Sharing internet connection, not using WEP?

It appears to be impossible to share an internet connection wirelessly between two computers with anything other than WEP. Ideally, I'd want to use WPA or WPA2. I have an iMac which is connected to a wired network, and I would like to use it to allow me to connect to the internet with my iBook wirelessly. However, I am reluctant to do it with WEP due to the inherent insecurity with it.
Am I scuppered, or is there an option that I'm missing?

You are missing a wifi router. Unfortunately internet sharing only support WEP. So if you want real security then you would be better investing in a wireless router.
Until then you could send apple a feature request and maybe they will add WPA as a feature in a future update.

  • Shared Internet Connection not working between G3 iMacs

Trying to share an AirPort connection on iMac 1 over ethernet to iMac 2.
iMac 1 is a 400 MHz iMac G3 running OS 10.2.8. It has AirPort and I set the Sharing-Internet pane to share its AirPort connection over Ethernet. The Firewall is off.
iMac 2 is connected to iMac 1 via crossover cable. It's a 500 MHz G3 running OS 10.3.9.
AirPort base station is set to Pass-through for IP addresses, and is connected via the WAN port to a D-Link Dl604 router's LAN port; the router connects to a cable modem via ethernet from its WAN port. The network consists of about 11 Macs and 3 PCs. 4 of the Macs connect by AirPort and 6 plus the PCs connect by ethernet, leaving the odd man out, the iMac 500. I don't use the network to share info between machines, just to allow all to access the internet
In the Network preference pane on # 2, I have a green light for ethernet -- but it isn't being fed the right info in TCP/IP ... the router info is not the IP of # 1 nor is it the IP of my Router or of my AirPort base station -- I have no idea what it's from but it looks like it's self-assigned. The Router address of #2 is 192.168.2.1, and the supposed network address of #2 is 192.168.2.4.
So, iMac 2 won't connect to the Internet. If I unplug the ethernet cable, the TCP/IP info on #2 disappears, but the same info reappears as soon as I reconnect the crossover cable. I have rebooted the machines to no avail.
Now, I also tried a direct connection from #2 to my router in another room (conventional ethernet cable) and #2 had no problem getting online.
I also tried #2 connected to my Dual G4 (running 10.3.9) in a third room, with the G4 sharing its AirPort connection over Ethernet - result is the same as when connected to #1 -- green light, no internet connection, and a wonky router address. To top it off I run Remote Desktop 2.2 from the Dual G4 and it can't see #2 even when the supposed network address on #2 is entered into ARD manually.
The only thing that's right is the subnet mask.
Any ideas? I've done this with other Macs and never had an issue til now. I even started over and reinstalled OS 10.3.9 on the iMac 500, to no avail.
Is there a cache file or plist file somewhere I need to trash? Too bad there is no way to manually "reboot" TCP/IP. I did try the Internet Setup Assistant, and it told me I would have to enter a manual address. I don't get it -- it's fine with a direct connection, but not through a shared connection....

    Solved!
I forgot about permissions and disk repair in Disk Utility. After doing this, the tethering is working again.

  • Connecting to shared internet connection through Mac osx 10.7 wifi

I can't get my new HP touch pad to connect to my wireless network. I connect my iMac through ethernet but have a wifi network setup from my iMac so my other devices can use my iMacs shared internet connection. The touchpad will not connect, it finds the network, I put in the WEP key and it states "unable to connect, try again". I am at the setup stage on the touch pad and can't get any further!!. I have tried everything I can think of including creating a new wireless network, disabling and changing the sharing password and re-enabling. all my other devices still log on fine and can connect to the internet through the iMacs connection. anyone got any ideas?

Ad-hoc-sharing can't be the problem, because when I use the exact same method without any WEP encryption, so create an open network, it works perfectly - so it has to be an error in the webOS' handling of WEP or similar...
I'm curious that the Mac offers only ASCII (key length of 5 characters) or 128 bit encryption, but not 64bit (which has a key length of 10 hexadecimal characters and works perfectly with my touchpad).  <Wiki definition of WEP.>
This sounds like an old problem we used to have when Palm came out with WiFi-enabled devices. Users would create an ASCII text password in their router, and it would generate a 10 character hexadecimal string that was the true password.  Entering the 5-digit ASCII code would fail since it was a seed, and not the "real" code.. Entering the 10-digit key worked every time.
By any chance is this what is occurring on the Mac? Do you see a 10 digit code generated anywhere in the setup routine?

  • Sharing internet connection - HOW?

I'm sharing internet connection with a PC via netgear. Now we want to add another ibook to the connection. How do I open the network so that it can share the connection? It keeps saying that the network password is incorrect, when it's not... Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Are you using WEP?
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.
I have found this to be the case with all the Netgear routers I have used.

  • Do you need internet connection to use pacman? [solved]

    Yes you do.
    Sorry for the dum question,
Do I need to have internet connection to use pacman?
    Thanks
The reason I ask is because I need madwifi for my wireless and Arch does not allow me to install this file using pacman -A ......

Any particular reason for not using the already built package in extra ?
    http://archlinux.org/packages/search/?q=madwifi
You can get it from any mirrors, for example :
    ftp://ftp.belnet.be/packages/archlinux/ … pkg.tar.gz
Btw, pacman has a feature which might be useful :
    pacman -Sp madwifi ~
    resolving dependencies... done.
    http://mir1.archlinuxfr.org/archlinux/extra/os/i686/madwifi-utils-0.9.3.1-1.pkg.tar.gz
    http://mir1.archlinuxfr.org/archlinux/extra/os/i686/madwifi-0.9.3.1-1.pkg.tar.gz
madwifi depends on madwifi-utils, so you'll want to download this package too.

  • Do I need continuous internet connection to use cc

I frequently do not have an internet connection. Can I still use Photoshop and Lightroom when disconnected?

Do I need to be online to access my desktop apps?
No, the desktop applications in Creative Cloud, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, are installed directly on your computer, so you don’t need an ongoing Internet connection to use them.
An Internet connection is required the first time you install and license your apps, but you can use the apps in offline mode with a valid software license. The desktop apps will attempt to validate your software licenses every 30 days.
Annual members can use the apps for up to 99 days in offline mode. Month-to-month members can use the software for up to 30 days in offline mode.

  • Internet connection not waking up with ibook

Hi. I have an ibook G4 and connect to the internet via Airport Extreme, using a router (Xbox). This has been working perfectly for months. Then recently I had to change some settings on my router. Since then I've found that the ibook won't connect to the internet again after it goes to sleep without me opening and closing the applications several times. It has also suddenly disconnected in the middle of a session once or twice. I've also found that I can't change the configurations on my airport base station without plugging it directly into the ibook, which I didn't have to do before. So far it has all worked in the end, but I hate having no idea why this is happening in case one day it goes down and I can't get it back up again.
BTW, the airport connection itself seems to be fine.
Really grateful if anyone can help.

  • Do you need a internet connection to use youtube?

Do you need a internet connection to use youtube?

The only alternative would be to download the video from YouTube on your computer and then, presuming it's one of the h.264 videos (Flash videos will not work on an iPod touch), you could then probably load it onto your iPod and view it with the iPod needing to be connected to the Internet. But you still need an Internet connection for your computer.

Yes to download apps and other media you need an internet connection. You can sync them from your computer.
Some apps require an internet connect to function, most do not.

  • Do I need an internet connection to use Adobe CC14

Do I need an internet connection to use Adobe CC14?

    Hello,
so sorry, this Adobe website didn't change into english language: Adobe Creative Cloud – Häufig gestellte Fragen >>>  Funktionsweise  >>>  Muss ich ständig online sein, um die Desktop-Applikationen der Creative Cloud nutzen zu können?
Nein.
    What means something like:
An internet connection is required for the initial installation and licensing of desktop tools. With a valid software license, the applications can also be used offline. Note that the CC installed applications you will call every 30 days to validate your software license. You can use the installed CC applications for up to 99 days offline.

  • Airport autoreconnect not using WEP!

My airport wouldn't autoconnect so I ran the assistant (for the first time) and now it autoconnects after a wake from sleep, cycle of the airport, or power off, but it doesn't use the WEP password (so I don't have a real connection) any ideas?
    Base station = netgear MR814v2

If your wireless connection is using WEP, your Mac would need to use the same WEP password to connect to that network.
If your Mac isn't properly using the WEP password then it isn't accessing that network... not even partially.
What makes you think that your Mac is not using WEP? What makes you think that your Mac is connecting to the network?

  • INTERNET CONNECTION NOT DETECTED message with Crystal Reports 2011

    Hello:
We upgrade from SQL 3008 R2 to SQL 2012 SP1.   Had trouble with Crystal Reports not opening reports.  Information on the internet indicated that you had to reinstall Crystal Reports after upgrading SQL.  We did a repair of Crystal Reports 2011.  I have the box checked to check for updates when Crystal Reports starts.  I am now getting INTERNET CONNECTION NOT DETECTED and the application will not check for updates.  We have tried turning of the firewall and almost everything else we can think of.  I have access to the internet from that server and IE9 works just fine.  Can anyone help, please.
    Thank You,

  • TS2621 From my iPad I get CannotConnect To The Server error message. The iPad is new and I have never received an email via the icloud acct. My PCM receives icloud mail, no problem. Internet connectivity not an issue.

From my iPad I get an error message "cannot connect to the server". Internet connection not the problem. No problem receiving mail from icloud on my PC. I think it was a set up issue. iPad is new and receives mail from hotmail no problem. It just will not connect to the icloud server.

I am having this same issue.  I can access these accounts from computers, other locations on others' computers, but I cannot get the mail from one account on either my iPhone or iPad.  I've deleted the account on the iPad and re-installed it, but it still will not receive mail.
    Frustrating.

  • Do I have to have an active internet connection while using Audition

Do I have to have an active internet connection while using Audition?  Sometimes I will want to take it on my laptop to places where I will be unable to get an internet connection.  Will the program still work in such cases?

As long as you aren't using the Cloud for audio file storage, yes it will. I believe that it may occasionally need to "phone home" to check your credentials if you are using a CC version but only about once a month. It should warn you though I think but providing you have been using it at home in the days before you are away from the internet it should be OK.
