Sharing files on Intel mac

Does anyone know if there is a way i can share files between my macbook pro and my windows partition? I used boot camp and put windows on my computer too. I want to be able to use my music and movies on both the mac and the windows side. Is there a way to do it? Thank you!

If you format the Windows partiton with FAT32 (max 32GB).
Mac OS X will read and write to your Windows partition in that format only
If you use NTFS Mac OS can read it but not write files to it or rename it.

  • How to edit a shared file on my Mac?

    Hi,
Is it possible to edit a shared file on my Mac?
I know it is possible on the web, using Numbers/Pages/Keynote for iCloud Beta. But I was wondering if it is also possible to download and edit the file.
I think it is also important that the file automatically updates himself when edited on the Mac, so the other user could see my changes.
So I don't have to download the file --> edit it --> upload the file.
Hopefully there is a solution for this problem, otherwise I'm hoping this will come in the near-future!
    Kind regards,
    Berend

Since most flash drives are formatted for PC's rather than Macs, if you plan to use it only with a Mac, when it's plugged in, you can click on it in Disk Utility and partition it GUID and Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Note that if you've already got files stored on it, partitioning it will erase them.

  • Copied files on Intel Mac don't open

How strange can it get? If I copy files via ethernet or key-chain stick to the new Intel Mac the files do not open. XPress docs and fonts just have a dark rectangular symbol with green type on it saying exec. They are ok if I burn them first on a CD and then copy them. Is their something I ought to know?
    Please help.

Unless the files are corrupt (possible when copied over a network albeit not entirely likely) you can try to reset the files back to their proper settings. For those who prefer to not use the Terminal, there is an application called batChmod that puts a GUI on the UNIX command for changing permissions although from my tests and past experiences, extensions play the vital role. I generally use the Terminal for this (and will explain more in detail later if people want to go that route/use it).
    - A document's default setting is Owner (Read/Write), Group (Read Only), Everyone (Read Only) or 644 in the Terminal.
    - 'Get Info' on the file and make sure that the proper extension is added to the file name. In Terminal, you can rename a file using the 'mv' command
(example, mv test mv test.rtf would append the .rtf to the file named test).
    - While in "Get Info" use the "Open with:" pop up/tab and see if your application appears as a potential. If not, use the 'Other..." option and manually locate it. If it is grayed out then the Finder/System doesn't consider it to be usuable.
    - Try dropping the modified document onto the application and see if it launches manually. Failing that, try opening the document from within the application.
    - failing that, try launching the application first so that the system is aware of its existence and then try opening the documents/assigning the default app to it via Get Info after. This happened to me initially with a new user who had their Word documents (.doc) opening in TextEdit despite Office being installed. Additionally, my experience with Mac OS X Server and managed applications for users showed that sometimes an application (particularly a third party app) would be interpreted by the Server/App management as a generic preference file and not be registered/implimented. Once I ran the application once on the server, Workgroup Manager and the app management setting recognized its existence and all was well. This is a long shot but anything is possible!

I would recommend you use Videolan's VLC Player, which has now been updated.
This is now Intel Mac compatible and can play many different file formats including ASF, WMV and WMA.

  • Sharing files from another mac

I would like to share files from my macbook pro to the macbook air. I went into the pro and turned on the sharing ability in the user file. when I looked at this from the air, and clicked on the music, a message came up that said " I dont have permission to see these contents". how can i change this so I can use the files?

In order to access files on another computer you must log into an account on that computer otherwise you log into the Guest account. The Guest account only gives you access to files in the Shared folder.

  • Sharing files with other mac users on iCloud

May I share files I store on iCloud with other users?

If you want to try online sharing you might like to look at SugarSync:
    https://www.sugarsync.com/products/sync_sharing.html
    - this page says:
    Collaborate with shared folders
SugarSync keeps all your shared files up-to-date and in sync for powerful collaboration with your virtual team. With folder sharing, you can collaborate on projects by giving a person, or a group of people, access to a shared folder on your computer. No more wasting time emailing individual files and tracking the latest versions. Just send an email invitation to your clients, coworkers, or family members to join your folder.
Sync folders of information across teams
Folder members can sync a shared folder directly to their own computers. Any member of a shared folder can have their own copy of the folder on their own computer. Folder members can edit files locally. Updates are reflected for everyone as soon as the file is saved.
I've not tried this so you would need to investigate to see whether it suited your requirements.
There is also a new program, Cloud App, which makes sharing files simple: it runs as a background process and you just drag files to the menu bar icon. Storage is with Heroku and Amazon: it's free with a limit of 10 files per day, maximum 25MB per file, $45 per year for unlimited files, maximum 250MB per file.
Another possible option is YouSendIt. It provides the facility for you to upload files and send an email to a recipient telling them how to download it: and it's also possible with all but the free plan for others to upload a file for you. The free version allows you to send a maximum file size of 50MB with no upload by others: $9.99 per month gets you 2GB sized files in either direction, and there are upgraded plans.

  • Web packaged file on Intel Mac

Can some one please help, Ive got a training application
running in a web browser (Authorware 7) for both PC and Mac. The
Authoware lesson sends data out of Authoware via PostURL to a asp
page which then puts it into a access database. All works fine on
PC and on the old Macs powermac i think there called, but as soon
as i run the lessons on the new Intel Macs in Rosetta mode, i cant
get any data out of the lesson, it seems to block calling the url,
ive tried the Readurl command aswell.
It seems that Rosetta and the web player arnt playing nice
    together.
    Please Please help.

I think there's a known, and unresolved (and likely to remain
unresolved) issue with PostURL on a Mac. In fact, I'm kinda
    surprised it
seems to work on a non-Intel Mac as this issue has been
    around for a
    long time.
    This page:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/authorware/releasenotes/5/releasenotes_5.htm#problems
indicates the issue is just with IE on the Mac (and for 5.2,
    though I
don't doubt the issue remains with version 7).
So I'd recommend you make a simple test application that just
    does a
PostURL to the ASP page and test it on both platforms. Does
    it work on
the Mac and not the PC? If so, then the common workaround is
    to
restructure the ASP page to accept 'GET' statements instead
    of 'POST'
statements and use the Authorware ReadURL function instead. I
    know
you've said you did, but I'd test both thoroughly as, if
    neither works,
then you're pretty much out of luck unless you can use a
    third-party
    Xtra, like SecureNet

  • Cloud Computing / Sharing files among multiple Macs

    Greetings,
I'll start by saying that I briefly searched for my answer on the board with no luck. So sorry if it's out there but I couldn't find it.
To get to the point, I have two main macs (desktop & laptop) that I use interchangeably. I would like to be able to access the same files with both computers and more importantly, stay in sync with those files. Example, I work on my FileMaker Pro database on my Mac Pro, then when it's time to leave for the office, I have to copy the file over to my MacBook (if I remember to do that). Which means that I always have two files out there at the same time. This has been ok to deal for one file but I'm finding more and more apps that I'd like to share the files with (Things, Quicken, Filemaker, iBank, OmniFocus...etc).
I do have a MobileMe account (prev .mac) but not sure if I can do it with that or iDisk. I would love it to work as seamlessly as my Mail, Address Book, and iCal syncs with MobileMe. What Mac or 3rd party options do I have for this feature/service? And can someone explain how it would work? Meaning, when I launch an app like iBank, would my app be working on the file in the "cloud"? or would the service/app push the file down to my computer for me to work on it locally and then push it back up when I close the app?
    Hope my question was clear but here it is again;
What service or application will allow me to share files between my Macs?
    Thanks!

    Jorge:
You can't do that with the alias system. That'st because each user will have a totally independent library from the other users. Any edits made will be saved in that particularly users iPhoto Library folder and not be available to others.
Tutorial #4, however, does discuss how to setup such a system.
There is a couple of caveats to this system. Each new set of photos should be added to the source group in it's own folder, preferable dated, so that each user can check to see what's are the new files and import them into their own library. Also any user who deletes a photos from their library does not delete it from the source group. That has to be done manually. That can be good or bad depending your your point of view. That is, one user cann't delete a source file that another users wants and needs for a slideshow, etc.

  • Common URL format for sharing file paths between Mac and Windows?

    Hi -
I have to integrate several Macs into a Windows environment. We need to be able to copy and paste file paths to share between all machines. Is there a common URL format that can be used between the platforms?
    On Windows, I have:
    \\server\share\file
    On the Mac:
    smb://server/share/file
    Thank you for your help,
    Steve

On Windows you have what is known as a "UNC".
On the Mac, you have a "URL". It starts with the protocol to use "smb" then gives the path to the item using standard conventions.
    UNC is Microsoft mainly.
The only way I know for Windows to use a URL is with an application like a web browser or ftp client.
On the Mac, you can use UNCs but they must be modified as follows.
    In Terminal:
    smbclient \\\\servername\\sharename\\filename -U username
And enter a password if prompted.
Notice that you must double up the slashes. This is due to how UNIX shells treat the backslash.
You will connect to the share, but it will only be in Terminal.

  • Sharing files between 2 Macs

I am trying to enable file sharing between my new iMac and my (2007) model Macbook Pro. I am succesfully able to share files from the old mac to the new one, as I can connect via the macbook,  but when I try and connect from the new Mac it "fails".   Everything is set up in System Preferences ok (I think) and I have restarted both macs, but still not conecting via the new mac. Any ideas on why this is happening?

  • Troubles playing certain AVI files on Intel Mac

I have an Archos 604 WiFi and previously an Archos AV500. On my old PPC machines, the AVI files created by the Archos played just fine in Quicktime. However, I recently upgraded to all Intel-based Macs and I can no longer play the files. Here's the info for one of the files I can't play:
    Type: AVI
    Duration: 47'00"
    Video: [MPG4], Resolution: 640x480
    Bitrate: 1516kb/s, 29FPS
    Audio: [ADPCM], 257kb/s, 32000Hz, Stereo
I have the latest Divx 6 and Flip4Mac codecs installed. The only thing I don't have is 3ivx which doesn't have an Intel version available currently.
When I attempted to play one of these files, the video seems OK, but the audio is nothing but a little static for the first few seconds and then nothing is audible.
I also have the latest MPlayer 2 and VLC and I'm not getting any better results with those players.
Any idea what codec for Quicktime I can try? I haven't tried Perian yet, but it's on my To-Do list for tonight. If there's nothing I can use until 3ivx 5.0 is released, is there an easy Windows application I can run in Parallels to reencode the audio to MP3 or AAC or something else that'll work with Qt/Divx/Flip4Mac?
    Thanks

  • Sharing files between a Mac and PC

I have 2 Mac's and 2 PC's and they are all on a network via Airport Express and all connect to the Internet just fine. What I'd like to do is share files to and from all the computers on my network. I can see the Mac's just fine and copy files between them as well, however I cannot "mount" the PC's. When I go into network I see library, Mshome,My Network,Servers,Workgroup. In Ms Home I see one of the pc's and in Network and workgroup I see the other PC. When I click connect on either of the pc's regardless of which folder they are in i get the spinning lollipop and then a message that the alias needs to be fixed or deleted. Can anyone help me? I've turned on Windows sharing on my Mac and I've turned on sharing on the folders on my PC that I would like to have access to. What am I missing? I should mention that I know nothing about PC's. Thanks ahead of time for any and all help!

  • Advice on sharing files between two Macs please?

    Hello all,
I have two G4s, one running 10.3.9 and one running 10.4. They are both connected to an ethernet router for internet. I would like to share files between these two computers as well as share a printer connected to the G4 running Panther.
After reading the Apple docs, I'm a bit confused, so I've posted here for clarification if possible.
From what I understand I can simply "turn on file sharing" on both and then grab and move files to the "Public" folder only of each G4?
I can also simply "turn on printer sharing" and share my printer with the Tiger G4?
In either case, will the G4s mount on each other's desktops?
Thanks in advance for any clarification.

Have you actually tried it yet? You're not clear on that bit!
It should just work. Be aware that shaing over ethernet is all about IP adresses. Normally you wouldn't think about this, but your router will probably assign these to the two macs automatically. In theory.
A good thing to know is, if you are on Mac A, with Sharing set up as ON on the other Mac (B), you can log in AS THE USER on Mac B, thereby gaining total access to that machine - not just the shared folder. However, if you log on as a "guest" you will only get into the shared folder.
The thing to remember is, go to preferences in the Finder (nont System Prefs) and click the Sidebar tab at the top. Make sure that Connected Servers and Netwrk are ticked to appear in the sidebar.
Any window you open in the FInder will now have a Network icon on the left. Touch this, and the other Mac shold appear (after a delay) like a disk. Click it, and then you can click through to log into it.
You can set up network disks to automount at startup too.
    Good luck.
