Sharing files via Airport

Hello,
I would like to share files (those in my public folder) exclusively with my girlfriend. Each of us has a macbook and use the same Airport connection . Could someone kindly point me to the relevant page for this?
Thanks.
PS: I tried with Sys pref> Sharing file but didn't go far.

Have you marked the folder you want to share as being shared? Select a folder, press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window then check the box labeled Shared. You can share files, folders, or disk drives on your Desktop this way. I believe that File Sharing on your computer indicates an IP address as well as a hostname. Use the IP address from the client in the form: afp://10.0.1.xxx or leave the search field blank and just click on the Browse button. A list of available servers should appear. It may take several minutes before servers appear so be patient.
Ideally both computers should be using the same version of OS X. You haven't provided any of that information.
BTW be sure you have turned on File Sharing - not Internet Sharing or Screen Sharing. These are all different.

If you delete it from the computer, it may eventually be deleted from the backup.

  • MacBookPro with airport extr. locks up iMac G4 sharing ethernet via airport

I've found that my MacBook (airport extreme) causes my 800MHz iMac G4 sharing an ethernet connection via airport (non-extreme) to lock up pretty regularly (i.e. the iMac locks up). The more data I'm transfering the faster it locks up. I also have a 1G iBook G4 which works flawlessly via airport extreme to the same iMac. The iMac is still on and the mouse moves just there is the spinning ball of death and nothing happens when you click anywhere. I have to force shutdown the iMac (hold the power button for 5 seconds) and restart.
Is this known? Is there a fix or do I have to wait for a firmware fix?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    Hey thanks for the welcome!
The error message said " there is an error in connecting to ..."
OK ( after just checking it again) go figure - I turned off sharing ethernet connection to computers using airport on the iMac - and turned it back on and voila! I am now connected using the PB - ??? Must have been a reset issue?
lets see if this is a solid connection...
    Thanks for the fast reply!

  • Sharing network via Airport, can browse but no mail, smtp or pop3

I have the G5 connected via ethernet to the router box they gave me, fine mail and browsing are super duper, So now I have the Laptop G4 (Both on 10.4.7)
On the G5 I crated a network and enabled internet sharing in system prefs using Airport (No airport base stations, just the computer to computer) On the G4 I joined the network, and could not get to any web sites, Ahhh Little Snitch! So I turned off little snitch on the G5 and low and behold the G4 now has splendid access with safari, I am actually on the G4 penning this. But I want to use only the G4 to send and receive mails (The G4 is with me all the time, and the mails get so far out of sync) But the .mac and my 4 pop3 mail boxes all time out. Is it possible to access mail through the shared connection? Thanks Jed

I don't know if you have solved your problem but I think I can help you. I will keep it simple because you seem to know what is plotting.
    1. On your G4 laptop, open your system prefs and go to 'Sharing',
    2. Now, click on the 'Firewall' tab. To your right, click on the button labeled 'New'.
    3. On the sheet displayed, the first dropdown list is pre-sellected as 'CVS', sellect it end change it to 'Other'.
3.1. Now your fields will activate for input. In the field labeled 'TCP Port Number', type '110' (this is the default port number for POP and POP3).
3.2. In the last field labeled 'Description', type your own descroption like 'POP3 port for G4' (just an idea). Save your settings by pressing the 'OK' button.
You should now be ready to retrieve your messages using your chosen mail app.
Follow the same instructions as above to open a SMTP port, but this time type '25' in the field labeled 'TCP Port Number'.
Give it a meaningfull name like 'SMTP port for G4' (yet another idea). And that is it!
Hope it was helpfull. Kind regards.

How do I share files between my various Macs on my Airport network?

The same as if they were connected viaEthernet.
To make Mac_A visible to Mac_B:
On Mac_A go to System Preferences->Sharing preference pane and enable File Sharing.
On Mac_B go to the Finder and select "Connect to Server..." from the Go menu. Click on the Mac_A icon and enter a username and password for a Mac OS X user defined on Mac_A.

  • Sharing files via wii fii?

Trying to upload photos from Panasonic LUMIX DMC-SZ9, to my Mac mini, connection via wii fii seems to be fine.  But camera "doesn't find carpets to be shared with".
I've tryied every combination in my Mac. Nothing seems to work.  Suggestions will be very much appreciated.

    Correcting the typo's:
TXS , BDAqua, but yes, Image Capture and iPhoto works fine.  The problem is reduced to reckon if the transfer is doable via Wii Fii.  Panasonic comes with an app. that is suitable for PC's but not for Mac's.
Also there is an app. in iTunes that works fine with iPhone.  (Always talking about Wii Fii connexions.)
Camera (Panasonic LUMIX DMC SZ9) has a very fine Wii Fii feature that immediately finds the network, and with the appropriate BioNets, also the Mac.  But it seems to paralize in front of the gate, so speaking, and cannot "see" into the Mac to find a shareable file or app to work in or with.

  • How to use iBook for sharing internet via airport card... can it be done?

The title says most of it all. I want to share the internet coming from the wall through the airport card in my iBook. I've made it work, however I'm concerned about doing it securely. Can it be done securely? If so, how? I've read in the help files about using the firewalls and such, but I'm having trouble making heads or tails out of it all. How about a primer on basic wifi security in the iBook's Airport card environment? I'm not as savvy as I used to be! Thanks in advance for your help.

    ride a bike:
    Requirements for wireless Internet access
To use AirPort to access the Internet wirelessly using Mac OS X, you need:
An Apple AirPort Card, AirPort Extreme Card, or a compatible third-party wireless card
An AirPort Base Station, Time Capsule, AirPort Express, or an AirPort-enabled computer acting as a software base station (if you are hosting an AirPort wireless network)
    Internet access
Some Internet service providers (ISPs) are not currently compatible with AirPort.
If you’re setting up an AirPort Base Station, Time Capsule, or AirPort Express to connect to the Internet, you need an account with an ISP. When you set up your account with your ISP, you were most likely given account information (such as user or account name, password, phone number, and possibly other information). Have this information ready when you set up your device.
If you are connecting your base station to an Ethernet network that already has an Internet connection, you may need an account name and password to access the network. Check with the network administrator if you’re not sure.

  • Shared library via Airport Extreme and Bonjour

    Hello,
I share my itunes library via a new airport extreme on the Macs in my house. I would like to access the library via the windows machines (via bonjour).
I have an external hard drive attached to the airport extreme. I have full access to this hard drive via the windows machines.
I have my iTunes libary on this hard drive. iTunes on the Mac's access this library with ease.
    Thank you,

it might be worth checking in over at the Airport for Windows forum:
    Airport for Windows

  • Sharing Internet via Airport Extreme using a USB wireless modem

I have had to go to NextG access using a USB modem (only option). We previously succesfully had the second iMac sharing the internet connection on an ethernet-connected wireless service. Now, I cannot get the other iMac to share the connection, because there is no option to choose the USB modem.
Another problem is the USB modem is top-dog - it won't connect unless I turned off anything else using anything remotely looking like wireless (even when I have my bluetooth phone connected to another USB hub). I can connect to the NextG network after disconnecting everything else and THEN reconnect, but I just can't get the Internet sharing going. I have also had the iMac freezing, demanding a power-off-power-on (unheard of in my experience!).
Is there any remedy for the Internet sharing at all? Configuring a different channel or something on Airport? Using one of the other config options?
I think there are something like USB-to-Ethernet adaptors (pretty costly here in Australia) and don't want to shell out for one if it doesn't work. Same with a third-party router. I also wondered if I should just forget about using Airport completely and run a few metres of crossover cable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Steven, I know this question has been answered and is a couple of months old but I think you may be able to help with my set up? I have a Thomson speedtouch 510 v6 modem router provided by Karoo (UK). My other Belkin N modem router has just bust [again] so the Speedtouch is my old faithful backup device. Now, i've never been able to get on ichat with the Belkin as its a mimo n speed and this is apparently not compatible; So i'm now on ethernet with the st510 and have just set up ports for ichat thanks to a thread called http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2719419&#2719419.
What I want to know from you (because I really need a wireless router to get me off this ethernet support system and back on airport) is how you're getting on with the st510 / airport extreme combo now and can you use ichat on it? If so does your connection doctor say full cone in network settings or something else? As I say, I really want to use ichat and have never been able to in 3 years of owning my Macbook Pro. Hope to hear back from you Steven. Regards Steph

  • Midi files via airport express?

Can I send midi files from my imac to an airport express? I'm thinking about using my computer to control an electronic piano that plays midi files. I've been told I could use wireless transmitter/receivers like m-audio's midair or CME's widi-x8, but I'd like to stick with apple products if possible. Any thoughts?

Sorry if this follow-up question is stupid: I looked at the Airfoil website and wanted to make sure that midi files are considered an audio file. If so, it would mean I can send a midi file of a piano performance from itunes with Airfoil over the Airport Express to play on my electronic keyboard. Is my understanding correct? Thanks for your help and patience.

  • Sharing Internet via Airport with Firewall on doesn't work....correctly

My imac has an ethernet hi-speed cable connection and I want to share it over the airport so that I can connect to it with my macbook and iphone.
Everything works fine, until I turn on my firewall. Once the firewall is turned on and I try to connect with my macbook or iphone, neither can get an ip address.
If I keep my firewall turned off, it shares the internet connection wonderfully and both devices get their ip's.
Does anyone know how to open the firewall up so that it allows my macbook (and such) to get an ipaddress?

They should be able to get an IP address with the firewall on or off. However they will have difficulties with other services.
The best solution is to get an inexpensive wireless router.
Another (much more complicated) option is to use WaterRoof to configure the firewall so that the appropriate ports are open on the iMac's AirPort side.

  • Internet sharing via airport woes

    Hi,
apparantly an thunderstorm fried my ethernet-card in my MBP this morning. Now I am struggling to get internet-access via my iBook G3 which has DSL-boradband via ethernet (pPOE) (either via firewire or airport) but don't succeed:
    1) file-sharing eithert via airport or ip over firewire works
    2) I have set up my iBook to share internet via airport, enabled web sharing as HELP recommends.
Internet sharing nevertheless doesn't work for me: error message (in network-status) says (translated from German):
…Airport has self-assigned IP-Address and is maybe not able to connect to the internet.
I have used the built in settings, changed nithing manually. Any ideas?
    Greetings,
    Rolf

  • Sharing Files AFP issue

    Hi,
in my LAN there are 12 macs , some of them got 10.4.5 , others 10.4.11, one has Os 9.2.2
Every machine is sharing files via AFP/SMB (System Preferences /Sharing) , all machines are listed correctly in Network Finder window.
The issue is here: It happens that sometimes , in a random way, some folders (shared or not ..es.Application folder) of a certain machine (for example machine A) are moved to Machine B !!!
No strange activities are recorded in Logs (system, console, afp, smb) except for a restart of afp sharing when a Os9 try to connect to (It fails to connect but don't mind).
Some machines had moved also their Library/Preference folder to another location!
To connect to a share i use a guest account to limit users possibilities,
so i don't understand why some folder that requires special permissions should copy o move to another location..
    Any Idea?

since this issue Os9 client are not enable to connect anymore...
OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301183
With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to the 10.48 machine.
"Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer. The Network preference pane in Mac OS X 10.4 and later still offers the AppleTalk checkbox, but it is for browsing AppleTalk-advertised resources and zones. The subsequent connection must be over TCP/IP."

  • File transfer speed in Shared USB Hard Drive via Airport Extreme

I' am planing to buy one of this, but first I need to know what kind of file transfer speed I can expect when sharing USB drive via Airport Extreme 1000Mbps Ethernet.
    Thanks.
    Message was edited by: Robert81

most likely 14m/sec but normally 10.5 this is ethernet wired and usb attached. wireless would be about 8M/sec
Wired is good enough I use it for Finder copy frequently.

  • HT1145 I can't see my files on my USB shared drive.  It shows there is lots of space taken up, but I can't access the files via my Mac.

I can't see my files on my USB shared drive.  It shows there is lots of space taken up, but I can't access the files via my Mac.  How do I see them?  I also can't see them on my iPad using FileBrowser.

You don't have access to it to configure it via Time Machine? You lost me on that one, Time Machine is used for Backup.
Here is a basic article on the first setup and what you should see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1178
To configure Time Capsule you should be using "Airport Utility" 5.3 or higher that is located in the Utilities folder. You can tell if its version 5.3 because the icon will have blue lines instead of orange lines like the older versions. Since you are running Leopard 10.5.6 and you ran Software Update you are probably already running the latest 5.3 version.
The light flashing amber means you haven't entered enough information so that it can get to the internet. Once you have that info entered the light will turn green.
If your absolutely sure your CAT5 cables are good you can try a hard reset. I think you have to push the reset button on the back and hold it for 5 seconds or so until the amber light blinks rapidly, then when you release the button it does the reset then.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1300?locale=en_US
Hope this helps! If not I would probably call AppleCare support or see if you can exchange it.
