Sharing Firewire Drive

Greetings,
I am very new to Macs ( less than a month ). This is my first post on the Apple Discussion boards.
I am running into my first networking issue. I run a Windows 2000 Active Directory Domain at work, and I have 2 Macs which I do not authenticate to W2K.
My goal is to connect to my co-workers Mac and access files on his Lacie firewire drive.
I have set myself up with an account on his MAC ( Pre-Tiger ), and I logon just fine. I see the folders that are assigned to me. I do not see his firewire drive nor do I know about how to share it. I naively thought that it just appeared.
Any help, if connecting to a firewire drive over a TCP/IP network is possible, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance....
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Greetings MacCasey... no problem, just install Sharepoints on the Mac...
http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
Then just set it to share the FW drive.
Another option is to Loginin with the Mac's Admin User's Name & Password.

  • Trouble backing to a shared firewire drive

I have a firewire drive that's been my time machine drive for my macbook pro for a while now
I always plug it directly into the mac every few days
I upgraded my G5 to Leopard too and read that if you have two machines with Leopard, that you can backup to your time machine drive from a laptop over the network to a FW drive attached to another computer.
so I mounted the drive on my G5, and then mounted it on the desktop of my macbook pro via the network file sharing and TIME MACHINE WON'T WORK!!! It just says the latest backup delayed/failed
and the first time I selected Backup Now, it said the drive couldn't be mounted
    anyone know what to do?

Network backups are not officially supported on any device other than Apple's Time Capsule.

  • Time Machine Backup to Shared Firewire Drive Not Working

    Hello
I know this may have been posted before, but I am looking for a simple troubleshooting / diagnostic process I can follow to resolve my issue:
I have a Imac running Lepoard with all possible software updates. A WD Studio 500GB drive is attached via Firewire 800. The drive has the latest firmware etc. I also have a 15" powerbook G4 (last model) running leopard. All Macs are connected to the a Netgear DG834N router, via ethernet cables.
The Imac and Firewire connected external drive works normally with time machine.
I have shared the external drive on the Imac and given all 'built in' groups read/write permissions.
I can mount the external drive on the powerbook and see the files that are backed up by the Imac, I can traverse the folder tree within the folders contrained in the backup. Double clicking on these folders invokes the 'star trek' style time machine window.
When trying to backup the powerbook, I could see the external drive as a time machine target disk.
The backup failed twice. Having checked the disk a sparse image was created. I tried again a number of times without success - I deleted the sparse image and tried to start again.
This time I could not find the disk in the selection in time machine, a reboot of everything revealed the disk, but when selecting the 'use for backup' button in time machine on the powerbook nothing happens.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a pretty simple problem: time machine does not allow you to backup two computers to the same hard drive or partitioin. the way to fix this is to repartition you WD drive into two partitions, one for each computer. if you already have other data (not from time machine), make three partitons: one for iMac, one for PowerBook, and one for Other. do not put any data other than time machine data on the iMac and PowerBook partitons, always put it in other. you can partiton a disk easily with disk utility, but wait:
_CAUTION: THIS WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOOSE ALL THE DATA ALREADY ON THE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE!_
to avoid this, first use disk utility to make a disk image of the external hard drive, and save it on your internal drive. if the image won't fit (your internal drive doesn't have enough capacity, then you can either erase all the data on already on the hard drive with the reformat, or buy another disk to use for the PowerBook) then, when the disk is partitioned correctly, mount the disk image and copy all the files on it back to the correct* partition of the external hard drive. *if the files on the external hard drive came from the iMac, then put them on the iMac partiton of the drive. if they came from the powerbook, put them in that partition, and if it is not from time machine, put it in othe
    Hope you followed all that!

  • Sharing firewire drive over smb

I have an external Lacie FW400 drive I'm using as a media drive. I need to be able to access this drive from other computers (both windows and linux) via smb.
The Lacie is connected to my Powermac, and is mounted on my desktop. I can access my home folder on the powermac via smb from either linux or windows machines, but the Lacie doesn't show up in my /Users/username/Desktop folder over a smb connection. I am unable to figure out how to access files stored on the Lacie.
Anyone done this before and care to share how they did it?

Answered my own question. Found Share Points application and prefs pane.
    That did the trick!

  • Sharing external FireWire drive between two Mac Pros

I know that sharing an external FireWire drive between two machines (i.e. both connected at the same time) is a very bad things as both will assume that they have exclusive write access to the drive and quite quickly write over what the other machine has just written.
Would it be possible though to mount the drive as read-only on the first machine and in read-write mode on the second? Would this preserve integrity as the second machine would in fact have exclusive write access or would other problems arise?
Thanks for any responses to a stupid question!
    Peter

Mmm, Connect the drive to the private secure network Mac. Connect the two Macs by FireWire and create a network over the firewire connection, configure it to use class C addresses, ie. 169.x.x.x manually and then share the firewire drive to the other Mac (also on a class C network address over firewire).
Both macs will still have their own ethernet network addresses and each network will not be visible from the "other" network (unless you choose to share your internet connection over firewire).
The only caveat here is that the firewire drive will be visible to every other Mac on the secure network that you allow to connect to it (which is why I chose that one, rather than the public Mac). Or can you restrict sharing to only one network ..... didn't think so.

  • 2 iMacs sharing a Firewire Drive

Is is possible to have my 2 iMacs share the same external Firewire drive via Firewire? I have an ethernet hub but it's not quite fast enough for what I need. I want both iMacs using the same hard drive thru firewire... thanks

I'm wondering if there is any software to create a hub or a network drive out there so I can use this drive on 2 machines?

  • Mounting shared network Firewire drive

    Hi,
I've got two Macs on a home network. One has several Firewire drives. Over the network I can see the that Mac and it's drives from my first Mac. Is there a way Automator can automatically mount one of those Firewire drives on my first Mac every morning so I can see it on my Desktop? I'm new to Automator and am still trying to figure out how to create a script for this. Thanks!!!

    OK, ignore the above!
I found out how to mount a remote network drive and then schedule that action in iCal (first create a remote drive alias on your Desktop, then use 'get specific finder items' and 'open finder items' in Automator, then save the action script as a iCal plugin). Yeah!
Next step, now I just have to figure out how to unmount the drive when I'm done with it...

  • "Sharing" external firewire drive with Windows Machine

Have a look at Sharepoints for the Mac. It should provide the services you are looking for.

  • Storing music on Firewire drive and sharing it with Win2000 laptop too

I just got a new 24"iMac and managed to transfer most of my music over from my g4 with a backup of my library. Now, I also have a 160gb Firewire drive that is empty and would like to make a second library of music of just all my cd's around 350 or so and be able to access this from my iMac and also share this music with a Panasonic Toughbook laptop running Windows 2000 with a 100gb hard drive. Anyone done similar / same thing ?? I looked at other posts for an hour or so and just got more confused LOL and was hoping for a direct answer.

as long as the music is on the external drive it does not matter what type of computer you use to access as long as each computer runs itunes. when activating itunes in either os hold down the alt/option button and it will give you the option to access a different library. the complete directions are in itunes help on your computer.

  • File Sharing - External Drive - Unable to add user

    Hello,
I am trying to share a folder within an external firewire drive. However, when in the "File Sharing" section, I am unable to add users after adding the folder to the "Shared Folders:". The add user dialog appears, but when a user is selected and the "Select" button is clicked, the user does not appear in "Users:".
The external drive is formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with an Apple Partition Map.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

try adding this user from finder rather than fro system preferences. select this folder in finder and enter command+i. in the resulting popup go to the permissions section and add the user you want.

  • Time Machine on FireWire drive not recognized

Got an iMac with a FireWire drive set up as a TimeMachine volume.
In addition, I have a MBP, connected to the network via Wifi (Airport Extreme).
Under Snow Leopard, both Macs were able to do TimeMachine updates to the FireWire drive connected to the iMac.
Now, under Lion, the TimeMachine volume is still recognized and functional (i.e. successful backup) for the iMac, but not visible anymore for the MBP.
The MBP can't see the TimeMachine volume, let alone back up to it.
    What gives ?
Is this perhaps a network or access authorization issue ?
    Thanks.

Ok, so here some more information.
iMac (Lion) with connected FW HD, thus hosts the TimeMachine volumes, connected via Ethernet to AirportExtreme
MBP (Lion), connected via WLAN to AirportExtreme
    Connecting FROM iMac to MBP:
    Sidebar - Shared computers: OK
    Terminal SSH: OK
Finder - Go - Connect to Server: OK
    Connecting FROM MBP to iMac:
Sidebar - Shared computers: Error "Connection failed"
    Terminal SSH: OK
Finder - Go - Connect to Server: Error "There was a problem connecting to the server"
I'm really beginning to think my MBP Lion install is borked.

  • HELP! - Error 1309 - Can't copy file over 10gig to External firewire drive.

I know this is more of a hardware issue but I know that only other final cut users would be copying single files over 10gigs.
I have a G5 that I use for video production. Video Files can be large and to back them up I got an external hard drive ( Maxtor 1-touch 200gig) When I try to copy a file on to it that is 10gigs it give me a 1309 error. I have found that other people have had trouble copying files over 2gigs over to an external firewire drive. But I haven't found any answers. Can anyone offer any advice on how to solve this?
    Thanks

If you don't want to format it for the mac, you are limited to file sizes under 2gb.
Another alternative is to hook a firewire drive to your Mac and then share it with your windows machines (the program SHAREPOINTS is useful for this).
The drive can then be formatted Mac OS Extended and, once shared, the PCs can access all files without size limitations.
    good luck.

  • Sharing firewire and other volumes in Mac OS 10.4.6

I currently have an external firewire hard drive connected to my Mac mini, and I was wondering how I would share those volumes across the network when I am booted into Mac OS Tiger. I would like to be able to see my firewire drive and XP partition on my iBook also running Tiger, but when I go to authenticate into my Mac mini, I only have the option to mount my Macintosh HD and another volume that is my user name. When I boot into Windows XP and create the network share, I have no problem seeing any external drives, so why can't I do this in Mac OS X on my mini when I am connecting using another OS X machine, which would be my iBook? I would really like to be able to see my partitions besides the built in Macintosh HD volume so I can sit on my sofa and watch movies and videos that are on my mini. Currently I have Personal File Sharing, Windows Sharing, and Remote Login enabled on both machines, so I'm guessing I'm just missing something real simple here. Thank you.

With Windows file sharing enabled you have all the necessary software up and running. Windows file sharing is not part of the OS but provided by an application called "Samba", if you are fine with editing a config file then adding so called shares is simply a matter of adding a few lines.
The configuration is done in /etc/smb.conf, the first few lines of this file refer you to further documentation.
Read the documentation just to make sure that you don't share your files with everybody else on the network.

  • Disk utility Q: setting up RAID with 2 firewire drives

    Hi,
I tried setting up a redundant RAID with two LaCie 250gb firewire drives in Apple's Disk Utility. All was OK until I restarted. The RAID didn't show up, and both disks came up as unreadable. I was unable to reformat, erase, repair, or partition either of the LaCie drives. I tried new cables and both the front and rear Firewire ports. No matter what I did, I got an input/output error.
I was able to erase and reformat one of the drives on my powerbook running 4.6. The other drive appears to be DOA, as it clicks and blinks and does little else.
So what gives? I'm going to exchange the dead drive, but I don't want to have the same problem with setting up a RAID if the same nonsense is going to happen again. Any thoughts?

FW RAID on G5s is PITA and very poor performance. You would also need a PCI FW800 controller to get a boost or anything like normal. If you want any type of RAID, invest in Serial ATA drive/case/controller.
SeriTek if you want it to be bootable. SeriTek or Sonnet for direct connect. Sonnet if you think you might need more than 4 drives and use Port Multiplier.
There is only one FW channel that has to be shared if you don't invest in one or more FW800 controllers.
My bet is the drive could be fine but needs to be zeroed and could have damaged boot blocks at this point.
I am not a fan of mirrors. Backups, yes, lots. Stripped for scratch and even a dedicated boot OS/apps, yes. I've run with Disk Utility and SoftRAID (3.5) for 4 yrs now but mostly SCSI and one FW800 RAID which only gets about 75-80MB/sec. Even a single drive gets near 60MB/sec and a mirror would cut that in half.

  • Sharing external drives to tiger machine

i have a mac mini with 2 external firewire drives connected to it, running 10.5.2. i have selected "shared folder" from the get info window and have also setup the sharing preferences to share both drives. from my other machine running tiger, i can consistently see one of the drives, but the second one doesn't show up anymore. i used disk utility to erase and re-create the second drive and it seemed to work until i rebooted the machine and then it disappeared again. any thoughts?

This may be more an issue with the machine that can't see the drive than with Leopard; as long as your firewall is configured to allow the shares, there shouldn't be much of an issue.
When I ran tiger I had no end of difficulties with shared drives of any kind - windows, mac, linux, external, internal, whatever. They simply wouldn't show up in finder.
My solution was to simply use cmd-k in finder to connect to the share directly (ie. entering the server address of the share manually). But to do this, you have to know the exact address to input.
    So, here are some steps:
    1.) Open terminal
2.) type 'df' and hit enter
The output should be something like:
Filesystem 512-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s2 268435456 225710264 42213192 85% /
    devfs 218 218 0 100% /dev
    fdesc 2 2 0 100% /dev
    map -hosts 0 0 0 100% /net
    map auto_home 0 0 0 100% /home
    //GUEST:@foodar:139/store 2420087928 2389578912 30509016 99% /Volumes/store
The bit you're interested in is the last line: //user:@foodar:139/store
So now go to the computer that isn't detecting them, open finder, and hit cmd-k
in the address bar, input cifs://user:@foodar:139/store
(obviously replacing "user" with the username and "foodar" with the server's address.
And that should cover it for you...
