Sharing footage (NAS)

We are finally coming to the point where we really need to install some network storage so that we can share projects efficiently between at least 2 FCP workstations simultaneously for faster editing turnaround.
We often have 4 HD streams in a multicam (or at least manual mulitcam) situation and having one machine serving the other (over gigabit network) while trying to do it's own editing is just not working.
I'm assuming that we need some sort of NAS (with RAID) for this, but TBH the budget is not going to be very high (though no actual budget set). I do have an old G5 Mac Pro hanging around but since that can only take two drives internally I'm not optimistic it can do what I need - but it's at least a possibility.
I know that gigabit networking is already going to be pushing it, but what exactly am I going to need to make all this work?
Assume only 2 workstations at this point, and assume that the footage will be 720p rather than 1080p (though 1080p may be a requirement later).
Suggestions on how best to achieve this on as little budget as possible?

  • My folders are locked on a shared Buffalo NAS Drive. How do I unlock them?

I have an Imac 27" running snow leopard and Im connected to a shared Buffalo NAS drive. Some of the folders are locked. I ran a test on an empty folder and selected get info, and changed the priviledge to "Read & Write" from "Read Only" and the folder locked. how do I get the folder to unlock? The other computers are showing the folder locked as well.

We were able to unlock the folder from an old mac running OS 9 and change the permissions.

  • File Copied to Maxtor Shared Storage NAS Drive Disappearing?

I attached a new Maxtor Shared Storage II (500 Gb) drive to our wireless router, and have discovered problem with disappearing files when trying to copy a local file to a folder in the NAS drive.
Open a window to an empty folder on the NAS drive. Drag a file on the desktop of the local machine to the folder. File appears to be successfully copied.
However, looking at the info bar of the target window immediately after the copying operation shows that the folder contains TWO files (even though only one is shown in the window). After a few seconds, the file disappears and the window shows 0 files. There is no error message.
The desktop file I'm trying to copy has an image icon (as with many files in Leopard). However, the file in the NAS folder window always shows a generic Preview icon during its brief existence.
This happens about 75% of the time.
Occasionally, the window does show two files after copying, and both files will disappear. When this happens, one of the files has a generic Preview icon, and the other has an Acrobat icon.
Other times, the drag and drop produces no files on the target window and no error message.
The file that shows the problems is this file: http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/Promotionsfiles/businesslinkgovukrun.pdf
I'm running Leopard 10.5.1, everything up to date. Can anyone shed light on this problem?
What seems to me to be happening is that when Leopard copies a file with an image icon, it copies the icon separately from the file. After the copy, it ties them up together. If something is not quite right, it can't "bundle" the icon with the file, and the copy operation falls down.

This seems to me related to this problem

  • Home sharing with nas itunes atv

    Hi
I have a nas that has all my movies tv shows on and an imac running itunes with the nas content in my library but the files staying on the nas.
Now I had problems at times with "error loading content try later" message, I assumed that this was due to using wifi and so have just run cat 5 to an extreme next to my atv pluged into same and the other end to my router and the imac and nas plugged into router as well, rebouted atv with new network settings and all good, next day error message again!!, now I know even the wifi is good enough as the nas is a Lacie and my ipad can link to the nas and beam to my atv, so with the cat 5 I should have no problems.
Help please I have no idea why this is happening

I've been trying to thing what might be different about my set up versus yours in case (which may be likely) you are correct and your wife's library is authorised and plays your content in her iTunes application.
I deliberately chose my wife's music to check my set up because she pays for her own iTunes account, whereas my children have their own accounts but I give them an allowance and send them gift vouchers from my account (which I thought might just be relevant). I later realised that my wife's library is also on our homesharing ID (which again might have been relevant), so I've now tried it with my youngests purchased and protected content because his library is using our homesharing ID.
    I'll keep thinking.

  • Sharing a NAS drive between 2 PCs running itunes with different accounts....

I have 2 Windows 7 PC's with different iTunes accounts, both accessing the same NAS drive for their save location.
    2 Questions:
    - 1 - How do I stop them from reverting back their default save loaction ( from "z:/itunes/itunesmedia" to "c:/user/music/itunes/itunesmedia" ) ??
    - 2 - when one account buys music and save it to the NAS location, will the other itunes account be able to see it straight away, and if not, how do i make it so it does??
    Any help is good help
    Thanks
    Jack
    All itunes is running 10.something....
All Pc's autherised to play the other accounts music etc......

You can manually add the music files on the external drive to your powerbook's itunes by using File->Add to library but that won't bring over playlists, ratings or playcounts.
This "metadata" is in a file called "iTunes Library" on your desktop in Music/iTunes. To bring over that "metadata" you can try this:
    1) Close iTunes on both machines.
    2) Copy the "iTunes Library" from the desktop and put in in the same place on the powerbook.
    3) Now open iTunes on the powerbook.
This will definitely work if the external drive is attached directly to the powerbook. I haven't tried your type of scenario, where you will access the external drive through the network to get to the desktop and then the external drive. But I think I've seen other here say this works.
If it doesn't work, ie it put exclamation marks next to tracks to indicate it can't find htem, then go into the preferences (Advanced, general) and set the music folder location to the external drive (through the network, through the desktop). This should make it find the music.
You'll also want to make sure "Copy files to the music folder" is ON so that any music you add through the powerbook is copied to the external drive. (If that's what you want. You may chose not to do this, to have some music stay on the local harddrive so you have acess to it when you're not at home).

  • Maxtor Shared Storage (NAS) + Airport Express problems

Dear forum readers and network pundits,
I have just recently bought a 500Gb Maxtor Shared Storage (MSS) ethernet drive, to which I'm planning to make regular backup of files from my wirelessly connected MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. Both computers are connected to the Internet via Airport Express, which, in turn, is connected to a router/modem. The MSS is attached to an RJ45 socket on the modem, next to the Airport Express RJ45 cable.
The problem is that I cannot seem to make a proper connection to the MSS. I can access the drive's web interface through Safari, but I cannot mount it as a network drive in the Finder. When hooking up my MacBook Pro to the router/modem directly using a RJ45 cable everything works like a charm, so I know the drive works fine. The problem seems to be the transition from the wired router to Airport Express.
I'm no network wizard in any way. When things don't work from the start I'm left scratching my beard, which is why I turn to the vast bank of knowledge contained here. Please help me. Is there a button in the Airport Express settings I can push to make it work, or do I need to by more hardware?
    Looking forward to your help.
    Cheers,
    Andreas
P.S. I'll churn out brownie points by the bucketload for any helpful answers

  • Problem Sharing Footage

    HELP
I have two and one half hours of video footage. I want to share it to media browser to do post editing themes in iDVD. However, I get error messages either stating that the file is too long or no more space on my hard drive. I was able to resolve the space issue by deleting some old footage.
Is there a way that I can move the footage to an external drive? I also have a macbook (NOT Pro)...could I possibly access it from the macbook? I can't even post the footage to mobileme.
I've got Snow Leopard 10.6.7 with iLife '09.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE

Is there a way that I can move the footage to an external drive?
The following is a copy of the procedure described in iMovie '11 Help (also applies to iMovie '09):
*Copy or move video from your Event Library to an external hard disk*
To save space on your computer’s hard disk, you can move video in your Event Library to an external hard disk connected to your computer. You can also copy Events to an external hard disk. You might do this, for example, to create a duplicate copy of your entire video library or to copy an Event to a friend’s hard disk.
Note: To use an external hard disk with iMovie, it must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). iMovie doesn’t support network-attached storage or external flash memory drives.
+To copy or move Events to another hard disk:+
Connect a compatible external hard disk drive to your computer. In iMovie, click the Hard Disk button to see all available hard disks, which are listed in your Event Library. The button is located in the upper-right corner of the Event Library.
Select the Events you want to move or copy. To select more than one Event at a time, press Command as you click Event names.
    +Do one of the following:+
To copy the Events, drag them to the icon of the hard disk, in the Event Library, you want to copy them to.
To move the Events, hold down the Command key as you drag the Events to the icon of the hard disk you want to move them to.
The Events are moved, and they’re deleted from the original location. Any projects using clips from the moved Events refer to the clips at their new location. This means that the hard disk to which you have moved the Events must be connected to the computer where the projects are in order for you to play or further edit the projects in iMovie.
If you’re moving a large amount of video at once, this process may take several minutes.
I have two and one half hours of video footage. I want to share it to media browser to do post editing themes in iDVD.
The limit for iDVD is 2 hours, including themes and menus (unless you are using dual layer DVDs). So it is highly unlikely that iDVD will be able to process 2 and a half hours on a standard DVD. I appreciate that you have stated in your second post that the Share to iDVD is working. iMovie will certainly generate a movie for you that will import into iDVD. However, iDVD will report an error only after attempting to do the processing - this could be after several hours of processing.
If you have an external hard drive, try moving the Event to this drive, as explained above. You will also need to split the Project into two segments and create 2 DVDs (unless you are using dual layer DVDs). Duplicate the Project, then delete the second part from the original and the first part from the duplicate. To duplicate a Project, while in Project Library view (where all your Projects are listed), right-click (or Control-click) on the Project name and select Duplicate Project. Alternatively, in iMovie's menu select File>Duplicate Project.

  • IPhoto sharing solution: NAS drive, cloud or...?

I'd like to share my 85GB iPhoto library wirelessly across a few different MacBooks without having to rely on the main computer being on all the time or even around. I've looked into adding the library to Google Drive or something similar as well as storing it on a NAS drive but can't decide which method would be best.  My only other requirements are that it updates automatically from the main library.

    No
    Many reasons
    1. The iPhoto library must be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled). I do not believe any NAS systems use that disk format
    2. IPhoto is not a mulit user program so multiple users must only use it one at a time if they are editing or making any changes
    3. Wireless connections are I'll advised for working with the iPhoto library. They are too unreliable and can corrupt your library
    4. Your "only other requirement of automatic updates" is not available for iPhoto

  • Sharing footage

Working on a project where someone is gonna mail me footage. They are working with FCP. I've asked them to export the footage to a QT format and then burn it to a DVD. I know that will work, but I also know that I will lose some quality when doing it this way. Would exporting to a different format be wiser. Just trying to be able to share this media without losing much quality. Any recommendations?
    Thank you.

    DV is DV
8 and/or 10 bit is used to termine what flavour of Uncompressed you have.
(Have a look at your Easy Setups one day, you'll see all flavours listed.
H264 is not an editing codec. It's heavily compressed delivery codec. So it will fit on the data DVD just fine. (put an empty DVD disc in your burner. Drag the movie file to it, like you would copy to another harddisk, and then BURN. Thta's how to create a Data DVD. 2 minutes will be less then 500 MB, so it will even fit on a data CD)
Didn't she start with a higher quality?
Once you receive the file you will need to convert the file to DV NTSC.
Also her file dimensions aren't quite right. 640x480.
DV NTSC is 720x480... You'll need to do some scaling.
Can't she deliver as DV NTSC? At least she will know how it will look at your side...

  • Is there a way to have two iTunes music libraries: a library on my computer and a shared library on a NAS server (cloud box)?

I would like to know if I can have two iTunes music libraries: a library on my computer and a shared library on a NAS server (LaCie CloudBox). I want to have some music files on my computer and a larger collection of songs with cover art on a shared CloudBox (NAS server) so that also my family members can listen to the music on the Cloudbox. Is there a way to do this?
I know I could just copy the music files to the CloudBox, but that way only the songs are shared, not the cover art. I could also just keep the files on my computer and share the library via home sharing, but that way my computer would have to be always on. So is there a way to have a shared library on the cloudbox that works regardless of my computer being on or not?
    Thanks,
    Jay

  • Can Apple TV access am iTunes server on a NAS (Qnap)?

My 160GB Apple TV is nearly full now, so to have more content available I am faced with having to leave my PC on all the time and stream from there, rather than storing everything locally on the ATV.
This is not ideal for me. At the same time, I have been considering buying a NAS for general data backup and other purposes. If I get a Qnap NAS with iTunes server installed, can the AppleTV stream from there in the same way as it does with my PC at the moment?
    Thanks

    anderan wrote:
    I don't se why not.
The majority of iTunes servers out there are not compatible with AppleTV - other iTunes libraries may see the NAS server, but AppleTV requires registering a sync/stream library with the iTunes instance with a 5 digit code - if the server can handle this it may work but most will have no way of performing the registartion process.
AppleTV may be available as an Airport speaker to any iTunes instance, but it does not just 'see' shared iTunes NAS libraries as an iTunes instance would.
If the device is actually running iTunes and you can interact you may be able to pair but in genera the answer would be no.
If you can confirm you definitely had it working for sync/streaming then other users would probably love to hear more details.

  • Nested Folder in NAS QNAP TS-219P II not reachable by Canon IR-ADV 2025

    Hello,
    I've got the following problem:
I want so send a scanned document to a NAS. But when accessing the specific subfolder with smb the copier returns "no answere form server" (translated vom german).
Specifically I am trying to access a network share via SMB with a user that has onyl r/w priviliges for one folder (\\NAS\M) that is nested in root\A\M while root\A is also shared as \\NAS\A. But I can only access \\NAS\M if the user has also privileges for \\NAS\A. This is not replicable in windows or ubuntu and I'm guessing it has something to do with the smb implementation of the printer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  • Configuring search db's through NAS

Has any body done configuring two search database
sharing the NAS where the db directory exists?
Machine 1:Portal 1 (with Internet Search DB)
Machine 2:Portal 1 (with Intranet Search DB)
with NAS mount point on each machine.
    Please advise.

If you can post the import agents you created( /var/opt/sun/portal/searchservers/search_instance/config/import.conf), we might be able to find the problem there.
Since a basic import agent is only use the timestamp to import, a looping import might happened if two instances both import from other with same database name.
Here is the basic setup for running two robots on different sites and storing the data in different database name
    search1:robot1 -> databaseA
    search2: robot2 -> databaseB
    You need import agents
    search1:import1 -> search2:databaseB ->databaseB
    search2:import1 -> search1:databaseA-> databaseA
If the collected data from different robots needs to go to same database, then you should set up another database for users to search and you will need following import agents
    search1:import1 -> search2:databaseB -> databaseC
    search1:import2 -> search1:databaseA ->databaseC
    search2:import1 -> search2:databaseB -> databaseC
    search2:import2 -> search1:databaseA ->databaseC

  • WRT600N - Network Sharing / Storage Issues

I recently bought a WRT600N v1.0 from Dell.com and configured the router (I'm a CCNP, so I've been using routers, etc.. for years). I had a WRT54GS v1.0 before this and that worked great for years.
The WiFi (both 5GHz and 2.4GHz) has been rock solid on the WRT600N, but my issue is with the network sharing/storage (NAS) part of the router.
I plugged in a Seagate USB 2.0 750GB HDD (already formatted to NTFS using Windows Vista). I was able to create folders and share them out. However, I cannot map a drive to about half of the folders. All folders are set up the exact same way, and even those I can map a drive to.. the network performance copying files to those shares is horrible (even over Gigabit Ethernet). I'm talking like 1MB/s, when I was getting 20MB/s using my old solution.
When I formatted the disk using the WRT600N, it only allowed me to format it to FAT, not even FAT32 or NTFS. Then it would still only work half the time.
    Any ideas?
This seems like a FW issue, like many brand new Linksys products. I've already contacted Linksys support and they don't have a beta FW available to resolve this either.

    DTSkyCop wrote:
Have you fixed your issues with the storage feature of this router...?  I recently bought the WRT600N router and the SAME exact Seagate HD for the storage link feature.  I have spent over 15 hours numerous phone calls to Linksys Techs and My Computer Works Techs and NOTHING doing, it still does not work right.
I have set up my drive and I to had to FORMAT using the FAT system of the router per one of the Linksys Supervisor Techs.  I did this and set up everything related to my drive and MAPPED all my drives...  I have access to all the drives at first and can move files around and delete from the network.
I wait for a few minutes and open a NEW program and try to SAVE to the network drive location and  get "You Need Permission to Preform This Action.  Try Again or Cancel" are the only options I get and NO REQUEST for a paswsword is given.  I am administrator and cannot now access my drive / network...
The TECH's for MCW are puzzled as well as they initially set the drive and Share folders up.  They cannot figure out why there continues to be a problem accessing the folders on the drive.
I spent 2 1/2 hours tonight on the phone with LinkSys and got really no healp only try this and try that.  While experiencing the problems with the tech on the phone, I preformed a REFRESH on the Storage / Disk page and ALL Share Files I created Disappeared.  I looked physically at my router and discovered the USB was now out...Why?  The TECH thought is was a loose connection.  NEW Router and NEW HD.  Both are in a secure location and no one around to touch them.  I could not get the router to discover the HD plugged into the USB location so I finally unplugged it and plugged it back in.
All setting remained and the router came back up without what seemed to be any hitches.  At this point, I played with the configuration settings while on what seemed like eternal hold and FINALLY got access to the NETWORK drives and was able to save to all the partitions that were created.
The Tech decided that all was OK and we disconnected and guess what...  I again tried to SAVE to the a partition and "You Need Permission to Preform This Action.  Try Again or Cancel" came up again.
I am TRULY frustrated with this NEW SETUP and don't know what to do now.  Can anyone help me fix this thing to make it work right?????
One thing you will learn about LinkSys, is that they have the best prodcuts out there..but if you buy a first generation product (such as the WRT600N), it will have issues that will take firmware updates to resolve the problems. The best thing is to report the issues and wait a few months until several firmware updates come out to resolve the problems.
I recently installed the latest FW update and my WRT600N has been acting "better", but still needs a few more FW updates to fix the other stability issues. I'm fully prepared to wait it out, but it is unfortunate that we have to wait anything out...as LinkSys Q/A should have caught these bugs prior to product release and had them fixed then.
I've tried products from NetGear, Belkin, etc.. and all of them are horrible. At least LinkSys products work once the FW updates come out. I just hope you never need to contact LinkSys support as they are horrible.
    Here's my configuration:
    - WRT600N v1.0
    - Latest FW
    - Seagate 750GB USB 2.0 External HDD formatted to NTFS using Windows Vista
    - Shared folders created using WRT600N
    - Media Server Enabled (still does not work with my Playstation 3)
    - File write performance, still horrible..even over Gigabit Ethernet (around 200KB/s, should be around 4-5MB/s at least)
    - File share mapping, still intermittent.. usually works.. but I noticed it seems to be case senstitive in mapping the drive names (odd)
    - Should have an option to format the HDD as FAT, FAT32 or NTFS (only FAT is used currently)
