Sharing Files between Mac's in the same Network

ok, I have a Mac Pro and my sister has an iMac
I know how to share files but I get annoyed by this:
1)I only want to share my "Public Folder" but instead, it not only shares my Public folder but also my "Macintosh HD and System" Folder. And I cant find a way to hide this folders. It does it by default how can I fix this.
The same thing happens for both Mac's not only the Public folder gets share but the system and Macintosh HD as well.
*This has nothing to be with 10.5.4 update... since i was trying to figure this out long time ago...
2) I have a laptop computer running Vista, when i had 10.5.1 I was able to see the PC monitor in my finder window to share my files, after 10.5.2 came out, every time I turn on my laptop , the icon does not show up on my Mac. And i hate going to "finder/go/connect to server" option
Do you guys have the same problems??

I know what you mean, I am having the same problem. I think I figured out why this is happening though.
This is what happens when you turn on "file sharing":
"Users you have set up with accounts in Accounts preferences can access your computer by connecting to it over the network. *A user with an administrator account can access your entire computer.*"
I am assuming that your sister has an admin account on her iMac, which automatically gives her full access to your hard drive.
Does anyone know how to restrict file sharing, even for administrators in the network?

  • Sharing Files between Mac and PC over a Network

    Greetings,
I have recently made the switch to the Mac, and I have been so pleased with it ever since! I am getting married soon and my wife-to-be has a Windows XP desktop machine. I have been reading up on the different options on sharing files, and I want to ask if someone with experience can confirm what I think I have discovered.
    1. A person on Windows can read and/or write to a Mac OS X formatted drive only if they run Macdrive.
    2. A person running Windows XP can read files stored on a shared folder on the Mac through network sharing without additional software. But can they write to the shared volume on the Mac??
Now, I know all about the Mac side of things. It can read NTFS, read/write to FAT/FAT32, connect to Windows computers...etc. I have actually done all these things already, and know how to use them. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea before I go into working in the other direction, from Windows to Mac.
Thank you for any help that you might offer.

    1. A person on Windows can read and/or write to a Mac OS X formatted drive only if they run Macdrive.
You don't need Macdrive for sharing files over the network, macdrive is only needed for a PC to read a Mac formatted Hard drive that is directly connected to a PC i.e Firewire Drive.
    2. A person running Windows XP can read files stored on a shared folder on the Mac through network sharing without additional software. But can they write to the shared volume on the Mac??
Yes you can write to a windows sharepoint on a mac this would be limited to their home folder unless you setup other permissions.
To setup windows sharepoints your best using a shareware utility called sharepoints

It does not matter what format hte pc drives are if your sharing over a network you only need to know about formatted drives if they are directly connected to the computer i.e firewire, or usb drives.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network?

How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network? Thanks

You can do it manually, but it is much simpler if you use a tool such as Back To My Mac, LogMeIn, or something like that. Those programs enable you to connect to your computer through your router without you having to adjust the router settings manually.

  • Sharing Downloaded Files between 2 accounts on the same system

My wife and I each have separate accounts set up on our iMAC G5. We both have .MAC accounts, but only use one account to download songs into iTunes. In an earlier version of iTunes, I set up both accounts to point to the same iTunes library file, which is located in a shared directory. I recently got an iPOD for my wife. The problem is that when she is logged into her account on the iMAC and opens iTunes, she does not see any of the songs that I've downloaded from the iTunes Store.
I have logged into her account on the iMAC, opened iTunes, and "Authorized" her "computer" to use my iTunes account. Now I can see the purchased songs from in iTunes running in her account, but those songs cannot be loaded into playlists and downloaded into her iPOD.
Our cars both have iPOD interfaces that require playlists to have specific names. She wants her own playlists and I don't want to have to rename my playlists, create new ones for her, download them to her iPOD, change the names on her playlists, then rename mine back to their original names. I just want to let her maintain her own playlists.
I've installed the most recent version of iTunes (v7.0(70)) and it didn't change the behavior at all.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   2 GB,iSight, WD 160GB USB, WD 250GB USB

Instead of read-only access to each other's iTunes directories, I followed instructions posted elsewhere on this forum and have ITunes in both accounts pointing to the same physical file. From my account, I can see all the songs, both the ones loaded from CDs and the ones downloaded from ITunes (using my ITunes account). From her account, she can see the songs I loaded from CD, but not any of the songs I've downloaded.
If I share my ITunes library, then she can open the shared file and see all of the songs, downloaded as well as those from CDs. However, if she selects any of the downloaded songs, she cannot put them into playlists or otherwise copy them to her IPod.
She doesn't have an ITunes account. Her ITunes is set up to use my account and is one of the two authorized "Computers" for my account. I thought that going into ITunes and authorizing my ITunes-account would have solved the problem, but it doesn't.
I'm running the latest ITunes (Macintosh) software, version 7.0 (7.0).

  • How to exchange big files between mac users through the internet?

How can we send and receive big files between Mac users (apart from Dropbox) ?

If you aren't on the same local network (which I assume you aren't), then the easiest solution is to use Google.
If you simply google "sending large files" you will get hundreds of suggestions/applications.
Ie Dropbox, Google, YouSendIt, FTP, etc

  • Can you setup handoff to work with two mac computers on the same network?

I am attempting to setup handoff to work with two computers on the same network. I cannot seem to get it to work. Should I be able to?

I'm not sure but I haven't seen anything on the Apple site that indicates that it would not work. The following troubleshooting documents may help: Get help using Continuity with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite - Apple Support
Note in particular the Mac models supported. The other thing that occurs to me is that in addition to being on the same network they would have to be within Bluetooth range of each other.

  • HT3500 I cannot connect Macbook (OS 10.6.8) to Epson XP 400 wirelessly. It works when connected to a USB cable. Both printer and Mac are on the same network and Norton/symantic is OFF. The Epson will not show up in "add printer". is off.

I cannot connect my Macbook to Epson printer XP 400. Both are on the same network and Symantic anti virus is disconneted.
Add printer does not find the Epson. All works when I use the USB cable.

Further information on my question about the epson wireless printer and macbook.
It seems that the epson xp-400 works wirelessly only with 802.11n wireless network not with 802.11g or earlier.
Does anyone else know about this. I read it on the epson support site for epson xp-400.
Also epson xp-400 will not work wirelessly if it is already connected to a computer with a USB cable.

  • Sharing files between mac os and windows on same computer???

I am going to get a new Intel based mac. Is there a way to share files between the mac and the windows os?
Example: I would like to share my iTunes music library from mac os so it is also available in Windows iTunes.
Is there a way to do this without having to mirror the entire library within Windows?
    Thanks!!!!

It also depends on how you want Windows to be working on your PC - do you want to have a dual boot system (i.e. you choose whether you want to use OS X or Windows when you turn the computer on) or do you want to use a 'virtualization' program like Parallels (i.e. Windows loads up as a window on your OS X desktop).
Depending on how you want to do things will affect the ease of integration between OS X and Windows. Via the virtualization route, what you want to do can be done in a couple of clicks - you go into network neighbourhood (in Windows) and set up a Network shortcut to the files you want. You can do the same trick via OS X using the 'Network' functionality in Finder.

  • How can I transfer files between a PC and a Mac NOT on the same network?

I have an iCloud account, a Time Capsule and a Seagate Free Agent portable hard drive. Which ways can I transfer files (any or all three?) and how?  Here's my dilemma: I'm a graphic designer and I work on a PC at my office. At home I use my MacBook Pro...same programs, save files. However, I had trouble earlier saving my new documents onto the Free Agent from my MacBook Pro as the Free Agent was Read Only and original files on it were from the PC. The PC is not on my Time Capsule network and not accessible or even close to my MacBook. I simply want to be able to save the files I updated/changed on my Mac to somewhere that I can access them later from that PC...right now they are saved to my Documents folder. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

  • Sharing files between Mac to Windows

    Hi,
I have an ibook G3 with Mac OSX, originally 10.1.5 but recently I upgraded it to Tiger 10.4. The hard drive is about to die (clicking in left corner, applications running slow even though I have enough memory). I'm sorry to say but I bought a Microsoft PC. I've just had so much trouble with my Mac.
I would like to transfer my files from grad school from my Mac to my Windows PC using an ethernet cable if that is possible. I really don't know much about computers. How does one do this, set up a direct connection between the two computers which are not on any kind of network.
I really don't want to lose my files and I have already tried some other options. The CD burner on the Mac never worked so I was unable to burn copies of my files directly. I tried using an external CD burner but not all of the files burned, not sure why. I tried transferring the files to a zip disk but when I connected the zip drive to the Windows PC the computer told me it couldn't read the files and would have to reformat the disk erasing all of the information. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate them.
    Thank you,
    Melissa

    Hi Melissa!
You have the right idea about using an Ethernet cable. It's the simplest way to transfer files without resorting to sneakernet.
Do you know whether or not either of your computers has a Gigabit Ethernet port? If so, any Ethernet cable (straight-through or cross-over) will work. Otherwise, get a cross-over Ethernet cable from your local computer store.
You can plug the cable directly between the two computers and they will automatically assign themselves IP addresses in the same range 169.254.xxx.xxx.
If your Windows PC is running Windows XP, then it has file sharing enabled by default. If you'd like, create a folder on your Windows destkop, right-click and select Sharing.
From your Mac, you should be able to go to the Go menu in the Finder and select Connect To Server... Browse to find and connect to your Windows machine. You can drag and drop files to copy them.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Sharing files between mac and PC's

I have an iMac running 10.4.8 and 2 PC's running XP home edition. I am trying to share files between them. They are networked through a router. The mac can see and connect to both of the PC's and I can open files on the PC's from the mac. The PC's can connect to each other and open files. The problem I'm having is connecting to the mac from either of the PC's. They all have the same workgroup name. I have windows file sharing on. Is there something else that needs to be done so the PC's can see and connect to the mac?

    Hi Pat-999,
To set up a link between Windows XP and the Mac do the following:
    1) Open "My Network Places" on the Windows computer.
    2) Double click on "Add a network place".
    3) A setup wizard will appear. Click next and choose the option to specify a network site, etc. Click Next.
    4) Open the System Preferences on your Mac. Choose Sharing. Under the Services tab, turn on the check box for "Windows Sharing". Click on the Accounts button and activate your account. If sharing hasn't started by itself, click the Start button. Write down the address where it says "Windows users can access your computer at...". It would be something like \\192.168.0.122\username
    5) Enter that address in the wizard at the Windows computer and click Next.
    6) It will take a few minutes for the connection to show up. When it does, give the connection a name and save it.
In the future, you then just need to have Windows sharing on at your Mac and double click the connection you saved to connect. When you do, a dialogue box will appear asking for the Mac users' name and password to connect. Put in your long name (the same one that appears any time the Mac asks for your password) and the password. A folder will open on the Windows desktop.
Initially, it will only let you set the connection up for your entire Mac account. So you will see all of the folders within that account. If you want to confine the connection to the drop box, then run the connection wizard again. This time, on the page where you enter the Mac address, you'll have a drop down menu of all of the folders in your account. Choose username\Public\Drop Box and save that connection. Delete the previous one. Now when you connect (using the same long name and password), the folder on the Windows desktop will be confined to the Drop Box folder of your account.

  • Sharing library between two logins on the same computer Windows XP

This itunes help topic does not work in sharing the libarary.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432
Has anyone figured out how to do it?
    Thanks.

I do this with my wife. With two logins you get two libraries. Make sure you store the files somewhere accessible to both users. We use a networked drive. All you really need is a folder you can both get at. Set iTunes within both accounts to point at the the desired storage location and use the same Music Store account.
The only complication I have found is that tracks imported by one person are not automatically added to the library of the other. For instance, CDs I import can be used by both of us but she must import the tracks in order to have them in her library. I have a excel file made for this. When I import a CD I add the name to the list then in the next column is an "x" meaning I have it. The next column gets an "x" when she adds it to her library.

  • Sharing Files between Mac and Windows XP PC

I have an small office with three computers. There is a new Mac that basically acts as the server. There is a shared folder on the computer. The other 2 computers are PCs. All permissions have been set on the Mac. The other 2 users are set as Administrators on the Mac and have the ability to Read and Write. The other 2 users can access the files, but they are not able to make any changes. The shared folder has may sub folders. Any ideas?

huh, i used migration assistant to create a user with all my old data. now i have 2 users. anyway, i was putting the old data i wanted (i plan to wipe out the old user) into the shared folder...and it was working fine. all of a sudden, i put files into the shared folder, and when i log in as the new user, i can't use the file. won't give me access.
i've enabled file sharing, the files and folders are marked as shared, and well...it seems like file sharing is broken.
    ...ideas?
