Sharing files on a VISTA machine with my iMac via network domain.

As I always say, forgive me. I am new to this Mac world. I love it, but being an admin for a network of 300 PCs and trying to get this iMac to join the gang isn't as simple as I had hoped.
FWIW this iMac has admitmac running on it.
I want to share all the users files on her Vista machine that she wants on her new iMac I am configuring, and I want to be able to get on her iMac and pull them over to it via the network... looking for the easiest, no-nonsense way to do that... though with Vista involved, I know that may be a problem.
Oh, Kappy rocks.

  • Sharing files between XP & Vista Computers

I've set up Network Magic on my XP & Vista operating system computers. Works great from Vista to XP. Can share files perfectly. However I need the reverse. I need to share the files from the XP machine on My Vista machine. I get an error message that the Vista machine cannot access files even though the machines are communicating. I've set up windows firewall correctly on both machines, so I don't believe it's a firewall issue, but not absolutely positive. Any help would sure be appreciated. I've troubleshooted for a week & am about ready to take it to a professional computer repair center. I've tried pinging the other machine and get a timeout error, which leads me to believe there may be a communication problem. If anyone has any suggestions, I would sure appreciate it. I'm just about ready to throw in the towel. I thought that networking 2 computers would be the simplest task. It's turned into one of the most complex nightmares I've ever had to deal with on computers. Thanks for any help.

I double checked everything and file and printer sharing is turned on everywhere I can find to turn it on. Windows firewalls are configured correctly and have file & printer sharing on. I even turned both firewalls off & still was unable to access files on the XP machine. Internet works great on both machines. I can do a screen shot of the XP machine on the Vista machine and everything checks out as being connected & working properly. Something somewhere is blocking file access from the XP machine, but I cannot figure what it could be. I've uninstalled anything that I thought might be causing a problem and still get the "cannot access shared folder" message. It suggests a firewall issue, but as far as I can tell, there is no firewall blocking file sharing. The files share perfectly on the XP machine when I try to access the Vista files. It just won't do the reverse and when I try to use the networked printer on the Vista machine, the queue just holds the job forever and never prints. I also get a  timeout error when I try to ping the XP machine from the Vista machine. I get a "file path not found" error when I try to connect to the drive using Vista's networking controls. The XP computer icon only shows up once in awhile and when I do a map network drive command, it says it cannot find the path even though the path exists and is typed correctly. Here is all the information about my system. I certainly appreciate any suggestions as to what might get this network finally sharing files from my Vista machine. Thanks.

  • Can see the shared folders from my vista machine, but cannot get into them

I was looking through these forums last night, and thanks to someone elses post, I was able to make it so that my Vista machine can SEE my Mac over the network. So I can see the computer, I can see what folders I had set on the mac as "shared", but if I try to open them, Winblows throws up an error that the network path is inaccessible...I may not have permission...blah blah blah. The Mac is connected to the network wirelessly, whereas my PC is hooked up through an ethernet cable (don't know if this matters or not). What settings do I need to check/adjust in Leopard so that my Winblows machine will talk to it? All I want to do is some simple file transfers, nothing complicated.

Thank you for your reply. Unless I overlooked something, Windows Sharing does not seem to exist in Leopard. I remember it being there with Tiger, but I did not see that particular option with Leopard. My firewall settings seem to be okay, as I was able to communicate with the Tiger machine and the other Windows machines currently with no issues.

  • I want to pair my iPhone 3GS (OS 3.1) with my iMac via Bluetooth

I am a bit disappointed that Bluetooth doesn't seem to be very mature in the iPhone. But maybe I'm just clueless as to how to get it working, and, once it's working, it will be good.
My problem is that I can't even discover my iPhone (I have scanned using my iMac with the Bluetooth Setup Assistant app as well as with my other phone, a Samsung SGH-X680). Actually, I was able to discover it once with my iMac and then proceeded with the pairing process. The assistant displayed a sequence of digits in large font and said that I should make sure that same number appears on the iPhone. But nothing happened on the iPhone, it seemed oblivious.
My iPhone's Bluetooth settings are "ON" and it says "Now Discoverable". It also seems to be unable to discover any other devices (like my other phone and the iMac, which both have Bluetooth enabled and are set to be discoverable), it will just say "Searching…" for minutes on end without finding anything.
Please let me know what, if any, options there are that will let me exchange files between my computer and my iPhone via Bluetooth. (I am aware that I can exchange files via USB cable.)
    Thanks.

Thank you for the clarification. I find it very stupid that I can't transfer files with Bluetooth. I hope a future software update will add Bluetooth file sharing.

  • Connect MacBook Air with my iMac via Wifi

How can I link my Mac Book air to my iMac, via WiFi, to transfer respectively synchronize data between both of them.
    Thx

There are a few different ways of getting this accomplished.
Method 1: Airdrop. If both computers are Airdrop capable, simply enter Airdrop on each computer, wait until they see each other and then connect and share.
Method 2: WiFi Router. If both computers are on the same WiFi router network and file sharing is enabled on the computers, you can browse the contents of the source computer and copy/move to the target.
Method 3: Ad Hoc. If no WiFi router is available, you can simply create a wireless ad hoc network on one of the computers and complete the transfers in that manner.
There are probably a couple other methods out there, but those are the main 3 that come to mind.
    Cheers!

  • Ipad and iphone do not synch with my imac via wifi; any ideas?

Synchronising my contacts on the iphone and ipad with my imac seems to require me to connect using USB, then open iTunes; neither will synchronise via wifi.  I have set both the iPhone and iPad to synch automatically when connected to power and via wifi to the imac, but it doesn't work.
I am running MAC OS 10.7.5 and iOS 6.1.3.  Can anyone explain what's wrong?  thanks

Bluetooth Pairing is not available, apart from Airdrop.

  • Sharing Files between Windows Vista and Macbook Pro

    Hi everyone!
I have just bought my first Macbook Pro and I love it. I am running Windows Vista on my desktop and connect wirelessly to the internet via a Netgear router. I have managed to connect to the internet with the Macbook Pro wirelessly too.
I am not sure how to set up file sharing between the PC and Macbook - can anyone point me to some SIMPLE instructions please?
    Many thanks

this is a wonderful article! thanks so much!
only one small change though. you don't really need to create another user ID to access the windows machine. i used my existing ID and it logged on fine!
but still, thanks for the rest of the article. i was totally lost without it...

  • Mac Book pro can't access some shared files on a windows machine. Please Help!!!

I have a early 2013 Mac Book Pro running Mac osx 10.8.3. I also have a 2002ish dell desktop. I have file sharing turned on for several drives on the dell and the mac finds and connects to the dell. I can also see the shared hard drives, but when i try to access certian files on the hard drvies the mac said something like you do not have permissions to access this folder. The folder has a little red icon in the corner and in the get info window it said that I have custom access. Also when i try to logon to the dell from the mac using connect as I enter the username for the windows account. There is no pasword so I leave that blank. When i click login it still said in finder that i was logged in as guest. Any help with either problem would be great. I don't know if the problems are linked or what, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
    -Thanks!!!

Check topic E3 at this webpage: Time  Machine  -  Troubleshooting.  See if it can shed any light on the issue.

  • Vista interfering with MacOSX graphics via BootCamp

I'm new to the MacOSX platform and love it. Won't be going back to regular PC hardware unless absolutely necessary.
I have the newest fully loaded iMac (3.06Ghz, 4GB Ram, 8800GS video) and I'm having an issue with running Vista under bootcamp when rebooting back to OSX. Every time I'm in Vista, then reboot in OSX, the graphics seemed to be under-clocked in OSX. Its seems to be rendering at a power saver setting speed, so games and effects within OSX are slower (by as much as 75%).
My assumption is that Vista's power settings profile is forcing the GPU to down-clock, but it weird cause this still happens if the profile in Vista is set to High Performance. The only fix I've found is to manually re-force the power settings by changing the power scheme in Vista to power saver or balanced, then force it back to High Performance, then immediately reboot back into OSX. Even if it's already set to the High Performance setting, re-forcing this power profile is the only way I can get the full GPU back when rebooting back into OSX.
Does anyone know of a fix (even if it's command line) that will force the GPU back to full clock speeds in OSX in case I forget to apply this sudo fix before rebooting?
    Thanks!

Issue occurred on 10.5.2 and is still occurring in 10.5.3

Ok I think you've missed the point of what's occurring here entirely...
First, show me where it says any of the Intel Mac computers have both a BIOS chip and an EFI ROM in them. To my knowledge, they don't, they only have an EFI ROM. So your statement that bootcamp by-passes the EFI ROM to interface with a Windows BIOS doesn't hold water, cause Mac's don't have a BIOS at all. If it had a BIOS chip, wouldn't I be able to use a PC program like SpinRite (www.grc.com) on an iMac to repair hard drive sector problems, just like I can with every other PC that has a BIOS chip?
Also, I have rEFIt bootloader installed allowing me to choose which partition it boots into, OSX or Windows, without the assistance of Bootcamp Assistant.
Second, I will say it again, I'm well aware the OS's run independently of each other. I know none of the OSX software or drivers are running when Windows is loaded and vise versa. None the less, when Windows loads its ACPI power scheme settings to the hardware within the iMac, the setting settings ARE being translating over to the OSX side.
I'll post a video of it if you don't believe me. World of Warcaft in OSX runs normally at 160-220fps in Ironforge when the GPU is running at full speed. However, if I go into Windows Vista, let the OS sit idle for 5-10mins, then reboot into OSX, then run WoW, the fps drops to 60 max. Areas that run at 60-80fps are crippled to 15-20 max. Also, all OSX effects like spaces are choppy. This occurs regardless of what power scheme setting is loaded in Vista, and the power scheme must be forced to High Performance JUST BEFORE A REBOOT in order for OSX to run the GPU at full power again.
Not to be insulting, but I again and would appreciated an explanation from you or from someone that actually knows how Mac hardware work on how the power scheme settings, from an OS that is supposedly running completely independently from OSX, are being transposed over to OSX AFTER A REBOOT.
The only explanation I can think of is that the settings are being placed onto the GPU ROM by Vista's ACPI and OSX is not resetting these settings (due to bad driver writers) during boot. Every other *nix system I've worked with would reset the GPU settings during boot up, so why isn't Mac?.
I don't know how much more clearer I can make this issue.

  • Sharing folders on a XP machine to my iMac

Have a XP machine on same wireless net as my lovely new iMac. I want to share a couple of folders on the XP machine so I can see them in finder on the imac. I think I've shared out the Xp folders in question properly (simply because I see the little hand icon now as part of the folder icone), but I don't see these folders on Finder on the imac.
I've still got a McAfee firewall running (XP firewall turned off as a result). Could this be the problem?

the firewall could be a problem. do you have 445 forwarded? also how are you trying to connect? try connect to server (cmd-k) and type smb://(ip address of XP), of course assuming you are sharing via samba

  • Has any one come up with a solution to the "the disk was not ejected properly" when using time machine with an iMac and seagate back up drive?

I recently bought an iMac and love it.
Only proplem I have is I keep getting an error message "the disk was not ejected properly"
Everything is backing up fine on my Seagate 2TB external USB drive.
Each time there is access on the seagate and it stops in between needing to back up again I get this message.
    Can anyone help?

    The drive is malfunctioning.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, it has to be replaced. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Printing to a printer connected to an iMac via network from Vista PC

I have a Canon PIXMA MP610 connected to a new iMac (Leopard) via USB it works fine on the iMac. I shared the device on the iMac as instructed in the Apple help section. On my network, I have 2 Dell laptops running Vista Ultimate. I installed the lasted drivers on the Dells and was able to find the shared printer on the network and successfully add it to both Dell PCs. The pc's can see status (i.e. ready, idle, etc..) and even ink and paper status. When I try to print to the printer, the document spools in the queue, but then just disappears and nothing comes out of the printer.
    Please help!

I just learned that Mac's printer is shown to network as a *PostScript printer* regardless of its type. The guide http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html (for Windows XP) tells how you have to define your printer's name. But you must select a driver for a Apple printer (b/w of color matching yours), don't use the printer's native driver (unless it is a PS printer).
There is no Apple drivers available in my Vista Premium. But fortunately PostScript is well standardized and you can select from any of PS-drivers. i took +HP Color LaserJet 4700 PS+ and now my +Epson Stylus Photo 870+ works fine!

  • Sharing iTunes library between 2 computers and 2 iPods via network disk?

    Hi,
Me and the missus each got a laptop -hers a PC and mine a MacBook.
We both use iTunes and we've both got an iPod.
Recently I bought an Aiport Express and hooked it up with a 1TB WD MyBook -is there any way that we can share our iTunes library via the network disk, so that we can 1. have full read/write access from both laptops and 2. both sync our iPods?
Furthermore, is there a way for iTunes to monitor the music folder, so instead of me dragging music into iTunes (e.g. CD's that were ripped with other software than iTunes) iTunes would just update every once in a while, to check for new mp3's (kinda like Picasa does with pictures)?
More questions most likely will pop up, but this is the most pressing ones.
    Thanks in advance
    /Jakob F.

*is there a way for iTunes to monitor the music folder, so instead of me dragging music into iTunes*
iTunes doesn't support folder watching, anything you add to a folder on your hard drive has to be manually added to the iTunes Library: Adding Content to iTunes
You could have a look at this Applescript for folder watching on a Mac: Doug's Applescripts - Folder Actions and iTunes or this program for Windows: iTunes Folder Watch for Windows
You'd need to do a deeper bit of research on both as I don't know if either would work from a folder that's effectively not on either computer

  • Can I get the Mac address in Audit logs of Active directory server for the user's machine which connect to the network/Domain

    Hello All,
I am trying to get the information of all the user's who connect to our Domain network by signing in using the domain account. For this I am using the Windows audit group policies ( I am not sure of there is any other way). I can see when the user tries
to login to the network there is a audit event created on the AD/DC server. I can see the Kerberos authentication and logon/logoff events in the audit events under event viewer.
However the info which is being populated in these events include :- Hostname, IP address, Username and so on... But I can't see the MAC address of the user machine/system. Is there any way I can
get the Mac address of the endpoint system as its one of the important criteria for our project.
Any inputs on this would be appreciated, incase if there is any other way other than group policies please suggest.
    Thanks,

If you use DHCP, you can query the DHCP server. There's no builtin
method to get the MAC address directly.
