Sharing garageband files

Awile back, a poster was asking about sharing GB files and noted that these files (30mb+/-) were too large for email.
Just saw this on an apple seminar site:
"Metheny also takes advantage of Apple Internet services like .Mac to work with band members outside the studio. When he’s working with large audio files, he can drop the files in to his iDisk Public folder. iDisk mounts on the desktop like any other hard drive. Once you drop your audio files into your iDisk Public Folder, and provide read/write access, your colleagues on either Macs or PCs can review, make comments, and place the file back in your Public folder, without ever having to email the large file back and forth or burn a CD."
would this solve the problem and allow people to edit and mix each other's GB songs?

I don't have a .mac account, so I couldn't do it that way (I'd FTP it to one of my servers). I'm so used to using FTP that it's simple for me, but I could see the ,mac method being convenient for folks that have it.

  • Merging Garageband Files

    Hi
I'm getting involved in a music project that will involve me and some other musicians sharing Garageband files. One of us will record some initial tracks, and then will send the file to the others, each making his own contribution. The issue is that in the end, we'll end up with 3 different Garageband files, each with different parts. Is there a way to merge these files so that all the tracks (as well as plug in settings, automation, etc.) can be merged into a single file, so that we can mix the entire song? The only solution I've found involves bringing a mix-down from one file into another, but this looses the ability to adjust the mix on the imported tracks.
    Thanks
    John

The only problem that can arise is when e.g. you send version 1 to, say, the bassist and the guitarist, they are recording their tracks and come up with version 2 and 3, respectively.
What you can do: Open version 2, copy the bass track, open version 3, create an empty bass track, paste the track you just copied. Immediately do a "Save as Archive", otherwise the project won't contain the recording.
I'm not sure if a volume curve is pasted this way (you'd have to lock it to the track before copying). Also, track settings aren't copied, you'd have to manually set them again. Or, if one of the guys created a custom track setting, copy that manually from the GB folder of the other machine (do a Spotlight search by name and put it in exactly the corresponding folder on the other machine).
If possible, you should create all the tracks and their settings in the first place, so each of you has a copy of the project with the same settings.
(I'm not sure this is what you want to do. For groove reasons, I wouldn't encourage recording two parts independently in parallel.)

  • Where is the Garageband file sharing area in iTunes?

I am trying to import some loops that I've made using FunkBox on my iPad which I have then uploaded to my Mac, I now want to import it back into my GarageBand on the iPad. In the Help section of GarageBand it says to add the files to the Garageband file sharing area in iTunes, but I can't find it. Any clues/ I'm flummoxed & just a little frustrated!

You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
Cmd-B to turn on the menu bar. (Ctrl on Windows)
Cmd-S to turn on the sidebar.
Cmd-/ to tunn on the status bar.
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the previous search behaviour.
You can also open the menu bar temporarily by pressing Alt (Windows, not sure of the Mac equivalent).

  • How can I import iPhone Garageband Files to Mac Garageband?

How can I import iPhone Garageband Files to Mac Garageband? I've found lots of threads about this but no direct answers/how to.
    Thanks

With the latest build of GarageBand on the device, move to the My Songs view, tap the Edit button at top right, select the shaking song you want to export, then tap the sharing arrow symbol at top left, tap iTunes, then GarageBand.
Connect the device to iTunes, select it in the left-hand column, then select the Apps tab. You should find the exported file in the File Sharing area of the GarageBand app and from there you can copy it to your computer, then open it with the GarageBand application.

  • HT4692 Ok.  Now how to I get the garageband file BACK onto my iPad?

Ok.  I have successfully transferred garageband files from my ipad to my itunes into file sharing and then saved them onto my mac in a file.  Now, the question is.... how do I (after deleting garageband files off of my ipad) put them BACK on???
My iPad is just too full because of my garageband files.  I want to be able to take these files off and put back on certain ones when I would like to work on them again.  Thanks -R

    Step 1
First you put the the GarageBand Project back onto the GarageBand Documents area of you iTunes File Sharing section and make sure your iPad syncs with iTunes.
    Step 2
Now in GarageBand, go to the My Songs window, click the + button and select "Copy from Tunes". You should see all the GarageBand Projects that are available in your iTunes FIle Sharing section (from step 1). Tap on it to copy the Project to the My Songs window.
    Now you can open it.
    Hope that helps

  • How to delete "Shared Garageband Settings" & "My Garageband Settings" in Logic's library?

    Hey guys,
Does anybody out there know how to delete the "Shared Garageband Settings" & "My Garageband Settings" in the library tab? Basically, I just bought Logic Pro and all it's additional content and there's two folders (read above) which have one or two presets inside them which I know I'll never use. Does anybody what files / folders I'll need to delete?
    Cheers,
    Sid

Are the printer names longer than 30 characters? If so, make sure they are different within the first 30 characters. You should be able to rename your local printer queue without changing the name of the networked printer. Control Panels, Printers and Devices, select your printer, and right-click to "Rename".

  • Sharing GarageBand iOS in iPad music class

iOS apps and devices were conceived as individual tools, but I'm using GarageBand in a classroom full of students with iPads. I want to be able to share GarageBand files with students so that they can add/modify/edit them and send them back to me. This would be invaluable for creating learning/assessment tracks for vocal and instrumental performers. Cloud based storage is there...but seems to be designed for me to share my files between my personal devices - not device to device (person to person). Can this be done? If not, could this functionality be added in an upcoming update? Think of it as GarageBand "Jam Session" with more opportunity for long-term extension and sharing of creative ideas.

That's it! I had already tried emailing it to myself but on iPad mail the file would just open to a playback bar. But if I held down the attachment a little longer, the "open in" window appeared, and on of the choices is Amazing Slow Downer.

  • Transferring GarageBand files from iTunes to iPad 2

I haven't discovered a way to transfer GarageBand files from the MacBook Pro via iTunes to my iPad with GarageBand installed.
I have selected 3 simple files i have done and added them to the GarageBand list on the Apps screen in iTunes. Each is a .band file and doesn't contain any plugins or video.
Each time I sync and open GarageBand on the iPad 2, I select the load icon that is supposed to show these three files from iTunes. Nothing is there.
    Did I miss something?

But that begs the question, "Why the Load File icon?" It doesn't have any function per se that I can see.
i believe that its purpose at this time is for shareing GBi projects between iPads. perhaps a future releasse will allow for GBX to GBi transfers. if it's a feature you want, be sure to let Apple know:

  • Transfer GarageBand files from Windows7 PC to iPad via iTunes

GarageBand for iOS: Sharing songs with iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
According to the above link iTunes for Windows version 11.4 and later is said to have fixed the issue of iTunes displaying GarageBand files as folders. I have been stuck with this for last few months since I performed a factory reset on my iPad Mini. I had backed up my GarageBand working files to my Windows7 PC before proceeding with the factory reset. At the moment I am using iTunes for Windows version 12.0.1.26 (went through 3 or 4 version upgrades since I took the back up) on Windows 7 and I still see the GarageBand files as folders and can't transfer my previously exported files back to my iPad Mini which is running iOS 8.1.1 currently. Am I missing something here? Hoping someone has some answers for me.
    Regards & thanks in advance

  • Cannot open iOS garageband files on Mac

Read various threads; I have GB 2.0.6 on iOS (8.1.3, iPad 2) and OSX 10.0.3 on Mac (Yosemite) with iCloud installed and working mostly.
I can upload files from iOS GB, and their icons get a tiny cloud sigil, but I can't find them on iCloud website or locallly. There is no GB folder.
I set up iTunes to File-share GB, and I've shared several files. They show up in iTunes Apps>File Sharing>Garageband Documents, but again I can't find them or export them from iTunes.
In GB/Mac File>iCloud>Import GarageBand for iOS Song shows a window which says "No Songs"
    Any Suggestions?

That is how it is supposed to be, unfortunately.
GarageBand 10 accesses the GarageBand iOS files, that you share to iCloud, differently. They are not (yet) visible on iCloud Drive.
Use the File > iCloud menu in GarageBand 10 to access the GarageBand for iOS files.
See this Help page to share your GarageBand iOS songs to iCloud:  http://help.apple.com/garageband/ipad/2.0/index.html#chsdfe5c2c2

  • How to put exported iPod Garageband files back onto Garageband?

    Hi,
Last year before I got a new iPod Touch I exported my Garageband song files onto my laptop using the "file sharing" feature on iTunes, at the bottom of the "apps" screen. I now want to put these files back onto Garageband on my latest iPod but am not sure how. The songs have saved  in folders titled *songname*.band and upon entering the folders I am presented with more  folders entitled ontents, media, output and thumbs. There is also a standalone file named ProjectData. I've tried adding the ProjectData file to garageband, but this has no effect.
Both iPods were 4th gen. My current IOS is 6.1.6.
So in short, how can I get the songs contained in these folders back into my iPod touch?
    Thank you for any assistance.

You should be able to sync your projects back to the iPod, if you add the .band files back to the GarageBand file sharing area in iTunes, when you sync your iPod again.
But this will only work, if you did not open the projects in GarageBand on your Mac and convert them to GarageBand for Mac projects.

  • Questions on organizing/sharing music files on 3 PC networked drive

I just added 1Tb network drive to 3 pc home network... I am planning on moving my iTunes music folder from the older, smaller network drive. I exceeded the 160GB size of the old drive when converting all of the WMA losselss files to Apple lossless while maintaining the old WMA files(I still think the Windows Media Player system is superior). With the new addition to our network, I am planning on the 3 pcs sharing music files... (my wife has been using iTunes for a while, I have just recently went over to the dark side)
What is the best way to organize the files??
-How to shuffle all without the folder of Christmas & Holiday music playing.
    -Segregate each users individual files.
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated, I know it would save a lot of time and pain instead of the trial and error method.

Thanks, Jason & Mike. This is how I resolved the problem. Turned out the disk with the data was in NTFS format. Neither my eMac nor my wife's Carbon iMac (prehistoric, in other words) was able to read it, on repeated attempts. In process I discovered (to my surprise) that the external hard drive attached to my eMac (a 320 Gig My Book) was formatted in FAT 32 format, and that the PC laptop (Thinkpad) read from it, and wrote to it, without any problem. (Is FAT 32 less than optimal for use with a pre-Intel Mac?). So I just copied the needed files from the NTFS disk to the FAT 32 disk, via the Thinkpad. When I reconnected the FAT 32 drive to the eMac, it turned out that it was easy [with some fiddling] to put the titles of the new music into the iTunes Library, without having to copy the music itself into iTunes. Making playlists does still seem to have to go manually. Sometimes the "New Playlist from Selection" option automatically gives a name (the original name) to the album from which the music came, sometimes it doesn't. Rationale not clear to me. Other problem: often the sequence is jumbled (this is after I added the whole collection of folders containing music to my iTunes Library in one fell swoop). Usually it was possible to correct this by copying track names for albums one album at a time from the external HD (in Columns view, selecting all the tracks in each folder simultaneously) directly into the playlist; the playlist name then always had to be copied or typed in separately. I don't know if I'm missing an easier route. Also, I see that I have version 4.7.1 of iTunes - I'll download a newer version! Don't know whether newer version will affect what I want to do in a positive sense.

  • In iMovie when I try to share a project to a file on an external hard drive it will work the first time but subsequently it says it is sharing but gives no time and file name and in fact just sits there not sharing the file.

I have iMovie 10.0.4.  I want to transfer some old DV tape videos to MPEG 4 files to be stored on a 4 TB external drive. I successfully imported the video to iMovie, created a project by moving all captured files into a project and the first time I shared the project to a file  it worked as expected.  Every subsequent try to transfer another video would fail to transfer.  When I clicked save it gives the warning that it is too big for iCloud, iso I click create on this computer.  The progress circle comes up with no indication of progress.  The show activity drop down just says sharing to "file" no file name as in the first one and indicates no time remaining.  In fact it just sits there apparently doing nothing.  I'v tried it a half dozen times, deleted everything and started over.  It transfers the first project to file and then nothing on additional tries.  What do I have wrong, am I missing something?

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

  • How do I move GarageBand files from iPad 2 to New iPad?

My laptop is a PC, not a Mac.
At the Apple store I was told it was no problem. I merely back up my iPad 2 and then restore my New iPad (3) from that backup. So far it isn't working and I've tried several times.
Weirdly, when I first set up my New iPad (3) iTunes set it up as the default "Steve's iPad" which is what I called my iPad 2 on iTunes, and  my GarageBand files appeared on my new IPad (3). So I know it's possible.
HOWEVER, I hadn't backed up or synched my iPad 2 in a while, so my newer GarageBand files weren't on it.  So I backed up/synched my iPad 2 and then restored my New iPad to original settings, and clicked on "restore from Steve's iPad"  No luck. No GarageBand files. I tried this several times, with no luck.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Here is how you can export a .band folder to your iPhone, it should work for iPad as well.
    This was my steps
    1. Download iExplorer and install it. Connect your iPhone
    2. Find the folder "com.apple.mobilegarageband" in iExplorers browser
    3. Drag and drop your folder .band to the folder "Documents". (!! Your'e not done yet!)
    4. In GarageBand on your iPhone press the plus-button as you would start a new song. Choose "Copy from iTunes". Choose your imported song.
    5. Start rockin'

  • Screen sharing and file sharing not working on LAN

This is not a Mavericks specific problem since it existed before I upgraded to Mavericks.  I have a LAN that consists of 3 MBPs and 1 MacPro.
Local screen sharing and file sharing works fine on all of these computers except for one MBP.  From this MBP I am able to connect to all of the other computers for screen sharing and file sharing.  But I can't connect to this particular MBP for screen sharing or file sharing from any of the other Macs.
This MBP shows up in the left hand side column under "Shared" on all the other computers.  But I am unable to make a connection from any computer to the problematic MBP.  I get the message, "There was a problem connecting to the server "xxxxxxxx".  The server may not exist or is unavailable at this time".
I have tried toggling off and on screen sharing and file sharing with no effect.  One probably pertinent strange thing that I notice is that under the Screen Sharing set up the green button next to "Screen Sharing:On" is green.  But the message under it states:
"Other users can access your computer's screen
at vnc://johnmacbookproretina/ or by looking for “John MacBook Pro” in the Finder sidebar."
The problem is that my computer name is "John MacBook Pro" and the LocalHostName is "JohnMBPr.local".  I believe that at some point in the past the computer name and/or LocalHostName was "johnmacbookproretina".
Similiarly, under File Sharing I am informed:
"Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at “afp://johnmacbookproretina” or “smb://johnmacbookproretina”."
I would appreciate any help I could get to resolve this perplexing issue.  Thanks.
    John

I've finally been able to solve my own problem.
File sharing and screen sharing on the problematic MBP was being blocked by firewall rules that had been set up several weeks ago when I had installed a trial version of DoorStop X firewall software.  I had previously trashed the app when the 30 day trial ended.  I did not realize that the software had left a set of firewall rules in the Library/StartupItems folder.  Among other things, the rules were set to deny access to the computer on the ports used for file sharing and screen sharing.  Once I trashed the DoorStopStartup folder in the StartUpItems folder all the connection problems resolved with a computer restart.
