Sharing folders across several computers without restriction?

I thought I followed all of the directions I could find on apple.com so I am asking the community for help.
Here is what we want to do:
I want to be able to access the same things on my laptop as I can on my desktop. I setup shared folders, but they only work when my laptop is on. I don't want to use the laptop all of the time, but sometimes I need to as I have to take it with me to work on a project. I'd like to be able to come home after using my laptop all day and log on to my iMac and then continue my work. Is this possible?
Also my husband would like to do the same from his laptop. He would like that if we are on our laptops that we could share a file, both having read and write access to it. I have tried to mess with permissions from both our computers to give us both unlimited access to all three computers, but it isn't working and when he looks some of my folders are restricted and the same with his.
We need some serious help here and need step-by step instructions because we obviously keep messing something up.
We have Time Capsule, Time Machine and AirPort wireless network. Let me know if you need any other info to help us out and i will get it for you.
Thanks!

My understanding is holding down the option key while dragging a file from one computer to another fixes permissions. But I've had mixed results. You might look into DropBox or ExecSync. My partner and I travel a lot and have the same situation when we come home. Too bad we can't specify a folder, where we could put current projects, that we could designate MobileMeSync to include in it's sync.

  • Syncing ical across multiple computers without .mac

    Hi,
Is it possible to sync ical calendars across multiple computers in the same network or over the internet without .Mac? If I have a website or ftp server, can I use that instead to synce over the internet or is there an easier way? Thanks.

    This is another related question.
Having at last extracted a decade of diaries from Palm Desktop as vCal (since you ask I had to go back to Classic as the app quit without writing the export file in Tiger and Leopard, even tho it is otherwise OK) I now have something I can import rather messily into iCal.
However as I have really bad internet access in the Boondocks where I live I don't want to use .Mac to sync between my iMac and iBook. Palm ran very happily from a thumb drive, but I don't see how I can do it as the powers that be seem to have made the data file invisible.
I'd like to move it to the thumb drive and have an alias on each Mac where the data should be - as I do with Palm.
Does anyone know the path, and if there is a problem doing it between Tiger and Leopard?
    Cheers, Colin

  • I have 2 Macs, connected to the same Wifi network. But sometimes, the shared computers does not appear on the left hand menu of the toolbar for me to access shared folders between the computers. Am I doing something wrong?

I recently bought a MacBook Air for work. Whilst at home, both my Macbooks are connected to the same Wifi network. Sometimes, the 2 Macbooks are connected and I can access the shared folders, which is great. However, every now and again, the connection seems to be lost. Is there something I need to set up so that every time both Macbooks are switched on and connected to my Wifi, it will automatically be linked?
    Any help is much appreciated!

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem.  The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6.  (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

  • Is there a way to have all/ the important files shared on two mac computers without a service like dropbox?

I was looking to get a Mac Mini to use with my Cinema Display so I had something of a desktop computing station.  I am concerned though of the ability to have all or at least my word documents, power points, etc., graphic projects, my pdfs, and my non iphoto images transfering between computers.  I currently have a macbook air running 10.8.4 and plan to upgrade to Maverics when it comes out.  I DO NOT want to use a service like Dropbox.  I would much rather prefer a smooth and automatic transfer of the files without any steps to transfer.  Please let me know if AND HOW this is possible.

Simple file sharing SHOULD do this on the local network as BDAqua points out. If you want to physcially move files without having to go through uploading and downloading via Dropbox, use FileDrop. It's free and files go directly to the receiving computer through your LAN - in ONE step.

  • How to sync tags across several computers using DropBox

I use DropBox on several Macs - Mini, MacBook etc - and have set up tags within the DropBox on one.  How do I get the tags to synchronise across each of the Macs without having to rewrite them in each time?

    Hi,
I don't think this is possible, at least with any Outlook built-in features, as each Outlook client has it's own data file (.pst file) which need to be synced with the server.
If the major problem is the bandwidth, maybe you can prevent Microsoft Outlook from automatically downloading email messages by unticking the option of "Schedule an automatic send/receive every _ minutes." in
    Tools>Options...>Mail Setup
    tab>Send/Receive... button.
Then you can download emails in Outlook when the bandwidth allows, by manually clicking Send/Receive button.

  • Trouble sharing files across networked computers

I frequently have this problem when trying to copy files from my MBP at home to my PowerMac at work and vice versa. Regardless of how the connection between the two machines is made (smb, MobileMe), when I try to copy a file or folder, I get a message saying 'You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named "filename.xxx".'
I am the administrator for both machines, and I am logged in to both as the administrator when this message occurs.
At this point, I have buttons giving me the option to Stop or Continue. Clicking Continue brings up a message saying 'The item "filename.xxx" contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?'
Again I have the option to Stop or Continue. Clicking Continue gives me the message 'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.' This message comes up even though I am logged in as the administrator on both machines and I have made sure that I've got read & write privileges for that file.
At this point, I'm stymied. This occurs whether I'm attempting to transfer a single file, a folder, or an archive. I've adjusted sharing preferences on both machines so that I specifically have full privileges for both the source and target folders as well as the file(s) being moved. Both machines are running OSX 10.5.8.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance -

Hi Keven - just wanted to chime in that I can replicate this error on a nearly identically configured setup as yours, but like you, have no substantive response (yet) from Apple. In fact, my post disappeared. The only thing I see, perusing the forums, is that people are recommending Snow Leopard upgrade to solve numerous networking issues. I realize this is not a satisfactory answer. I will stay subscribed to your post and will let you know if Apple comes back to me with a good response as well.

  • Sharing folders across multiple Macs

Other than an old post about now-defunct iDisk, I don't seem to easily find an answer to this on the boards so am posting my own question.
I have two Macs – an old MBPro and a newer iMac. The laptop cannot run Mountain Lion as it's too old; both devices now run Lion. Now I want to solve document sharing issues so I don't have to manually manage synchonization.
I want the content of certain folders on my iMac to be available to both devices (and preferable my iPad/iPhone as well) anywhere I go and have Internet access. Lacking Internet access, I want the last synced version available, and when I'm online again, any changes will be synced back to the cloud.
I have iCloud service (25GB for $40/year) as well as 100GB Dropbox subscription that costs me $120/year.  I don't think I need both(?)  Using more iCloud storage means that I'd pay $100/year for just 50GB.  So it seems Dropbox is the better deal at least space-for-money-wise.  The initial folder I want to share is about 7GB but I can see this growing as I sync more things.
I cannot see using simple file sharing from the iMac as it isn't always running; that is, it might be asleep or even powered off.
Anyone willing to share the "best practice" approach to getting this done in a secure way that doesn't have me worrying about some third-party accessing all the documents?
    Thank you in advance.

You can use Sugarsync for this, it is free (up to 5GB) and inexpensive if 5G is insufficient.
Once installed you can choose any combination of folders from one machine for replication on another. Changes made on either machine are reflected on the other. It will work on Macs, PC's IOS and Android devices.

  • Simple ways of sharing folders across users?

    Hi
I realise this has been done to death, but after many attempts I am wondering if I am missing something. I am using the top level public folder and system preferences route to drop in a folder that contains several sub folders and then multiple documents in each folder. So far it looks like I need to set access rights for each user at a main folder and sub folder (which is painful, but OK), but then also for every document which is contained in them.
Am I missing something - I am trying to quickly allow access to an existing file structure so we can both work on it retaining only one copy, and I don't want to start from fresh, or have duplicates.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi MartinR
Yep tried this one and even sorting our the file preferences at an individual file level to ensure they were read & write by user does not seem to work. You can open the file, but you can't alter it unless, of course, you originated it - not unless I am missing something again.

  • Difficulty sharing folders across home wireless network

Can anyone tell me how to set sharing permissions so that when I share a folder on my home network, all the sub-folders and files are also made accessible? As it stands, sharing a folder does not change the sharing permissions of the sub-folders and files contained within it. If I have to manually set the sharing permission of every single document I want to share, it's going to mean a ton of work!

  • Sharing folders across Xserve

I hope I can make sense of this. I am somewhat of a rookie with Workgroup Manager and Xserve. I have 30 computers (Imacs) using a Xserve 10.4.11 version. The students have their own accounts. I am trying to have one student, let's say sitting on computer one who wants to share a document with a student on computer 30. I heard that you could share files using the student's "public folder>drop Box" on their computer. I have yet to figure out how to do that.
    Any help?

    Hi
To be honest enabling Peer to Peer Sharing has nothing to do with XServe or OSX Server. If that's what you're really asking?
To share a Drop Folder from a client machine so as others can access the data launch System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing. That's it.
However I have to ask why? If you have a server why don't you simply create and share a share point instead? Place your data there and then assign read/write access for all your clients. Shared data can be accessed that way instead as everyone gets to 'see' it.

  • Is there a way to sync mail across multiple computers without using .mac?

I'd like to be able to use either of my machines to check/respond to email, and have both of them be updated with both incoming messages and my replies. Is this possible outside of using a .mac account?
I'm using 10.4.6 and also the latest version of Mail.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Yes, there are several people that have published the steps to set up your own .Mac service by reverse engineering the protocol and rolling their own server to provide web services to emulate .Mac.
If you are looking for a hobby, I would encourage you to try it. Assuming you are sophisticated enough to google it and find some steps you can use, it should not be that hard to set up.
Please note - I haven't looked over the licenses for all of the software involved (Mac OS and .Mac) - you might be in violation of your license term by reverse engineering parts of the system or violating copyright/patents. As long as you don't go into business or diverting income from Apple - you may well be fine by learning how they did things.
P.S. I assume you mean syncing the mail settings, not the actual contents of the mail box.

  • Sharing scripts across multiple computers

    Hi,
I'm currently working on customizing Bridge (ie. custom file info panel, start-up scripts), but I would like to share the changes I make with a group of users.
So far, what I've been doing is modifying a start-up script or custom panel, and then sending it to each person, and telling them where on their system to put the file. It would be much easier to have a shared instance of the file, so I could just modify that file directly. Is this possible? (We all have access to a shared drive, but I can't figure out how to get something on that drive to be detected by Bridge)

    Wayne,
I'm pretty sure there is no way to redirect Bridge and File Info to look elsewhere for custom panels.
One thing you might consider doing is publishing the shared panels on a web or FTP server on your intranet or on the internet. You could then use the JavaScript web and ftp access tools to write a script that would synchronize the panels in the local folder with panels on the server.

  • Sharing Apps across 2 computers.

My wife and I recently got married. While we were single, we each purchased a fair amount of iPhone apps individually. We each have our own laptops with our own iTunes account.
I can authorize her iTunes account on my laptop and mine on hers.
Obviously I dont want to buy an app that she as already purchased and visa-vera.
We have each other's iTunes account authorized on our laptops, but we only sync to our own laptop. How can we get access to each other's iPhone apps?

To put the files on an iPod, you need a copy of the file in your iTunes library. Regular iTunes sharing allows listening but not copying. To get a copy, you can use iTunes Home Sharing, or you can copy the files with a medium such as a USB flash drive.
Copy them to your computer, add to your iTunes library, and then you will be ready to sync your iPod.

  • File sharing across multiple computers - is there an easier way?

Have a small office that is getting bigger, so we purchased a new 20" iMac. Previously, we had an old iMac G4 and iBook G4. All three computers are part of the same LAN.
In the past, we have shared files across the computers by first mounting a shared computer, then creating an alias to that share and copying the alias to the dock. This allowed us to just click an icon to have access to files on the other computer.
As the office has gotten bigger and we have added a new computer, we need a more reliable solution. We need to be able to access common files (such as word documents and Excel spreadsheets) in a single location. For example, the iMac G4 has document templates that we are constantly changing, but we want to make changes only to a common copy.
    Can anyone make some suggestions?

I know you can do this by exporting the common shared directory as an NFS share, and then configuring each client to transparently mount that share at a common point in the filesystem. For example, if you wanted to have a common set of fonts accessible to every client on your network, you could export /Library/Fonts on the server, and have every client mount it at ~/Library/Fonts. Applications running on the client access the fonts on the server, and don't know any differently.
Unfortunately, its not a trivial thing to set up on either the server or the client. I could try to come up with a tutorial, but I haven't had time to get into it myself to really comprehend all of the possibilities with using NFS like that.

  • My Macbook Air does not show up on my network to any of my other computers, Other computers on my network appear and disappear, some shared folders are not accessible

My Macbook Air with Lion does not show up on my network to any of my other computers (PC's) , even though it is connected to my wifi and does access the Internet. In addition, my other computers sometimes show up in Finder and sometimes they're not there. Sometimes they do show in Finder and when I click on them, I get "Connection Failed", other times, they connect. Also some shared folders on those other computers, which are PC's are not accessible, even though fully shared. My network is Apple Airport Extreme and works perfectly otherwise, including all PC's being able to see each other. Help would be much appreciated

I got the same problem. I want to access my shared folder on my home windows7 from my MBA. Tried many suggestions on the web but all to no avail. I thought that should be very trivial. Maybe a Lion bug?
