Sharing folder icon in system prefs changed to light switch????

I just noticed that the sharing icon in my system prefs is an icon of a light switch and part of the surrounding graphics are cut off - what's happened? Thanks in advance. FE

Hi,
That's usually caused by a bad System Preferences cache file. Have a look under:
Hard drive > Users > YourUsername > Library > Caches
and delete anything referring to System Preferences. (Sorry, not on a Mac at the moment and can't recall the specific name(s).)

  • Software Update icon in System Preferences changed

Never seen this before. This morning I noticed that Software Update icon in System Preferences changed from the regular one to a BIG switch. Noticed this only in MBP.

I got it back. I moved Software Update preference pane from /System/Library/PreferencePanes to Desktop and moved it back. The original icon is back ! Ofcourse I ran Disk Permissions after checking.

    Hi, James.
To solve the corrupted preference pane icon problem:1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open your Home > Library > Caches folder, then trash the following two files therein:
    • com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    • com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
    3. Empty Trash.
    4. Launch System Preferences and see if the problem is resolved.Good luck!

The "Energy" icon has somehow changed. How do I can back the original icon?
    Please help.

    Spy,
Quit System Preferences if it's running and trash the following file:
    Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
Then launch System Preferences and hopefully the Energy Icon will return to normal appearance.

In the system prefs pane, the speech icon is being dispayed as a box with a light switch and the text cut off. Any ideas on how to get this back to the original microphone. Thanks.

    chris,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    According to MarkDouma®:
Quit System Preferences if it's running and trash the following file:
    /Users/~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
Then launch System Preferences and hopefully the icons should appear properly.

  • Missing Icon in System Pref.

Hi. I open system preferences and the "Print & Fax" icon is missing. In its place is a light switch, what seems to be in the "off" position. Also I could see the top half of the "Print & Fax" line. What can I do to get it back?

Quit System Preferences if it is open, and choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter ~/Library/Caches/ as the folder's location, throw away the item named com.apple.preferencepanes.cache inside, and then restart System Preferences.

  • Corrupt "Startup Disk" icon in System Prefs

Wish I could post a pic, but I can't. The icon for the Startup Disk in my System Preferences is all messed up. It's way too wide, looks like a light switch with a circle or something down in the corner, and the title isn't even there.
    Old skool: rebuild the desktop.
    New millennium:...?
Thanks for any suggestions! (All software updates installed.)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
    It could be that your System Preferences are corrupted. It happens... Try this. Locate this file;
com.apple.systempreferences.plist It's here: /Home/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file, drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Go to your System Preferences/Startup Disk pane and see if the icon is behaving.
Also, if you haven't already done so, create a new user: System Preferences/Accounts and see if the System Preferences/Startup Disk icon looks like it should in that account. The reason for doing this is to see if the problem is system wide or just your Home Folder.
Also, can't hurt to run Disk Utility. It's in your Applications/Utility folder. Repair Disk Permissions and see if that makes a difference.
    Hope something helps!

  • TS3048 No BlueTooth icon in System Prefs 10.10

I have no BlueTooth icon in system preferences, so I cannot connect any wireless devices. It's a new Mac Mini (late 2014) running OS X 10.10.

    Greetings,
I managed to fix the problem. I copied the SharingPref.prefPane from another OS X machine and now it works fine.

  • Missing "Sharing" Icon in System Prefs

I'm trying to setup screen sharing but when I go to System Preferences, there's not a "Sharing" icon like I'm used to. I'm on OSX Lion (10.7.1).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Haven't installed 10.7.1 yet, still on 10.7.0 but it's there for me in the Internet & Wireless section:

  • Why do some System Prefs change themselves?

My prefs for Desktop Picture, Dock, and International Input Menu have changed since the last time the computer was turned on - why? (No-one else has accessed the computer.) How do I stop this from recurring - it's not the first time.
    Cheers

Hey JoeMB, first of all why would you even want the sounds for different functions to happen? I have all my Windows sounds turned off, if you make a mistake you'll know it by what you?see on your screen, why have the annoying sounds, other than maybe to wake you up!!!!! All the system sounds are mono sounds so coming through your center and rear speakers is the way your sound card interprets the .wav.
If I could make a suggestion, having the sound maxed in the 550 system is creating what is called a power hiss. You will want to mute all the items you're not using such as "Line In", "Midi Out" and any other that are not being used, by doing this you will keep the Signal to Noise ratio closer to spec. I have both the GigaWorks 550 and the GigaWorks S750 sound systems and use the X-Fi Elite Pro sound card. When I bought the GigaWorks 550 speaker system it was the best Creative had to offer, I no sooner got it than the next month they came out with the GigaWorks S750, 7.1 system, go figure! Joe feel free to email me at [email protected] and in the Subject line put "Creative speaker sys help" because you know about opening email from unknowns, if I can be of more help.

  • Error entering administrator name & password to make System Prefs changes

I have been running Leopard with just fine but encountered this new problem today. I wanted to create a "Guest" account, but when I clicked on the lock in the System Preferences: Users screen to add that option, I typde in my administrator name & password and got this error:
"Sorry, you entered an invalid username or password. Please try again."
It accepts my password when logging in, for keychain access, etc... But I'm not able to unlock & make changes with the same username & password. I tried logging in to make the changes in System Preferences under another user who is also an admin, but I got the same error message using that user's name & password.
This is a new problem for me. I unlocked & added a user account for my kids with no problems just last week and haven't made any changes to my password or account name since then.
Any thoughts on how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance!

I'm having a similar problem, since the 10.5.1 upgrade (I downloaded the 110MB version, as Apple readily admits that there are problems when using Software Update for upgrades).
I ran Disk Utility to repair permissions on my boot drive, and it prompted me for my administrator password (something that I've only had to do since the upgrade to 10.5). This time, the user name was blank (usually it fills in the user name with the account name I'm logged in under). I entered the information, and got the error. Double checked everything, and still no luck. After a third attempt, I was told I had to wait a while before trying again.
I'm hoping there's some simple fix or something I can easily to type in. I don't want to wait a few more weeks for Apple to release another patch, and I don't want to have to step back to an even more unstable version so I can use Disk Utility.

  • Removing Icons from System Prefs

How can I remove from the System Preferences panel an icon of a function that I have removed from the hard drive?
I threw out Time Machine, but the icon is still there and I even get the dialog when I click on it. But I want it out.

    /System/Library/PreferencePanes/TimeMachine.prefPane
You do realize that TimeMachine.app is only 410k?

    Help

10.7.2 is not an update, it is an upgrade, but (if your Mac is new enough) should upgrade to the latest version of OSX, Mountain Lion. It's $20 and you can buy it in the App Store (Apple Menu)
