Sharing Internet With Windows XP - Firewall Off Only (How to unblock UDP)

Hi
I can share my Mac connection with my windows PC but only if the firewall is off.
On the Tiger forums it says go onto services and click the advanced tab and unblock UDP traffic - and then firewall can be turned on.
This option doesn't seem to be available in Panther - so until I upgrade can anyone tell me how I unblock UDP traffic in Panther?
Thanks

Hello albertoPeralta. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To open ports on the Time Capsule, you would use the AirPort Utility to configure Port Mapping.
AEBSn - Port Mapping Setup
To setup port mapping on an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:
1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the Shakespeer host device.
Internet > DHCP tab
o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
o Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
o Reserve address by: MAC Address
o Click Continue.
o MAC Address: <enter the MAC (what Apple calls Ethernet ID if you are using wired or AirPort ID if wireless) hardware address of the host computer>
o IPv4 Address: <enter the desired IP address>
o Click Done.
2. Setup Port Mapping on the AEBSn.
Advanced > Port Mapping tab
o Click the "+" (Add) button
o Public UDP Port(s): 4000
o Private IP Address: <enter the IP address of the host server>
o Private UDP Port(s): 4000
o Click "Continue"

  • Sharing internet with Windows over AirPort

My G5 tower is connected to typical home router via ethernet. This gives it flawless internet connectivity.
To give better wireless access to mobile devices that come to that room for a visit in the far corner of the house where the G5 is located, I got a used AirPort Extreme card for the G5 and installed it, making sure to attach the antenna connector and small t-shaped external antenna (provided with original G5) plugged in the back.
When I powered the G5 back on, it immediately saw the AE card and told me to review settings and press Apply. Under Network prefs, under "Location: Automatic", I chose "Show: AirPort." An AirPort ID is shown, along with the default setting below: "By default, join 'Automatic.'" I left all other network settings as they are--I am not trying to use AirPort to connect the G5 to the main wireless router, since it already has ethernet.
I went to the "Sharing" pref and chose the third pane under it, "Internet". I configured it to read: Share your connection from built-in ethernet . . . using (checkbox on) AirPort. I clicked on the AirPort options in this same pane, and typed in a network name: "ABC wi-fi". Channel is Automatic, and--to keep things simple for now--I left encryption off. I pressed OK to close that small dialog, then hit "Start" in the Sharing/Internet pane, which makes its status message change to "Internet sharing on: sharing your built-in ethernet connection." Success! Well, no.
The AirPort icon in the menu bar was a blank quarter-pie. So I clicked on it, and saw the "open internet sharing" option. A panel appeared where I could turn airport on. I did. The grayed-out Network line of the pane then showed the name of the network I had created back in the Sharing dialog: "ABC wi-fi." And the signal level indicator shows full power, all to the right. All set? Nope! When I go to my Windows laptop and find this new network, I see two new options: One, strangely, is the "Computer Name" shown in the Sharing pref panel, and clicking on it to connect doesn't work. The other option is the network I actually named and shared, "ABC wi-fi," but when I attempt to connect to it, Windows (actually Intel PROSet/Wireless Wi-Fi Connection Utility) insists on stepping me through a series of complex security settings, when it would seem that no security should be required since I didn't enable encryption on the AirPort connection.
Giving up on those security settings, I go back to the Sharing control panel and turn sharing off. I hit the AirPort options button and turn encryption on I leave on WEP 40-bit, which requires me to type in a five character string. I do so. I click OK and restart internet sharing. Again, I am given confirmation of "Internet sharing on: sharing your built-in ethernet connection." I try to connect from Windows again, but am not even presented with the complex security options. It just says "Unable to connect," even though it can clearly see the SSID. I try the same a few more times--no luck. I go get an iPod touch and select the new G5-based network--type in the five characters required for WEP 40-bit, and jump right on. Why can't my Windows 7 laptop connect?

Good advice from rccharles, do try that, but I'm wondering if it might be related to Digitally sign communications, even though this talks about server & connecting the other way...

  • Sharing Internet with windows, connected by ethernet, using mac's airport

So I have a desktop that doesn't have Wi-Fi and I too cheap to buy anything for it. So I'm trying to use the MacBook's airport to give the Windows internet through the ethernet connecting them both.
I went to internet sharing and entered "Share connection from: Airport" "To computers using: ethernet." and that's all I got up to so far.

Now connect the two computers via an Ethernet Cable and you should have internet access on the PC.
Make sure you set up the PC to use the Ethernet port for network / internet use.

  • Sharing Internet with xbox 360

Hi, I have my Powerbook sharing internet with my Xbox 360. The connection works well and I am able to play games, but the NAT is listed as Moderate, with a Moderate NAT I am not able to do private voice chats with people. Does anyone know how I can get my NAT to Open? Also, I would like to share my media with my Xbox that is stored on a Windows XP computer. I followed all the steps given at www.xbox.com/pcsetup, but the Xbox still does not see the computer.
Any help would be appreciated, Thnx

If you are using Internet Sharing on your PowerBook you can forget trying to modify NAT settings or make nearly any other adjustments. There are very, very, very few options.
If you want to make adjustments like that you need to get a real base station.

  • How to use Time Capsule via INTERNET WITH WINDOWS 7 SMB Cloud

how to use Time Capsule via INTERNET WITH WINDOWS 7 SMB Cloud

Get a vpn router.. I have no idea where you are in the world but you can find reasonable stuff for not too much money or even a general router that takes third party firmware like dd-wrt can run openvpn.
Set up the vpn router in place of the TC, as the main router in the network. Simply bridge the TC and place it behind the router. It will be accessible as part of the network via the vpn.
This is the only safe way to do it via windows.
    http://www.dyncommunity.com/questions/18132/accessing-time-capsule-from-windows- 7-over-the-int.html
If you google around I have seen posts about how to access TC by port forwarding SMB on the TC.. using a different port.. To me this is going to slow down the hackers by a day or two.. then they will discover the open port and access your network.. not just the TC.. they now have SMB access to everything. Don't do it. There is very little security on SMB.

  • SHARE TIME CAPSULE AS THROUGH INTERNET WITH WINDOWS 7 SMB

SHARE TIME CAPSULE AS THROUGH INTERNET WITH WINDOWS 7 SMB

Most ISP correctly block SMB over internet. It is too insecure .. use VPN to a different router and place the TC behind it.
Besides TC does not expose SMB to WAN.. same reason. You have to port forward SMB.
You can use SMB on some strange port.. there are instructions if you want you networked just use them.

  • New to Mac - File sharing issue with windows PC?

    Good day
I have a win7 pc with all my movies storred on.  I shared the folder on the network, and can access the folder from my windows pc and my MacMini.
The problem is that my MacMini does not pic up all the files/folders on the shared folder.  I would guess it only picks up about 80% of the files/folders.  When I connect to the shared folder from the windows 7 pc it picks up everything.
    More info:
    Win7 Home (all updates done)
3tb drive (not sure what you call it, but it was formated with NTFS guid table)
Full read Write share enabled to everyone
    MacMini Latest hardware and OSX.
Shared folder shows in shared part of finder.
Already did a restart of both PC and Mac
Already did a clean-up on mac.
The mac connects via wi-fi and win pc via ethernet
Please help me on what more I can try

I've seen this a long time ago, seems SMB on the Mac was limited to the number of listings, if you Share an inner folder, does OSX show more files in that folder?
No idea if this works in 10.8, but will mention it...

Did you lose your shared folders with the update of Mac OS X from Snow Leopard to Lion? You can’t see your shared folders from your DVR or Medicaneter boxes hooked up to your TV? The internet tells you to install gigabytes of developer tools and use tons of command-line instructions to regain the ability to see your mac from your other devices in the house after moving to Lion? We might be able to help.

  • Lion server file sharing issue with windows API read/write ini file (GetPrivateProfileString)

    Hello,
I try to config lion server as file server for a windows application we use at work. All other computers are windows 7 or XP, lion server is the only mac. I choose lion server because it's size, quality and personal love of apple products.
10.7.2 lion server's samba file sharing works almost perfectly with all my windows machines, I can copy, delete, modify any text files or office files without any issue, but the most important windows application for my business doesn't work with samba file sharing. After some digging, I found it is because windows program can't read or write INI file stored on lion share. Windows API GetPrivateProfileString always returns empty if the INI file is store on lion share.
You can download a small application for read/write windows INI file from codeproject.com to test this problem:
    http://www.codeproject.com/KB/files/ini.aspx
I can open/edit the in file using any text editor without any problem. The only problem is with those windows APIs. ACL is turned on for my lion share and assigned "delete" rights to samba users.
I install samba3 on the same server; it works perfectly with windows API. My windows program also works. Looks like there is something wrong with lion server's sambax.
I'd prefer to use built-in samba even I have samba3 working. Built-in samba is very immature right now, but considered how young it is, I will give apple some time to make it mature.
Does anyone have same issue or knows how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Michael.

All the memory is fine. The server rarely if ever goes down when there are only around 10-12 users connected. When there are 20+ users connected and working heavily it goes down often. When I say working heavily, I mean they are transferring huge files to the SAN (100GB+), sometimes 5 at a time per user, and there are a bunch of others who are reading large video files at a minimum of 220MB/sec from the SAN.
Though this worked on Snow Leopard without any issues, Lion just doesn't seem to be able to handle it. The odd thing is, on Snow Leopard there was only a single 1GB ethernet connection to a NAS system, whereas with Lion we have a much more powerful machine with a 6-port 10GB ethernet card and a 4 lane 8GB fiber card to a true SAN. You would think that the newer scenario with Lion would handle far more users with ease.
So far, very disappointing with regards to Lion's file serving performance.

  • I can't get my usb 720 to open the internet with windows 8.1 even though it says it's connected.

I just down loaded my software for the vz usb 720 modem on a new windows 8.1 computer and it says it is connected but the internet won't come on. It says firewall settings my have to be changed (921) Has anyone had this problem and is there a software upgrade for windows 8.1 that I need to use, or is it so out of date it will not work with 8.1 at all?

        Morffun,
I appreciate you reaching out. I do apologize, but that device is not compatible with Windows 8.1 software. If you wanted to explore other options for wireless broadband devices, we have plenty available. You can view them here: http://vz.to/YuBwCW.

  • Sharing Internet with AirPort

    Hello
Okay to start my iMac here is connected directly to a DSL modem with no router through Ethernet. I saw that you can share Ethernet connections and use AirPort to create a Computer-to-Computer network and enable internet connection sharing. Would this work properly with a Windows XP computer with a wireless card in? I want to be able to get that computer on the net.

Yes, but you won't be able to use a password with an XP PC therefore is not recommended.
I would recommend getting a wireless router.

  • I believe I found the fix solving home sharing issues with Windows 7

I was having a problem with my Windows 7 PC while trying to connect iTunes home sharing and my Apple TV.  While speaking to Apple support, the tech told me that home sharing uses port 3689.  I searched the web and found this link explaining how to open a port on your PC.  The issue seems to be with Windows firewall, or the anti virus software controlling the Windows firewall.  I use Norton anti virus so when I opened the Windows firewall selection in the control panel, the Norton window opened and the fix was identical to the one shown in this link.  http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/open-a-port-in-windows-7s-firewall/
Follow the instructions on the page and for step #7, enter 3689.  When you get to step #10, I typed in "Apple TV Home Sharing" so I could identify the port later on.  I made these changes, rebooted the computer, started iTunes, turned on the Apple TV and everything worked.  Try it and this should solve what seems to be a common problem.

Solved - at least all good so far.
I had to add rules to my firewall software (Symantec Endpoint Protection) for Bonjour (UDP 5353) and DAAP (TCP 3689).  Once I did that, the other librares were shown in SHARING and the Apple TV reliably connects.
What I don't understand was why it worked at all without the rules in place.
