Sharing isn't working across a network

I've run across a problem when I try to share my library across my network at home. I can see my wife's music library, but although she can see my libraray listed, when she tries to connect to it, it fails. I have checked in the sharing preferences and all the right boxes are ticked, but alas no luck.
I have also had the same problem with my iphone- it detects the library and then cannot connect either.
I am running itunes 7.6.2 on Mac os x 10.5.4 and my wife's mac is running 10.4.11
Any ideas?

Very strange! I guess I didn't realize that you were working with a mixed network, though I don't think it should matter. Is the computer whose collection you are accessing a Mac or Windows machine? How about the other computers on the network? It is possible that you may need to cross-post this on the Windows iTunes board.
Anybody out there with experience with mixed networks? (mine is Mac-only)

  • Home sharing is not working across my network since ios 6 and iTunes upgrades. Any ideas?

I have updated my IPhone 4, ipad 2, and atv2 to ios6 and my win7 pc to the latest iTunes. I have just noticed homesharing is not working on any devices. I have tried the usual disable re enable etc to no avail. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Alan.
You're not alone; it's happening to others too. There's a thread about it here.

  • TS1453 Home sharing isn't working and I can't seem to get it fixed.

When I try to go under computers on my Apple TV (2nd Gen), it says "Loading Jennifer's Library" for several minutes before I get an error telling me "Could not connect to Jennifer's Library. Make sure the computer is on the same network as your Apple tv, the itunes version is up to date, and itunes is running." I've tried literally everything short of completely reformatting my computer and I'm not doing that.
-Both my computer and apple tv are hooked up to the correct router.
-I checked the internet connection on the tv, it's in working condition.
-All my software, both on my Apple TV and on my computer are up to date.
-I have restarted itunes and my apple tv.
-I've done a reset on the apple tv.
-I've turned off homesharing on my computer and tv for 1 minute and turned it back on.
    -I've restarted my router.
    -I've restarted my modem.
-My router software is up to date.
I can play music from my computer onto my TV but as soon as I try to play my movie, which I've watched before on my apple tv and know it works, I get "An error occurred loading this content. Try again later."
I'm at a loss for what I should do next. Everything I've tried has failed. If you have any suggestions, I'd be very appreciative.

    Home sharing isn't working either
Which is why you can not use the remote app.  Did you turn on home sharing on your computer and on ATV?
eve though they have the same Apple ID.
Did you enter the ApplieID in the home sharing login though?  Or just in for the iTunes store, or iCloud, or photo sharing, or something else?
Home sharing isn't working either, I can't play or transmit any video from my iPad to the Apple TV because it doesn't recognize it
That would be AirPlay, not homesharing.  THey are not related.  Did you enable air play on all the devices?
Have you run the network test tools on ATV?  Can ATV access the iTunes store, Netflix, etc?

  • Sharing isn't working

I've looked through the help files but haven't been able to solve the problem.
I have both "Look for shared libraries" and "Share my library on my local network" checked, with "Share entire library" selected for the latter. I've entered a shared name and a required password. Status says "On, no users connected." Still, my library is not appearing to the other computer. The Firewall is not on.

  • Do encrypted Time Machine backups work across a network?

I see that Lion offers the option of encrypting TIme Machine backup volumes, which seems like a Good Thing.  After reading up a bit on this, it seems clear that it will handle the situation where the backup volume is physically attached to the machine being backed up.  However, I've gotten mixed signals about whether this will work with networked clients.  I have a server with a TM volume, and a number of machines on my network use that server and its disk for TM backups.  Can I encrypt the TM volume in this situation, and will Time Machine be able to back up from those clients to the server?  I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't work, but, like I said, the overall story isn't completely clear.  Thanks for any advice!

There's nothing in the Help or other documentation I can find.
Just that OSX can't do it from the Mac that's doing the backup.
There was a similar post the other day; I asked the poster to let us know whether it worked, but haven't gotten an answer yet.  So if you try it, please post back with your results.
I do agree with coocoo, though -- if you want to do this, keep "secondary" backups, not encrypted, just in case.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.

  • Home sharing isn't working...

I just signed onto itunes on a new computer. I opened home share and don't see all of my music. I have some, but no way to get to what is on my vintage computer that I'm giving up on. Could it be because the old computer is too old? Help.

    It should work.
Ctrl S to get the sidebar back in the new itunesThen they look similar
Ctrl B to show top menu
In itunes 11 to turn on Home Sharing
File > Home Sharing > Create Home Share
Enter the apple id and password
in iTunes 10 Advanced > Create Home Share
Enter the same apple id as above. It does not matter what Apple ID they are lofgged into itunes store with
On each machine you should now see a house shaped icon showing the other machines library under Shared in the left hand sidebar.
If the 2 machines use different Apple ID to purchase from itunes you need to authorise each machine with the other account. If it is the same ignore this
Then you should be able to select the library from the other machine and import.
I have just checked this on a machine with iTunes 11 on it and another one with iTunes 10.7

  • HT4527 My Home Sharing isn't working.

Both of my computers are authorized and online, but the Home Sharing tab still doesn't show up. How can I fix this?

Here's what finally worked for me: make sure home sharing is setup on the Apple TV.  Leave the Apple TV on, and at the home screen with the selection box on Computers.  On the Mac open iTunes, click File > Home Sharing > Turn Off Home Sharing.  QUIT ITUNES (this is the step I missed the first time).  Open iTunes again, click File > Home Sharing > Turn On Home Sharing.  Sign in with the same Apple ID and password.

  • File sharing is sharing ALL my files across my network

I have a regular router/modem provided by my ISP.
I have an iMac connected to the router via ethernet.
I also have a Macbook connected to the gateway via wireless.
When I turn File Sharing ON on my iMac, it doesn't just share my "Public Folder" like I tell it to, it shares everything!!!... my entire hard disk and external drives attached.
Can anyone tell me why this might be happening? All I'd like is to have a folder that myself and the Macbook user ca use to share files on. Not the entire iMac.
    Any help appreciated

Here is what you will need to do.
1st. Know the short name of each user on the computer you want to share with.
for example I have my daughter as a managed account Full Name: My Daughter Short Name: mydaug
Now what you have to do is go to your other computer which is showing your entire hard drive on and open up *System Preferences* go to Accounts and click on the + symbol and create a new user account under *Sharing Only* then give the Full Name under Name & the *Short Name* under Short Name as it appears on your other MAC. give them a password to use.
Keep in mind that the user accounts on the other MAC's should not have Admin rights they should be standard or managed users only for this to work cause you don't want them to able to change or delete keychains at all.
Now go to your sharing folder under *File Sharing* select the folder you want to share and then add the user to it's group. Now you should be able to add the users you just created for a certain folder or hard drive for that matter.
2nd. Now we need to go back to the other MAC and connect via the shared drives, if your automatically connected make sure you disconnect as the user & reconnect as the user you created. Which in my case would be my daughters short name & password, and click to save password to keychain. then connect.
Now even if you disconnect and connect again it will automatically connect as that same user rather then the admin as it was doing before.

  • File share, video chat, or screen sharing isn't working.

This past month I have realized that file sharing or video chat is not working. Every time I try to use file share it says that it is "calculating time" then after a few minutes says no response from my buddy. But for some reason I am able to send files, I just cannot receive them. Neither has video chat, or screen sharing been working lately, too.

    Hi Max,
Like Matt Clifton who answered you in the other thread I do not use email for anything I would want to be secure.
I do have certificates from a couple of people who have used vetting sites about who is sending them email (even though they emailed me first).
The Mail Forum is Leopard may have something on newer developments in security related issues with Mail. Whether they can be transposed to and Earlier OS I would not know as Mail is not really my area.
As several Governments has expressed the idea that they want this sort of Access to prevent terrorism I am not sure if any form of internet contact is going to be that secure.
Having said that iChat has problems if DoS or SPI filters are in place but seem more influenced by the amount of data sent to you which DoS interprets as an Attack on the threshold basis and SPI just does not seem able to cope with high volume streams, effectively making that Threshold based in it's resultant action.
On the flip side iChat is Peer-to-Peer in Direct Chats (Where Files and Pics in chats are sent) and in Audio Only and Video chats.
In Leopard (iChat 4) the Video Window can be used as th control point to Send as either iChat Theatre or File Sending.
I have no idea what is out there for Mail or alternative apps.

  • How do I transfer my itunes to a new computer if my home sharing isn't working?

I just bought a new Windows 8 computer but my iTunes isn't transfering to my new computer. I made a home sharing account on my old computer and logged into it on my new computer, but it just says searching for music then won't open anything. How do I get my music over to my new iTunes?
    Thanks!
    Jamie

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

An Added Bonus is that you will have a Backup of iTunes

  • Family Sharing isn't working on my daughter's ipod touch

I setup a Family Sharing account using my apple account as the Organizer.  I invited my daughter to join.  Her iPod touch was still on iOS 7 with 16 GB free (out of 32 GB), so she updated to iOS 8.1.1 after she updated she accepted the Family Sharing invitation and was able to download one song (that was purchased from my account a long time ago).  She tried to download other songs, but kept getting the message
"Unable to Download Song" "song title" could not be downloaded at this time. [Done] [Retry]
The song shows up in her list as though it was downloaded (she doesn't have a cloud with a down arrow) the song says that it's 3:53, but won't play (it basically is grayed out).
Now my daughter is not so happy that she updated to iOS 8, she looked on her iPod and saw that she went from having 16 GB free to only having 2.7 GB free.
Does anyone have any clues on how to fix this?

Sounds like the download may be due to an Apple problem.
    For the storage space:
Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB indicates corrupted files.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It?
Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
To restore to factory settings/new iPod see:

  • Iphoto Sharing Isn't Working

Really frustrated. It was working a couple of minutes, I've been sending photos to some friends through imessage, and I waited until all my other pictures were sent, but whenever I go to click on it, it just makes a noise. Thanks!

What exactly does "the photos wouldn't work" actually mean?
I'm not sure what the problem with this is:
After installing iPhoto 11, this message comes up when opened: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto."
I don't have an external disk to use time capsle
There are many, many ways to back up apart from Time Machine. Wha is certain is that without a back up you will lose data at some point.
I've tried rebuilding the database through iPhoto manager
Did this give you any error messages?

  • Is the iPad Wi-fi   Cellular unlocked to work across cellular networks in the world?

I am planning to buy an ipad Air (wi-fi + cellular). I would like to know if the cellular access is locked to any particular carrier. Will I be able to use it with other cellular networks outside of the US?

Yes, but only if you purchase the AT&T version of the iPad 2. The AT&T version is unlocked (confirmed by Apple), but more importantly, utilizes a micro-sim card which can be swapped with a micro-sim card from any other worldwide carrier outside of the U.S.

  • Lightroom across the network, is there ANY way?

We have to process large catalogs with 8000 plus images and are under a time limit of about a week tp process them ...usually.
We put the catalog on one PC we call the Master and would like to be able to have other staff work on the catalog from one of the other PC's on the network. We have 12 PC's on a peer to peer network ( no server) and I need to split up the load and have several people working on it at once. I need to be able to open a catalog from another PC, while several other people are doing the same thing on different parts of the catalog so I can get these jobs out the door without one person or PC managing the whole job.
We don't put it on an external hard drive and move from one PC to another, that still defeats the purpose.
So far LR says it cannot work across a network, so I can't open a catalog from a laptop and work on the project from home ( for example) and I don;'t want to be duplicating all 8000 images on all the PC's so we are at a point where I need to ask for help...
Right now I export part of the master catalog to anoter PC with the oiginal images copied to the second PC, make my edits and Export back to the Master PC in a subfolder by the dancers name. Slow, but it does work. I would rather not have to do that on multiple machines to speed up the project.
Isn't there some way I can open the master catalog form another PC on the network, make the corrections and do the export right there?
Thanks everyone - any help is appreciated!

    No.
There are risky workarounds that allow you to open a catalog that's on the network, but none that allow multiple users to access the same catalog.  Any such workaround is a sure-fire way to corrupt the whole thing.
