Sharing internet between PowerBook and MacBook

I have been trying to set up internet sharing from my old PowerBook G4 on Tiger to my new MacBook on Panther using Firewire. I have followed advice I've found on this but so far nothing has worked. I have turned on sharing in Network Preferences - Sharing - Internet tab on PowerBook (set to share from Airport connection to FireWire) but am not sure if I need to change any settings on the MacBook, which still says I am not connected to the internet when I open Safari.
Oddly, when I go to System Preferences - Network on MacBook, the left-hand service list shows 'Built-in FireWire' as connected and has a green light but Safari still says that my computer isn't connected to the internet. Another strange thing is that the couple of times I've tried to set this up, the internet works (though very slowly) for a minute or two, then it stops working altogether.
Can anyone help with this?
Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. Basically, the screen is faulty on the old laptop so the colours are all distorted
which is why I bought a new one. I do have a wireless router which is also faulty - it won't go into the mode required to add new connections so I am unable to connect the new laptop until this is fixed. The old laptop still has a wireless connection through Airport which is working fine.

  • Difference between PowerBooks and MacBooks

    Hi there,
I've been looking at the MacBook 2.1GHz new from Apple. A friend who has had quite a lot of experience with Apple computers and laptops mentioned something about the PowerBook (1.something GHz) being better than the MacBook above. Is this correct? I will be using it for internet browsing, word processing, music, videos & movies and a little bit of Photoshop. He said he used one and even though the processor speed is slower on paper- it's overall much better.
Thats just from one person, he could be wrong.
Any advice from an even more experienced person?
    Thanks.

    I guess it depends. I have both a Macbook, and a PowerBook G4 1.5Ghz 15".
    Specs on the Macbook:
    - 2.16Ghz Core2Duo
    - 3GB RAM
    - 120GB HD
    - 13" Screen
    - OS X 10.5
    Specs on the PowerBook:
    - 1.5Ghz
    - 2GB RAM
    - 80GB HD
    - 15" Screen
    - OS X 10.5
The PowerBook is used at work, the Macbook is my general use personal system. Which do I prefer? The PowerBook. WHAT? Yeah, I said PowerBook. My reasoning? The PowerBook runs plenty fast with Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Coda, Firefox, etc, just like the Macbook. However, I like the 15" Matte finish screen better than the 13" Gloss screen. For work viewing it makes life easier. The USB port placement on the PowerBook is better. There is 1 USB port on the left, 1 on the right, making it easy to plug in 2 devices. On my Macbook, when I plug my USB wireless mouse in, it leaves no room for a USB key, etc.
The aluminum on the PowerBook G4 seems cleaner than that of the Macbook. I got my macbook in October, and my powerbook which I just got was used by faculty at my college since 2005 I believe. Having said that, the PowerBook looks cleaner than the white Macbook. I am not a dirty person, however the color white is just not friendly when it comes to daily use at work and home. Also, the PowerBook is said to come with a backlight keyboard (mine doesn't work however :/ ). Finally, the Macbook's speakers are weak to say the least. They face backwards, and are by no means loud. For DVD viewing, I need to have volume at 100%, however with my PowerBook having it at 75% is just like the Macbook 100%, and the PowerBook has a deeper, richer sound.
And the PowerBook just looks more elegant (like the Macbook Pro). Thats just my 2 cents. I still love both.

  • Sharing photos between IPad and MacBook Air

    Hi
How can i import some photos recorded into my IPad and save them into my MacBook Air? I mean, how can i share photos between those equipment?
    Thanks
    Jorge

The simplest and most efficient way would be to use Photo Stream as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2605
Photos on your iPad will immediately appear on your MacBook Air in iPhoto -- as long as your MacBook Air is reasonably recent and OS X and iPhoto are current.

  • Sharing apps between iPad and macbook

    Hi:
I have an Ipad, and I had pages and numbers app installed. Just bougth a Macbook pro
how do I share the apps from Ipad to Macbook?
    thanks.

You can copy the apps from the iPad to your Mac's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases, and you can copy documents to/from those apps and your Mac, but if you want to use Pages and Numbers on your Mac then you will need to buy the Mac OS X versions of them from the Mac App Store - the versions that you have on your iPad (iOS) can't be used on a Mac (OS X), they are different operating systems.

  • Pages and Numbers not sync between ipad and macbook pro. icloud problem?

My Pages and Numbers are stopped synchronizing via icloud between ipad and macbook pro. Everytime I edit something to Pages or Numbers on my ipad, my ipad failed to upload the edited version to icloud. what happened?

I have a slightly different problem with Numbers and Pages failing to sync between a Macbook and iPad via iCloud. I have checked all the obvious settings. I think the problem may be that the Macbook username is my email address, whereas the iPad username is my wife's email address. However, both addresses are named alibis for exactly the same email address from our internet provider – eg we get the same emails, despite appearing to have different addresses. So I don't understand why the iPad cannot pick up Numbers or Pages files that have been opened and saved in iCloud on my Macbook. Other apps, such as iCal, sync perfectly, but i guess they don't use iCloud. Any help appreciated!
(We have tried emailing Numbers files to the iPad, but that is very slow and innefective.)

  • Pages won't sync between iPad and Macbook

I cannot get my pages to sync between iPad and Macbook.
I regularly go back and forth between the two because it's easier to read/edit on iPad and easier to type/copy-paste web info on Macbook.
I'm finding right now that I have done a multitude of edits on my iPad that are not showing up at all when I open the same document on my Macbook.
I have closed the document on my iPad so I expected there to be no problems when I opened it on my Macbook.
Not sure why or what to do....?

I had this issue too - I have been playing around with it for a few days - turns out you need to save the documents on your mac not under "documents" but rather under "Pages - iCloud" (or "Keynote - iCloud" etc.). After doing this, the document appears on my phone, iPad, iCloud.com etc. with the changes.
One way to do this is by clicking the dropdown arrow (it shows up when you mouse over the title) to the right of the title of your document on the grey title bar (the thing at the top of the page - above insert, table, chart etc.) and then editing the "where" column.
Hope this helps! If it isn't clear enough, please let me know!

  • Hello there - how can I share my iTunes library between two users on the same computer? I put the library in a shared folder between both and have selected this library on both as well, but when I update iTunes with music etc it only appears on one?

Hello there - how can I share my iTunes library between two users on the same computer? I put the library in a shared folder between both and have selected this library on both as well, but when I update iTunes with music etc it only appears on one?

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

  • Sharing files between users and macs

My husband and I share an iMac. I have a MBA for traveling and my husband a PC laptop (though he rarely uses for private stuff). We both have iPhones.
We are looking for a way to:
    - Share our photos (we don't use iPhoto) and some files. We would like to have this in one shared folder, that we can access from both accounts in the iMac, the MBA and ideally (though not a must) the PC and iPhones. We would both need to have admin rights to edit documents, etc.
    - Have access to all the information in my account on the iMac from the MBA. Ideally, same thing for his and the PC.
    - Have access to all the data remotely when traveling.
    - Have all the data backed up locally (we already have a cloud backup, but we'd like to have a local backup too as it's easier and quicker to access)
We have read a lot about configuration, NAS, time capsule... but we get more and more confused, as we are obviously no tech experts.
Dropbox is not our preferred choice. We already have a cloud backup system. We'd rather have the files stored and accessed locally for everyday use.
Using a NAS to store shared folders and backup the rest sounds good, but they either seem very complicated to set up, or they have mixed reviews in terms of stability, especially to access files remotely.
Timecapsule seems easier and more straightforward, but I'm not sure it would solve the "sharing files between users and macs with admin rights"? It seems to be more focused on backing up the main drive and then providing access to the backed up files. (Though I might be completely mistaken!)
We just can't manage to have one shared folder between both accounts in the iMac. We need to grant admin rights document by document. We don't manage to make it work automatically so we both have one folder to access with full rights for all the contents inside it. And this seems to me like something that should easily be done...?
Any help, advice, proposals... would be greatly appreciated!!!

Move any file you want to the other user to access to the Shared Folder. Anything you put in that folder is available to all users.
    The shared folder is here:
Macintosh HD > Users > Shared

I am curious if possibly the hotel has some sort of VOIP block on.  Have you tried Skype?  Did you talk to the hotel staff?  My husband is traveling to Milan in a couple of days and I wonder if he will run into the same issue.  He has had no problems from Istanbul but he is staying in a corporate apartment there.  If you find an answer please post back.  Thanks

Is the numbers app compatible between ipad and macbook for syncing?

I think i have found how to solve the problem. I went into address book preferences and i noticed i didn't have icloud enabled here. As long as i use icloud contacts rather than 'on my mac' contacts it now seems to delete and add across the 2 devices. Many thanks

  • Sharing keywords between LR and PSE 9 Organiser? :-(

OK, I've owned 3 photo products from Adobe (Photoshop Album, Lightroom and Photoshop Essentials) and have 3 keyword file formats! I use LR as my main photo organiser and have started using PSE and its Organiser but am frustrated by the lack of coherent design of keyword files. I have hundreds of keywords in LR. I had to write some Python code to convert my "Album" keywords to the LR format and it seems I have to do the same to get keywords from LR into PSE's organiser. But there's now a new problem...
Unfortunately when I import keywords into PSE's Organiser any duplication of existing keywords results in duplication in the keyword list - i.e. when I add "From file.." PSE adds to the list rather than merging! PSE is clearly not designed to re-load keywords from file any extend the keywords. If I export all my keywords and re-import them I don't expect the number of keywords to double! Oh - I can;t delete keywords before importing because I'm told everything it's 'learned' (people etc. will be lost).  Keywords appear to be exportable but not importable.
I clearly cannot import keywords into PSE's organiser as I can with LR.
Is anyone sharing keywords between LR and PSE's Organiser?

Thanks, I can see how that can work and the problems. It looks like the keywords themselves cannot be easily shared and I agree that having two organising programs is problematic but I wanted to 'export' the keywords I have created including their structure from Lightroom and import them into PSE organiser. You'd think you could do this with two similar products from the same company. The organisers in question are used for two purposes and the photos in each are different - i.e. I use lightroom for my pro stuff and PSE for family/casual stuff and no photo would be present in both. It looks like PSE really isn't designed to import keywords. I have Python code to create a PSE keyword file from a lightroom file so that will have to do as it's clear there's no interoperability.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • How to synch calendars between iPad and MacBook Pro?

How do I synch calendars between iPad and MacBook Pro?

Thank you for your help. However, I still have no connection; could it be that the laptop is signed in through my account and the iPad through my wife's?
If so, must I delete her iCloud account and reestablish it as mine?
    Thank you

  • How to create shared folder between mac and windows

how to create shared folder between mac and windows

Us ean external drive formatted FAT32 or ExFat. Both OSx and Windows can read/write to the drive and both can use the same data files as long as you have a program that can open and save these files. For example, Word running both on OSx and on Windows will be able to work with the same document on the external drive.

  • How is it best to keep files synced between iMac and Macbook?  I work from home on my iMac and then out in meetings on my Macbook and need to have access to the same files on both.

How is it best to keep files synced between iMac and Macbook?  I work from home on my iMac and then out in meetings on my Macbook and need to have access to the same files on both.  The folders are using Microsoft programmes as this is compatiable with 90% of my colleagues, therefore I can't use the Icloud service.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • Disc sharing between G5 and Macbook?

I have an Aluminum Macbook who's optical drive does NOT like my Microsoft Office 2008 disc for some reason. The disc works in every other computer we have (Powerbook and G5) and every other DVD and CD I have tried works just fine in my Macbook. Here's the issue - how can I install Office 2008? I have disc sharing enabled on both the G5 and the Macbook, but I'm not seeing the "Remote Disc" in the Devices section of Finder. Both have the most up to date version of DVD and CD Sharing. The G5 is 10.4, the Macbook is 10.5....any help is VERY much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
