Sharing Internet with another Mac via Bluetooth

I'm trying to help my wireless-less iMac G5 get online. It sits about two inches away from a MacBook Pro on my desk, which connects to the household wireless network via the in-built AirPort card. I'm hoping I can share that AirPort connection via Bluetooth.
Both systems are running Leopard, although the G5 is running a vanilla 10.5.0 install since I can't update without an Internet connection. The MacBook Pro is up-to-date and then some.
On the MacBook Pro, under System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Advanced, I've checked "Share my Internet connection with other Bluetooth devices." Under Sharing, I've turned on Internet Sharing from AirPort to Bluetooth PAN. I've also paired the devices together.
I'm trying to connect from the iMac G5 to the MacBook Pro with "Connect to Network" in the Bluetooth menu. However, it's grayed out. If I do the same from the gear menu in System Preferences -> Bluetooth, nothing occurs.
This seems like a pretty complicated process for a technology that's meant to make networking child's play.

You're making life very complicated for yourself!
1) Bluetooth is far too slow for sharing an internet connection, unless you like accessing the internet at dial-up speeds or less.
2) As the computers are so close, just run an Ethernet or Firewire cable between the two to create a network, and share the internet connection over Ethernet or Firewire.
3) You can easily update the G5 to the latest Leopard by downloading the standalone updater on the internet connected Mac from the Apple web-site, then just copy the Update to the G5 via CD, DVD, USB Disk, Firewire Cable, Ethernet Cable, external hard disk etc...

  • Sharing files with another mac

I have some videos on Iphoto that I want to share with another Mac via the cloud. How do they find it on their computer?

One of the most secure way to share files over the internet is to use an sftp server.
Goto your system preferences-->sharing-->turn on remote login.
Then on your router's or firewalls port forward tcp port 22 to your mac. Then you can log into each others mac using an SFTP client such as transmit or cyberduck.

i am not able to connect with another ipod via bluetooth can u pls help me

Are yo trying to pair via an app that supports BT pairing?  If you are I would try:
    - Resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
-Resetting network settings on the iPod: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

  • How to connect with another Mac via AFP

My parents have a Mac (10.4.8) which is in a different location than my own. They would like to send me some files however, I thought it would be easier if I could just log into their computer from mine, and grab the files myself.
How is this done, if at all? I have the AFP address of their computer (file sharing is on as is Apple Talk on both machines) but can't seem to get this to work by using the connect to server command?
    Any help much appreciated!

If you have broadband internet then why not send the files via email. Quick, simple.
If your computers can be connected via Ethernet or wireless, then you can use file sharing. However, you must be able to communicate directly. That means connecting an Ethernet cable between the two computers or being able to communicate wirelessly - wireless modem, Ethernet modem connected to a wireless router, and Airport cards in both computers. • Sharing Video with another Mac

I have several Video files of TV Shows downloaded with iTunes on my Power Mac G5 which is primary computer at home and is located in my study. The PM is connected to my home LAN and has AirPort. I want to play the videos on my 17" PowerBook via Airport connection or via its ethernet connection while lounging im family room where there's a nice log fire burning. Both computers are running iTunes 6.0.1 (3).
So, I crank up iTunes on the Power Mac and ensure Music sharing is active and computer doesn't sleep.
The Power Book has great AirPort signal strength in the Family Room but when I fire up iTunes on it all I can see in the Shared Music is MUSIC and NO video files show up at all. Why is this ? Why would videos be special cased and not shared ? The iTunes is all about music and I wonder if Video such as the TV Shows I've downloaded aren't considered music and therefore aren't shared.
Can Video files be shared to another computer on same LAN just like music files can be ?
I searched the Help but found no help on this matter.
Any insights appreciated as I really would like to watch my video TV Shows in more comfort (ie Family Room) compared to my study location, and I don't want to have to copy the fairly large Video TV Show files across to my Power Book from Power Mac in order to watch them on the Power Book.

Sharing does not work for purchased videos.
As a workaround burn them to a DATA CD/DVD through iTunes and use the resulting disk(s) on your PB - Videos will play off the disk without importing them to your PB's iTunes Library.

  • Sharing the internet from a blackberry via bluetooth?

    Hello,
I am very excited about getting a macbook pro tomorrow! I was wondering, can I share the internet from a blackberry via bluetooth? it is a 8700c blackberry.
also, how are the speakers in the macbook pro? (better than a 12" iBook?)
one last thing, I am switching from a 700MHz eMac with 512MB RAM. How much faster is the Macbook Pro than this eMac?
    Thanks,
    TheMacGuy12

last I read, it was not possible to tether from a blackberry.
I went the route of the motorola Q, and Treo 700p because of this limitation..
    *EDIT*
the $700 bounty to get this working was collected, but the person is charging $50 for the hack

  • Is it possible to share networks with another mac (MacBook)?

Is it possible to share networks with another mac (MacBook)?
I want to be able to create a document on my computer and save it on both my MacBook Pro and another MacBook. Also, I want to be able to open documents saved only on the MacBook on my MacBook Pro. Is that possible on the same wirelss?
    Thank you!

You would not want to use ad hoc networking if you also need to access the internet. I'm not even sure it is possible.
How are you accessing the internet from these Macs now? If you have a wifi (or wired) network that you both access in your work location, you should be able to use File Sharing across that network, so you shouldn't need the ad hoc network.
    Some general observations:
You'll need a plan for how to keep straight which Mac holds the most current version of a file. That should probably be to keep each file in only one place (your Mac, the other Mac, a local file server, a cloud server). Even in our home, with one person doing most of the file accessing, I find a central location works best for this; in my case, that's a desktop system that stays on all the time, but a disk attached to my AirPort Extreme base station, a Time Capsule, or a NAS would serve.
If you make use of the portability of the MacBook[Pro]s to work in different locations, you'll also need a plan that includes that working away from the main work location. If you often work with common files while away from your main work location, a cloud solution may be best even with just two of you. Depending on the size of your files, one of the free cloud solutions may suffice; most offer paid expansion as your needs grow.

  • How can I share contact list with another MAC

How can I share my contact list with another MAC?

    Hi,
There does seem to be a presumption in the other reply that your girlfriend is living with you.
A File transfer via Bonjour would then work.
Also the File Sharing in System Preferences > Sharing would cause her computer to show up on your Finder's side bar as a Share.
With iChat if you both have AIM Login names you could still do File Transfers.
(It is slightly more complicated if you have Jabber ID logged in alothough not impossible).

  • Sharing Internet with xbox 360

Hi, I have my Powerbook sharing internet with my Xbox 360. The connection works well and I am able to play games, but the NAT is listed as Moderate, with a Moderate NAT I am not able to do private voice chats with people. Does anyone know how I can get my NAT to Open? Also, I would like to share my media with my Xbox that is stored on a Windows XP computer. I followed all the steps given at www.xbox.com/pcsetup, but the Xbox still does not see the computer.
Any help would be appreciated, Thnx

If you are using Internet Sharing on your PowerBook you can forget trying to modify NAT settings or make nearly any other adjustments. There are very, very, very few options.
If you want to make adjustments like that you need to get a real base station.
