Sharing folders and settings between users

Greetings,
I've decided to set up a new user account on my macbook pro running Leopard and I want to know if and how I can have the same settings i.e dock items and other preferences etc for both user names. I also want to access nearly all of the folders between both. The only difference between the two is one will have admin access and one won't. I would like to be able to access uni work folders etc on both.
I've tried setting the folders to read and write for both users but I can't seem to find them when I log into the new account.
Any ideas folks?
Cheers

If you are planning on setting up several accounts to be the same, you can use the *Workgroup Manager* of the *Server Admin Tools* to set up the account details (you don't need to be running OS X Server to use some of the tools).
Users normally do not have access to other user's accounts (admin users don't either). Your best bet is to set up the shared folder(s) in the /Users/Shared folder, since that is what it is for. ACL entries can also be added to the shared folder(s) to provide additional access so files that are owned by others can be changed, etc.

  • Sharing files and library between user accounts

I know this question was asked many times before, but I never read a clear answer. Is it possible to share the library (and files) from one user account to another user account on same computer (same apple ID in iTunes) so that when user 1 downloads music, user 2 will see the music (without any additional steps) when they log into iTunes.
The problem I ran into was user 2 had to manually add the new purchased music to their library in order to see the music. If user 2 was unaware of any purchases, user 2 unaware could potentially repurchase the same music.
My issue is my other users (family members) are not diligent when it comes to checking.
Is there an easy way to sync the two music libraries (or 1 real library) across multiple user accounts on the same PC.

Move the library to the /Users/Shared/ folder, go into each user account, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and choose that library.

  • Urgent-Renamed Folder in Shared Folders and now Error for all Users?

    Hello,
Well I was asked to shorten a name in Shared Folders and so I changed it. Now I get an error if I click on Dashboards or Shared Folders (which is empty now btw ???) or Manage Catalog, its displaying:
Target Path Not Found (/Shared/Customer Operations) Error Code: GZ8VXQ96.
Are we not supposed to create a folder in Shared Folders and then Change the Name?
Please Help. The BI Server Administrator is telling me that everyone else's reports are not available now.
    Neally

Kishore, Thank you for your response! I have forwarded it off.
Thing is, there was nothing inside the folder yet...I hadn't moved any reports over so there was nothing referencing it yet.
How can a name of a folder that is for our dept. affect HR, Finance..when they login? Their dashboard preferences were not set to mine. Confused. And to add to this, when I click on Manage Catalog is when I receive the error. So I imagine this is something admin will have to do in Oracle on bi server?

  • So slow listing network shared folders and drives.

    Hi!!
I'm reporting a very slow connection between my MacBook Pro 13" (snow leopard) and my MacPro 8 core (leopard). When I try to reach the macpro in finder (shared) passed 1 or 2 minutes until the system ask me user/pass, then show me the list of my shared folders and drives. Navigating through them is ok, ut when I return to the main list, SnowLeopard again waits 1 minutes or 2 to show. Before, the main list always remain there.
    Any help??

Same sort of problem here. Screen Sharing also doesn't work.
Pretty sure it's DNS, as if I temporarily remove my router from the equation (by, say, using a manual IP address instead of DHCP on the machines and leaving DNS blank) everything works and is instant - except of course for the internet. Put it back to DHCP (which uses the router for DNS) and it's slow again (and screen sharing doesn't work at all).
However, OpenDNS hasn't helped (probably because it's a private address range?)
The network is 192.168.0.0/24 with gateway and DNS server 192.168.0.1, which is a Draytek Vigor 2600G ADSL router.
This has only happened recently, I guess Snow Leopard or one of its updates has forced reverse DNS lookups for everything.
As I understand it, AFP is supposed to use Bonjour for hostnames ending in .local and bypass DNS altogether, but despite checking that they end in .local (an automatic thing) in System Preferences it doesn't seem to do this any more.
Any way to turn off these reverse DNS lookups?

  • I need to disable profiles being created in C:/Documents and Settings/[Current User], or I need to move where these are created, move them to somewhere else on the C:/ not under a person's profile. Is this possible?

I'm trying to package Firefox 5.0.1 for people who have limited space on their profiles. When Firefox is installed and opened, it creates files in C:\Documents and Settings\[CURRENT USER]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles and apparently this data (even though it's only 10MB) is too much for some people's profiles.
Is there a way to move where this is created? They don't mind if none of the information such as bookmarks follows them. I need to know if it's possible to move the files elsewhere on the C:\ so that it's not stored inside a users profile folder.

Open your profile folder Help menu (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting information and click the show folder button.
    Close Thunderbird
Delete the file foldertree.json and restart Thunderbird.

  • Sharing photos (in Iphoto) between user accounts

Hi, I am a new Mac user, so nothing is obvious to me at the moment and I therefore apologise for the simplicity of this question.
I have a new black MacBook OS X I have set up two accounts on it, one for myself and one for my wife. However there are some applications which we would like to share (IPhoto and ITunes). I can see that there is a shared drive and I have tried to move these applications into there, however my wife's account still can't get access to these files/applications.
I KNOW there is an obvious solution to this, but can't find it!
    What am I doing wrong??
    Thanks for any help

    LoIM
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want your wife to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open her account. In her account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in her source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
This will work with iTunes too.
If you want your nearest and dearest to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the Users/Shared (or an external HD)
Make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How to turn off sharing of network settings between Mac and iPhone?

There are a number of wireless networks available around where I work. Whenever my Mac connects to one, so does my iPhone. When I tell my iPhone to forget the network, my Mac does as well. How can I turn off this behavior?

It's probably being caused by using iCloud keychain, which syncs passwords for wifi networks between your devices/Macs.  You would have to stop using this feature to prevent stored and removed wifi network passwords from syncing between them.

  • Share all folders and files between two OSX partitions

So I have two partitions on my drive, one running 10.9, the other running 10.10 beta. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make all folders read/write accessible from the other partition. I'd like to be able to access them easily, so that I don't have to change back over to 10.9 every time I want to watch a movie or access one of my files in one of my folders.
All of the info I can find online is totally focused on how to share files between, say, a windows partition and osx partition for example, all the drivers needed etc... and I'm having a hard time just figuring out how to set permissions or whatever is needed to just get those pesky red dots off my folder icons and have them open and available form either partition.
    Thanks for any help.
For what it's worth, I've tried hitting "get info" on one of the folders I know I can't get to from the other side (basically, all the main folders in my user except Public), and Everyone has Read Access (I can't even get in for Read at this point from other partition so I'm guessing that's not the right place). My user on the other partition is same username.
Possibly a beta issue with Yosemite, or is there something I'm missing?

This is a screen shot of the shared folder between my 2 partitions (10.6 and 10.9).

  • Sharing typedefs and VIs between different targets in the same project

    Hi,
I'm writing a distributed application that runs on a PC and a CompactRIO. There are some data structures and convenience functions (typedefs and VIs) that I'd like to share between them. What's the recommended way of doing so? Is an LVLIB suitable for this purpose?
I currently just host the shared items on the "My Computer" target. However, when I'm editing my code, I sometimes have to click "synchronize with other application instances". Also, the shared items show up on the dependencies list of my cRIO target. I'd rather not have these happen; is it possible to avoid these?
    Thanks!
    Solved!

Why do you want this not to happen? When you assign a VI to one target, but still use that VI on the other target, LabVIEW has to recompile for that other target (read: No, you can't avoid that!).
I do the same for many VIs (a lot of them in my user.lib) but still have no problems with it. And using the same typedef for all targets in a project really helps minimizing errors!

  • Trasnferring MAIL settings between User accounts

I have 2 user accounts on my Powerbook, PERSONAL and WORK.
I use Mail in my personal account, but would like to transfer the settings and the messages into the work account to avoid switching the accounts just to check the delivery of mail.
How can I transfer the account settings and the messages?
    Patrick

    Patrick,
As you have framed the question, I don't think this can be done. While you can always "clone" an entire Mail setup, you can add a setup to one existing quite so easily.
I think you will need to set the personal account up, and then Import your account folder mailboxes in the Work User account. The import can run into permission problems, unless you copy first to an external drive, the Shared folder or a CD or DVD. Once you import the personal account Inbox and Sent, let's say, then you can transfer their message content into those mailboxes that resulted when you set up the account in the Work User account.
In any User folder the Mail folder is located at ~/Library, and in this Mail folder you will find one account folder for each account you have.
    Ask any questions, as needed.

  • Is there a way to share my Mail account and settings between two partitions, running Snow Leopard and Lion?

I have two partitions on my internal hard drive - one is running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the other is running Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. Mail (5.0) is set up and runs perfectly on the Lion partition and I have not used Mail (4.5) yet on my Snow Leopard partition. I want to know if I can read, download, and save mail into the same user Library folder (probably the Lion user library) from both partitions...

You usually set up your mail accounts on a specific e-mail client programs such as Mail in OS X and Mail on an iPad, which will access the same remote mail server to have your messages show up on each device. Mailboxes can be synced in this way between two devices.
An alternative is to use the same remote application such as Gmail to access that service from multiple devices, so a dedicated e-mail client like Mail is not needed, but the availability of these depends on the e-mail service being used.

  • Shared Services and cannot open User Directories Tree

    Hello,
I have an issue with Shared Services 931. My OpenLDAP and Shared Services will start fine. I am using TomCat as deployment of the service.
When i login as admin, i goto the User Directories and try to expand (click on the + sign) and it says loading. Then i checked the logs and i see this in there.
"Unable to get css.xml file or file maybe read only". I check the file css.xml and it is not read only. I have even configured using another Oracle Schema, but still no luck.
Has anyone seen this before ?
    Thanks,
    Azmat Bhatti

    Hi,
Have you tried rebooting you shared services server to see if it removes the lock?
What happens if you start shared services as a foreground app instead of starting it as a Windows service? Do you get further info in terms of errors?

  • Importing folders and settings to iPhoto 9

Hi, folks, I hope you can help me: I just upgraded to Snow leopard, by doing a clean install, and I'm not sure it has been worth the trouble - I also upgraded to iLife 9 from 6. One problem that I've had is how to duplicate all the folders that i had set up in iPhoto 6. I've already been doing a little work in iPhoto 9, loves the face recognition feature!, but I'd love to integrate all my old folders. I have all my old settings saved, i believe on an external hard drive. Should I just copy the iPhoto 6 .plist file? Would that overwrite the newer one with all the faces that I've set up?
    Does this make sense?
    Thanks in advance!!

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
That's how you get all the old organisation that you had.
    Regards
