Sharing internet between imac & itouch

I'm somewhat new to apple and wifi networking. I'm curious to know if I can plug a usb wireless broadband devise into the AX (or similar devise) to share the connection with my itouch? If so, will I need to reconfigure the AX every time I need to print wirelessly or something? If I'm misunderstanding the concept, please set me straight. Thanks for any enlightenment you all can shed.

If I plug the usb broadband into the AX, my macbook and itouch can both use the connection to the internet?
Sorry, but no. The USB port on the AX will only support USB printers.
Or would I be able to use the usb broadband plugged into my macbook as usual and it be able to share the internet connection through the naked AX to the itouch?
Sorry, but again no this won't work. OS X's Internet Sharing might be an option, but I'm not sure you can share an Internet connection from a USB port. If you could, you would share it between the USB port and the internal AirPort Extreme card in your MacBook. The iTouch would then connect to the wireless network created by the AirPort card.

  • Sharing internet between PowerBook and MacBook

I have been trying to set up internet sharing from my old PowerBook G4 on Tiger to my new MacBook on Panther using Firewire. I have followed advice I've found on this but so far nothing has worked. I have turned on sharing in Network Preferences - Sharing - Internet tab on PowerBook (set to share from Airport connection to FireWire) but am not sure if I need to change any settings on the MacBook, which still says I am not connected to the internet when I open Safari.
Oddly, when I go to System Preferences - Network on MacBook, the left-hand service list shows 'Built-in FireWire' as connected and has a green light but Safari still says that my computer isn't connected to the internet. Another strange thing is that the couple of times I've tried to set this up, the internet works (though very slowly) for a minute or two, then it stops working altogether.
    Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. Basically, the screen is faulty on the old laptop so the colours are all distorted
which is why I bought a new one. I do have a wireless router which is also faulty - it won't go into the mode required to add new connections so I am unable to connect the new laptop until this is fixed. The old laptop still has a wireless connection through Airport which is working fine.

  • File sharing issues between iMac G5 20"/Mac OS 10.5.8 and iBook G3 600mhz/Mac OS 10.4.9.

Both Macs can copy files from each other using the AFP connection.  However, I cannot copy files to another Mac.  So when I try and copy a file from the iMac to the iBook, I get these series of messages:
    1) You May Need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer on this computer to change the item names "filename".
    2) The item "filename" contains one or more items  you do not have permission to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?
    3) The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.
I'm not given the prompt for name and password at any stage.
When I try and copy from the iBook to the iMac, this is the only message I receive:
The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.
I'm not given the prompt for name and password at any stage.
With the iMac, I have the permissions preferences set for my startup drive and external harddrives for Read and Write for all entries.  I can't do that on the iBook because it doesn't have those settings in the Sharing Preferences.
Could the fact that both Macs use the same user/account name and password?  I never had this issue between my iBook and Power Mac G3 300mhz/Mac OS 10.2.8 when having the same name and password.
    All help is appreciated.  Thanks.
    Bill Rudloff

I've done a little reading, and it has to do with under the hood stuff with the Login ID number.  I found how to change it on the iBook, but I can't figure it out on the iMac.  Ideally, I want them to both be 501.  So how do I sent the iMac in Mac OS 10.5.8?

  • Sharing work between iMac and MB

I just purchased a macbook and have already migrated everything over. If I work on a project in iMovie on the MB is there a way the changes can reflect in iMovie on my iMac?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dana

Only if you copy your work from the MB to the iMac. If your computers are on a network you can do that using File Sharing. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "sharing" or "file sharing" to find out how to share files between networked computers.
If you don't have a home network you could use an external hard drive or a USB flash drive as an intermediary for transferring files between the computers.

  • Problems Sharing Files Between iMac's

I've created a network between my to iMac's, and I'm using one of them as a server-
I've created a folder, inside "Public" folder and I've turn "File Sharing" on and done all that it said.
    Selected the folder, and everything.
When I go to my other iMac, I connect to the network with no problem, I see the folder but can modify anything from the iMac that is NOT the "Server".
I've check everything about the "read & write" at the bottom of the folder, and still doesn't work.
Can anybody help me ? I really need this working ASAP.
Thanks to all, and happy new year !!!
    Esmeralda
PS: It's better if I buy a external drive and use it attached to one of the iMac's ? Thanks.

If I understand this correctly. You are using file sharing to do this. And going to connect to server to get access. In file sharing while connected to your home computer they only have read only access. They can drag you apps. to their desktop and copy or modify it, but not on your computer. They can listen to your music . whatch your videos read your mail and use your printer or dvd drive. If you give permission to all. In file sharing there is an xgrid check off which allows users to work together on apps. If you check the xgrid and then the ? in file sharing it tells how to do this.

  • Sharing internet between Macbook Pro and iPad mini

My Macbook pro is connected to a wireless internet hotspot which i pay weekly for, called bizportal. I then have this connected to a Wifi Router. Ive recently purchased an Ipad Mini and would like to connect this to the hotspot too. Ive clicked the internet sharing option in system preferences on my Macbook, but then I look on my Ipad and my Macbook Pro doesnt seem to come up in Wifi options, What can I do now?

You cannot connect the iPad directly to the hotspot? I know nothing about your particular hotspot but I can connect up to 5 devices with the Verizon MIFI2200 that I use. I have connected 3 devices successfully at one time but have never had to try more than that.

  • Shared Internet Connection not working between G3 iMacs

Trying to share an AirPort connection on iMac 1 over ethernet to iMac 2.
iMac 1 is a 400 MHz iMac G3 running OS 10.2.8. It has AirPort and I set the Sharing-Internet pane to share its AirPort connection over Ethernet. The Firewall is off.
iMac 2 is connected to iMac 1 via crossover cable. It's a 500 MHz G3 running OS 10.3.9.
AirPort base station is set to Pass-through for IP addresses, and is connected via the WAN port to a D-Link Dl604 router's LAN port; the router connects to a cable modem via ethernet from its WAN port. The network consists of about 11 Macs and 3 PCs. 4 of the Macs connect by AirPort and 6 plus the PCs connect by ethernet, leaving the odd man out, the iMac 500. I don't use the network to share info between machines, just to allow all to access the internet
In the Network preference pane on # 2, I have a green light for ethernet -- but it isn't being fed the right info in TCP/IP ... the router info is not the IP of # 1 nor is it the IP of my Router or of my AirPort base station -- I have no idea what it's from but it looks like it's self-assigned. The Router address of #2 is 192.168.2.1, and the supposed network address of #2 is 192.168.2.4.
So, iMac 2 won't connect to the Internet. If I unplug the ethernet cable, the TCP/IP info on #2 disappears, but the same info reappears as soon as I reconnect the crossover cable. I have rebooted the machines to no avail.
Now, I also tried a direct connection from #2 to my router in another room (conventional ethernet cable) and #2 had no problem getting online.
I also tried #2 connected to my Dual G4 (running 10.3.9) in a third room, with the G4 sharing its AirPort connection over Ethernet - result is the same as when connected to #1 -- green light, no internet connection, and a wonky router address. To top it off I run Remote Desktop 2.2 from the Dual G4 and it can't see #2 even when the supposed network address on #2 is entered into ARD manually.
The only thing that's right is the subnet mask.
Any ideas? I've done this with other Macs and never had an issue til now. I even started over and reinstalled OS 10.3.9 on the iMac 500, to no avail.
Is there a cache file or plist file somewhere I need to trash? Too bad there is no way to manually "reboot" TCP/IP. I did try the Internet Setup Assistant, and it told me I would have to enter a manual address. I don't get it -- it's fine with a direct connection, but not through a shared connection....

    Solved!
I forgot about permissions and disk repair in Disk Utility. After doing this, the tethering is working again.

  • CONNECT HP LAPTOP TO IMAC SHARED INTERNET

hi can somebody please help me with connecting my new HP Laptop G60 to wirelessly connect to my iMac shared internet? I see my iMac on the HP connect list but when i select it ... it doesnt even give me an option to type my secure password. I get an error that it cannot connect.
    Please help!
    Much thanks !

In case others want help on this. I found the following details also handy:
    See: http://echeng.com/journal/2009/07/06/encrypted-internet-sharing-between-mac-os-a nd-windows-xp/
Specifically, step 4 and 6 are crucial!:
    1. In Mac OS X, enable Internet Sharing to computers using Airport
    2. In AirPort Options, select 128-bit WEP encryption and enter a 13-character password
    3. In Windows, add a new wireless network
    4. Enter the SSID and select WEP encryption with Shared Network Authentication (not Open)
    5. Uncheck “The key is provided automatically” and enter the 13-character password
    6. In the Authentication tab, be sure that “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication” is unchecked
    Hope that helps you!

  • Sharing files between my imac and my MacBook Air?

How do I share files between my imac and my 2nd generation MacBook Air?
I have my imac that holds alot of files that I want to transfer over to my MacBook Air. How do I do this at home through a wireless network. I enabled file sharing on my Imac and MBA. This did not work. Any Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

I've used Apple's file sharing for years but two programs have made my life tons easier. One is the freeware DropCopy - install it on both computers and you'll see a black dot on your desktop. Drag a file onto the dot and it is copied to the other computer. If you have more than 2 computers you can easily select which computer gets the file.
The second is the freeware program DropBox. Like DropCopy you need to install the program on both computer. Unlike DropCopy, DropBox watches a folder on your computer called DropBox and any file put into it gets synced to the cloud and from there copied to the other computer. One of the great things about DropCopy is that you can also access your files via the Internet.

  • TS2756 How can i create a new usb connection (service)  on my iMac for sharing internet from my iPhone5 ( i seem have to deleted it )

How can i create a new usb connection (service)  on my iMac for sharing internet from my iPhone5 ( i seem have to deleted it )
i know its not a problem whit my carrier o data plan or sharing preferences on the ipone because when i use it un my laptop it works perfectly through
the usb and even works on the Imac through wifi and bluethood tethering but NOT through usb!!.
the problem is that trying to make it work i deleted the "profile" usb iphone on the network prefereces panel. Now i only have 3 options: ethernet / wifi / bluetooth
but not the usb iPhone i used to have.
And when i try to add a new one i dont get a USB option.
can some one help me please??
this is how it looks (after the bluetooth PAN i used to have USB iPhone option)

The question would be more appropriate in the Mac forums as it is not really related to the iPhone.

  • Messages not working while using Internet sharing from my iMac ... Any troubleshooting tips/approaches ?

I am connecting to the internet using the Internet Sharing from my iMac ...
The trouble is the messages in the Messages app are not sent when I am connected through my iMac ... When I key in a message and hit send a progress bar appears fills up till 90% and just gets stuck there and after a while the red exclamation mark stating the message was not sent appears ... Now if I connect through my wi-fi router or thether through my phone it works fine ... I can send / recieve messages ...
Similar points to note - Today when I tried to make an App Purchase - The security info screen ( new additon - http://isource.com/2012/04/11/iphone-app-store-security-info-alert/ ) popped up but I got a blank screen for the securtiy questions screen ... It was not loading the screen ... Some games the game center invite does not work through my Internet sharing (tried in MetalStorm) ... but works fine thorough wi-fi or thether ...
What could be the problem with my iMac s sharing? Any suggestions would be really useful ///  Thanx in advance
I am running Lion ... and I have updated to the latest Airport software ...
Only thing I tried was changing the DNS ... but that s not related right ?

Powerline adapters use your home powerlines (mains a/c) to connect your devices via ethernet to your modem, they're easy to set up and the they TOTALLY fixed my ATV problem, the problem seems to be with the wireless. I've been trawling through apple discussions, and did found a workaround to my problem https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4222883?start=0&tstart=0
but its just a workaround :/

  • Not able to use internet sharing on my iMac 8.1 using Mac OS X 10.6.8

Im not able to use internet sharing on my iMac 8.1 using Mac OS X 10.6.8, I tried internet sharing with OS Lion and it works fine. Has anybody else experience this problem and  what was the solutions.

If your OS is OS X 10.4.11 then you should be able to install iTunes 8.1 which according to the iTunes page requires 10.4.10 or later (which is a lower version than yours). It also requires QuickTime 7.5.5 so check your version of QuickTime. Version 10.4 is Tiger by the way. Leopard is 10.5 and Panther was 10.3.
Make sure that your OS is at the version you think it is. Connect your MacBook to the internet and from your desktop go to the Apple symbol on the Finder bar at the top of your screen. Choose "About This Mac" and check your OS version. Also from the same menu choose Software Update and see if you are offered any updates for your computer. If it does offer an OS X update, install it and anything else in the list then run software update again to see if any more components are offered for the new version.

  • Sharing Internet Connection from iMac to MacBook Pro

I've arrived home for the holiday from university and, of course, brought my MacBook Pro home with me. My family does not have a wireless Internet connection as I do at uni, but they do have an iMac connected to a cable modem via ethernet. So I have enabled Internet connection sharing on the iMac and told the iMac not to sleep unless it is inactive for 3 hours (it gets used frequently enough that this shouldn't be a problem, and the computer can go into sleep mode at night). The iMac screen is set to turn off after about 20 minutes, to save energy.
The iMac's sharing is via AirPort and it has a WEP password. I use my MacBook Pro's AirPort card to connect to the iMac's connection. Unfortunately, after about 20-30 minutes of using the wireless on the MBP, the safari web browser claims that I am not connected to the Internet and the AirPort card gets a "self-assigned" IP address. The solution is to restart the MBP.
Why is this happening, and is there anything I need to do on either of the computers to fix the problem? Both computers are running 10.5.1 with all security updates installed. It's frustrating having to constantly restart the computer when I'm using the Internet.

My problem is similar. I'm trying to do internet share from iMac G5 (w/ iSight) to MacBook Pro, both running 10.5.1. The iMac is connected to dsl/router via ethernet, and I'm trying to internet share to MBP via airport. I cannot establish connection, even though airport shows full strength signal. I checked password over and over and over, and that seems fine. But Network preference panel shows airport to have self-assigned IP.
I tried internet share from iMac to MBP via firewire, but that did not work either.
On a (un)related? note, I used to be able to share screen, but only in one direction. I could control the iMac from my MBP, but never the other way around despite the fact all the firewall and sharing is set identical. Now, even though in both computers I have the other computer showing up in the sidebar of the Finder, screen share and file share fails. I just don't know what happened!
