Sharing files in macbook pro w/ installed winXP

Hello,
I've been searching for the answer, and i keep getting results pointing to bootcamp and parallel, so does that mean that, as is, the macbook pro cannot exchange files with the winXP disk that is on the duo system?
I've tried simply in the mac workspace to place a file into the XP harddrive but it won't accept that and says it cannot be modified.
Is there a way? or will I need to write onto disk, and then rewrite into winXP at run?
Thanks for any help;)

Hello pheonixfly,
To share the files/folders between Mac and Windows is a bit tricky tasks, but it is possible with the third-party sofware.
1. Running in Mac and want to access files in Windows: You have to format your Windows partition as FAT32 type of format then you can write, read any files in Windows. This is to be done when you are at the begining of installing Windows. However, under FAT32 format you have some limitations in which A) Your total capacity of Windows partition cannot exceed 32GB and B) Your single file cannot be larger than 4GB in term of size. If you choose NTFS type of format for your Windows partition, you can only read but not to write or delete.
2. Running Windows and want to access files in Mac: You can check out MacDrive 6 from www.mediafour.com. Install this app. on Windows environment will enable you to access any files/folders in Mac when you are running Windows.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
James

  • Sharing files from macbook pro with PC

Hi there - and thanks in advance!
I followed the instructions (or so I thought) at http://macs.about.com/od/macwindows/ss/sharemacfilesxp_7.htm
and I can see the mac folders on the PC but when I try to access them from the PC, I get "not accessible. You may not have permission to use this folder. Access is denied."
I have SMB on and a guest account with allow guests to connect to shared folders checked.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!

Things certainly look right to me!
Might be worth shutting down both computers, then restarting and giving it another try.
I don't have my mom's netbook handy--that's the computer I was tinkering with to get sharing working--but I may have had to resort to ftp sharing. This should work by entering ftp://<your Mac's ip> (without the brackets, of course!)and hitting enter.

  • How can I access files from a flash drive that were previously saved using a Windows computer? When I attempt to open the file on MacBook Pro, it is asking to "convert file to"; I also have Microsoft Word installed on the Mac as well.

How can I access files from a flash drive that were previously saved using a Windows computer? When I attempt to open the file on MacBook Pro, it is asking to "convert file to"; none of the options I choose work. I also have Microsoft Office (with Word) installed on the Mac as well.

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

  • I've lost the use of Appleworks in 10.9.2. Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other?

I've lost the use of Appleworks by upgrading to 10.9.2.
Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other? I'd like to be able to boot to the older OS when I need Appleworks and  few other applications that aren't available on OS 10.9.2.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hello again, WZZZ,
Here's an update. I was successful in creating two partitions on my internal drive, and in installing OS 10.6.6 on the second partition, as per your guidence. I now have it up to 10.6.8 with all the security updates and AppleWorks. A great thing.
    Some thoughts:
    • The partitioning had one hitch; it failed at first. But once I "repaired" the disc with Disc Utility the partitioning went thru.
    • The partitioning took a long time in 'resizing the partition.' A few hours I think it was. Lots of progress bar watching.
    • If I had it to do again, I'd size the two partitions differently. My original data was occupying about 230 Gb of the 320 Gb disc. I made the new partitions share the space, about 230 and 75Gb. That left very little available space for the main disc. I ought to have put some breathing room in there. As it is, it's an incentive to clean up all those files, especially all those iTunes files. I now have about 10% of available space there and mean to continue deleting.
So, all in all a good project that got me where I wanted to go. Thank you for your help.
    Appreciatively,
    wallah

  • I made a dual boot of windows 7 and mac os x lion in my macbook pro .i installed m icrosoft support software also. now, can i install windows updates? do i turn on the automatic updating of updates? does hot fix of microsoft helps in stop freezing?

i made a dual boot of windows 7 and mac os x lion in my macbook pro .i installed m icrosoft support software also. now, can i install windows updates? do i turn on the automatic updating of updates? does hot fix of microsoft i.e, " support.microsoft.com/kb/979491" helps in stop freezing in dual boot mechanism?

Windows has a software updater built into Windows and when you install the Boot Camp drivers then it will install an Apple software updater also. I believe Windows is set to automatically download and install your updates as does the Apple software Updater. They both will update the individual files it needs to periodically.
"Microsoft updates" and "Windows updates" are basically the same thing in Windows. Are you talking about the "Windows support software" when downloading from Boot Camp Assistant? Apple installs a software updater for it's Boot Camp drivers in Windows 7 so you can do it manually or automatically.
The "Hot Fix" your referring to is only for certain motherboards built from other Windows only computer manufacturers and does NOT pertain to any Apple computers.
If you have a problem with your computer then it's best to ask a specific question so we can help better.

  • I cannot install OS X Lion on my MacBook Pro. Installing time is in negative hours. (-2,147,483,648 hours)

At first, my macbook couldn't start up. It only displayed apple logo with a spinning wheel on grey screen for hours and hours. Then I decided to reinstall the OS. I tried so many times to install but the installing time said thousands of hours remaining to complete . I left the computer for days but  it didn't install OS. I tried that connecting the Ethernet cable as well but it didn't work.  Then I took out all my important files by connecting it to another macbook and formatted the hard drive. Then tried to install OS again.  But still didn't work. I checked on you tube and changed the hard drive cable as well. Still didn't work. I cannot install OS X Lion on my MacBook Pro. Installing time is in negative hours. (-2,147,483,648 hours). Seriously looking for help.

  • In downloading a photo from someone who used a 'free' sharing service, my Macbook Pro has acquired a virus-like extension called Genieo that I can't get rid of.

Please help me get rid of Genieo once and for all! When downloading a photo for work that someone shared with a 'free' sharing service, my MacBook Pro has acquired a persistent virus-like thing that opens as my Firefox homepage - no matter what. I have faithfully followed all instructions on removing and unsintalling this parasite both from my computer and from Firefox . I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox Mozilla as well. All to no avail. Please help.

In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:
#From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select ''Add-ons'', or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the ''Tools'' menu and click ''Add-ons''.
#Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the ''Extensions'' button on the left side of the window.
#You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
#To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the ''Remove'' button. You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
#Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the ''Restart now'' link in the message.

    Hi LamboMong,
    just try this:
    http://refit.sourceforge.net
install, reboot twice and choose the Windows-Partition on next startup.
(The apple-bootloader doesn't display all bootable harddisks.
With rEFIt you can boot from all partitions/harddisks on your computer.)
I hope that will solve your problem.

yes you need the updates and patches.
Only some of the drivers that Windows will automatically install at times
and always make sure to insure it is using restore points
do all the maintenance andsuch as normal
use MS Security Essentials for AV is really top notch
    Clean disk space
Use WinClone new program to inisure you have a restore image

You can force quit by holding the power button down for extended period.
During boot up hold down the Option key and choose your Macintosh HD OSX.
In >System Preferences> Startup Disk>choose your internal OSX System as Default.
