Sharing files between a Mac and PC

I have 2 Mac's and 2 PC's and they are all on a network via Airport Express and all connect to the Internet just fine. What I'd like to do is share files to and from all the computers on my network. I can see the Mac's just fine and copy files between them as well, however I cannot "mount" the PC's. When I go into network I see library, Mshome,My Network,Servers,Workgroup. In Ms Home I see one of the pc's and in Network and workgroup I see the other PC. When I click connect on either of the pc's regardless of which folder they are in i get the spinning lollipop and then a message that the alias needs to be fixed or deleted. Can anyone help me? I've turned on Windows sharing on my Mac and I've turned on sharing on the folders on my PC that I would like to have access to. What am I missing? I should mention that I know nothing about PC's. Thanks ahead of time for any and all help!

Is there a way to Move files to the iCloud thus freeing up disk space on my Mac? Or does iCloud only sync (replicate) files between my Mac and the cloud? I want to free up disk space on my Mac and assumed that the icloud would be a good way to do this, but having 'moved' 70Gb of files to the iCloud drive (I've upgraded to 200Gb storage) my Mac is still nearly full and I've realised that it seems to just Sync files just like dropbox.

So, the big question is did the Apple guys confirm that this is how the new iCloud drive should be working?  I'm guessing, from your response, that this is indeed the case.  Are they going to fix this anytime soon?  I thought that this was a new function of the iCloud drive in Yosemite.
I just want an online storage facility to back up my photo & music collections.  I did look at Dropbox as they have a good deal going with their Dropbox Pro, however this is still just a sync service where the Master files reside on your local disk drive - although I have read that there may be a way to work around this.  Still not ideal.

  • Sharing file between moutain lion and lion

To share files other MACs running Mt. Lion, you simply turn on AirDrop.  Without an internet or intranet, can you, and how do you share files between MACs running Mt. Lion and Lion?  How do you share files between Mt. Lion and any other older versions of OS X?

Here is a real-life example. My principal home machine is a 2011 Mac mini running OS X 10.8.3. My work laptop is a 2010 MacBook Pro with Lion. On the laptop, I enable File Sharing (afp) and export a project folder from the MacBook Pro and mount it on the desktop of the Mac mini.
Now, I can be more productive across two large monitors with the same applications and data; without concern for synchronizing final content. In my case, the work files remain on the laptop. Moving files between machines is a simple Finder operation.
WIthout a network, you can create your own with a length of CAT5(E) or better cable connecting each Mac Ethernet port. No need for a router in this (temporary) case. The alternative to this is a USB stick or where both machines have a reader, an SDHC data card.

  • Sharing files between my imac and my MacBook Air?

How do I share files between my imac and my 2nd generation MacBook Air?
I have my imac that holds alot of files that I want to transfer over to my MacBook Air. How do I do this at home through a wireless network. I enabled file sharing on my Imac and MBA. This did not work. Any Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

I've used Apple's file sharing for years but two programs have made my life tons easier. One is the freeware DropCopy - install it on both computers and you'll see a black dot on your desktop. Drag a file onto the dot and it is copied to the other computer. If you have more than 2 computers you can easily select which computer gets the file.
The second is the freeware program DropBox. Like DropCopy you need to install the program on both computer. Unlike DropCopy, DropBox watches a folder on your computer called DropBox and any file put into it gets synced to the cloud and from there copied to the other computer. One of the great things about DropCopy is that you can also access your files via the Internet.

  • Advice on sharing files between two Macs please?

    Hello all,
I have two G4s, one running 10.3.9 and one running 10.4. They are both connected to an ethernet router for internet. I would like to share files between these two computers as well as share a printer connected to the G4 running Panther.
After reading the Apple docs, I'm a bit confused, so I've posted here for clarification if possible.
From what I understand I can simply "turn on file sharing" on both and then grab and move files to the "Public" folder only of each G4?
I can also simply "turn on printer sharing" and share my printer with the Tiger G4?
In either case, will the G4s mount on each other's desktops?
Thanks in advance for any clarification.

Have you actually tried it yet? You're not clear on that bit!
It should just work. Be aware that shaing over ethernet is all about IP adresses. Normally you wouldn't think about this, but your router will probably assign these to the two macs automatically. In theory.
A good thing to know is, if you are on Mac A, with Sharing set up as ON on the other Mac (B), you can log in AS THE USER on Mac B, thereby gaining total access to that machine - not just the shared folder. However, if you log on as a "guest" you will only get into the shared folder.
The thing to remember is, go to preferences in the Finder (nont System Prefs) and click the Sidebar tab at the top. Make sure that Connected Servers and Netwrk are ticked to appear in the sidebar.
Any window you open in the FInder will now have a Network icon on the left. Touch this, and the other Mac shold appear (after a delay) like a disk. Click it, and then you can click through to log into it.
You can set up network disks to automount at startup too.
    Good luck.

  • Epson printer sharing incompatibility between PPC Macs and Intel Macs?

I currently have an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 that is shared on my network so I can print to it anywhere including using Airport. This has worked fine for a long time. Last night I tried to print to it from Photoshop on the MBP and found lots of the options in the printer setup for this specific printer weren't showing up. It was very baffling, so after much trying I finally connected the printer directly to the MBP and the options were back. But other things were very different. Like instead of having different printer selections for bordless printing, there is only one printer selection and now when you select the paper size (8x10 for example) there are submenus on the paper size for borderless or other options.
Certainly better but very different. Looking in the printer directory, the file structure looks different and the version for this printer (which now isn't a driver itself but a plug-in to a main driver) is 3.0 which is much newer than the version in the PPC 10.4.5 or on their website. I don't have other epson printers to check out, but they appear as plug-in files now which they didn't before. This issue may apply to other epson printers, not just the 2200.
So, this is long winded way of saying that yes, the printer works (and works well) but it's not incompatible with the PPC mac version and you can't share the printer without losing functionality. It sure would be nice to be warned about this. I don't see anything from Apple or Epson that would let you know this. Has anyone else seen anything similar to this?

I'm in the same situation --- I have a 2200 hooked up to a PPC desktop Mac, and I share it over Airport with my MBP. I have good and bad news.
Good news: Epson has posted new 2200 printer drives for Intel-based Macs on support.epson.com. Download and try them. Read the instructions --- you'll probably have to do a "Reset Printing System" and restart your MBP before installing the new drivers.
Bad news: while I'm able to print to my 2200 over Airport, I'm unable to access Print Settings to change the media type. Thus, unless I'm printing to plain paper, I still have to use a direct connection from the 2200 to my MBP.
Does anybody have a solution to the Print settings issue?

  • Sharing Files between Windows Vista and Macbook Pro

    Hi everyone!
I have just bought my first Macbook Pro and I love it. I am running Windows Vista on my desktop and connect wirelessly to the internet via a Netgear router. I have managed to connect to the internet with the Macbook Pro wirelessly too.
I am not sure how to set up file sharing between the PC and Macbook - can anyone point me to some SIMPLE instructions please?
    Many thanks

this is a wonderful article! thanks so much!
only one small change though. you don't really need to create another user ID to access the windows machine. i used my existing ID and it logged on fine!
but still, thanks for the rest of the article. i was totally lost without it...

  • I need to share files between to macs and I cannot seem to find an answer

    Hi All
My biggest issue is that I have two macs and want to share files should as my Rapidweaver websites, my dosh (accounts package) master files, etc
I had tried Mobileme for a time and could seem to get it to do what I wanted.
I would like to be able to have my imac as the master, but be able to work from my macbook, eg if I want to work outside of the office in the house be able to just use the most up to date file of my website in rapid weaver (as I have 3 licenses)
    Can this be done?
I had tried th network sharing to access the desktop, but my partner complains that his web viewing slows down too much

Of course it can be done but you need to have a few things in place.
    * a fixed address so you can reach your computer at home (or a way to dynamically adjust for changes)
    * your computer needs to have a public address, or you need to set up your home network so it maps the ports you need to the right inside address.
    * You need to enable file sharing on the target Mac, share the appropriate folders, and set up an account with access.
    * You won't have proper file locking, so sharing files that may be open on another machine can cause corruption. If you're sharing files from your website while the website is active, that could cause trouble.

  • Sharing files between 2 Macs

I am trying to enable file sharing between my new iMac and my (2007) model Macbook Pro. I am succesfully able to share files from the old mac to the new one, as I can connect via the macbook,  but when I try and connect from the new Mac it "fails".   Everything is set up in System Preferences ok (I think) and I have restarted both macs, but still not conecting via the new mac. Any ideas on why this is happening?

  • Networking or sharing files between 8.6 and 10.3.9 computer systems

I need information about computer file sharing. I have an iMac with 8.6 and an iBook with 10.3.9. What do I need to do to make the two talk to each other, so I can share files and printers? They both work independently, although the 8.6 is no longer Internet compatible. Can they work together? If so, how?
    thanks, outdoorgirl

An inexpensive solution would be to buy a USB flash drive and hand carry between the systems. You may want to reformat the flash drive to Mac OS Extended.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
    Start up disk utility.
On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks. Click on the external disk.
    Click on the partition tab.
You will now see how your external disk is currently set up. Fill in the information as appropriate.
You should be able to run an Ethernet cable between the machines. "This document outlines which Apple products require an Ethernet crossover cable, and which can use a standard Ethernet cable when connecting directly to another Apple product."

On your Mac OS X machine:
-- Preferences > Sharing > Services and turn on Personal File Sharing.
-- Preferences > Sharing > Internet and turn on Share your local connection. ( This turns on the dhcp client. )
You will need you ip address
    Preferences > network
copy down the ip address on the built in ethernet link.
You may need to activate you internet connection for the ip address to appear on your new Mac. Hence you need to make an ethernet request from your old iMac. Mac OS classic waits until it needs an ethernet connection to start the ethernet connection ( load drivers ). Start some ethernet application like a web browser.
You will need to fill in your new username on your old iMac. You may use either the full username or the short username. Using the short username avoids the problem of filling in spaces in a long user name. You can use the terminal to find out your short username.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
      echo $USER
You can also get the ip address in the terminal. Look for the en0 connection. Do:
      ifconfig
On your old iMac running classic:
    apple > control panels > tcp/ip
set to get info from dhcp
    apple > network browser
    click on the finger
    pick connect to server
and fill in the ip address of your new machine
fill in your short username & password
double click on the disk name that appears in the network browser. Yes, you are running things from you old iMac but you can copy what you want.

I was able to upload files by using an FTP server. I used PureFTPd Manager 1.7 with Mac OS X 10.4. this download does include the server software. I did have to create a FTP user. I had to boot the classic machine after configuring.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/pureftpdmanager.html
    I used fetch:
    http://fetchsoftworks.com/downloads.html
    I used version 3. Previously, I used version 4.
You can use any web browser to download from Mac OS X when you turn on Web sharing. This is how I downloaded fetch.

  • Can I move project files between a mac and a pc?

I have a PC desktop, which I run Adobe Premiere CS4 and work mainly on.  I am looking into buying a mac book pro to use in the field and for some work while traveling.  I was wondering if I could start a project at home (I work on Firewire Portable Drives) then open it in the mac version then back to the PC when I get home?  Or even the other way around... I just want to go back and forth between the machines seemlessly.
    Thanks!

Other than the physical external formatting, you might want to plan your Assets, so that you have the greatest compatibility between the two platforms, also. Some .MOV CODEC's can cause PrPro problems on the PC side of the street, though in general I have few problems with the ones that I get from most Macs. Same can be true for .AVI's on the Mac side.
I've swapped Projects from Mac's to my PC with no issues to date. Only hangup was the FAT-32 format for the external, because of the Mac compatibility (what Curt pointed out). File sizes have to be kept down due to that. Do not know if the newer Mac OS's can read NTSF, but I do not think so. To overcome this, you should be able to get MacDrive for the PC and use a more efficient formatting than FAT-32. I'd check into this, as a 4GB file limit comes up quickly.
In my case, I just plugged the Mac's external and copied the whole Project & media, to my 2TB NTSF externals and didn't have any problems. Never even needed MacDrive.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Sharing files between two macs over the internet

I'm trying to work out how to connect two macs across the internet and am wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a "very basic , step by step, how to" file or manual.
I've browsed some of the discussion in this forum and some are more helpful than others but none seem to start with the very basics of what should or should not be turned on in the firewall settings and the the security issues mentioned in one ot two threads.
I'm not looking for " hold my hand tutorial" just a pointer to where I can do some more reading so I can inform myself and possibly ask some emore intelligent questions
I'm trying to connect a B&W G3, OSX 10.4.6, connect to the internet through a dsl modem over an ethernet network, to a remote Imac G5 , OSX 10.4.6 also connected through a different dsl modem over an ethernet network.
    Thanks

  • How do I transfer Numbers file between my Mac and iPad after buying the app?

I have a few files in Numbers on my Mac that I would like to update on my iPad while on the road.  I bought the app for my iPad and checked the Documents section of iCloud is "On" with both devices.  How do I get the files to appear on my iPad?

Since you have Lion, rather than Mountain Lion, you will have to manually upload your Mac Numbers document to iCould. Log into iCloud with Safari. If you upgrade to Mountain Lion you will be able to select iCloud from Numbers just as if it was another folder on your system.
