Sharing files connection failed

I have two MAC's. One is a 20, 2.1 GZ,iMAC,PPC Chips. One is my MACBOOK 2.16gz core 2 duo. I also have them all on an airport express. All internet connection for all three are fast an working great. Here is the issue.
1. I tried to set up the MACBOOK as the main file point for photos and music.
2. I turned on all computers and then enable through systems references I turned on the file sharing on the MACBOOK.
3. Immediately there is a connection on the PPC and is says connection.
4. It never connects, says connection failed. When I click on connect again it fails again.
5. I shut down the MACBOOK and then reboot.
6. I then get a connection again on the PPC, but this it say connection failed. I click on connection again and it allows me the enter as a registered user which I do and it is perfect.
7. This same thing happens when I try the reverse. (setting up the iMAC as the main file point)
8. When the Macbook sleeps though the files are unavailable to the PPC and vice versa.
9. the only way to make it works is to turn off both computers, then start one and turn on file sharing, then turn it off, reboot and start the other computer no matter which one I am trying to use as the main file sharing unit.
I need to know if here is a way to having to stop rebooting either computer to make all this work. I thought just turning file sharing on or off was all I needed to do to make all this work. Also, the sleeping issue make the file inaccessible.
I have repaired permissions key chain first aid to no avail.
Any help world be appreciated.
Thanks.

Can you try logging in as the Ownername/Ownerpassword of the other Mac(s)?
Might have to delete that account in Keychain Access and redo it.
Sharepoints might help make it easier...

  • Sharing files/connecting to a Linux Ubuntu7.10

I have an Adsl modem with a 4 port ethernet router on the back end (LAN) that connects to my ISP. IPv4 is configured with DHCP.
There are two G4s (OS 10.4.x) and a G3 (OS 10.3.x with a G4 update card installed) and a Fujitsu with Ubuntu 7.04 connected via ethernet to the router. The Macs all see each other and can share files. The Ubuntu can successfully ping two of the macs but not share files. the third Mac - Numero uno can ping the linux machine but not connect to it and the linux machine cannot ping it.
I have a fifth machine - Mr G (windows2k) that has had no problem whenever it is connected to the LAN (Sambas fine). ANyone have any idea how I can get the Ubuntu machine to network successfully to the Macs?

I think I have some of the problem solved. I have a friend who had recently purchased a used G3Clamshell with an X version on it - Panther I think. He has a Linux machine and I asked him how he sets his network up for the MAC - he has an actual stand alone router. His main machine is Wintel, so he uses Samba and a "windows network". He referred me to a linux discussion forum--- there are so many of them ----and I had not been able to locate this particular one.
    the Url:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-78976.html
Basically one has to install the samba package on the Linux machine and configure the smb.conf file to allow sharing using samba. then start samba. One then has to create and designate a specific folder/directory to be shared and go to that folder and enable it to be shared. I can now mount that shared folder on the Mac with full permissions. Which is the only thing I had wanted to do in the first place, so I can transfer Websites locally and browse them with linux which one of my customers uses.
on the mac side one has to enable windows sharing and then enable an account. I am not comfortable sharing more than a dummy user so I enabled one for share. I am now able to mount that "share" on the Linux machine but I am not able to actually open and display its contents nor modify it in any way. When I try to open the folder I get a dialogue box: "Authentication Required" You must log in to access: "user@computername/User Name domain WORKGROUP" and there is a password box. No matter what password I type in it does not work and the dialogue box reappears. well at least the dialogue box is now there.
I guess there must be some sort "permissions/password" configuration that is not correct. But I will mark the question as answered since I can mount a share from the Linux machine, but any help on working out the correct permissions for a successful and secure mac share would be appreciated.
    thanks

  • "Connection failed" error keeps popping up

I've recently set up a new home network. I keep getting the following error, which is my computer trying to connect to an IP address from my former network (an external hard drive that was set up as a shared server):
    Connection failed
The server "192.168.1.66" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
The only button option is "OK." Since this IP address is no longer valid and never will be again, how can I make this error go away?
    Message was edited by: jjkatz

I think I figured it out. I went into System Preferences\Accounts and checked to see what was loading when I log in. I removed two items related to the external drive software (which never really worked well with the Mac OS anyway) and rebooted. I haven't seen the error since.

    Hello Kiran,
Can you post full contents of dev_w0 logs, there must be a ora error also written there.?
What I assume is there is a problem with op$ or sapr3 user while connecting to oracle
If that is the case refer to note 400241,you will find the solution

  • File Sharing "Connection Failed"

    Hi
I have a newly purchased MacMini and a year old MacBook Pro, both running 10.6.6.
When I turn on File Sharing (with the afp option set) on the MacMini
it appears in the Finder sidebar on the MacBook.
When I try to connect to the MacMini from the MackBook it says "Connection Failed"
and the MacMini disappears from the Finder sidebar.
After that, when I look at System Preferences on the MacMini, File Sharing is off.
    Any ideas?
    MANY THANKS!
    Mike

I seem to have found a solution to my problem.
After more experimentation I found that not only was File Sharing not working neither was Printer Sharing. However printer sharing worked if both computers were connected to my Netgear router by ethernet but not when the laptop was connected wirelessly.
This indicated a wireless problem and as both could access the internet however connected to the router it looked as though the router was not passing an incoming wireless message from the laptop out to the iMac via ethernet.
Consequently I switched everything off, unplugged it all from the mains power supply and left it for 25 minutes. On reconnecting and rebooting everything the printer sharing now works properly again with the MacBook Pro connected wirelessly and the iMac via ethernet to the router an, for printing, the iMac via USB to the printer.
    Long may it last!
I hope this info might help others with a similar problem

  • Connection Failed when File Sharing and High CPU Usage

I have a small wired network where a G5 Tower (10.5.8) has an external drive connected via FW800 set as shared so it can be accessed from a C2D iMac (10.6.4). This has been working great since it was setup in Feb.
Today the iMac was unable to access the G5. It didn't show either the Public folder on the G5 or the shared FW drive. When clicked it showed "Connection Failed." Immediately the G5 spun up to 100% CPU usage. Activity monitor showed AppleFileServer as the culprit, and when quit, resumed to normal usage.
Same happens when trying to access the G5 from a Mac Mini (10.5.8)
Once the iMac gave a warning of something like: "Failed to connect because there are too many users." Which is rubbish because no one was connected or could connect, and this was verified in the Sharing Pref Pane.
I've tried restarts, disk repairs off a boot disk, and enabling / renabling File Sharing. The G5 can connect to the other macs, and they to each other, just not to the G5.
Anyways, any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

So somehow I got the computers to connect to the G5 with file sharing. I went through a bunch of steps, and not really sure what worked.
I believe it had something to do with the 'Public' user folder only being listed in the file sharing pane, instead of the User folder. Why that would also stop the shared external drive from being seen, I'm not sure.

  • Failed connection to shared files

I'm having an issue with being able to connect to a shared server that's under listed "shared" in finder. When I go to connect, it says connection failed...even though the password and login name are correct. I would really appreciate any help!

Hello, try this & let us know what happens...
On this one In finder, select Go menu>Connect to Servers..., type in afp://ip.of.another.computer, like...
    afp://10.0.1.5
    afp://192.168.1.3
    Or if it's a PC...
    smb://10.0.1.5
    smb://192.168.1.3

  • I can't get my macbook to access shared files on a windows computer when it's connected through a wireless access point.

I recently bought a Netgear Wireless Access Point to use in the office so we can have a wireless network.  I configured the wireless network, and I am currently connected to the internet.  However, I no longer can access the shared files on the Windows computers like I could when I was hardwired in with an ethernet cable.  I've disabled all of the internal firewalls on all of the computers (and there's no firewall built into the WAP), all the computers are on the same workgroup, and I've tried accessing the computer with the shared files directly via the IP address using the instructions found here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8849.html.
My computer sees that the other computers on the network are there.  They show up in the network view from the finder.  However, when I try to connect to them, it tells me the connection failed.  When I click connect as, it says:
    "Connection Failed
"The server “PC-ASSISTANT” may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
When I try to connect via the "connect to server" on the finder, I type in "smb://10.0.0.103/Word Processing"  It tells me:
"There was an error connecting to the server “10.0.0.103”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator."
I have no clue what the problem is. I'm not really an IT person or a networking guru.  Can someone please help?

  • When trying to use sharing, I get Connection Failed

When trying to use my OSX 10.75 laptop to access files on my OSX 10.6.8 laptop it says "Connection Failed". In the console, it says:
         Finder: SharePointBrowser::handleEnumerateCallBack returned -6600
File sharing is turned on in the target computer. I have a user account setup for file sharing. That user account has read/write access setup.
I have tried to turn off sharing and turn it back on.
I have tried to remove the shared folders, make new folders and then share those new folders.
I have tried both guest access as well as access with a specific user account.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • "Connection failed" using smb to Win 7 64-bit shared folder

    Hi,
I am a new Mac user and was unable to find any suggestion for a solution to the problem I am experiencing.
I use a folder on my PC to store video files. It is shared and the Mac connects to the address smb://biblioteket. This usually works fine, but sometimes I get a "Connection failed" error message. I connect through a gigbit wired ethernet connection.
    Some other characteristics:
    - If I restart my PC and reconnect, it works again - every time.
    - I can connect to the PC using Teamviewer even if I get the error message, meaning there is a connection between the computers.
    - The error will always show up if I try to copy large files from my Mac to the shared folder on the PC. I get a error message during file copying, after that the mounted drive is inaccessible and the "Connection failed" error message appears.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
So I did what I always do to get the error message. I moved about 25 files from the Mac to the PC. Total size was about 5 gb. About half way through, I get the following error message:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “(filename(.avi” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36).
So I retry, but this time the mounted drive has disconnected and get the following error msg:
The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -41).
This happened with a new user (administrator). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • Trans.log file showing  'ERROR = CONNECT failed with sql error 12541'

    Dear All
We have upgraded our datatabse from Oracle 9.2.0.8 to Oracel 10.2.0.4 on our ECC 5.0 IS-AFS SAP system. When we check version from SQL, it's showing 10.2.0.4. That means database is successfully upgraded. Now, when we login through our <SID>adm user and checking R3trans -d, it is showing

  • Connection failed the file server is running on your machine

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could potentially help me figure out an issue I have been encountering when connection to server via VPN Connection.
I can successfully connect to a VPN connection, however, when I try and connect to my server I am receiveing a prompt that "connection failed the file server is running on your machine"
Does anyone know what this means or has suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Alex

Check you network settings and the computer name in sharing preferences.
If you still have problems read a few of the hits at this Google search:

    hi,
somewhere on the windows machineshould be something like "network setup wizard". exactly where it is and what it is called i cannot remember off the top of my head, windows help is actually slightly useful here, it should have a link to it.
all the options checked on the mac are only what services the mac is offering to other machines, they have nothing to do with the services it can access (mostly...).
oh yeah, to actually connect to the pc after you have turned its sharing on, use the finder, or, when it does not show the pc (this happens on and off, possibly a refresh problem apple...) choose go --> connect to server and enter smb://<pc's name or ip>
to find the ip, the easiest way i think is
    start --> run --> cmd ->> ipconfig

  • Why are shared files not visible when iPhone4S connected to iTunes?

What makes this problem mysterious is that I have exactly the same settings on the same or eqivalent Apps on iPad2 and iTunes4S but when my iPhone is connected to my iTunes (running on my PC under Win7) it shows no files on Apps like Pages, iBooks, Keynote, and Print-n-share.  Each of these Apps has files and each shows files when  I connect my iPad2.   I cannot export or import filesto/from itunes and iphone because the list of files inside the Apps is not visible in itunes.
PS I CAN, btw, export and import files by using the amazing App and service "DropBox" which is the only route in and out of my iPhone (I am not ready to use iCloud).

This is not a reply but an addition.  While searching for answers as to why "Shared" files in original Apps in my iPhone4S did not appear on itunes I came across a similar discussion on another Forum in which Jim described in some detail how to get the two devices (my iPhone 4S and my iPad2) to recognize similar embedded files in similar Apps.  https://discussions.apple.com/message/16690584#16690584
I went through this promising procedure but it did not help.  Since the two devices are independent (I think -- they are on the same accoubt but ar different devices) I should be able to make them work the same way with regard to what is seem in iTune.

  • I recently bought an external hard drive and attached it to a wireless modem router. The problem is that i can't access it from my macbook. I get a "connection failed" and "the server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally".

Well I believe I described the problem above. I want only to add that the external hard drive is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive 1TB and the wireless modem router is a Belkin N Plus (model F5D8635-4 v1). Also, in the finder window under "shared" I see a "belkinserver" and when I click it, it says "connection failed". If I click "connect as" I get the "the server "belkinserver" is available on your computer..." which I mentioned above. I tried to connect macbook via ethernet to the modem router and then when I typed "smb://belkinserver" it immediately prompted me for a username and a password and when I typed them finally I got to enter the contents of the hard drive! So what's the problem wirelessly?

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.
