac, 10.2.8) has HP Laserjet connected via USB. Settings : Printer Sharing On, Firewall Off.
Computer B (G4 iBook, OS 10.3.9) when connected via ethernet cable (via router which shares my DSL line) can see and print the HP Laserjet.
Computer B when Airport turned on to join network via AX (plugged into router) cannot see any shared printers. Nor can I add Rendezvous, Appletalk or other printers.
I only just added Airport capability to the iBook, other network features (internet access, file-sharing with eMac etc) all seem to work fine.
If I plug the Ethernet cable in, computer B can now see the shared printer. If I then unplug the Ethernet cable, reverting the computer B to Airport access only, I can see and print to the shared printer.
Clearly, therefore I can print over Airport to the shared printer, but the mechanism of plugging in and then unplugging the ethernet cable isn't exactly an advert for Apple simplicity and elegance.
Would anyone care to enlighten me as to what is going on and how to fix it properly ?
    Kind Regards

    Greg,
many thanks for the prompt reply, and this looks a good suggestion. To clarify; I have a wired router (Netgear, can't remember exact model) and 2 Airport Express (which I call AX-A and AX-B). I use AX-A as a wireless access point and it is wired into the Netgear router. AX-B is used to provide internet access to an older iMac in a remote part of the house (not that my house is very big or anything, and is not (I believe) relevant to my printer sharing issue.
I am now using AX-A to allow my iBook to join the network. I will check when I return home, but believe the AX is already set up not to distribute IP addresses - these are from the (wired) router.
    Cheers

  • Sharing Printer over Wireless Network

I am trying to print from my MacBook to a printer that is connected to my desktop.
My printer is a HP LaserJet 1012.
My desktop is a HP Media Center running Windows XP.
My MacBook is running Mac OS X Version 10.5.5
I've shared my printer on my desktop. However, when I check system preferences > print & fax window, no printers show up. When I click on the plus sign, there are no listed installed printers.
Is this a Mac issue? a HP issue?
I've been working on this issue for a long time and can't seem to figure out how to get the MacBook to see my printer.
AHHHH!!! Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

I am experiencing same problem. My desktop has Vista. Is there something that needs to be addressed on the PC so the Mac will see the printer? We have set up the pc to 'SHARE'. The PC is the network HOST and the mac is the GUEST. When we go to Add printer and click Windows, no printers are listed. It's probably something simple but we sure can't figure it out. HELP PLEASE.

  • Can't see shared printer over wireless network

I currently have a newer HP F340 injet printer connected to my emac which is on a wireless network (Linksys) so that I can share internet connection with my MacBook Pro. Both are running Mac OS 10.4.8. When I try to print on my MacBook Pro, I don't even see the shared printer, in fact, there isn't even a separate chioce for shared printers. I used to have a Lexmark printer that actually worked on the network.

After following some advice from a different posting, I loaded the gimp print drivers and recreated the printer in the printer listing using the gimp printer. This worked! The only problem I had was that I had to load the whole Mac OSX base system and then the print drivers. This messed up my system and I had to reset a bunch of user preferences, etc. It took me a couple of hours.

  • Sharing Files Over a Network from an External Drive

I have a Macbook Pro that is running 10.5.6, and I have, recently, acquired another Mac that is running 10.5.6, as well. I decided that I wanted to share some files from my Macbook Pro. The setup for file sharing is a breeze, but I am having some issues. I choose folders from my Macbook Pro's internal drive, and I create two users, "alpha" and "beta." I give alpha privileges to share a folder called "A" and I give beta privileges to share a folder called "B." From my other Mac, I connect to my MBP, and I enter the correct credentials for each user, and "alpha" and "beta" have access to what was assigned to them earlier, respectively, folder "A" and "B."
Everything seems to be great! However, the issue begins when my external drive comes into play. (It is formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled.) I select a folder called "C," from my external drive, and give only privileges to user "gamma." I also select a folder called "D," also from my external drive, and only give privileges to user "delta."
Whenever I login from my other Mac, I find a problem. If I login with "Gamma," I should only be able to view folder "C," but I can also view folder "D!" Whenever I login with "Delta," I should only be able to see folder "D," but I see folder "C," as well. I have fiddled around with many settings, and I have had no success. A few members on my network will be sharing files from my Macbook Pro, and I only want certain members to see certain folders. I've tried this with two different external drives, and they both exhibit the same issue. Is this something that can be fixed?
    Thanks for the help!

I'm sure that someone has dealt with this. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

  • Sharing artwork over the network

    Hi,
I have my music library on my tower and I have sharing enabled so that I can play the music on my other computers. My question is how do you get the machines to view the album artwork? It was doing it but now isn't anymore.
    Thanks everyone.
    -Keith

I think it's a DRM-type issue. If the music you're sharing is only licensed for your machine, then other people can't see it. So it's either because of some licensing restriction on number of people you can share it with, or it's just not working properly.

  • Sharing Files between Mac and PC over a Network

    Greetings,
I have recently made the switch to the Mac, and I have been so pleased with it ever since! I am getting married soon and my wife-to-be has a Windows XP desktop machine. I have been reading up on the different options on sharing files, and I want to ask if someone with experience can confirm what I think I have discovered.
    1. A person on Windows can read and/or write to a Mac OS X formatted drive only if they run Macdrive.
    2. A person running Windows XP can read files stored on a shared folder on the Mac through network sharing without additional software. But can they write to the shared volume on the Mac??
Now, I know all about the Mac side of things. It can read NTFS, read/write to FAT/FAT32, connect to Windows computers...etc. I have actually done all these things already, and know how to use them. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea before I go into working in the other direction, from Windows to Mac.
Thank you for any help that you might offer.

    1. A person on Windows can read and/or write to a Mac OS X formatted drive only if they run Macdrive.
You don't need Macdrive for sharing files over the network, macdrive is only needed for a PC to read a Mac formatted Hard drive that is directly connected to a PC i.e Firewire Drive.
    2. A person running Windows XP can read files stored on a shared folder on the Mac through network sharing without additional software. But can they write to the shared volume on the Mac??
Yes you can write to a windows sharepoint on a mac this would be limited to their home folder unless you setup other permissions.
To setup windows sharepoints your best using a shareware utility called sharepoints
Now, I know all about the Mac side of things. It can read NTFS, read/write to FAT/FAT32, connect to Windows computers...etc. I have actually done all these things already, and know how to use them. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea before I go into working in the other direction, from Windows to Mac.
It does not matter what format hte pc drives are if your sharing over a network you only need to know about formatted drives if they are directly connected to the computer i.e firewire, or usb drives.

  • HP Laserjet M1132 MFP is too slow over the network!

    Hi,
My HP Laserjet M1132 MFP is too slow over the network!
I have connect the printer to a windows XP 32bit SP3 using UBS port. The printer works fine on the local computer but when sharing it over the network it works too slow, for example with print test page it takes about 45 seconds to print and for other documents it takes much longer time.
I have installed the latest driver form HP website and upgrade the firmware it the latest version.
It happens on other Windows XP machines as well.
I connected the printer to my laptop (Windows 7 64bit) and it works fine (No delays over the network) and it seems that this problem have some relations with the windows XP Driver.
I have used local port trick on remote machines (instead of regular method) like this:
    ''add a local printer;
    'new port'
    'localport'
    \\XPcomputer\HPPrinterName as port name
    but still nothing!
There is nothing wrong with the network, we use to use a Samsung printer on the same machines over the network with no problem.
    I Really appreciate your HELP!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

BEHZAD_T, how is the printer connected to the network (wireless or Ethernet)? If it is slow wirelessly, I would suggest trying to connect the printer to your router with the Ethernet cord and install it to the networked computer that way.
Another question is, relatively speaking, how close to your router are the Samsung printer and the HP printer? Depending on the distance (and what stands between the devices) there can be a lag between sending a print job and it being received by the printer.
    Let me know!

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • A Bit Off Topic, But Can the HP Photosmart C3140 Be Shared Over a Network?

I was going to get a MacBook and since I need a new printer, this one looks good since it would be free (after the $100 rebate).
However, I've had trouble sharing HP printers over a network in the past. Would this one give me any problems. Also, if it's connected to a Windows computer, would it make a difference?

    Hey Large,
Some printers don't support network printing because of driver issues and what not, but the C3140 should work just fine.
As for your windows question. I have found it easier to print from a mac, over a network to a PC, than the other way around.
Also don't be afraid to call apple tech support when you get your macbook. They will walk you through the networking process and answer any questions you might have. It's free for 90 days so use it.
    Good luck

  • Sharing Files Over Network and computers not showing up in sidebar

I am trying to figure out how to share files over the network. Now when I click onto the computer in my shared items, I do not get access to the home folder that I used to see. Instead, I am getting a folder image with the user name below it, but it says Sharepoint. However, when I click on the folder I get another folder that says dropbox with a down arrow. However, when I click on that it says it cannot be opened because I do not have privileges.
What happened to being able to being able to get access to the home folder from the users on the computer that you are trying to retrieve files from.
Are there settings I need to adjust to allow me to get access to the files on the other computer.
The other computer is an iMac G5.
My next issue is that my wife's iBook G4 doesn't even show up in the shared items in the sidebar.
Again, are there settings on this computer that have to be adjusted.
    Thanks in advance.

My Main Problem is that my PC can see my Macbook...
On the Mac, did you enable Windows Sharing in System Preferences>Sharing>Services ?
